It is though, when I click vote, i get a screen pop up (a safe one, so it's not an add or something weird) and it wants me to log in with facebook. If I don't do that and click the X, the vote page says "an error has occured while processing facebook vote"

Meagan Hartman Siamese fighting fish, and you are correct, the splendens variety should NOT be housed together, especially male and female (unless you're trying to breed, and even then, it is a VERY tricky and time consuming process).

Hello emzotic. I encourage you to research about your catfish. He needs to live in a group. Also, the neon tetras seemed to be in a very small aquarium. They need to be in a group of 10 and need lots of space Love you between

Females are just as likely to go after each other as males, regardless of how big or how heavily planted the tank is. It is only a matter of time until something goes wrong.

Ive read where you said you had experience breeding betta in the past... At the end of the day, a tank set up/betta spotlight video is not the time or place to promote male and female housing. I wouldnt even suggest a sorrority tank lightly. That requires more advanced betta & aquarium care research. Your viewers may see you do it and assume it was okay and house their betta together without a 2nd thought. This tank is unsuitable for fry anyways.
Joshua Fuhrman
Joshua Fuhrman - 6 years ago
Meagan Hartman you can actually keep female bettas togrther in a betta sorority tank as long as it is big enough
Laranda Lee
Laranda Lee - 6 years ago
Emzotic you may have gotten lucky in the past that the male didn't kill or overly stress the female, but animal care should not be based on luck. It's only a matter of time before that male or female kill each other. Ask any breeder. It is impossible for you to monitor them 24/7. That male can decide at a drop of the hat that he doesn't want her in his territory anymore and kill her. Further, it's irresponsible for you to perpetuate this pair-housing myth just because you've had luck with it in the past. If you did your research, you would understand why not housing them together is considered such a hard and fast rule.

Sabrina Lorraine Correct and correct. I’d rather not crowd my tank with Ottos. That one Otto does brilliantly alone and there wouldn’t be enough food or space for 6. I may consider adding two more, but only if I’m confident that they would have sufficient food x

Meagan Hartman Yes they absolutely can and caution should always be taken when pairing Bettas. I’ve kept males and females together with success and in the past, and I’ve also seen females pestered. I keep an eye on them but there isn’t a any cause for concern with these too right now x

I have a 5 gallon tank and it is a fluval - I love it! Does anyone have any recommendations of heaters? I've used a couple of different ones and have not fallen in love with any. Also, I know Betta's love a lot of foliage and I was wanting a floating plant for the tank - any suggestions?
Jamie Wang
Jamie Wang - 6 years ago
Yeah I don't really recommend housing two bettas in a tank like that. For everyone wanting to replicate this, don't do it. Housing males and females together is risky since the male will often come for the female. Love you Em, but I thought you'd have better advice for beginners :)

I got a betta last week. I was so focused on keeping the water parameters perfect for him and I did so much research. Unfortunately the instructions on the pellets pack I was giving him recommended giving him 2 pellets a day and, as he was full grown, I figured this would be a safe amount to give him. I was very wrong and he ended up dying overnight after suffering from swimbladder disorder (which I tried my best to treat) for 24 hours :( getting into fish keeping is not easy at all.... r.i.p fishy

This hobby is very important to me, but this video has annoyed me. When Danny was talking about cycling the aquarium you did not use precycled biomedia therefore two days is not going to cycle your aquarium! I love your channel Em but consider this carefully! Forgive me if I misunderstood and you just didn’t mention the fact that you used cycled media but it is confusing when this video is about given fish what they actually need and it looks like you’re not doing some of it. Love you x

Hi Em,

As a betta lover and specialist I urge you to please separate the fish. You will not have fun with them for a long time when you keep them together.
The bred forms of Betta splendens - unlike the wild forms - are not suitable for pair or harem keeping. They will -at some point - stress each other out or even nibble, fight or kill each other. I could send you plenty of material to prove that even pairs that seem fine in one moment, become killer machines in the next. The best thing you can do is keep them alone in their own private tank.
Also, the flow is way to high for them. They're having trouble swimming.

I love your videos and not to sound rude while your video seeks to educate it is suplying a lot of false information. Bettas should not be kept together unless breeding is whats is intended as well as otos are schooling fish that need more than one in a tank. I think this video could have benifited with proper consideration about information as not to mislead people into believing that they can just throw two bettas in together and expect a happy tank. The female should have had more time to heal before the thought of breeding had even occured as well as perhaps talking more about proper cycling as most people dont know about it or how to do it, which at times can take up to a few months to do. Perhaps make an update video adressing these issues?

Hello Em,
Not sure if this will get to you, but it's open for discussion for anyone who wants to chime in. I acquired a baby common snapping turtle who has been living with me for the past few months. I would like to keep her as she grows, so I've been attempting to get her used to my hands and face etc so she doesn't grow to be too snappy. She, however, hates it every time I take her out of her tank and doesn't seem to be calming down much over time. Any advice?

I keep a male betta in a 10 gallon planted tank with established filtration, temps between 74 to 78 degrees. community tank mates with shrimps and snails some algae eater.. not another betta. Any one new to the fish hobby here for information should know that they shouldn't be housed together, the extra stress to the fish is unnecessary. Be smart.

They’re so pretty! Personally, I’ve never been able to successfully keep more than one Betta fish in a tank without fighting with the other tank mates, however it was a much smaller territory than yours. My current Betta Lewis LOVES to swim through caves! There’s one for him at the aquarium surface, and an unintentional one under a decoration I have. He’s swimming through one of them pretty much every time I look at the tank. Sometimes I take a piece of his food and hold it at the other end for him to find. So much fun! I would definitely recommend incorporating one in your tank for them somehow.

