You should definitely explain the terminology you're using. Define the item, explain what is does, then how to use it. I got thrown off a lot. Just my little advice. Great video

One important detail you left out is making sure your in deep enough water ie. Depth finder/ color of water before you start giving gas so you don't hit anything down below. That engine sinks down almost a foot on take off and you surely don't want to hit a piling or stump let alone churn some mud. Happy Boating

Not heir to the prop it's getting the boat out of the water and leaving just the prop in the water is what creates speed less drag from the boat the faster you go nice oddshots that it showed he was not trimmed up enough you can see the whole boat in the water if he was trimmed up like he should be only the rear of the boat should be in the water in calm conditions of course

Great advise! One thing new owners should know, and some not too new owners!
Running fast! Trimmed out! DONT make fast hard jerky turns! You might get ejected!!

You see n the video of the two Guys flying down the lake? The driver is looking at his graph ,while his friend is pointing at the buoy their fixing to hit.. last second the driver jerks the wheel left then back to the right.. next second both of them go out the starboard side! There's a video look it up!
Plus Dude isn't wearing a lanyard to his kill switch! So the boat is circling ! Another boat picks up the guy , they chase down the runaway boat ! And dude jumps onto the runaway and saves his boat!
Could have ended tragically!!

Pure awesomeness B Lat,,,, these new boats are monsters and most newer boaters have tunnel vision, I wish more pros would give tips on driving styles, my home lake is hartwell probably home to some of the worst boaters, not only they can’t keep boat under control, ie shine walking they also don’t know that there are rules of navigation, keep throwing tips out there, you’ll probably save someone’s life, ✌️ #putegoincheckbesafeoutthere

Mr. Latimer, thank you for this advice. No one shown me very much about my 1st new boat and I nearly killed myself and a friend by hitting the wake of a pontoon boat on a calm day at full throttle and trimmed all the way up. Being an experienced, I did not anticipate and could not see the wave clearly. I also did not know the wake That a pontoon boat can produce. I'll bet this may save some serious injury and lives. Tight lines. I'll be following you on tour and on you tube in the future.

New rods and reels: $1500. New electronics: $12000. Proper trim use: Priceless. Great tips B Lat. Just this morning saw a new boat, probably $65k worth, porpoising up the lake for miles. Bet he was complaining that he spent all that dough and the new boat rides like a rodeo bronc. Should watch your video. Thanks.

What speed do you typically run? I'm looking to upgrade boats soon and I am looking for at least an 18 foot boat with a 150. More than likely I will get a 19 or 20 with anything from a 175-225. I know the lakes I fish most guys run wide open, but when I went with a friend in a 20 foot ranger he only cruised about 35.

Thanks for the video. I bought a Champion 210/250 Merc and struggled to find something on this topic 3 months ago. You the man. I finally figured out to get the boat on plane from the school of hard knocks. It was scary with the bow up for so long but finally figured out on my particular boat that my steering wheel trim lever didn't trim quick enough. The trim buttons on the throttle control gets the job done quickly and efficiently. Once on plane, the final adjustments for optimal speed/fuel economy and the porpoising is done with the steering wheel trim lever. Helpful to know that the trim is your brake too. Didn't know that. Make sense now. Love your channel! Would benefit from a video on hole shots in shallow water without a hydraulic jack plate.
David Jessee
David Jessee - 4 years ago
There is no difference between the steering wheel buttons and the trim button on the shift/ throttle handle... unless you're just not pushing the steering wheel trim button hard enough to make contact.
There both just 12 volt switches that run into two wires on your trim motor

Your correct, I figured the same out as well. Throttle trim to plane from there fine tune with steering trim

How about chiming at high speeds any pointers B.Lat? My champion boat really chimes.
David Dickinson
David Dickinson - 4 years ago
On older go fast bass boats , champions included , balancing your boat port to starboard is crucial to minimize chine walk.
I installed a large carpenter's level on the front deck of my bullet . Set the boat tilted slightly port side to account for engine torque and it will minimize chine walk.
I would also keep 15-20 1lb bags of lead shot to rearrange to account for different passenger weight.

Hey Brian...thanks for the tips. I'm a fairly new boat owner and I have a question for you. I have a hydraulic jack plate on my bass boat and honestly, other than lifting it to fish in shallower water and lifting it to exit the water onto the trailer, I don't use it all that much when I'm actually cruising on the lake. Do you engage yours often in conjunction with trimming while actually moving on the water? Thanks in advance.
David Jessee
David Jessee - 4 years ago
One thing to be aware of is the water that's moving across the water pickup holes on the side of the gear case........ you don't want to raise up the motor too high as to overheat the motor from not enough water pressure... don't let the cavitation plate come out of the water. And remember when you make a turn at high speeds and high trim and jackplate high you will blow out your prop! You can easily catch a rake and get flipped out the boat..
Brian Latimer
Brian Latimer - 4 years ago
I have a video on that. It’s all hull specific. It just depends on your boat

A great video for bass boat owners. Driving a bass boat compared to pleasure craft is a whole different beast. It took me a while to figure out much of what you just talked about because I had no one to teach me. Safety first each and every time I get in my boat for me and my passengers.

You should also do a video for beginners so they know about common courtesy such as being untied for you back up to the rampand also once you get your boat on the trailer just pulled on up for you start fixing everything and give people room if you can it would be a good subject for video I believe

Joining a bass club helped me learn all those things before I even bought a boat. When the ramp is busy, courtesy is very important.
