FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/DefiniteAquascapeTV YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/user/DefiniteAquascapeTV PAGE: http://definiteaquascape.tv Best planted aquariums arranged for the aquascaping contest "The Art of the Planted Aquarium". Dimensions of aquariums are 100x50x50 cm, there are Eheim external filters and T5 fluorescent lamps used. No LED lighting used, becasue back then this type of aquarium illumination was not so popular as it is today. Neither CO2 supply systems nor aquarium plants fertilizers are used during the exhibition. There are aslo no fish in the aquariums, because they are forbidden by the rules of the contest. First, they could cause additional troubles, second, they would distract the viewers from admiring the aquascapes.

Inspiring aquascaping, indeed however CO2 and fertz might not be there at the moment of the exhibition but likely they where there until the last moment. Otherwise you can not get these kind of vibrant plants with bubbles on. So i have to admit, statement of "no CO2, no fertz " is misleading here. None of them gonna be effective at the time of exhibition, but obviously they have been effective for a while just not now.

Amazing Tank Thanks!  I've also been working on planted tanks for a while now.  The biggest investment I made was for good quality LED lighting. This significantly increased the plants growth.   The aquarium built LED lamps run well over $150 and close to $200, I was able to use my Lumiy Lightline 1250 (super bright LED desk lamp) to do the same job.  For some reason the Lightline 1250 in white is really good price.   Affordable, bright, not bad on price either.  Worth checking it out if you also have plants in your tank.

I believe these tanks were thrown together at the last moment for showing, so the plants aren't growing. But if you do want to grow plants you need a nutrinet rich substrate and good lighting.

Although these are only planted tanks (no fish), I've kept MANY different types of aquariums over the years.  My favorite was a planted tank, no external filtration nor aeration.  Only plants and fish.  The plants went absolutely crazy, growing and multiplying and the fish were totally healthy.  It was so fun to see how the system worked.
Sherry Walker
Sherry Walker - 9 years ago
+srikanth soma I actually used aquatic soil (bought from a plant nursery) and covered it with aquarium gravel.  I never had any issues with the health of the fish, and as I said, the plants just went crazy!  I don't think I even had any aeration in it, and definitely no filtration.  Oh, and the fish multiplied also.

akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 9 years ago
+srikanth soma
Of course it is safe. I have several tanks without any filtration at all, just substrate (very fine quartz sand), lots of Java moss, and some aeration to make the water circulate, and it works perfectly.

Sherry, I myself want to start one planted tank albeit without any filtration. Is that safe for plants and fish??

Air bubbles are NOT good for your C.O.2!
They take your c.o.2 out of the tank and makes your water hard. so plants won't grow well. Don't use it.(so my english is not very good)

I just bought some from www(dot)aquariumplantsandsupplies(dot)com/. You can also probably find plants at a local fish store, but I only have one near me and the plants ALWAYS have snails and they're sometimes half brown :/  There are lots of sites where can get plants. I just bought a java fern, an amazon sword, an anubias nana barteri, cryptocoryne wendtii, christmas moss, and a red tiger lotus from the site I listed above for $30. There's free shipping for the rest of the month. Takes 2 weeks to get to you though :/

I just spent about $30 at www(dot)aquariumplantsandsupplies(dot)com/
I bought an amazon sword (although it's not the most common kind, it's still really nice looking), a java fern, christmas moss, anubias nana barteri, crypto(something) wendtii and a red tiger lotus. I think most of the plants come as bulbs or the leaves are removed so they stay healthy when you put them in the tank, so you have to do some green thumbing :P but I did get all the stuff I listed for $30 and there's a free shipping promotion going on this month and considering these plants are getting sent from CHINA, I was pretty surprised that they would ever offer free shipping. I also ordered water roses on amazon. they ship in sets of 3, so for three of them I think it was $5ish but there's also $4ish in shipping. Anyway, I'm a student too but I think I got a pretty good deal for starter plants :) This will be my first planted tank and I'm hoping to get the Christmas moss to grow as a carpet plant. I really liked the picture in the video of the tank with that tall grass as a background. That was awesome! I might have to try that! My tank will be low tech though so I won't be using CO2. I think aquascaping really only gets super expensive when you go high tech! Of course all the tanks in the video would be high tech, but I have aquascaping plans that I've been told will work just fine and my tank should look pretty good too even as a low tech tank!