YAYAYAY! SOME ONE DID THEIR RESEARCH! PEOPLE HARDLY EVER DO THEIR RESEARCH!!! YOU MAKE ME SO HAPPY YOU MADE MY DAY! I have a betta in a moderately planted 10 gal! He use to be kept in less than a quart of water. He was pale, see through, and thin. I put him in the 10 gal. In 5 minutes of swimming around he was flaring and covered in beautiful colors that I didnt know he possessed. He gained weight and developed a nice, friendly attitude. People: DO RESEARCH AND GIVE PROPER CARE TO YOUR FISH.

May I suggest checking out Creative Pet Keepings channel. She has a whole series on breeding bettas . I also have a betta breeding series on my channel that may help with appropriate breeding tank set ups etc. It concerns me those fish have been in that tank for over a month, the flow is too strong and other fish are in the tank. The set up is not at all appropriate for breeding bettas. I look forward to seeing your future breeding video and they way you do things. It’s always interesting seeing how others do things.

Lifewithpets I absolutely agree with all of what you've said here Sheila. What concerns me is the dangerous message many younger viewers appear to have gotten as I have now been getting emails today being told that I know nothing as a few of my videos stress the natural aggression of betta splendens and Emzotic is now keeping a pair together and "so see it's fine." This is distressing to me as to how it may affect the betta keeping community as Em has such a huge following.

I have three Betta fish now and I have had two in the past. I keep a male solitary and I keep females in my tropical freshwater community aquarium. The male I have now, Ares, is very quirky. He will only eat 9 of the Betta pellets (if I accidentally give him 10, he will leave one uneaten, and if I accidentally give him 8, he will show off and beg for another). I’ve only had one Betta out of five (Ares) who disliked bloodworms, which are a great food for fish such as Betta fish, so I’d suggest (to everybody with a Betta) giving bloodworms to them as a special treat.

This really isn't the proper setup for breeding bettas. Please do a bit more research! This video was very informative, just like all your other videos, but it should have been specified that they should not be together unless you're breeding. I breed bettas and this setup likely won't give you that many, if any, living fry in the end.

I was excited for the tank until I saw you had a female and a male together in a tank. There have been studies showing that invisible stress hormones are present in tanks with a male and female fish, including breeding hormones that stress out the female to breed. Being a channel to teach people about animals, showing people that you can just put a male and female together and have no problems is pretty disappointing, especially with no warnings. Yes, bettas should be in at least 5g and no smaller but betta splendids should not be house with other betta splendids. Males shouldn't be with males, females shouldn't be with females, and males shouldn't be with females. Otherwise, the tank looked nice. However Otto's are known to shaol and do like to have friends so I would recommend adding at least one more Otto.

You should consider rehoming that Otocinclus. They're a shoaling species and really ought to be kept in the company of 6 or more conspecifics to keep from getting stressed.

Also, glad to hear you'll be separating the betta after mating. I was worried til i read some of your comments.

They lived in a ten gallon I had on my desk. Some live plants and caves.

Hey Em! I’m interested in keeping some betta fish but most information I find I feel is incorrect (like for example they can live in a tiny cup) so I have a few questions, how big of a tank do you think they really need? How warm does their water need to be? I see mixed opinions on this. Last thing, what do you feed a betta on regular basis? Is the flake food from a pet store okay? Or do they need the live blood worms to be healthy? Sorry to bother you, thank you in advance!

Takes tank WAAAY more time to cycle than 2 days, even in a fish in cycle (which really aren’t recommended because it’s not good for the fish). Even with old wood and filter media, you should’ve given it more than 2 days

Such a basic rule known even by (most of) those who irresponsibly buy a pretty wittle betta fish and put the poor thing in a small little cube/bowl to rot, and yet, still broken. Betta are not fish who can be put together in a tank in the hopes of them eventually breeding. Particular conditions are not required, and yet...

This has nothing to do with the bettas you have, I was just wondering if you have any calcium in your tank for your mystery snail? I have a few and while I was researching the up keep on them I noticed that having calcium is really good for their shells. I actually have a piece of cuttel bone that you use for birds in both the tanks that my snails live in. I would enjoy dosing my tank with calcium more, but I haven't seen anything for me to do that recently.

Please please PLEASE tell me you're kidding right? I trust you a lot Em, i love your content and adore your animals and the education you spread. But this is... not good at all. Betta fish should never be housed together, doesn't matter their gender or personality or whatever. Males and females should only be housed together for breeding in very specific conditions. We want our fish to THRIVE and not just survive, and when housing Bettas together they are barely surviving. it doesn't matter how much success you've had in the past, or the individual personality's of the fish.

Please Em, please reconsider keeping them together, if you wanted to breed them this is NOT the way to do it, not to mention i don't even recommend breeding them. :(

Em, you Educate people, people trust you and the information you give out, please admit that this was a wrong decision on your part, i think both fish would be MUCH MORE happy housed separate. Not to mention, If you were intending to breed them you'd need to house them separate ANYWAY when the eggs are dropped. :\

Love you Em, but this was the one video i am not okay with.
IceTalonTheOne
IceTalonTheOne - 6 years ago
If you planned to Breed them, do you have separate set ups for both of them? And are you planning on Using Indian Almond leaves in that tank, (for the health of both of them and to encourage safe breeding).

When is that Video coming out may i ask? I'm sorry but i don't quite trust what you say there and i would really like to know more on what you are thinking and the decisions you are making. i'm really worried about your fish, as well as the Young audience you influence.

I'm assuming you've done a BUNCH of research on Breeding Bettas, have you seen Creative Pet Keeping and her Betta Breeding series, it is highly informative and shows both the struggles and how to deal with them as they come up. If anything i'd recommend looking up her channel for Breeding information!

