This is the true life story of Eddie Huang - a famous tattooed chef, rapper, metal head and comedian. He's brash, pointed, direct and in your face, foul mouthed. If you've seen or watched Eddie you'll understand the kid in the show. The show is his life when they moved to Florida. Look him up on Youtube. Do your research! https://youtu.be/_Ka85HxAQR0

JiaoziBaozi

I haven't read it yet, but I'm curious as to how close to the book it gets. It's based on a book written by the actual "main character" (the kid you don't like, lol) about his growing up. But I'm sure Hollywood exaggerated things, too. I think as time went on, the character development improved. But they do address their "americanization" later in the series, as in the family has been there quite a while. The parents even had a furniture store in Florida for some time before the move and the restaurant.

You made yourselves apear like idiots in this video, sorry. You are speculating about something without doing the minimum of research (ok you watched some episodes of the show but that apears to be all).
Accusing the title of being just for provocation while you yourself seem to just ride the hype around the show in this vid. As many gave commented before, the show is based on a book of this title which is actually based on the experiences of its author Eddie Huang.
Sorry again but this video is a shame.

I had to disagree with a lot of things in this video. I know these are your opinions but a lot of them sounded extremely ignorant to me. You guys seriously overanalyzed everything and I feel like you guys didn't do proper background research on this show. Some aspects of the Asian culture are too harsh and inappropriate for a damn ABC sitcom and they did a lot of the things they did for comedic effect (like bringing the stinky tofu to the potluck). I can understand that your guys' backgrounds make you feel like this show wasn't realistic or relatable enough but remember this show is supposed to entertain, not be some kind of documentary. They had to alter this show to fit the ABC image. And not every Asian American/Asian has the same experience as you guys so I don't like that you guys acted like your experiences dominated and represented all Asian families and thus this show's as well. Don't compare this show to Modern Family because white families are soft af and have a completely different culture from Asians. And I believe the title can be applied to the show because I feel like it represents how this Asian family still faced things that actual "fresh off the boat" families do. This family is Americanized but look at how some of the other characters treated the family because of their ethnicity and not to mention how they are still adjusting to their new predominantly white suburban environment (but I know this show title was taken from Eddie Huang's book). Overall, I think you're still entitled to your opinion on this show and of course not everyone will agree with it but you guys came at this with too much bias and little research.

The title is based of the book written by Eddie Huang, which is what this series is supposed to be based off of. That's where the title comes from. Eddie Huang even touched on the topic of why he chose this as the title for his book in a handful of interviews. A little bit a research should have been done before assuming why this and that was done for a show you are doing a review/critique about.

Ravyn Skye
Ravyn Skye - 7 years ago
Um, I'm a little confused... "This show is too stereotypical!" "ASIAN DADS AREN'T LIKE THIS FOR REAL!" ... Meanwhile, this show is based on a book about Eddie's memories of his actual childhood. For the record, my husband's parents hug him all the time, and he's almost 30 years old. His parents hug ME all the time. They are from China (his mother) and Vietnam (his father). I don't think all Asians are stone faced and stone hearted people. Southern Chinese/Vietnamese especially can be very warm and loving. My husband tells me he loves me, like, at least 2 to 3 times a day... In the morning when he leaves for work, when he gets home from work, and before bed... it's at least that much.

I disagree with some of your comments particular with your expectations of how the family should be. I found this to be a breath of fresh air. The joke about them moving from Washington to Florida and still being considered "other" set up the fact that the title was tongue in cheek. I understand though about the kid being difficult to relate to at first but I've seen 12 episodes or so (you guys seem to have seen only the first 4) and I like the kid more and more. He feels like a real kid. Bratty and selfish at times, confused and frustrated but in the end a good kid who will look after his family and others.

I hope you enjoyed more of it. I live in HK and find it a bit difficult to access episodes easily (watched the 12 eps on a plane)

I completely disagree with the usage of the term FOB...I have never used it in a derogatory way and it was always perceived as just someone who was Asian, didn't grow up in the States, has style, and culture less Western and more Asian...I must be way out of it if its used to indicate that someone is uncivilized... uneducated...
Vivian Cheng

Well, you guys are being stereotypical too. I was born and raised in Taiwan, but my parents are NOT those "typical/normal" Asian parents!! We treat each other with respects and share ups and downs together. How are you so sure to make a statement that Asian parents don't open up to their kids?

Even the dad, Randall Kim is not Chinese/Taiwanese. He's Korean. The show is about Taiwanese family and one of the main actors is Korean? There's an Australian show called The Family Law which is similar to this show, but it's got so much more Asian-ness to it and is much more enjoyable. It's hard not to compare the two because they are both based off of biography, both are of the same genre, both the moms are strong and open minded, both dads run a restaurant etc. If you like this kind of TV shows I highly recommend you check it out

I think the term fresh off the boat is not as derogatory from an American point of view as it is for you. we only mean newly arrived, doesn't speak English, or understand the culture. Americans don't generally know enough about the culture newbies come from to say they're uneducated and uncivilized. I wouldn't think those were common to most immigrants.
Bree Bridger
Bree Bridger - 7 years ago
I think the "Fresh Off The Boat" title is tongue-in-cheek about them moving from DC to Orlando -- they are adjusting to a new Western culture than the one they already adjusted to in DC. Much of the 1st season is about adjusting to living in an all-white community when before they were surrounded by other Chinese and other minority families.

That's not what FOB meant where I grew up. It mainly refered to differences in style and language.
I think the show, while funny and relatable in some ways, is too stereotyped. The title, as you said, is a misnomer, and in my mind contributes to the stereotype that Asians are perpetual foreigners.

I agree with your assessment of Eddie's character. He's suppose to be the star of the show but something is not connecting with the character. The Huang Family are so use to the lifestyle in the big city and surround by other Asians & minorities. The reason why it was called Fresh Off The Boat, because they move to a new town, where it is so White America, did you get the joke or not. I know the title to that term means a foreigner coming to a new world, but the title so damn catchy and its relatable to everyone, for example, like a City Slicker moves to the Country side or the opposite. PS I love the show, it so remind of my childhood. Thank You, Eddie Huang!!!

These guys obviously haven't really watched this show completely, they should watch more episodes and put their viewpoint on this. And they should know that this was based off the real Eddie Huang's memoir (book) "Fresh Off The Boat: A Memoir", so his lifestyle was different than these guys or the majority of Asians or Asians Americans, in my opinion. What really annoyed me is that these guys said that the dad was an "Asian man trapped in a white man's body". That really annoyed me, because just because a person acts a different way as one race would see that their majority of their race acts or should act, doesn't mean they are trying to be another race. Also, how is this show supposed to be relatable? Sure, I've heard some Asians or Asian Americans say that "Fresh Off The Boat" is relatable to their culture, but it is based off of someone else's life...IN THE 90'S!!! Some people just judge a book by its cover without knowing about it's content or anything. When I watch, "Fresh Off The Boat", I don't view this as a typical Asian/Asian-American family. I see it as a funny show, and that is all.

Eddie Huang's parents are atypical because they're based on Eddie Huang's actual parents, who are real people, not fictional characters formulated to be 100% representative of most Asian parents. Eddie's dad acts like that because Eddie's real dad was like that. The show does omit the corporal punishment and generally tones a lot of things down from the memoir. Like in the memoir the kid who calls him an ethnic slur is white I think, and he fights him in stead of just cursing him out. I think that this is more about the network not wanting to depict a woman bullying her husband into beating his sons with a belt while still trying to make her a sympathetic character, or depict 10 year olds beating the crap out of each other, all while trying to maintain a comedic tone and not scare off advertisers. The show is called "Fresh Off the Boat" because that's the name of the memoir, which is a reference more to the "eternal foreigner" stereotype and Eddie Huang's unique personal views on his identity, feeling like an outsider despite being totally Americanized, as if the white people around him will always view him as an immigrant, no matter how assimilated he becomes.

