Michelle Saskia it sounds like your fish probably had some sort of problem affecting its lungs which was why she was gasping for air. it's normal for bettas to come up for air occasionally but if they seem to be struggling and continuously gulping at the surface then something is affecting its breathing. I don't think it was anything you did but she was probably ill or exposed to a disease before you bought her and the stress of moving to a new tank might have weakened her immune system. Sometimes it's unavoidable. before you add any new fish make sure you do a full 100% water change to make sure there are no harmful bacteria in your tank from the other fish

I have a question about betta eating:
My veiltail betta who I named Orion just keeps spitting all his food out! I've had him for about a month and a half and he rarely will eat. I gave him different foods, hoping to find one that works. I gave him tetrafin slow sinking flakes, tetra betta floating betta pellets, API tropical fish food and even shrimp pellets out of desperation. Any help?

Hi Jennifer! I have just set up my fluval spec. However I plugged the plug into the wall and the filter ran for about 10 seconds and then cut out ? Is this normal as this is my first tank. I haven't bought a fish yet as i want to get familiar with the tank but it seems to have already broken. Is there anything I can do ?

A tip fir betta tanks: focus on getting high and dense plants. Those small things will not make your fish as comfortable bevause they need cover from the bright light. Their natural habitat are rice fields with a lot of dense plants.

Betta fish like to lay down, you should get him a bed. They are not fish that should be made to keep swimming and swimming, their muscles will give out. In the wild they beach themselves a little on rocks and flat leaves or even grass, resting their muscles and even sleeping.

For breaking in Mopani or any driftwood, Ottocinclus (Just one or two) love to eat that stuff right off. (But after that they'll need a tank where you can feed them Algae wafers and veggies) ..A dedicated 'grow out tank' for something like 'Watersprite' could theoretically provide a nice source of 'salad' for the goldfish. ((My first choice for a 'salad' plant would be Anacharis, (Egeria Densa) But it has been banned by many States for either import of sale)).

Do you know exactly what kind of driftwood that is? It looks a little like grape wood, which is one of the types of wood that is NOT suitable for underwater use, as it will rot. People use them for decorative purposes, or in desert reptile tanks where there isn't much humidity. Other types of wood that are suitable for underwater use are malaysian, mopani, manzanita, ghost wood and spider wood.

Just a tip, bettas do much better in dark surroundings! Bright coloured backgrounds or substrates are a no go for bettas, since that stresses them out. More plants and hiding places are also recommended. And some water surface movement (Not too strong obviously) or a small diy surface skimmer would help removing that protein build up! As you can see, there are still some things left to make your tank really betta friendly. Good luck!

This question is goldfish related but I have one orange goldfish and one white one. The white one is bigger and my parents told me to feed them to VERY small pellets twice a day each. But then I noticed that the orange one has had it's tail (I think) eaten off by the white one. Is this from lack of food causing them to eat each other?
Anita Angyal
Anita Angyal - 7 years ago
Hey, Im sorry but thats not at all betta friendly.. There are way too little plants in your tank, no place to hide for your fish. Also bright ground, bright light... both things that irritate and stress out bettas.
The algae grow because there are little to no plants in the tank that would absorb the nutrients so theres enough for the algae to grow.

Hi Jen! I wanted to know a very very important question. You inspired my love for goldfish but I'm buying a 55 gallon fish tank. But i don't know if i should keep 4 gold fish in there.
i wanted x1 Ryukin x1 Oranda x1 Ranchu x1 Butterfly Telescope. and some snails.
But i heard with 4 making it full stocked can have difficulty in Ammonia and Nirate and Nitrite. If I keep three in a 55 gallon with snails could I keep another goldfish by itself ? if so what size tank is good for ONE goldfish only