This is an educational video so please mention this: You should NEVER ever put male and female betta together it’s a horrible idea! He may not bother her now but I assure you he will kill her one day. Please please never mix male and female betta. If you want to have multiple betta you can do a sorority tank. 20 gallons or more and at least 5 females so the aggression is dispersed. You should also have the tank very densely planted to allow for places for the betta to escape one another. My guess why there is success in this particular setup (for now) is that there is lots of plants to allow for hiding spots but this will not last for long. Again please never mix male and female betta. It’s a bad idea and 99% of the time it does NOT WORK. Yes there are exceptions like here but that does not mean it will work

There’s a YouTuber named
Paul Cuffaro who thinks that bettas can live in this little “aquarium falls” that’s less than 2.5 gallons with no heater. People tried to explain to him just because the package says it perfectly fine doesn’t mean it’s perfectly fine. I don’t think he will listen to comments but if you maybe comment he might listen because you are AE. I just feel so bad for the bettas in the “falls” and it’s upsetting that 1 out of four of his bettas has proper housing.

Hi Em! I've been a huge fan of your channel! As a betta lover and keeper myself, I have to say I really appreciate you discussing bettas being in a larger, heated, and filtered tank. And addressing the flow issues Fluvals can have for some kinds of bettas with large finnage. However, you really shouldn't house males and females together all the time unless you're breeding them. They are pretty violent towards each other (especially when the male is courting the female) and without proper supervision or time for the female to rest, it can be extremely detrimental to her health. Also you should keep otocinclus in groups, as they are more comfortable with others like them around.

I have read the other comments, so I know you have them together for breeding, but this really isn't the correct way to breed bettas. They need shallow water, so that the dad doesn't get tired catching all the eggs and putting them in the nest. He is also liable to loose them as there so many plants and Rock, and that will result in bad, maybe fungus eggs. You should also keep them separate for awhile to condition them, and make sure they are aggressive enough. It's unlikely these two will breed because they are so chill with each other. You need the aggression with betta splendens. This would work for wilds but not really a good setup with spledens. All this being said, I think your setup is beautiful, but that you should just consider the breeding practices a bit more. Hope you do not take offense to this! ❤️

Hi Em!
If you are looking into breeding your betta fish you should look into Indian Almond Leaf, usually, people put it in the aquariums so the male can build up the bubble nest under it. Btw you will know you might have a "good" couple if your male starts "building" bubble nests on the surface. And after the breeding process, you need to remove the female from the tank (i don't exactly remember), but there are many videos on YT talking about that! :D

One thing you can add to the aquarium too is moss balls, betta fish usually like them.

Pay attention if you're going to let the plants grow because if their leaves are "hard" it can damage your betta's fins, that is why you rarely see people use fake plants in betta fish setups.

I have a betta named Dwalin who looks a lot like your Spidey. He shares a 29 gallon with black neon tetras, rummynose tetras and sterbai cories. Fishkeeping definitely has a learning curve, and nine years into it I'm still learning, but the most important thing is to understand the nitrogen cycle and how everything relates to it. Regarding bettas, they can be very rewarding and personable when cared for properly, but there is still so much bad or inaccurate information out there about them. Thank you for showing people what a thriving betta tank looks like!
Little Red
Little Red - 6 years ago
I’d also not keep that type of cat fish in there either considering they grow big and a 9 gallon really isn’t suitable for any type of fish let alone more than one. Both snails and catfish are high ammonia producers, the tank will more than likely crash eventually. A single Betta needs 10 gallons to himself. Also, taking water from an established tank does nothing. The good bacteria lives in the filter, sponges, substrate and some live on plants. The old tank water literally holds no good bacteria but it can help to accumulate a fish taking him from one tank to another. Bettas should’ve be used to do fish in cycles, they’re NOT hardly fish, despite what people think. The best fish in cycle fish are minnows (white clouds being a favourite of mine for cycling). I’ve been keeping fish for over a decade and though this tank looks lovely, it’ll more than likely fail. Hopefully it won’t but, it’s probable.

Hey! I don’t like to hate, and this isn’t to attack you, but the tank you gave them is not ideal for breeding. It should be bare bottom, and have no flow at all to make sure the eggs don’t go flying around. I’ve had a few years of experience of breeding. Even if they look happy, you’re stressing out the female greatly by keeping them together for so long (:

Betta fish are fascinating if you give them a lot of space because in the wild they're river-based fish and each one has his own territory (hence why they fight if you keep two males together). I had one in a 20 gal alone, and he would patrol his space constantly. Plus, if you give them space, it gives them a chance to really swim fast, and with their long flowing fins, it's lovely. Also, my saltwater eel is still alive but won't eat on his own yet. I really hope he pulls through.

While I appreciate you raising awareness of the space betta should live in, I had to dislike this video. Male and female betta splendens should never be permanently housed together. There are other types of betta, like the wild types, that can be housed together, but even those can be risky. If you check out the Fluval YouTube channel ( https://youtu.be/NibQ-ZoUWkA ), you can learn more about the different types.
That being said, the different types of hormones the males and females release into the water can stress them out. They may look okay and appear to get along, but the stress could be killing them.
I personally have 11 betta fish, 4 of which are female. Even though my research has shown that females can be kept together (in no less than 20 gallons and in odd numbers) I still feel that even that is asking for trouble. Please, for the health of your fish, separate the male and female betta.

Beautiful fish! Bettas are my favorite fish to keep. I just got a handful of females the other day for my 20 gallon, and they're doing great. Thank you for spreading information about proper care. I hope that someday those tiny jars that they market as "betta tanks" will disappear from the shelves the more people learn about bettas and decide to keep them in proper tanks.