I do not disagree, but these guys poured some realism into their critique. Their comments simply expressed that their childhoods were not such as we see in the show. It also seems certain creative liberties were taken, like making Randall Park's character more fun-loving. Is it possible Eddie Huang's real-life dad was more strict? Did Eddie's grandmother really help him achieve more thug-type swagger? Would Asian parents really side with their children, if called in by the principal? Would Asian children really defy their parents? All good questions. This show makes for very good comedy. It is only a show, after all.

R E L A X about the title, dudes. The title is "FRESH off the Boat" because the show is set in the early 90s and the main kid is obsessed with hip hop. Two things:

1) The show is based off of Eddie Huang's life. It's not meant to encompass every singles Chinese/ Asian family.
2) You guys seemed to have a lot of expectations for this show. Just curious, if there were other shows with a large Asian cast on TV, would you guys be as critical? Because the burden would certainly be lifted off this show. As it stands, you guys made this show to be the one and only show that should represent Asian Americans and it shouldn't have to.

So I know that you guys may not like this comment but that's fine. You made a like/dislike video based on a show that you watched. That is completely fine :D. However, I feel like when you do a review on a show you should do some research. So this show is BASED VERY LOOSELY on the memoir of Eddie Huang. Eddie Huang is a American born Asian, in which his family comes from Taiwan. But here's where I have issues a few things you said. The name of the show "Fresh off the Boat" was picked because it was the name of his memoir and vice documentary that he created. In the same respect I completely agree with you on the chris comparison because it is the asian equivalant. Sorry if people didn't like the comment just wanted to float my opinion out there.

Hi, love your channel. So, I know your comments were focused on the TV show, however it's very important to understand that the author of the book on which it's based did not write a script. Also I don't think that it's meant to be a universal depiction. Eddie Kwong's personal experiences what he expressed in the book and that was what was interpreted and modified into sitcom format.
I wanted to check with you if you had watched Eddie Huang's interview talking about this TV show based on his book Fresh off the Boat.
Thank you for your commentary and I appreciate your representation of Asian-Americans here on YouTube :-)

I think OTGW was a bit harsh in the review. The reason FOTB is relatable, just like Everybody hates Chris - great comparison, is because the show's writers smooth out the edges of anything too "alien" about the family.
Are they assimilated rather than FOTB, yes. But remember that to the general public most ethnic families are seen as alien and immigrants even if they were several generations deep in the US. The fact that they're an asian household is alien enough for most people, which is 'effed up but true. How many times have you been asked where you're really from?
The hook that landed me to keep watching the show was the kid, who you guys really didn't like at all. I was an immigrant kid, albeit Latino, trying to fit during the same time period, not wanting to bring home made food to school, wore the air jordans, loved my hip hop and balanced out the external culture with how I related with my family in our ethnic environment that would have been weird to outside viewers.
I would propose that the best thing about this show is that it serves as another bridge between the asian community and the "mainstream" in popular culture. In this case as a tv show that pulls non-asian viewers to relate to the family and characters. To see that they're not all that different from us. In that sense, that is how this show is a game changer. Are there stereotypes and cheesy jokes, yes. But, it also does what the Cosby Show and many others have done by making an asian family not seem like an alien family, but making them an all-American family in their own flavor.

It being like everybody likes Chris is half right, this is much funnier though. I really like Chris Rock, but fresh off the boat is quite funny. Regarding the name it comes from the book on which the show is based, a memoir from Eddie Huang.

I would agree that the show relies a little on stereotypes at the beginning, but I think this is partly to make the show instantly accessible to people, but also you can't break a stereotype without addressing it. I think having that as a starting point allows the characters to grow and take people on a little humanising journey. I'd really like to see the show do a little education on modern Chinese history, I think the fact that they are a taiwanese family is a great opportunity. Obviously it's a family sitcom so there's only so much you can do or expect but king of the hill did a good job for giving a little insight into Laotian history.

I have yet to sit down to watch this show in its entirety. From the bits I've seen I'm not into it. I'm a Nigerian American and I watch Blackish. The Blackish family is definitely weird. The beginning of the season was rocky and I didn't have much hope but it's better now. I hope the Fresh off the Boat show will get better as well. As for an Asian romantic lead, the show, Selfie had one. I'm sad that it was cancelled because it was a great show. I was absolutely elated that there was finally an Asian male romantic lead in an american show, but of course it did not last.

What I enjoyed most about the show was a pretty valid representation of the settling experience for many people that now call the us their home. Some of the things you mentioned is reason why Eddie Huang the creator of the fob book and show is upset at the direction of the show. He was hoping to show how its like with asian parents and living here and being "fob" but abc wanted the show to go in another less realistic direction. eddie has been verbal about this lately. he seems unhappy with the show now.
Gilberto Ruiz
Gilberto Ruiz - 8 years ago
So you are saying that asian use the term FoB to describe an asian person with no manners, uneducated, uncivilized, and don't wanted to absorb the culture and stay in chinatown. Mmm.... Let me see, the mother wanted to stay in chinatown, the kids are uneducated because well they are kids and Eddie is most of the list. I think the author of the book (Eddie Huang) was trying to play with the notion of this derogative term FOB on how he felt in his formative year in america and how he make peace with it and reclaim his identity. I think the series just do that in every episode. all the characters are trying to fit in and find their place in society. Whatever deference they show with white, afro, Italian, greek or jew families  at the end those deferences is what make them an American family.
Eddie Kang
Eddie Kang - 8 years ago
Agree w/ Nanda below.  Really annoying that these two guys don't see this as a show but want it to tell "The Chinese FOB Story" when the reality is that everyone's story is different.  Depending on the age that your parents came/ country they came from/city they immigrated to/socio-economic level/ other factors, everyone's experience is very different.  These guys hating is really annoying and doesn't help the cause of getting Asians on TV more and eventually having the rest of America see Asians as just as American as those that immigrated from other countries.
Nanda Sutrisno
Nanda Sutrisno - 8 years ago
One thing to remember: This show does not mean to represent all Asian American families, but means to shed light and humor on one guy's experiences as an Asian in the US. Yes, it was a highly anticipated show, but that does not mean that you should expect your own experiences as an Asian to be expressed through this show. In fact, by criticizing the show for having a dad that's "not Asian enough" and an "unrelatable main character" you're missing the show's intent. Fresh Off the Boat conveys that there is no such thing as a normal Asian family. It's a heavy burden for the show to claim that they are representing a whole group of people, just like us Asians can't really describe every single individual Asian experience.

I mean, my dad is Asian and he is a LOT like Randall Park's character. He is not a white guy trapped in an Asian man's body; rather, he embodies what a lot of people come to America for: a bright future for their kids, financial opportunities, just achieving the American dream. As for the show's title, my interpretation is that no matter your background, people here are going to look at you as an Asian before they see you as your own person, and so labels are going to happen and we have to fight that. Also, Eddie is supa fresh!

the only laugh out loud scene for me so far in the show were the scenes with the parents talking with or arguing with the principal.  maybe the supermarket scene from episode 1 as well..  the rest of the show are in pieces, a few random chuckles here and there thanks to Constance and Randall, but the scripts are really bland... and the supporting characters are such badly written stereotypes, the 2 younger children, the Stepford moms club, the group of kids the main character hangs around with at school, ...  i'll refrain from commenting on the Chinese spoken by the "Chinese" family.  if i want stereotyping humour(of the non-Chinese in the show) with horrible pacing, i'll go watch 2 Broke Girls.

Just goes to show that not all Asian families are the same. You talk about stereotyping but say that an "Asian family would never do this or that" --this show is based on one instance of an Asian American family living in America. While I didn't agree with everything, I found some relatable points. That whole cafeteria scene hit it home for me. I hope the show delves much deeper into the relationship between Eddie and Walter if there's a 2nd season.