The link doesn't show up, because I don't have a plants list for this tank :) Anyways, 7:22 is mixture of Hemianthus callitrichoides and Glossostigma elatinoides, and 7:32 is Marsilea quadrifolia (the larger in the center and slightly on the left side). I don't know what is the name of the "spotted" stemmed plant, which is also visible on the screen at this time...

It's just a lot of Hemianthus callitrichoides :) Click the yellow link which appears on top of the screen (the one which says "Click for PLANTS LIST"), you will jump to another video, where all plants are marked with letters. Follow the link in the description of this second video, and you'll jump to my website, where all plant names are provided.

yea its all on amazon! search eco-complete, it is simply the best substrate out there for freshwater plants. Its like $20 for a 20 pound bag, you would only use 10 for a 10 gallon really maybe abit more, but thats the only size so you'll have extra.

Kelvin R

yes of course, as long as you have proper light intensity for various kinds of plant you can create a nice natural looking environment. For a 10 gal I would suggest the the 18" finnex ray2 with a glass canopy to sit atop youll be able to grow anything with that and your fish will look amazing, add some driftwood and/or rocks and you have a 10 gal aquascape.

This particular plant - yes. It's Riccia fluitans, it's a floating plant, so it must be attached to flat stones somehow, if one wants to have it growing on the bottom. So people either use mesh, or fishing string wrapped around the stone, to keep Ricca in place.

If you put many plants in your tank and good light on it, the algue don't have any chance to grow 'cause the plants will eat all nutrients before the algue can do. If you have already many algue you may should restart you tank with more fast growing plants. DON'T use "anti-algue products"' 'cause you do NOT need it if your plants are growing well.

The only way to get rid of this staining is just to keep the trunk in the aquarium for years :) It must be soaked in water, and only then it will slowly release all the substances which are colouring the water. No washing will help it. You can also try to boil the trunk (if it's small enough to fit into a pot), but it will not remove the staining. It's just how it is with the wood :) (but, it's important from what kind of tree is this trunk, and if it was dry at the beginning, or not? :) )

Hey mate, I don't "sub back" :) Subbing is not like "doing a favour" - you sub when you're interesting in somebody's stuff, that's all. I never ask people for subbing to my channel, and I don't expect someone will do it for me as a favour. Make videos which are interesting for the viewers, and you'd easily get new subs, without asking people to do so :)

yes they do. if you wanted to do a gold fish tank with any plants. establish the plants in the tank first. And what i mean by establish is give it at least 6 mos if not closer to a year before adding any fish like gold fish. you plants that grow relatively fast and combine some hardier plants that are not so easily damaged. I had some set up in my 60 gallon tank but because i did not establish the plants first they were devoured in 4 months. except the bamboo that lasted like 8 months.

You'll probably have issues with goldfish eating your scape
akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 11 years ago
First of all, there wouldn't be any "poo-control" needed when the tank would be large enough. Goldfish need at least 40-60 liters per one fish, so keeping 4-5 fish in 240 liters aquarium solves any poo-related problems. I'm not sure about if goldfish eat plants or not, but I think one could set up a very nice planted aquarium only with hardy plants like Echinodorus and Cryptocorynes, and all should be fine.
Dameon Grey
Dameon Grey - 11 years ago
Is it possible to do aquascaping with a goldfish tank. That might sound like a stupid idea. I'm just thinking of the gravel vac I do for poo-control. I wouldn't really be able to do that, I think.