A couple additional notes for new betta owners watching:
1. Always keep a lid on your betta tanks, they're great jumpers.
2. Always ensure that there is air access, bettas are a type of gourami which are labyrinth fish, so they need to breathe air from the surface. As a result, longer shallow tanks are better for bettas than tall tanks.
3. Avoid plastic plants, which can tear their fins. Opt for live or silk - live is best ;)
4. They're obligate carnivores, so don't use tropical flakes, and definitely don't put them in those vases marketed as self-sustaining "because the betta will eat the plant roots." You can feed freeze dried bloodworms and brine shrimp (I also feed mine live fruit flies.)
5. Keep sponges on your filter intakes if possible to prevent their fins from getting sucked into the filtration.
MiscellaneousRosie
MiscellaneousRosie - 6 years ago
Eeek so close! So close to being perfect haha. The most pressing issue with this setup is the fact that those two fish are being housed together, not a good idea at all. If they are together for breeding - fine, but as soon as they do take the female out otherwise things will get messy very quickly. And if they don't breed within 2 weeks I'd say, take her out. If they haven't by that time they likely won't and all it will do will stress them both out and lead to some major health issues. Secondly, that is not how a tank is cycled. The water column holds little to none of the beneficial bacteria needed to break down the ammonia and nirtites - to do this properly you should have added filter media from your established tank. Right now you are doing a fish-in cycle because of the lack of bacteria. Because of this your bettas will likely experience high stress, difficulty breathing and possibly ammonia burns, leading to fin rot and possible death. Fish-in cycles are cruel and should never really be done, ever. I understand you guys thought you were doing a fishless cycle by adding the water from the old tank but this isn't the case I'm afraid.

Aside from that this tank is lovely, and will make a perfect home for one of these guys once the other has been removed :)

rarely can a female and male be housed together- you mught have gotten lucky, but as you are trying to educate people it is definitely worth mentioning so as not to create more misinformation with bettas. usually a solidary male in a nano, a male with the right fish/ setup a community, or a sorority of many females in a heavily planted 30+ gallon are the general rules.

Megan Bastian

I breed bettas and this 100% is NOT a proper setup for breeding them at all. You will not get a single live baby with this setup. The filtration is wrong, theres other fish that shouldn't really be in there, there's substrate which will make it harder for the male to find fallen fry, and the water level is way too high. The aquarium should only be 25% full so the male doesn't have to overwork himself picking up fry. I love the setup, its gorgeous, but its not correct for breeding.
Laranda Lee
Laranda Lee - 6 years ago
hahayourfunny94 I don't, that's why I asked. Also this isn't a breeding setup. I try to be open minded to alternative methods of breeding but this is way wrong. And if she's not making a video on breeding bettas then they shouldn't be housed together in this one.

How can you say they are only for breeding when this isn't even a proper breeding set up? You should let that female heal up first. Additionally, have these fish ever seen each other or been conditioned? You can't just throw them together and expect them to breed. That's not how it works. Maybe some cases work but there's proper guidelines out there and it sounds like you are just making an excuse.

My main concern is the male and female together, this rarely works long term and if the female was in that condition when you got her due to living with a male it would be better to not put her back in that situation unless you’re planning on breeding. Even then this tank is not a suitable set up for that. Her fins should have healed after this length of time. Male and females living together in such a closed environment causes them over time a great deal of stress. This will eventually lower their immune system causing them to become sick. Having such an influence on people in animal care it concerns me others will go out and try the same thing without researching because they have seen it on your channel. I spend several hours a week responding to Betta fish issues. I’m sure you’ve done research before doing this but please look into it again. Love your videos and hope to see more of the bettas in the future.

Lifewithpets This is what I was thinking as no where in the video was it mentioned that this was a breeding set up- and to be honest it isn't. I have so much respect for you and what you have done with animal education on this platform Em but this isn't the right way to go about this. I hope it goes well and you get some cute little fry! You should deffo update us and show us the set up for the female when she's been separated!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Emzotic I look forward to seeing the breeding progress! I’m assuming you have another tank for the female once they breed. She can’t stay in the tank as the male becomes super aggressive once they’re done. Breeding is stressful for them they can get torn up pretty badly. I really hope you document the whole process for us all to see. You’ve a lot of work ahead of you breeding bettas is not like breeding most other fish. It requires a lot of time. The tank you’re using is not the best for breeding. The male will need to build a bubble nest and unless you lower the flow on the tank that is not going to happen. This tank is really not an ideal set up for breeding. Having other fish in the tank is far from ideal. The male will kill anything else in the tank once they breed. I think they need separating and more research is needed before going forward with this.

It's true! A lot of people don't know that beta should have a bigger tank other than a small bowl. I remember years ago we had close to a long 100 gallon tank and we had lots of different fish in it. The bowl we had kept the first beta fish we had gotten broke so mom plopped him in the big tank. He loved it and lived for YEARS! My sister now has a 75 gallon tank with a few schooling fish in it and recently got a koi beta to put in it. He's thriving in that huge tank. Great tank btw, it looks really nice. I love the log and algae combo.

I have a betta that I took home from my AP Biology class my senior year of high school. I had him in a one and a half gallon fish bowl and planned on buying a tank with some saved money. But after leaving for college, my parents couldn't be convinced to get and maintain one, which I understand. I still feel guilty about it but try to make it up to him by making his diet bloodworms instead of pellets and introducing a bunch of entertaining objects to his tank. I really want to own a rare koi half moon male betta late in life and I'm going to give him the biggest and most beautiful tank ever!

Krissy Albertson
Krissy Albertson - 6 years ago
it's definitely possible to pair bettas up with certain other species, but you really should not pair bettas together under any circumstances apart from breeding. Even betta sororities are notorious for being successful for many months and then suddenly having one of the females kill all of the others. Three of my four males I aquired as "adoptions" from PetSmart - one of these was returned to PetSmart with another male, both bleeding, both almost finless, because someone thought they would look pretty together even if it was a risky pairing. Hephaestus - the one I adopted - was lucky to live and had to be in a special isolation tank with meds for over a month, and he's still in recovery. Sometimes you have to consider what's best for the fish above what you want to happen.

Chloe doesmakeup its is certainly a risk and not one I recommend. It can be done but there is a lot of caution involved. I think its best to keep the Betta apart unless you’re looking to breed - which I personally am and then they will be separated.