I think you guys stated more stereotypes than the show itself. First you said the title didn't match the concept, and then complained about the fact that they weren't representing the stereotypical Taiwanese-American family. Main point, they weren't "Fresh Off the Boat", they were assimilated, as you pointed out repeatedly. You sounded like you were trying to make Asian families an exclusive group of people when really they're not. They were trying to show that their family was American and like any other family, even though they looked Asian.

TLDR : Your commentary made Taiwanese-American families seem like they can't be American.

I watched it, I'm not Asian but I'm married to one (although maybe WMAF families are such a rapidly growing segment of society that we deserve our own show!) Beyond Science guy was totally right on everything, it is just like Everybody Hates Chris and the family are in no way FOBs. I was always going to compare it to Fresh Prince, which is the closest thing to an American family sitcom that I've enjoyed (I'm British), although perhaps it should be more similar to the infinitely superior, Malcolm in the Middle. Malcolm in the Middle is way better entirely because of the writing, therefore the child actors have such great material to work with; this is a Fresh Prince style sitcom which is more broad and made in the post-canned-laughter age, which is difficult, and the writing is not good enough to make the kid an appealing character.

I loved the Idea behind the show so I really wanted to love it but unfortunately I don't like it so I stopped watching it. It's not really funny, the Title is misleading, the acting isn't that good, it's quit unrealistic and over the top in a bad way.

I understand how the show doesn't sit well with the Asian community but it is an eye-opener for those who are unfamiliar with that culture. We all know it's just entertainment so we know it's not gonna be completely accurate. It's not a doc, it's a comedy. But also, since I've lived in Korea the past 6 years and married into a Korean family, the show has actually helped me understand a few things about my wife's family. Anyway, I still enjoy the show despite the inaccuracies (I'm with you guys on the bad title and the kid's character).

i also found it to be racist. i agree that the writers are trying to do too much. if they just settled in and tried to make a story about ONE family instead of trying to cater to ALL ASIANS, i think it would be a much better show. but yes, it is a problem that this is THE ONLY ASIAN show on network tv. i dont know what the first BLACK family sitcom would be, but i imagine they probably went through the same growing pains of identity crisis...and other black people probably pointed to them and said- "we're not like that; black families arent like that; you are just showing a white family story with black actors"

I'm black not Asian at all but I must say you guys seem a bit critical.  I think maybe because you are a bit older you pick up all those stuff, but from lots of Asians I've met they really seem to be like the Eddie character they relate to him and  really love black culture, especially at that age.  I lived  in Japan for a few years and  most of the teens and preteens really did relate and yes talk back to their parents as he did. For me, I'm just glad to see Asians represented on TV and not just at the restaurant or sidekick or karate :)

OMG, I wish you did a little research. The title of the show is based of the book, which Eddie Huang (real dude in real life) wrote. The story if based off Eddie's childhood, so it's his story, not a typical Asian American story. >.>

A realistic representation of a Chinese family would never make it to television. Americans would probably be too shocked to see such a cultural difference. FOB tackles a minimal amount of Chinese culture to the point where whites can enjoy it. Regardless, even though i can't relate to the show (since the family drama is too toned down), it is a huge stepping stone for asians in the media... which is nice.

Well, there are SOOO many things. I'm afraid the reply will get too long but yeah.
In the show, the family is Chinese or either Taiwanese (I don't exactly remember). However, the show doesn't focus on the fact that it's chinese, but it just conveys an image of "Asian Immigrants". In Asia, they don't recognize themselves as Asians, they recognize themselves as their nationalities. So the fact that a type of people, who are not even "one of us", get to represent "us" is extremely disturbing. And especially when it's described in a humiliating way like the family in the show. Although the family in the show live in a nice house, they act like some ghetto people with no manners no education what soever, even if the person who's watching the show is a lower income person, they won't act that way. The family in the show act like people with no dignity at all. And East Asia is so much more modern and developed at least compared to the way the family in the show's home country is represented (Yes even China). So people will be annoyed that Americans are displaying Asia as a shit place.

Most tv sitcoms have been doing endless story recycling since I Love Lucy and The Donna Reed Show. I have seen few new twists in decades.

I have seen just a few episodes and it does appear the show is a bit disjointed but there have been some dialog gems and the cast is likable. When Wu's character tells the new babysitter about her mother, that she will fight you for dominance then fall asleep... loved it. A German broad with big honkers walks into a bar...  funny.

If I might point out, the style of the character telling of his experiences goes back at least to a short lived sitcom called My World And Welcome To It. It was about a husband and father (played by William Windom) who was forever befuddled by his wife and daughter  The show was well received but sent the feminists through the roof and soon was cancelled.

Both of you need to do research before criticize about the show,, first of all, FOB is based on Eddie Huang's memoir,, He was living in DC's Chinatown before moving to Orlando's western neighbourhood,, Living in Orlando is a gamechanger for Eddie, even to his mom/dad,, you should've know it if u watch the show. They're struggling to adapt into the neighbourhood. OMG do you guys even watch the show?!

Asians who didn't laugh with stereotypical jokes are just as racist as the others.. You guys have bold western accent, and you criticize the actors? some of them are Koreans for f**k sake.. Randal Park is korean, and the grandma on the show is Korean too.. you guys haters can't expect these actors speak like Taiwanese,, I don't know where do you guys live but both of you seems like had live in western country for long time from you accent. I dare you to make video how Taiwanese speak English as natural as it should be..

You guys made Asian stereotypes worse than ever by how you want the show represents your blood perfectly.. I'm Chinese Indonesian who live in Chinatown for 20years, and now i live and work with local people. I can relate to the show, i find it very funny and not offended at all.. Or are you guys raised by tiger mom? You just make yourself looks bad..

I think you guys are being WAY too hard on the show (typical hahaha)  I grew up with a Taiwanese mother..and they got it right. Right down to my mom ALSO trying to obtain her own real estate license and in crazy competition with neighborhood friends!  As far as not liking the kid Eddie, you guys must have not been caught up in the Biggie Smalls/Tupac juggurnaut in the mid 90s, so naturally then you don't get it (and really shouldn'tbe hating on him if you don't--I'm a little protective of him because I was the same kid, just in a female body and it was all I could do to be Queen Latifah) But for real, the show is crazy charming; good for all ages; and I hope it stays on for a good while. And I, for one, plan to REPRESENT in full.

I have seen these qualities in many East Asian immigrants, granted the show is a bit exaggerated. The last remaining store in my neighborhood is run by a family from what was then South Vietnam. Over time I got to know them and from time to time I'd get in a heated argument with the wife over some political or historical event and out would come the "Jessica". Her husband is a Louis sort of character.

I don't think this family is representing Asian parents and Asian families. They are representing Eddie's parents and Eddie's family. This is a family in America that happens to be Asian. The dad character does not represent Asian dads whatsoever- he represents Eddie's dad. You need to see this as an American show and not a representation of Asian people- my family is not like this at all.

Fresh off the boat is the Asian version of black-ish (I don't like that title to that show as a black woman either).  They are going to whitewash any minority show on TV, because in Asian culture and in Black culture, some of the things we do are considered too harsh to white people. Besides, I don't like that fact that these types of shows have to make race so prominent.  If they show a family... a realistic family, you will see parts of their culture without them going so overboard or taking away realism.

This video pretty much summed up my feelings about the show. I don't love it, but I don't hate it. I couldn't figure out why I dislike it, but the things said in this video gave words to my feelings. Thanks for posting this!
Also, I can't stand by the "Lets be happy that we finally have a show that represents our community" cheer I hear a lot. The show doesn't represent/depict what is implied by the title, as Michael said. That was my biggest issue with the show. The family isn't fresh off the boat. The issues depicted in the show may be representative for what Asians face in America, but the family dynamic is not a fresh off the boat family dynamic, at all. I'm just reiterating what was already said in the video, so I won't go on.
But thank you for giving words to the feelings I couldn't define.