The inhabitants were a school of corydoras (10 of em) and a few mosquitofish. I went on vacation for 3 weeks, then my water went out when I got back, so I took a hard loss in the tank. Mostly have to start over. :( The crypts are taller now, though. Like I said, it was a one-two punch of algae and the crypts being newly planted.
akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 11 years ago
I'd just keep making water changes, and wait for several weeks. Besides, do you measure any water parameters in your tank? pH? Hardness? How high is NO3? What fish, and how many, are in this aquarium? And what is the volume of the tank itself?

Which tank is lovely? Did you watch the video, at all? Or do you just paste the same text "Lovely tank! Small fish are doing great in large tanks, and you can keep a lot of them. A large shoal of neon tetras is amazing. But I would strongly suggest to begin your adventure in planted aquariums with a small-scale tank - it's far easier to maintain and correct if any problems arise. Example - what would you do if your 1000g+ tank needs 50% of water change, because of overdosing some ferts? (can happen easily for an unexperienced hobbyist). Start small, get experience, then go for the big thing! :)

Thanks, when i lived in korea someone gave me a 50 gallon aquarium and i put soil and plants in it, but it was nothing like this. I had some grass, and a lot of bamboo. Someday I want to build a HUGE "1000g+" plywood tank. Would it be too much effort to maintain a beautiful garden on that scale? I like small fish like neon tetras, even in a big tank if that makes a difference. Not a big fish kind of guy,
akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 11 years ago
Well, there is no simple answer to that :) Some people prefer to stick to one track, others are easily bored. I think the soundtrack in one video should be consistent - so, if it's not the same melody repeated, it should be tracks sounding similar. Now, go ahead and try to find music which is similar to the track I used, and cheap enough to buy commercial rights to be able to use it in the video :)
akwabiotop

Turtles and planted taks don't go well together... ;)
akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 11 years ago
Well, first it requires knowledge and experience, and getting these takes time. Most aquascapers I know are in the hobby for at least two years, often twice as much. They learned a lot on the way. So it's a lot of effort to get to a point where you are able to set up and maintain tank like these in the video. But the maintaining itself it's not really effort-demanding - water changes and some cleaning (1x-2x a week), trimming plants (1x a week), fertilizing, and that's it, most of the time.

akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 11 years ago
If the sand is really fine (small grains, I mean), then don't take too much. When there is to much of such fine grained substrate, then there will be oxygen-less zones forming inside, where hydrogen sulfide will be produced. Thin layer of sand, like 0,5-1cm should be OK, but if you take more you should read something about oxygen-less zones and how to deal with them :)
akwabiotop

the lakes here have really good sand, the kind you see on the beach, its beautiful, ill have to try that to see if its safe, thanks for the comment :)!
akwabiotop
akwabiotop - 11 years ago
Naaah, should be OK. But you MUST boil the sand first, say, at least for an hour, or even longer, if you want to be on a safe side. Besides, you need also to check if the sand will not raise the hardness of your aquarium water - pour vinegar over it, and see if it starts "bubbling". If yes, then the sand contains limestone, and is not suitable for aquarium (unless it's Tangayika, Malawi or Victoria setup). Anyway, why do you want to put sand from your lakes into your tank?

i live in michigan, and i've been wanting to put sand from the local lakes in my tank, just wondering if that would kill them?

Lol, I think it was just a one-two punch of algae and the crypts being new. I know replanting is the biggest killer of crypts, and on top of that, I had dead algae particles that made it look browner. While I could probably trim a few leaves, when the algae isn't on top, it's alive. Currently reducing food and lighting to kill off the algae (especially a ton of hair algae) so the crypts should end up fine. The newer leaves are a nice green with thick veins, so it's all good. Sand + T5 lights.

Fish are forbidden by the rules of the contest. However, I spoke to the organizers, maybe the next year they'll allow stocking aquariums with fish. BTW - do you know that I have heaps and heaps of other planted aquariums, with fish, on my other channel "DefiniteAquascapeTV"?