Krissy Albertson
Krissy Albertson - 6 years ago
Brad3n_ boss912 hey there. Wanted to add to what the others have said - gold fish are also notorious for fin nipping their tank mates, which would put the bettas at risk. Depending on the species of goldfish, I'd say it's more likely for the goldfish to kill the betta tbh. Bettas can comfortably have tank mates, but you should always be careful with picking them out. I've personally had a lot of luck with various aquatic snails (apple snails and zebra nerites) paired with my bettas.

why would you even risk this? literally the cardinal rule of bettas is that they need to be alone. even when breeding, they don’t need to be together for long periods of time. you have a ton of followers so you should be really careful with what information you give out. there is already enough misinformation about bettas out there. just because they’re not actively attacking one another doesn’t mean they’re not stressed in this environment. also ottos are schooling fish and do best in groups of 6 or more.

You realize betta fish should ALWAYS be kept in solidarity right? That male and female will eventually fight to the death, and if not, they'll stress each other out until they get sick and die. I hadn't even heard of you until someone posted this horrible video to their page criticizing your husbandry. I didn't want to believe it but...I'm glad I didn't find you sooner. This is just ridiculous.
I hope you decide to make the right choice and either 1) take your fish back or 2) get other tanks to properly house them.

Also, didn't realize it at first but your filter is still way too strong. You need to slow down the flow or divert the current so it isn't pushing your fish around at ALL. Just because they don't seem bothered by it doesn't mean that they aren't.

yeah but you shouldn't use the standard flake food. It's best to use something like "nutrafin bug bites" as a staple and frozen/freeze-dried foods as supplements (bloodworms, tubifex, brine shrimp, etc.) Never feed them plant-based foods, it's bad for them.

This is a great sized tank for a betta. Unfortunately, you really shouldn't house them together at all. Even though they're not bothering each other yet, when they breed, it can be very dangerous. Even deadly. I'm sure you know they can produce 30+ fry and you'll have to house each one appropriately. I really suggest you separate them.

Hey Em! I love all your videos and you're great and informative, but I do see a few issues with your tank setup.
First and most importantly, it's generally regarded as terrible practice to keep a male and female Betta Splendens together in one tank except if you're actively breeding them and even then they should not be together for very long.  With other Betta species, it's usually okay to keep a male/female pair together, but with these guys you're likely to end up with some very stressed out and torn up fish. Secondly, while your oto is super cute, many people in the hobby recommend that you keep them in schools of a bare minimum of at least 6 oto cats because they are extremely social fish, known as "shoaling" fish because they are so dependent on groups.
That being said, I love that you're showcasing some fish on your channel as well because more people should get to see how beautiful a betta tank done right can be!

A betta was my first pet to die of old age (a year older than the books told me he'd live). He lived in a tank of about a gallon, on my kitchen counter (no filter). And he truly was a pet, a creature who loved to see me come home, and visibly wished that he could swim in the air and follow me around the house. He was a very chill fish, who didn't care about mirrors or being boss, and he didn't have any pretty colours at the shop. But he changed to blue and red when I got him home. Any attempt I made to make his tank prettier was met with indignation and attempts to make the things to go away. His name was Fred.

I'm a little confused by your decision to house a possible breeding pair of betta [bettas?] in the same tank when one of your fish is from a chain pet store. Is it not a touch irresponsible to breed an animal having no idea about its genetic history, and given chain pet stores (especially the bigger ones) don't always have the best reputation for selling well breed fish ? I'm sorry if this comment comes across a bit rude, I really don't intend it that way, I'm just curious about your thoughts.

I wouldn't put a male or female together??? In one clip the male was showing off/flaring up to the female, he obviously wants to breed with her. If she doesn't want to breed he could kill her, which is probably why her fins were being nipped so much in her previous tank, I would recommend either dividing the tank with a wall that they can't see themselves through or separating them since it can get dangerous for the female. But other than that, I love the setup, and both your bettas are very pretty!

I have a Betta fish. He has a five gallon tank for himself and some cool stuff for inside. Like a broken looking vase and a barrel with holes in it. He as dark little pellets for the bottom. And two different false plants. He seemed to be amazed by all the space when I first put him in. He kept going around and around exploring and I think for a little bit it sorta stressed him out. He was stuck in a little tub for who knows how long. But now he is a happy little blurber. You wave his fish food and a single finger tip at him to make him go to top to feed. He is happy and loves to see us walk by. He has lots of hidey spots and the fake plant he sleeps in as well.

In terms of how it looks I think it looks absolutely fine- the plants are only a couple of months old so they have plenty of time to grow in, and start spreading. You might want to get a few floating plants- the male will appreciate them to help build a bubble nest. The vallis at the back will quite likely try taking over your tank if its happy, but it'll provide places for the fish to hide in, and it should spread its leaves over the surface which is nice, and its easy enough to pull out the runners when they start going places you don't want them. Personally I'd let everything grow into a bit of a jungle, as that's the sort of environment Bettas like.

Carbon is honestly pointless unless you need to remove medications that you've had in the tank. After its adsorbed all it can it'll just act as a surface for bacteria to grow on. If you're replacing it, rather than buying more, I'd junk it and replace it with more biomedia.

There is next to no bacteria in the aquarium water, and without a source of ammonia your tank won't do anything. If you want to cycle a tank properly you need to either provide a source of ammonia (pure ammonia like Kleen-Off, etc is what you need- there's no excuse to do a "fish-in cycle" these days), or get a nice chunk of media from an existing tank. (an "instant-cycle")- as you already had a tank that's what I would have done. There are a variety of products that claim to be able to instantly cycle your tank. Some seem to be effective. Some are just snake oil. (And I'd still use liquid ammonia to start a new tank off anyway).

... Oh! I commented before afraid I would get yelled at for something I noticed. But then I finished watching and you asked for sharing of tips?? Less afraid. Okay, so I also wanted to say that Bettas tend to swim in one "level", and that a longer shorter tank more suites their natural tendencies. But that ideal ratio does not seem to exist in retail smaller tanks. Petco had one for a while that looked great for that, but it was only 6 gallons and they dont sell it anymore anyway. So that isn't really a criticism or anything, because there doesnt seem to be a solution to it right now anyway.