Hey guys, good to hear your thoughts on the show.  I truly believe the producers struggled with many of the issues you discuss.  They had to balance the authenticity of the premise of the show with the ability of the show to engage with a general audience (audience = $$$ = longevity.)  I completely agree that the parents are carrying the show, they're both great looking and the writing does seem to favor their characters.  The mom is exceptionally well written and executed.  I'm Hispanic by the way, if that matters, and I really enjoy the show.  Quick question to the guy on the left with the sweater:   You never heard of "Everybody hates Chris"? FOTB is a memoir from an Asian (Eddie Huang) I think its very stupid to say that it is racist when the definition for being a racist is 'a person who believes that a particular race is superior to another.' I do not think that FOTB is doing this in any way. Unless your accusing Eddie Huang as a self hater which is completely the opposite to his actual character. Its a very good series and just presents an account of his childhood. People need to stop trying to think in the ways that they are taught at school about race etc.

I like the parents on the show. For me, this was breaking a trend of the last 30 years of stupid parents being controlled by the kids. All snark and disrespect.  Eddy's parents can PARENT! They aren't clueless idiots like most sitcom parents. Eddy's father actually tells him the facts of life. Eddy's mom and dad stood up for him in school when he got pulled into the principal's office. Most parents would jump down the kid's throat for causing problems. Maybe it would have happened after they got Eddy home, but he got defended when he needed it.

I think that Fresh off the boat was meant to satirize the term. In the show they move from a more affluent culturally adjusted city to one that has a serious lack of non white families. It applies the concept of moving from somewhere your use to, to a place where you are totally a fish out of water. That plus it is a term that is commonly associated with Asians and used by Asians within the Asian community. The fact that they were already so Americanized and they moved to a place where they had so much trouble fitting in played off the idea much better I think.

I agree with many of your points, particularly about liking the parents for their humor and wanting to root for them and not liking the kids/not wanting to root for them and also feeling uneasy about how the show doesn't know what it wants to be. I think the Eddie Huang character on the show isn't sympathetic enough, as you said. Unfortunately, I disagree with you on thinking that this show will open the door for more Asian actors and Asians being represented in entertainment media. I'm not saying it definitely won't, but it should be too early to tell. Remember how there wasn't a boom in roles for Asians after the Harold and Kumar film series and Margret Cho's sitcom? It's all very gradual.

To address your views on being unable to related to Eddie Huang's obsession with hip-hop, I'd like to point out that you're probably dealing with a different kind of east and west disparity: the east and west coasts of the U.S.! I grew up on the east coast of the U.S. and practically all of the Asian guys who fit in were all about hip-hop and the ones who weren't, completely fit the bookish stereotype. I'm Chinese-American and had a friend who was Bangladeshi-American and he and I would often talk about how we were the only yellow and brown kids we knew who leaned more towards the rocker side of the divide; everyone else being obsessed with hip-hop. Asians who want to socialize really do take to hip-hop like a fish to water; that's one of the "true stereotypes" for Asians in America… at least on the east coast. Hip-hop is more accepting to them; even ebonics' syntax and pronunciation is more in tune with how Asians would talk. Why I said it's probably a difference between east and west coasts is that California has a lot more Asians than the east coast, so it's probably easier for Asians to fit in without adopting something from outside themselves. My sister didn't really "get back in touch with her Asian side" until moving out to California. Also, from what I heard, the real-life Eddie Huang is obsessed with hip-hop.

I think you guys are hating on the show a little too much. lol It's based off of Eddie Huang's autobiography, so it might not be representative of every single Asian American story. It's Eddie Huang's personal story. And you also have to take into account the time period that this show is taking place. America nowadays is not the same as it was back then. There are definitely a lot more Asian Americans now than before, so your story will not necessarily be the same. Back in the 90s, hip hop was a huge thing. Many Asian American boys were really into that whole hip hop thing because there were no Asian American influences or music they could look up to. Black people were starting to have their voice heard in the American mainstream media. And Asian Americans also had that minority mentality, so they kind of got into the whole hip hop movement. And contrary to what you said, I believe Asians living in America do experience racism just like other ethnicities. It just might not be too apparent nowadays because a lot of Asians hangout mostly with other Asians most of the time. But once you step out of that bubble, you do notice it. Asians who are not that tall and big may experience more straight forward racism because other people feel it’s okay to pick on that small, scrawny Asian kid because they do not see you as a threat. That’s something that many Black people and Latinos do not have to deal with; they deal with another kind of racism.

I disagree that Asian parents don't defend their kids for standing up for themselves. That's probably one of the only things they will praise. Like they'll say keep a low profile, but if you have to stand up for yourself, then you had better fight to the death.

IMO, the "racism" and stereotypes had to be put in the first few episodes (and this stuff happened to Eddie Huang in real life anyway). A lot of Asian American's deal with a lot of shit starting from when they're young, especially if you're thrown into a predominantly white community... I see it as entry-level education for Americans who are unfamiliar with our struggles (because let's be honest, this family is a heavily censored version of a real Asian family haha). I really like it personally. I'm glad Asian kids of this generation can watch the series and have it as part of their childhood.

I agree with most of it. Few people things: to further argue against the title, the family was in DC before moving into Orlando. Also, let's not forget that whatever stretches the show may have made, in general, the series is still based off of a true story of an individual whom we may or may not always relate to, depending on the situation.

You say asian men are undesirable to Americans citing the lack of romantic comedies with an asian lead.  However, I think any movie with Jet Li is a romantic comedy: Romeo Must Die, The One, Cradle to the Grave, etc.  Also, I would totally lick Dan.  Just saying...

Movies and tv shows are made for profit. If you want to see a show where the love interest is of a specific race then go to a country where that race is the majority. I enjoy the show but you have to realize the show only exists to show commercials

My thoughts on the title: For starters, "Fresh off the Boat" clearly means something different to me than it means to you all. While it can be an insult, I find that among my friend group (primarily Chinese and Korean), FOB can be EITHER positive or negative. Or, most often, its just a neutral term used to refer to those who are international student or are just closer to their parent's culture than to American culture. Obviously, the origin of the term was meant to be insulting and when a non-Asian describes someone as Fresh off the Boat it can be demeaning, but it seems to have been reclaimed and turned into something else when used by Asians to describe ourselves or other Asians. And I do often see fairly Americanized Asians describe themselves as FOBs as a means of telling off the haters: "so what if I'm not completely Americanized? Proud to be a FOB" you know? And in that sense, while Eddie Huang's family might not seem very fobby to those of us who actually are fobs or have parents who are total fobs, they certainly are "different" than a typical white Orlando family in the 90s. And in that sense, yeah they are still FOBs to them. And thats the premise of the show - Eddie is struggling with the tug of war between escaping fobiness and embracing it.

Wow this was such a horrible critique of the show. A heads up for the next review, your opinion would've counted for something or remotely valid if you had done some research into the show, the memoir that it's based on, and who and what the author went through growing up as an asian American in a primarily white neighbourhood. Regardless of whether he was born here or just arrive from Taiwan, he talks about his experiences and struggles assimilating into a new neighbourhood of primarily white culture and people. Yes there's racism with the black kid because that was one of his racist accounts he experience which he mentions was a prominent moment in his life that changed how he viewed the world after and no it was just placed there to be funny. You complain that they play off of the stereotypes too much but then criticize the parents for being unrealistic. What the hell do you want? To be able to relate to the show or that it's not accurate to YOUR envisioned stereotype of the typical asian American. I think you two are completely missing the point of the show that asian Americans even if they're not fresh off the boat have issues assimilating or conflicts between the western and eastern cultures. I don't find anything wrong with the dad, if anything in the memoir, Eddie Huang and he had an open, unconventional relationship. The fact that you two don't acknowledge this dad as a realistic portrayal of an asian dad just because he's not like yours in turns shows how people like you that stereotype/generalize misconstrue others' perception of an asian dad. This show has stereotypes but breaks them too and thus is the bridge of a better understanding of asian culture that isn't seen in Hollywood. This review was so unbelievably shitty and contradictive.