Get some nerite snails they will eat the algae and if your betta goes after them the snail can retreat into it's shell. I have a betta and two nerite snails in the same tank one tiger nerite snail and one zebra nerite snail. They all get along just fine and the betta doesn't nip at them or bully them of course all bettas are different. The snails won't eat your plants and won't reproduce, they will lay eggs which are tiny tiny tiny white dots on the glass and on the driftwood but they will never hatch in freshwater water. The eggs will eventually disappear on their own (about a week) or you can scrape them off with a algae scraper. Only females lay eggs but I'm not sure how to tell the sexes apart unfortunately. You could also get shrimp, ghost or cherry shrimp would work fine and where I live they are only $0.49 each the betta won't bother them (again depending on your bettas personality) and the shrimp will eat the algae and leftover food that your betta doesn't eat. Unfortunately my betta and snails are currently in a plastic tank (5 gallons with filter) and I've noticed on the inside of the tank there are tiny scratches from the snails teeth in the plastic so I am currently cycling a 10 gallon glass tank and moving the snails into that and then getting new fish for the 10 gallon and getting shrimp for the betta tank. Good luck with your betta and tank he is very pretty.

Only a five gallon? You are the one that taught me to always try to have the most place possible for a fish. i know that bettas don't need that much space and I also considere you as a pro, but really..? only five gallons? I don't know, i feel like this is to small for some reason... you take so much care of your goldfish, im really surprise you of all people put a betta in only five gallon, instead of like a 10 gallons... but yeah, you are a pro, im not... im just surprise...

You may have 1 now but be forewarned-bettas are addictive, you'll likely end up getting more!

The fungus on the wood is caused from sugars leeching out of the wood-the funus is eating it. You can boil the wood for several hours to put a fast forward on the sugar leaching to reduce the fungus.
I'd also strongly suggest getting some wet-dry sandpaper and sanding the wood thoroughly to avoid fin shredding-betta fins are extremely delicate. You can use a panty hose to test driftwood/decor-rub the panty hose of the time and if it snags slightly or full blow rips it will shred betta fins.

I don't really care for PAC plants, they mis-label/id many (i got dwarf sag when i bought narrow leaf pygmy chain sword, and received Echinodorus grisebachii (aka amazon sword-gets 24") when I bought echinodorus parviflorus (a dwarf sword-gets 6"). Not to mention the metal mesh used for ___mat plants is not stainless steel-its not shrimp safe. I buy most of my plants now from forum members on plantedtank.net, or an ebay seller that's sadly not selling atm due to damage from the recent hurricane.

You will be adding more things like plants in there, right? Bettas really like to be able to hide to feel safe and with that current set up he might get stressed. Please, if you aren't already planning to, add real or fake plants (that aren't sharp so that they don't cut the betta's fins) and give him a space to hide. Also, I am not sure if you already said this in the video or not, but if i were you I would consider getting a bigger tank. The current tank you have now is just fine, but if you're going to add more plants and decor then I really suggest getting a bigger tank.

Tetraspis
Tetraspis - 7 years ago
Do you have a heater in your betta's tank? I'm not able to see any so I wasnt sure, but just as a reminder I'd like to add that bettas absolutely need a heater since they are tropical fish that naturally come from a very hot climate. Some water flow should also help with the mold problem on your driftwood (where they originate from, the water there is constantly moving since the rice paddies are consistently being flushed with fresh water), and if you can find some plants or one of those cute little fake leafs with the suction cup on the back from a petstore for your betta to rest on that would be wonderful for him too. The plants can be real, but if you're not up for taking care of the larger aquatic plants then fake ones made out of silk would do fine. Betta also enjoy having places to hide in, many of them get stressed when constantly out in the open or exposed. A hide could be a sculpted one without paint on it, or even something simple like a small terracotta pot laid on its side with the hole in the back widened or even a piece of wood that is hollow.

Bettas with really large fins, especially rosetails, will have a lot of problems as they get older with being able to reach the top of the tank properly, their large fins will weigh them down and they will tire easily so they need platforms or large-leaved plants to rest on near the surface. Many bettas with large fins will also end up biting their fins off to get the weight off of them.

He is a really gorgeous color and it looks great in your living space c: Its good to see bettas getting well loved!