... I just realized how confusing that sounded, "longer shorter". What I mean is that tanks with a larger footprint and less height suit them better than taller tanks with smaller footprints.

I love your tank! I keep my Betta in a five gallon tank and he loves it. The only thing is my Betta nips his own fins and so annoying because he’ll let his fins heal and then he’ll do it again:/ there is nothing in the tank that can tear them either.

Hi Em! PLEASE separate the betta immediately. There are quite a few studies showing females are just as aggressive as males. Even if they don't go seem to go after each other right away it causes them both a lot of stress that will lessen their life span, and can cause egg binding in the female. The only time betta should be housed together is if you are trying to breed them and even then separated after the male transfers the eggs to his bubble nest. Housing them together is risky and I've been saddened to see many aquarists try to house male/female pairs or sororities thinking it'll be ok (and sometimes it is, for a couple months or a year even) only to suddenly find one of their fish torn apart. It really is not worth the risk just so you can have two in one tank. Please reconsider keeping them together and rehouse one of them into their own tank for their safety.
C. Kline
C. Kline - 6 years ago
The myth you can keep multiple together is JUST AS HARMFULL as the ones of them being able to be kept in small unheated tanks. I'm including a link that talks through one study of various betta housing arrangements, I know its a ~tumblr~ post and many have issue with the site but it is truly a well documented study https://tinyurl.com/y7hcyhna I've found the mindset of "I'll keep an eye on them" when it comes to set ups such as this is in the end cruel husbandry to the fish, and is only to satisfy the want of the aquarist.

The tank is beautiful! Just make sure the male and female get along because it can be dangerous for both fishies if they begin to fight (which is why its always safer to keep males alone). But it seems like you’ve got a handle on it and they seem happy ❤️

I am NOT AN EXPERT so please take this with a humongous grain of salt. I certainly don' know nearly as much about animals as you do. Okay, now that my disclaimer is over... It looks like they are struggling with swimming near the more open area because of the flow of water. Maybe more plants that could block the force of the flow?
Also if I could just move in with you guys... Or just near by!! Love all these animals you guys keeo. I wish I could see them in person.

My mum used to always buy betas but stopped recently cuz they kept dying so for Christmas we bought her a nice setup with a live plant and snail and filtration and is so much better! Please do not co-hab domestic bettas, whatever sex they are. It has been proven time after time and with some scientific results, that this never ends up well. Females are JUST AS aggressive as males and will beat the crap out of their peers given enough time. This is why sororities never work out as well. Mixing sex is not gonna work out either. Keep a domestics betta in one (1) tank and never cohab these very aggressive fish. I'm disappointed to see that a prominent youtuber is doing this and encouraging other to do so.

I’m a bit concerned that you’ve said you only cycled the tank for two days. I mean no disrespect, really, but cycling usually takes 1-2 months. I understand that you added water from an established aquarium however there is no bacteria in water (maybe very little), and you can’t really start a cycle by doing that.

Usually to cycle a tank you would an appropriate amount of ammonia, test daily and continue to add ammonia accordingly. Then once nitrates are present it’s considered cycled (The Nitrogen Cycle).

You said it’s been set up for a few months now so it’s likely established but just for future :)
dgodfrey9189
dgodfrey9189 - 6 years ago
They already had the tank. Why not just take all the media out the old filter and squdge it in the new one? Bingo, instantly cycled tank. (And its not "once nitrates are present", its once ammonia and nitrite are reading zero after adding it 12-24 hours before, most people have nitrates in their tapwater)

I'm glad they're doing well, but its still quite warm for them long term (kept too warm they'll live fast and die young, but you're certainly likely to see breeding behaviour). But its on the low side for the betta, which won't be happy that cool long term. There really isn't much overlap between those species. (And my WCMMs certainly love playing in the current from my powerhead, which a Betta won't cope with).

Reminded me of my 2nd betta Elly, i found Elly in a wet market fish shop in a 7x7cm container looking kinda dead, i bought him for 3 dollars and brought him home, i was not capable of giving it that big of a tank, but i gave it a new tank about 30x30 and some ferns, after a week it started perking up, started to recognise me and started demanding food for me in a cute manner of opening his mouth constantly, and his playful personality started coming out. They are actually very smart creatures capable of recognising and learning new behaviour :3

Their stomach happens to be around the size of their eyeball so its important not to overfeed though their eternally hungry HAHA i did feed small boiled chopped up peas to my bettas in the past to help them when their constipated, worked out well for me. :3 have fun with ur pair!

Awesome video! I really like that you are willing to put together an awesome setup for your fish and as always your videos are knowledgeable and very interesting. There are a few points I disagree with though and hope to hear your perspective on the matter. The first being that activated carbon does not remove ammonia, nitrites, or nitrates and is most often used to remove medications at the end of any treatment with sick fish. I don’t even keep carbon in my tank because it’s actually a bit of a problem in a planted aquarium and can remove dissolved solids that your plants need. Secondly, you can’t cycle a tank with just used tank water you need seeded media from the filter or a source of ammonia in the case of fishless cycling. It can also take weeks to property establish a tank. Finally, I know someone has already pointed this out but male and female betta should never be kept together unless you intend to breed them and the female still must be removed after spawning has taken place. That pet store should never have kept that female in a tank with the male long term that is extremely bad on their part. Betta splendens are not social creatures and will turn on each other seemly at random.

You should never house a male or female together unless you are breeding them. Which requires a special setup with lots of hiding places and way more research than i can cover in one comment. Even after they breed you have to take the female out or the male will bully her to death. It may take time but she will be killed at some point or another. Please remove her.

How was the tank set up? Tanks need to be cycled (and not the way Emz described I'm afraid) before they're ready for fish. If they're not then there's no bacteria to eat the ammonia the fish produce and that will kill them pretty quickly. Google "Fishless Cycling" for how to set up a tank properly.