There's a a lot comments that I disagree with you about in your video. The first being the title of the show. The show is based off the book called, "Fresh Off The Boat." Eddie is based off of the author's childhood experiences. This is a tv show, so of course story lines will be exaggerated for comical reasons. In addition, your definition of FOB was anything but offensive. You defined a FOB as, 'uneducated, no manners, uncivilized, and inconsiderate.' You also included that those who are FOBS "come here and stay in Chinatown." I understand where you're coming from but you need to realize that these "FOBS" you are calling uneducated and uncivilized do not have the same cultural norms as Americans. So for you to call these "FOBS" uneducated, no manners, uncivilized, and inconsiderate, it's how you're describing the people of Asia.

Finally, you said that this show "opens the door for a lot of Chinese and Taiwanese Americans... and Koreans... Japanese...But mostly let's be serious here, there's a serious lack of representation among mainland Chinese and Taiwanese Americans in movies and films." You do realize that there's a serious lack for the entire Asian RACE in Hollywood, right? Not just "mainland Chinese and Taiwanese Americans." And in many times where Asians are represented in Hollywood, they actors cast are typically Chinese/Taiwanese. And if the character has an ethnicity of say, Vietnamese, they're still typically casted with Chinese/Taiwanese actors and actresses.

I understood where you guys were coming from, but you guys came off very offensive and very biased. I wish next time you guys will try to stop generalizing and stop making it obvious that your opinions are heavily biased.

As a Hmong person, I think this show is extremely unrelatable - the 'Asian' experience usually means the 'East Asian experience' - who is usually interested in assimilating to white culture and has some form of financial security - and never properly represents the Southeast Asian refugee (Vietnamese, Hmong, Cambodian, Lao - even Burmese (Karen) community. Personally I found Margaret Cho's All American Girl more relatable.

How can you guys comment on "this show isn't about a FOB family" when you guys don't even know what fob is? Uncivilized, uneducated, no manners? Wtf? That's your definition of fob? Fobs are often way more book smart and educated than those who grew up in the US. Uncivilized? What? That reeks of western ethnocentrism. Ok here it is- they tend to have accents, are most often than not very well educated, don't know much of western Pop culture, stick with their own social groups, and basically stick out on a social level as awkward because they're not too familiar with the nuances of western culture or language. And these days a lot of fobs don't have strong accents, follow western pop culture like religion, try to hook up with white people, and try to be more white than white people themselves. So there are many sub definitions and eras of fobdom. Then you have the semi fobs. You guys don't even have the tip of the iceberg.

The show is great.

Eddie Huang wrote this so what does this say if he makes his character less like able and a bit of a snot sometimes. He wrote his parents parts so its both the actors and the writing" which eddie did" that makes them this way.. This is a sitcom written for both asian and non asian audiences. If it is successful it will allow others to follow so maybe there will be more than 2 shows based on asian characters.

Did they actually say that an asian guy's writing about race is racist? Why don't these guys write a sitcom. I would think it would be like a dark korean horror movie.  An asian tiger mom floating through a wall into a darkened room to smack the kid for getting a B+ instead of an A. The father never gives hugs……………………
The stuff they critique is what makes a sitcom.

I don't like all of Huang's stuff but he is a pretty dynamic dude so credit to him. Oh and Constance Wu is hot.

I think your comments on what a FOB is characterized as is in accurate. You're perpetuating that the people that come here "fresh off the boat" are stupid and have no human interpersonal skills when typically many Asians, as with many immigrants, that arrive in America are here on a visa for work or school. This indicates that they are not unintelligent and have no manners. Calling someone a FOB is saying that they are in America but they have not actually assimilated to American culture. They display characteristics and actions that people who are Asian-American and more Americanized in general see as not of American cultural norm.
Using your definition of FOB in this video doesn't help your argument for the show. They may have lived here for many years and the kids have grown up in America but that doesn't mean that they or at least the parents are not fully assimilated into culture. They can be considered Fresh Off the Boat because of the fact that the mom doesn't understand the neighborhood women and has a hard time making friends, or that the dad is trying so hard to run a American Cowboy Restaurant because he believes that it is the best way to attract the white people. If you actually watch the show, pay attention to how many times they talk about the "white people". No, the father is not completely detached and emotionless and the grandma helps Eddie with his thug walks, that doesn't make them fully assimilated even if it doesn't make the fully fresh off the boat either.
This is really the only issue that I took offense to out of your video which I couldn't really sit through. If anything you just made a SUPER racist comment on how you see immigrants, people of your own race, background, and culture, and even your own family, and that is not at all cool.

I'm still a little reluctant to watch this show. Just from the previews I felt like it would be riddled with stereotypes. I'm not asian, but I love asian culture (hell, I just love culture in general) and I hate that in America we just lump all asians into one big pot and use them interchangeably or not at all. America is a melting pot in the sense that different races and cultures coexist and kind of intermingle, but at the same time America also doesn't seem to pay any attention to those cultures. At least not enough to thoroughly understand and represent them in the media. Of course this doesn't just apply to asians or asian actors. Latino and African American actors/actresses are frequently either ignored or typecast as well, and the list just goes on. But after seeing this review I may at least check out this show to see what the fuss is about. And yeah, it was probably commented on somewhere below, but this isn't the first asian american sitcom. All American Girl comes to mind, but that was quite a while ago. Also, as a p.s. in regard to one of your last comments. Personally, I think asian guys are extremely attractive, and a lot of the girls I know think the same way. Just because asian men aren't frequently sex symbols in the media doesn't mean us girls don't think you're incredibly sexy. Just saying. :)

1) This was the 2nd show on air starring an asian american family. the last one was All American Girl that was on air in the 90s, starring margaret cho. it lasted one season and was cancelled and it's been 11 years since.

2) I liked how straightforward they were about race in the show. it is based on eddie huang's memoir and he lived in the 90s in a community with very little asian people. it's not surprising he experienced race-sensitive problems and i'm happy abc chose to present at least some of his experiences in a way that didn't sugarcoat it too much.

3) it's a memoir! how unique do you want a coming of age story to get? its a genre for a reason! most follow a general premise and what makes this show unique is its viewpoint from a new character on tv, the asian-american first gen kid.

4) of course not all characters are relateable to everyone. i just wanted to point out that for me and a decent amount of my friends, one of our parents was the conservative, stick to our roots dictator. and the other one was the one who embraced the american culture. maybe not always completely, but at least in some things, if not most. i think you'd be hardpressed to find ANY immigrant asian parents who has not accepted at least one small part of american culture, be it food or music or clothes. To have two characters that represent each of these stereotypes for comedic value is all the better. you can find parts of your own parents in each of them.

5) just because you're close to your parents doesn't mean that you're not fresh off the boat! what makes you so adamant that if you are able to talk and joke with your parents, that means you're westernized? aren't you the one pushing the stereotypes now?

I do agree with some of the things you said, mostly near the end, about the show still trying to find its identity. although, i think the reason for that is because so many asian americans, really, haven't found their identity yet. so trying to have show portray something that's already so intangible is difficult. so i understand that's its still confused because we are watching the beginning of a show that will really help present and future asian americans find their voice, their culture, and their individual identity. It's also true that some of the writing didn't ring true, like asian americans threatening to sue. but this is one of the first shows on television starring asian americans. even the real eddie huang, who disliked the writing of the show in the beginning, stated that he understood the need for these jokes. fresh off the boat is introducing basically a culture that's unfamiliar to most of america. this is the first true portrayal of asian american life and struggle. its not always easy to get people to enjoy something foreign so the show needs to find a way to relate with the masses. all we can do is hope that this show will help open doors in the future for more portrayals of asian americans in the media so we can further educate about our culture.

i think the title "fresh off the boat" is meant to be somewhat ironic. the idea that the kids have been born and raised in the usa but are still treated like they don't have this intimate knowledge of the usa. like when the white mum said "you speak english very well!" and that they are still separated a lot from white families/people

I'm Asian, I'm Chinese and I love this series. Take it with a pinch of salt coz it is entertainment and not a documentary. Modern Family- cmon don't U think they are exaggerating stuff to make it funny? Ditto w Fresh Prince of Bel Air etc. These all portray CARICATURES of people.