You should get some of the broader leaf varieties so he can rest on them if he wants. Just keep/grow it and inch from the surface and he will use it as a bed! Even getting some floating plants would be beneficial for him as they enjoy cover.

and no its not something you should expect with a tank ive only has it once you should put a stronger flow filter on
Brianna Harter
Brianna Harter - 7 years ago
they can handle it but they really don't like it especially if they have large fins.

also I've seen this stuff form even in my river style tank which has a pond pump creating a huge amount of flow.it just depends on the wood and how the tank establishes.
Bailee Jane
Bailee Jane - 7 years ago
+laura sutton the larger the bettas fins the harder it is for them to swim in a heavy flow. He betta has decent size fins so it'd be a bit hard for him to swim with a heavy flow. Not to mention every tank I different

I had a beta in my angel tank lots of water flow its a myth that they cant handle strong flow. & no it isnt something you should expect its directly caused by low water flow

Ecartts

Betta(s) is a beautiful fish and most of them are having interesting personalities ! Is often a real joy to have them cuz they interact a lot with you and a lot of them are not scared even when you clean their aquarium!

But I quit having them cuz many of my Bettas after 1 year or 2 (of doing fine) they were the first to have a problem / disease. And it felt (often) weird cuz I gave them good to great conditions ! (kept them always in a tank and never in a bowl or a frickin jar)

For me (especially when I compare them with other types of fish) they are not as resilient as some people say or like to think or to recommend them for beginners.

If you want a resilient fish that live longer than a Betta and its good even for beginners (to start your new hobby with) ? Go for the Black Ruby Barbs (they look like Tiger Barbs but they are peaceful and doesnt nip the fins like Tiger Barbs.. but make sure you have at least 5 or 6 to keep them busy with each other). They are very hardy, so disease is not usually a problem in a well-maintained aquarium (almost at all)! Also an adult male especially when in breeding mode.. will change his body color into black with some red fins and most of them are gorgeous). Also they are better than even Zebra Danios! (another often recommended beginners fish that can be a true buIIy.. or at least some of them)

If you still want a betta fish just be very careful but keep in mind that they dont live too long and sometimes you can also buy a 1 year old betta from the petshop. (and some of them live only till 3 years or even less). But if you have a betta that is very healthy and fine overall.. just be happy :) You are lucky !

I love the fluval specs! They're attractive, and awesome for betta! The modifications I made to make it betta friendly was to adjust the pump to its lowest setting, and since the flow was still too high, I punched some holes in the tubing (a permanent change though unless you can find a replacement tube of the same diameter, which I hear is a pain). I also like that you can hide the heater from view. I had to place a media bag over the intake filter since I couldn't stop my dumbo halfmoon from laying against the slots. (He prefers to watch us from that corner, and ignores the betta hammock). I used an aquarium decoration to keep the bag pinned flat so he wouldn't trap himself under it. (Someone else modified the slots with a metal screen, but I worried about metal in the tank.)I also modified a second fluval spec, and have been prepping it for another possible betta. However, I'm researching the minimum tank size for a dwarf puffer since they also do well with low flow tanks, and have some MTS snails established in case I decide to choose a dwarf puffer. Problem is... everyone's advice ranges on them from min 3g, to 5g, to 10g! So still don't know if I can keep a DP in the fluval spec. They're messy eaters... but so are my goldfish, and I'm already used to frequently vacuuming. If anyone on here is experienced with keeping dwarf puffers, what gallon size did you find to be most successful for 1 DP?

You can use super glue brand gel to put the anubius on the wood which is much quicker than the fishing line. Just put a good dab on the wood where you want it and stick the rhizome part of the plant in the gel and hold for a bit till the glue turns white, it will set up even faster if you dunk it in the water. Just a little planters tip. Nice tank and betta.

My only recommendation would be to add a couple solid hides. Bettas like having something they can duck into to hide in if they want; being too exposed can stress them out. And I'm not super familiar with Fluval tanks, but I'm guessing there's space for a heater in the filter unit? Hopefully you optimized that, since bettas prefer 78-80 degree water. But I love the elegance of this tank; simple but pretty, and the betta is super cute.

christindemarie still water can result in film on the water surface. Bettas don't mind soft flow that barely breaks the waters surface. Using a control valve helps to control that.

Water movement is good dude... Water movement allows oxygen to flow into your tank. Betta fish don't need water movement, because of how they're built, their gills can extract the oxygen without water movement.

David Ooi A lot of people were telling me to try amano shrimp with my betta in the fluval spec, saying that as long as they had a lot good hiding places they should be ok, and that some betta do well with them. I added two... and they did hide well for a couple of days. So I named them The Bubbagumps... He even continued searching the tank for a couple of days after, convinced there were more hiding to snack on. Oi oi oi