Ah damn, nice tank and beautiful fish... but in my opinion and a lot of people will probably agree, shouldn't be keeping a male and female betta fish together. The male will likely stress the female out, as usually they don't live close by each other in the wild. Also they might breed, in which case if they do then you'll have a lot of babies to take care of, and also the male becomes very aggressive after breeding towards the female.

I recently got myself a female elephant ear betta. I don't quite have her tank how I want it yet, but I didn't have the money or resources to get it exactly how I wanted. I want to get her some more plants, most likely a floating one. Her name is Kitsune because her markings remind of a Japanese fox mask and she likes being sneaky. She has a decorative gazebo in her tank that she spends most of her day in and becomes much more active at night.

I am definitely no expert in fish tanks, but my only thing is I was surprised at how tall your tank was versus length. My understand always was bettas much prefer long, shallow tanks since they aren't strong swimmers and swimming horizontally is much easier. Plus having a long tank better replicates their natural habitat I think.
Suchnothing
Suchnothing - 6 years ago
I appreciate your shout out to giving Bettas (and any fish) an appropriate environment. It's the same thing with hamsters and other small animals - people think that just because they can survive in those tiny habit trail cages that it's appropriate (I used to think this too, so no shade on people who are just misinformed). As a teenager, I had a betta in a 10 gallon tank (much bigger than most tanks marketed for bettas), and with that much space, you really got to see his personality and interact with him more. He would follow me as I moved around my room, come up to the side I was at to interact with me, and go to his feeding spot when he saw I had the food container. He had a very gentle, patient, and curious personality, and lived for years. I'd love to get fish again, but I know I don't currently have the time or money to do it right. They're not as easy a pet as they're marketed as! Maybe someday...

So are you trying to breed? I've tried this, in the end the male will start to chase the female and possibly fight her. You will notice tiny bite marks and shredded fins.

Please don't keep these two together they'll stress each other out. Bettafish are notorious for hating EVERY other bettafish regardless of gender in their tanks. Sorority tanks with all girl betta are a thing but not something to be recommended to anyone - and as for male/female tanks it just never works out and they will kill each other eventually.

Hey Em! It looks lovely, but I really think you should reconsider keeping the female with the male. That size and with that current isn't necessarily appropriate for keeping them together successfully. Her tail didn't seem to have improved in the 'before' and 'after' month shots and it's very possible that the male has been picking on her whenever he gets the chance.
Also, Oto cats are very social and would be much more comfortable if you were to add two or three more into the environment.
Pleased to see an aquatic video from you!!

1. The flex is a great tank but be warned that the glass is really thin and can break very easily.
2. Male and females should NEVER be kept together unless breeding. They may be fine now but if he's flaring at her already, not a good sign.
3. Otos are schooling fish and should be kept in at least groups of 5. Which the flex is too small for.

Hi Em! I’m glad you’re trying betta fish out. The tank looks beautiful and it’s good that the bettas are getting such quality food! I made a lot of mistakes first starting out that I wish I had someone to point out to me; so I hope you don’t mind me jumping in! The male and female may not fight currently, but the possibility being there is enough that they need to be separated. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories of males and females getting along for months and months of time, only to fight to the death when the owner is away one afternoon. Plus it’s unnecessary stress and confusion about breeding to the fish which will affect their wellbeing over time. Even if they did get along okay it would still impact their health as they will be producing hormones and reacting to each other constantly. The catfish is also a schooling breed that tends to do best in 20gallon heavily planted tanks. It might be worth while to transition him to a situation better suited to him and it would be cool to see them in a little group swimming around. A nerite snail can get rid of algae from the glass and plants. Amano shrimp will also eat dying plants, detritus, and algae all while looking cool. They don’t have a high bioload and would do well in a tank like this. Mystery snails actually only half digest their food, so they can be more of a bioload then a helper at times. Breeders use them to help produce food for their fish fry on the glass for that reason. Make sure the snail gets calcium for its shell to grow beautifully. One tip I’ve learned and helped my betta’s health a lot was adding Indian almond leaves to the water. Rachel O’Leary has a great video on why they’re good in the water and bettas love them. I hope at least some of this was helpful. Best wishes and good luck!

Carbon does not remove ammonia from the tank. The only way ammonia gets removed from the tank is through the nitrogen cycle. Also the "concrete rings" are actually ceramic. Concrete could leach chemicals into the water and isn't usually considered to be aquarium safe. People will look at this video as an educational tool. It's very important to be accurate in what you tell people. Otherwise, it's a very nice tank.

Oh man Em. I was really excited to watch this because fish are more my thing but like a lot of other people have already said, keeping a male and female together is concerning and not ideal for either of them. I've gone through my own learning experiences throughout my fishkeeping career which have included many poorly stocked tanks so I don't blame you Em, but truthfully unless they are specific wild-types, bettas should really be on their own. If you absolutely want to keep the community tank vibe going though, I'd recommend rehoming these fish and getting some croaking gouramis. They look just like female bettas but they won't tear each other to shreds. And they croak! The tank does look beautiful though; I'll be on the look out for that fluval.

One other minor note, while that carbon will definitely start hosting some beneficial bacteria and convert ammonia like Danny said, its larger purpose is to clarify the water by removing other organic compounds like tannic acids and heavy metals through adsorption.
dgodfrey9189
dgodfrey9189 - 6 years ago
If the water is really soft and acidic there are some other species that would be worth looking at, they're much more peaceful than B. splendens, and some can be successfully kept in pairs and small groups without much problem.
Bethgirl12
Bethgirl12 - 6 years ago
I don't know if it the best to keep the male and female together but it seems that they're working well together, I just recommend keeping male Bettas on their own because they're very Territorial and they love to fight so just keep that in mind, love the video. It makes me happy to see that Bettas are taken care of better. #therenotjustfish

So glad you did this vid and used the Fluval Flex. I have been thinking about getting that tank just recently actually but was worried about the strength of the flow from the filter. Glad to know it doesn't seem too strong and doesn't stress your betta out. Thanks!