I find that most of us Asians, regardless of where we have put down roots, have similar mothers. Lol. The mum in FOB has the best lines. Constance does such a great job.

Another similarity we share? We need to help Asian talents and Asian shows in Hollywood to have
more opportunities by showing them our support & watching shows like FOB. It was not easy to secure this opportunity to create a series starring Asian talents. Let's support it so that more opportunities can arise from it, then we can talk about creating better stories and characters. The priority is to show the suits that Asians have an audience.

They are way too harsh on the show! I thought it was really good and really funny. I thought all the actors/characters were really funny and I liked them a lot. I thought they did a good job of making it relatable but not feed too much into stereotypes and show a softer side. They said that it was feeding too much into stereotypes and then not enough? Make up your mind! Just because your family was not exactly like that doesn't mean no one has a family like that. I know for a fact that there are a lot of Asian American kids that relate or really like African American culture. Also you have to remember that this was in the 90s and people were even more ignorant about other cultures then they are now and the whole school dynamic makes a lot of sense. I think that they are feeding into stereotypes a lot more than the show is. They are basically saying that all Asian parent have to be mean all the time and that they are not allowed to communicate or relate with their kids. STOP PUSHING YOUR PROBLEMS ONTO THE SHOW! The only thing I agree on is the title of the show is not my favorite. Btw this show is supposed to be based on a real family. That is just my opinion.

It's a comedy sitcom, not a documentary. Complaining about this not being realistic makes about as much sense as complaining about The Office not being realistic ("in a real office, everyone would be stressed out and miserable"). I love the show. Regarding the main kid, it's important to note that this is a semi-autobiographical account of Eddie Huang's childhood. He was majorly influenced by hip hop and black culture, so that's why it's part of the show, even if most Asian-Americans can't relate to it. I think it's a nice aspect because it allows black culture to also be a part of the show, instead of just whites and Asians.

I am not sure where you get your definition of FOB. But FOB never means uneducated, uncivilized and none of that negative terms that you have used. It is great that you are voicing out for Asian Americans, but I do think that you need to be careful with what you put out to the world because people that are unfamiliar with the culture will think the way you do. FOB is really just a term that describes those that have just arrived in the country. It doesn't mean they are uncivilized or uneducated, it really just means that they are unfamiliar with the western culture, or they are choosing to live the way they were used to living when back in their country. Please do not put any more judgements on immigrants, they are trying hard in a new country and they are brave.

FOB is based loosely on Eddie Huang's life, so you can't expect the show to be a representation of all Taiwanese American families. While most Asian fobs have thicker accents, it wouldn't be a good idea to have stronger accents on the show. Not only would you need subtitles, but there would be so many people trying to mimic the accent. Every fob family is different. My dad is fresh off the boat and he happens to know English and Spanish, so every Asian's family will differ.

I am pretty ambiguous about the "happy its there" argument, because over the last years or so I saw that tons of times used as an excuse for shitty writing and introducing one stereotype after the other. I saw it on Glee, on The Vampire Diaries, on Teen Wolf and of course the god awful Cassandra Clare books. All of these dealt in next to nothing but stereotypes, either right from the start like Glee and the Clare books or they introduced more and more over time like The Vampire Diaries and Teen Wolf. In all cases I was "I am a whiter than white gay guy from Berlin and I would have been able to do that better," If I weren't such a shitty writer.

I hate Eddie Huang because he does not represent a true Asian kid. An Asian kid does not straight away tend to hip hop, especially with Asian parents. Eddie Huang does not show that Asian kids respect their parents. Also no bloody Asian kid talks like a black. I mean sure we say yo and wassup, but we don't fully assimilate into the cultural. I felt Eddie was trying to represent a more black-hip-hop culture then an Asian one, which is about  being studious, obedient, shy, not able to fit in due to lack of social skills, or because of plain racism. Eddie Huang does not represent us Asian kids at all. The only thing he has in common with us Asians, is suffering from racism. He only suffers racism nothing else. He does not know the true life of an Asian Kid.

The Parents in the Show are kinda spot on, especially the Tiger mom. The dad not so much. If being raised by a tiger mom like Jessica Huang , no kid in their right mind rebels the way Eddie Huang does. No Asian kid in existent would rebel against Jessica Huang.

@got2many I just see a lot of dishonesty in Asians when they want to play both-sides or have seperate groups for their "asian stuff" and the "other group" for mainsteam, social, or "black" stuff. Its like appropriation. But I respect Eddie for being real and honest. A lot of Asians dont want to admit they like anything seen as "Black" due to the social stigma, and they don't know how to differenciate from it. Alot of Asians are like Eddie but they'll never admit it to retain their percieved superiority.
got2many
got2many - 9 years ago
@Black Tornado doesn't every race do that? I don't care what race you are or gender. we all try to "fit" in. nobody wants to be the odd guy out. everyone adopts the latest trend, whether it be music, fashion, food, new slang word, etc. people in general get into something that appeals to them.  also that "cultural appropriation" term is a cop-out. there is absolutely nothing wrong with getting into a certain genre like hip hop or rock and want to dress in that certain style or use that certain lingo. like you said that is how he grew up and a lot of people adopt their attitude and fashion from environment. hanging around a certain group or area since childhood will grow on you and mold you.  that is who he is. so in a sense people like eddie huang are genuine and being themselves and don't give a crap what other's think.

Those other "varieties" of Asian Americans you claim are equally defaultable aren't genuine as stand alones though, those are the ones that just adopted western media culture and pretend they are what they aren't just to fit into the crowd. A lot of it just ends up as cultural apropriation but thats how he grew up and valid for a single perspective.

Sorry that Eddie Huang isn't your cookie cutter racist stereotype of a "true asian" - but whether you wanna believe it or not HE IS REALLY ASIAN.

He never meant to represent all Asians, because the entire problem with western media has been that they try to represent all Asians with really shallow characters who are all basically the same. Eddie is just a person. Yeah he's Asian and that's a huge part of his identity but it does not define every aspect of who he is. Some Asians are into Hip Hop like Eddie, or like Jay Park and G-Dragon. Some Asians are shy and studious, like you, and some are not, like me.

America has seen enough of the "boring, shy, socially awkward but super book-smart Asian" with just about every background Asian character in movies and shows. Its time to show that Asians come in a much wider variety than just that. This show is just one of the (hopefully) many that will come and help the world understand what it means to be Asian American. As that happens, maybe we can also have the shy smart Asian as the main character of another show.

I'm sorry, but I believe you gotta deconstruct your view on Asians ASAP. I mean, come on, I'm half Chinese, I know all about being "studious, obedient, shy, not able to fit in due to lack of social skills" as a kid, but I'm glad to say that I definitely broke out of this mold. I like learning a lot more than studying, my areas of study are the humanities and arts (so no lawyer, doctor or engineer here) and I may be shy, but I know how to overcome it and fit in.

Also, isn't Eddie Huang representing Eddie Huang? Ultimately the show isn't about an Asian family, it's about Eddie Huang's family - even if it has been rewritten to fit ABC's agenda.

Jeremy's parents are different. They understood Jeremy's great skill and potential. Not all Asian parents are the same. There might be a lot of those that are strict but there are a few who are not as strict.

