Great video, you touched on a lot of important things. One thing that all boaters should really consider before taking to the water is take a safe boating course offered by the United States Power Squadrons or the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary.

I have all the stuff on my boat you mention, one added piece of mind is, I took out a policy from Tow Boat USA for under a $100.00 per year they will send out a recovery boat to get my boat and all passengers anywhere on the Great Lakes (where I fish) at no charge, if my trailer breaks down they will send a roll off to recovery my trailer/boat where ever I may be towing it. They also have a saltwater policy.

Yes a policy like that is a requirement with us too, forgo to add that in there, we use BoatUS but either way, I wouldn't leave home without it

Very informative video, especially when anyone can get on a boat and operate it without any training or education (if you were born before 1983). The first day we took our new boat out on Lake Erie we heard a distress call over our VHF for a boat sinking about 10 miles from our marina. It was a quick wake up call for everyone on board. Every time we have someone on board with us, I go over where all the safety equipment is, how to place a distress call over the VHF, and a few basic operation instructions of our boat in case of emergency.

Great video guys! Great tips!! Let me tell you shit happens quick. I was invited to go out on a friends 24 foot cc 35 miles out of Galveston and on the way back the engine through a rod and made a nice hole in the side of the engine. On a Sunday afternoon With the waves reaching 5 feet there was no other option but to Start it up and keep going. It was shaking so bad that the plug vibrate it out of the bottom of the boat and we started taking on water unknowingly. It was dark when the engine finally stalled and a 5 foot wave came into the back of the boat and swamped us. We had 15 seconds to put out a distress call and find the lifejackets and then all of a sudden another 5 foot waves came into the back of the boat and capsized it. We were in the water for five hours with 5 foot seas and no moonlight. It gets lonely out there real quick. Thank God for the Coast Guard!!

Good info....in addition to the equipment you mentioned, an Eprib or PLB are a MUST have on my boat!!! NEVER leave dock without them!

Great video. One thing I would add to your box. Get some quality glow sticks. Unlike batteries based flashlights they always work. And they work in the water. I would go as far as to attach one to each life jacket. I would also add a couple of emergency blankets. They take up next to no room. I bought about a dozen for about 5 bucks. They are dirt cheap and usually one use, but they reflect the heat or can keep you warm, even when wet. Just my thoughts. Thank you again for the tips.

Just wanna add also if anyone has the old plastic top fire extinguishers that you guys just replaced. They are almost all recalled from mid 70’s-2017 and are no longer coast guard approved.