JADEMOTO His.. head fell off? How odd. I can only think that it must have been stuck somewhere and that he fatAlly injured himself trying to get free
dgodfrey9189
dgodfrey9189 - 6 years ago
At an educated guess, probably an uncycled tank- without a colony of bacteria in your filter the ammonia doesn't get turned into the relatively harmless nitrate. And you won't get a colony going without a source of ammonia.

Its a very common introduction to the hobby unfortunately. :(

I hated my fluval. LED lights are useless in aquariums because it increases algae growth. I could not get rid of the algae no matter what I did
dgodfrey9189
dgodfrey9189 - 6 years ago
How long were you leaving the lights on? Did you have live plants? That's going to be more of an issue that just them being LEDs- if that were the case then the aquascapers wouldn't be using them.

Arenos Karlaen

I recommend that you get another otocinclus since they are somewhat schoolers, really they should be kept in groups no less than six but since you have a small tank two would do. Oto's are far happier in groups/pairs and they will be far more active and less withdrawn.
Arenos Karlaen
Arenos Karlaen - 6 years ago
Emzotic There's no way you could even keep six on their own in that tank, though I would highly recommend that you get another so that it has a friend which in turn will make it much happier and that may even increase the activity of them and result in algae getting removed far quicker so that it doesn't build up and take over the tank.
I'm glad that you appreciated the advice as I have offered advice to others and they have been quite ignorant and brushed it off.
I'm about to get my first Betta sometime next week, been cycling my tank for over a month and I'm so excited. Even though I've never really kept fish before I do enjoy researching them so that sometime in the future I might be able to care for them.
Remember, Aquarium hobbyists are always here to help, in fact I think that most of them enjoy it.

I had betas for along time but I stopped after my fish Clyde died. Now I really miss having a beta so I'm setting my tank back up and getting one again. I own the Fluval Chi tank and my betas have always loved it. I've had multiple in a short amount of time because one sadly died of ich but it only showed on one side of his body and I couldn't see it since he would not let me and the other I had tetras in with him and they ate his food and ate his fins off.

As others have said I’d advise to separate them now. Its not just a case of keeping an eye on them, being in the same water hormone wise will be stressing them both out, not simply that they may not ‘get along’ with each other. More than likely you’ll come down one morning and find at least one dead. The most basic research tells you this. I just don’t want your followers to see you’ve done it and think it’s an ok thing to do cause it’s not. Save the bettas!

Hey Em! I'd recommend taking the female out. Captive bettas have been bred for aggression and don't do well together, especially in a 9 gal tank. They tend to seem okay or even great for a while, and then switch and kill the female (especially in breeding season if the female doesn't want to do anything, the pervs!) I'm just worried that because you have such a large following people might try to recreate it and get their poor fishies hurt.

Also, the otos are schooling fish and require a bit more space, like a 20 gal. Maybe you can move him over to another tank with friends so he doesn't get stressed (maybe a 20 gal with the female betta!) and try just snails for cleanup? The tank is stunning!

People take note:
Cycling your filter media normally takes a month or more to be completed properly. It is an integral process that you need to do properly. The beneficial bacteria stop the animals from basically choking on their own waste.
Water (especially from the tap) also needs to be conditioned with buffers, to remove chlorine, chloramines and heavy metals which are present in tap water for humans, but are toxic to fish.

If your water is not cycled or dechlorinated, your fish will live a short, miserable life and probably become ill if they live long enough.

Em and Danny could put fish in the tank after only two days because they put in established décor that already houses the beneficial bacteria.
Kebren
Kebren - 6 years ago
Your tank is really good, I have a male betta in a 9 gallon too. I would advise you separate them, as males could stress out females to the point of killing them if they stay together 24/7 for too long. Another advice is to switch the mystery snail to a nerite snail, they are much smaller, and have a tinier bio load, and algae is a higher % of their diet than mystery snails. Mystery snails can do ok in a 10 gallon (or 9), but I feel it is a little crowded. Just my opinion. Good luck with them, and I hope to see more updates!

My Betta loves those leaves you can attach to the top of the water. He hangs out on top of it all the time and just raises up a bit to get air. He’s the laziest thing in the world. Also, I’ve always been told not to put a male and female together because it stresses out the female so much. And do you feed them only blood worms and leaches? Seems like it would be too much protein for them, but I don’t know, that’s just my instinct talking. Wonderful set up though! Absolutely love it!

Just a tip ial (Indian almond leaves) are very good for Betta health care they are very beneficial you might want a sponge to cover the outlet so there is little to no flow in the tank you might want to invest in a Betta floating log Betta hammock (normally made out of coconut shells) Betta's loops for exercise and a Betta mirror use the mirror no longer the five mins it really helps strengthen their fins ..... sorry if you already knew that haven't watched the whole video yet

I’ve also done this to my Spec tanks for my bettas. I have the Flex as well and yes the current is much too strong for Bettas in my opinion, I’d suggest a sponge to slow the flow. Fluval does make very nice tanks though!

I dont think its a good idea to leave the male and the female in the same tank, maybe the male is younger or less agressive, but in general its stressfull on the female. should probably look out for that, also its a good idea to put natural leafs on the aquarium, since male bettas enjoy building bubble nests and its also present on their natural enviroment, theres a specific type of leaf which is commonly used in the hooby for bettas, but i cant recall the name right now.

Hi Em. It's not a great idea to keep male and female betta together other than for breeding purposes. Often they will end up fighting (sometimes to the death) and females can become egg bound too! It's even debated now if it's good to keep females in a sorority due to the stress and injury that can be caused to the fish. You have a nice big tank for your betta, but please separate them! Additionally your Otto needs to be kept in a group of at least 6 for it to be happy. Seriouslyfish.com has some great info on their site, so maybe check them out!