Jeremy's parents are one of those that balanced being strict and supportive.
Richard Y
Richard Y - 9 years ago
@Joseph Ng Jeremy's parents also took a lot of criticism from their Chinese family friends from church and Chinese school for letting him continuously play basketball without seriously pursuing a more "traditional" career too.  Most Asian parents from what I see would be resistant to allow their kids to do this.
Joseph Ng
Joseph Ng - 9 years ago
I watched Jeremy's biography and his parents were supportive but also they had some restrictions like God is First, School is Second, and, Basketball is Third. From what I watched he was obedient and studious. He also so happened to be awesome at basketball. His parents were supportive and new he had great skill and potential to be a Basketball Player.
Richard Y
Richard Y - 9 years ago
@Joseph Ng You do understand that Eddie's not the only child in the Huang family on this show, right?  Even though Eddie might be the rebellious kid and the "black sheep" of the family, Emery and Evan are ones that can be relatable.

By your logic then, Jeremy Lin is not an "accurate" representation of Asian kids because his parents allowed him to pursue his dream to play basketball rather than go the traditional route of being a doctor, lawyer, or engineer.
Joseph Ng
Joseph Ng - 9 years ago
Fine, I understand this to be a comedy. I am just concern because he paints a picture of us Asians that is not very accurate. No hard feelings.
Matt Schwartz
Matt Schwartz - 9 years ago
@Joseph Ng He represents himself. No one can represent anyone else. Asians are not all identical sheep who think and act the same. His life is just as true as yours. It's true that he's not ordinary; he never wanted to be. Eddie Huang's character isn't necessarily supposed to be "relatable"; Eddie would rather his character be inspiring for helping "ordinary" Asians to "break out of the mold" and forge their own original paths instead of being like everyone else.

Eddie's character isn't supposed to be a noble, wise hero. It's obvious that he's a flawed character who has room for personal development. Nothing wrong with that. There's nothing funny about perfect, respectful robots who have no sense of individualism.

Reality isn't funny. This isn't reality. No one's claiming it is. It's a comedy sitcom. Lighten up and laugh a little.
Joseph Ng
Joseph Ng - 9 years ago
My point is he does not represent the Asian Kids. Not that I hate blacks or I think Asians are superior. I mean he is not showing the true life of an Asian kid. Believe me when I say that Asians are shy, quite studious, and obedient. Those are traits that are engraved in a lot of Asian kids. They are not stereotypes.

There are not a lot of Asian Kids that can relate to Eddie Huang. For instance, being extremely rebellious and demanding money from parents. There is no way an Asian parent will accept this kind of attitude from an Asian kid. The one slight sign of being disrespectful is a one way ticket to being caned till you can't sit.

I remember just asking for anything, I got denied and when I complained I was punished because I should have acted better and not disrespectful.

Throughout the entire show practically, Eddie Huang could act as rebellious as he wanted and he would not get punished gravely. That my friend is all bullshit.  No Asian kid acts rebellious and gets away with it.
Matt Schwartz
Matt Schwartz - 9 years ago
Stop being a cultural supremacist. Hating someone for embracing another race's culture is quite frankly racist. Being Asian is NOT about being "studious, obedient, shy, not able to fit in due to lack of social skills"; those are stereotypes that Eddie Huang consciously chose to break away from. Anyway, Eddie Huang is just as Asian as you are.

When I watch the show, I feel like I could relate to Eddie very well. I did deal with the same issues he had at school, and studying instead of going outside with my friends. Even when i got into fights, parents would back me up in the principles office. But when we would get home i would get beat(common they cant show parents beating the kids on tv).

When people say white people , why always American, English, or Canadian? why not Russian, Greek, or Swedish?
My point is, stop whining about Asians being lumped into one thing when white people are lumped together even faster and more often than Asians. If I pointed to someone whom was Asian, many people ask are they Chinese or something else? If pointed to a European, people look at me and are like "so what? it's just another white person". At least many people are interested in your cultures and what to be respectful. When non-whites encounter a white European they don't give 2 fucks about their culture.

@Aung Lin well, they typically mean East Asians when some non-Asian person uses the word "Asian". However people tend to use those two words, Chinese and Asian interchangeably. They are not specifically referring to the actual Chinese people who are from mainland China or whatever. I'm Korean and ppl say things like "oh she's Chinese", and that really just basically means, "she's Asian" Because the truth is, they don't really care much about different Asian nationalities and they are just referring any East Asian as Chinese.

I say mostly because the amount of chinese people in the world is a lot, thus accounting for the largest percentage of ethnicity in the Asian region, and presumably largest ethnicity of the Asian immigrants. Thus most common to be seen, or associated by? China makes a huge part of Asia, for centuries people think China as Asia. Hell my friend from Europe still think Asia is mostly China. So yeah. It's a large country with huge population and large ethnic group all over the world compare to others. With the numbers it's almost certain that when you see Asians most of the time they're Chinese. And from there people ended up generalizing.

@filthyswit OTGW has some fair shares of interesting clips about Chinese culture.  But I do agree with you that what bothers me is when they do non-Chinese Asian episodes (such as talking about K-Pop or Japanese samurai) while continuing calling their channel "Off the Great Wall".  It's not only an inaccurate reflection of their video clips, but it's a bit insulting (whether intentional or not) to lump everything about Asian material on a "Chinese" channel, as if all things Asian revolve around China.

What I hated were the packing boxes with 2nd grade penmanship and the plastic dinnerware used. If they are truly FOBs, the chinese writing is not reality unless the youngest son wrote those chinese characters. If they aren't FOBs, then the boxes would be labeled in English. Both all boxes were bilingual just to show this is a chinese family's belongings. And the plastic dinnerware? OMG. Honeys, you are saying that asian guys are the least desirable???? You know yourself that there is a giant catalogue of desirable asian men. It's hollywood who made them the least desirable by using goofy, nerdy or negative characters in their movies, by desexualizing asian men. But you've forgotten the first Hollywood sex symbol: Sessue Hayakawa! I believe that the european american men even felt threathened by his handsomeness, whereafter the desexualization of asian men started.

I was very confused on your assessment. You either want a happy ending like modern family in every episode or you want the tough asian discipline and the non white man stuck in an asian dad body characterization... I am a non asian, and someone said this in the other comments, if it were explicitly focused on generalizations of asians.. i would find it a turn off because for me as a non asian I can't tell whether the Show is capitalizing on false assumptions. I am Nigerian and there are very similar disciplines between us and asians, but for my TV viewing pleasures I wouldn't want to see all the yelling and coldness I got from my upbringing on TV ("Tiger mom) because there's a fine line of that being a caricature. This is my favorite show on TV that took me 2 weeks to get into because the title of the show was such a turn off.

The title of this show really fits it quite well. As a Chinese-American with parents from Taiwan, I knew the term ABC (American Born Chinese) and FOB (Fresh Off the Boat) early-on in life. And in knowing that, the title fits perfectly to reflect the lifestyle of being Chinese-American and growing up with parents who are Fresh Off the Boat. The show would NOT work if it presented an ENTIRELY FOB family. I relate to this first-gen Chinese-American child providing my perspective of what it was like growing up in a 93% white suburb. It provides both the parents FOB perspective and what it was like for us, their children to grow up with clashing cultures (home vs. society). Also, I don't know about you but my dad is very much like Randall Park portrays. My mom is extreme tiger-mom and my dad is definitely the parent that is the more relaxed one and has no control over our tiger mother. As I have learned growing up there are different Chinese-American family dynamics. Some of my friends have really well-assimilated parents- no tiger moms, relaxed dad, whole package - then there are those as portrayed here where the mother is overbearing, and then in my experience it's been rare (or just so unknown to me because I had the former) but I know it's out there the family is more patriarchal. Judging a show because your family doesn't EXACTLY match their dynamic is not the point of the show. It's giving a fresh and somewhat-realistic perspective and view into the Asian-American family, being relatable but also very much aware of what keeps it on TV. If they realistically showed how some Asian parents disciplined their children, you know it'd start some 50 shades of grey domestic abuse controversy. They made tiger-mom TV-friendly. The show is doing its best in giving a fresh and somewhat-realistic perspective and view into the Asian-American family, being relatable but also very much aware of what keeps it on TV and who its audience is. I love the show and hope it keeps up the good work.

I'm Chinese American. I never knew until I was grown up that Asian Parents don't normally show affection towards their kids. This is because my dad would always give me a hug and a kiss on my head at bed time. Then, he will say he loves me very much on daily bases. Then, I will say it back to him. So, my dad didn't fit the normal Asian dad stereotype. Thank goodness! So, when I have kids, I will do the same for my kids. It just doesn't sound right to not say I love you, if you love them. lol

Now on the other hand, my mom didn't show me one bit of affection. When I was little or grown up. I asked her once why she never hug me and she said because Chinese people don't that! But, I told her dad does it all the time, and she said, well I don't! So that was that, I guess.

In the end, my dad did love the whole thing about being an American and we would do all that stuff. Like celebrating the holidays, Thanksgiving and Christmas and more. We would go out and watch games. Now this doesn't mean he forgot how to be Chinese, nope. We did that stuff too. He just wanted us to do it all because well we're Americans!

Hey. I really like this video and agreed with most of your observations. I found that a lot of your complaints can be applied to the new show Blackish on ABC. You guys know that the show is loosely based off of Eddie Huang's life right? His memoir is called Fresh Off the Boat and that's where the title comes from. I feel like the way you guys are treating this show to be a drama/documentary but at the end of the day it's a comedy. Because it's a comedy, things are exaggerated greatly and nothing is meant to be taken 100% seriously.

Personally, I think your own experiences are skewing your outlook on this show. You mention the part about Eddie getting in trouble at school and 'No Asian parent would ever be on the kid's side' is a pretty ridiculous generalization because its almost like you're saying Asians have no heart or a brain to discern whats ok and whats not. For me at least, my parents have stood up for me plenty of times in these kinds of matters. I don't know if you had heartless parents or something but when my parents found out I was being picked on for being Chinese, they flipped their wigs and screamed at the school.

A show with real FOB family in the US and can't assimilate... I believe that's A Native of Beijing in New York and it's not a American show, cause that's not something American people want to watch.

As for parents defending kid in principal's office scene in FOB. Well, that actually happened to me (not as dramatically though) Basically I was bullied at school, and I settled it with a pretty bad fight during recess with broken noses (how this sort of thing is normally resolved in China) that landed me in the principal's office. I was not disciplined at home (though I did have to go to detention), but was told this is not how things are settled in America, but I should defend myself when being bullied.

In all honesty it seems as if you guys are missing the fact that the show is based off of Eddie Huang's life and book and not that of a typical fob-y Asian family. Yes, the producers have taken many liberties in many areas, but at the end of the day the show is about Eddie, and the issues surrounding fob life are secondary.

I'm a first gen Chinese-Canadian, a real FOB if you will, and I love the show!  When I was 9, I immigrated from Mainland China to a part of Ontario with lots of hip hop influence (and lots of southeast Asians but no Chinese) and went through much of what Eddie went through.  I remember feeling self conscious re: my rice lunch and got my dad to switch to sandwiches.  I also remember my parents trying to fit into our white and Hispanic neighbourhood.  Btw, although my parents are very strict and I've received my share of beatings, I still gave them plenty of sass so I don't think every Asian kid was terrified of their parents.  I also was fortunate to have pretty loving parents (definitely did not hear any I love yous until this year - I'm 29 now) much like Eddie's.  Also, this show is based on Eddie Huang's book Fresh Off the Boat.

Also, things that go on in a Chinese family probably doesn't translate well let alone in a comedic fashion in a western society. The last time there was an influx of Asian people on TV was in 2010 where they had Outsource and Hawaii Five O. That was the season of Asians. I don't see it as a stepping stone for more Asian people to be on TV. Hollywood thinks Asians are represented if you put one or two tokens in a TV show or in the movies. Shows like FOB come once every 10 year to test the water and then if it doesn't work out, Hollywood wait for another decade to roll around to test the water again.

I think Fresh Off the Boat is very fitting to the show.  Indeed their situation is not fresh off the boat, but it is trying to say that their immigrant status sticks with them and is part of their American experience.  No matter how they assimilate, it is obvious that they are foreign and thus, fresh off the boat.
Neela
Neela - 9 years ago
I think I kind of understand a reason for the title. A lot of people in the show - the ladies in the neighborhood - treat the family as if they are fresh off the boat when, seriously, they moved from D.C. For example, in the potluck episode where Constance Wu's character takes the microphone, one of the ladies 'clarifies' that it's 'normal' in Taiwanese culture despite clearly knowing nothing of any Asian culture and even less about Constance Wu's character. Like you said, the characters are Westernized. However, a lot of people in their new community really refuse to recognize that. Instead, there have been multiple instances of them being treated as if they are 'fresh off the boat'. So, the title might be misleading, but I think it is there to point out how the family is being treated rather than how the family acts. That's just a hypothesis, though.

I disagree with you guys that this is going to change anything for asian actors trying to get into American TV.

TV channels seem to try "alternative" comedies from time to time hoping that it will be popular due to the novelty. For black folks, big hits like The Cosby Show and Sanford and Son relied on big name black comics. The lesser known comedies that were on nobody remembers. Gay community got Will and Grace. All white people, hetero-crazy white woman, main gay guy is non-flaming, and the flaming gay guy is the comedy relief for every episode via stereotypical "funny gay" behaviour. I can't even think of a big Latino hit. George Lopez's show was like all those other black shows that just never broke out. It's ironic to me that Hollywood seems so narrow-minded(and bigoted) with its decision making, but it's very obvious that the only color they're really interested in is "Green".

I'll just keep watching subbed Korean dramas on cable in the meantime. Wish we could get more Chinese and Japanese tv.

Haven't read the book or seen the show. The title FOTB was taken from  Eddie Huang's book based on his life.

Read in the paper that the author wished the show had retained more of his book...

Info from Wiki:
Margaret Cho had a television show (All American Girl, 1994), about how she didn't want to obey her traditional Korean parents,
Mr. T and Tina, 1976, is credited as being America's first television show to feature an Asian (in this case, actor and character - Japanese) in the leading role Pat Morita  played Taro Takahashi,  an inventor who lives with free-spirited American Tina Kelly.

Both shows were short lived.

i dont know much about Asian culture but i think that if the show was a true reflection of how you guys describes an Asian family it would not be on the air. By this i mean, other races wont get it, and the ratings will not be high enough to keep it on the air. I get it, we want things on tv to truly reflect us, but realistically would people tune in to see a stereotypical asian family's life. Family matters didnt reflect my family, and neither did everybody hates chris. but people watched it because it was entertaining, and not because it was a reflection of real life.

My dad is color washed and is understanding and my mom is not strict as the mom from the show but my mom is cheap and did that Chinese Learning did to me when I was little. I like the show because it really relates to my family. The parents relates to my parents. I think it's a show to be watched with a family mainly Asian parents to get to relate and reflect onto themselves.

I disagree with their comments that the show is too stereotypical.  If you're not going to have Asians doing Asian things then they're just white or non-racial.  And so why even bother making the family Asian?  Just have another white family.  Those Asians that don't want to see Asians being stereotypical or acting Asian, are just running from their own culture and are ashamed to be seen as an Asian, because they're so desperately trying to fit into white society and be white.

Good video. Nice to see some valid critical response to the show, good reviews or not. I agree for the most part, but I do think one of the scenes with Eddie and the black kid was a direct adaption from the autobiography. I also find it funny that my grandpa seems to really like Eddie, despite being an Asian parents himself. I feel a little bad for Eddie Huang, since there's quite a lot of changes that needed to be done to appeal to the greater American audience an this is his biography, but if the show does well, that would give them more opportunity to take the risks to put what he wanted in the show.

In an interview with Constance Wu, she said this show (FOB) isn't representing all Asian families. When you watch Tina Fey, you don't immediately think all white people act like that.

Because Asians have very limited type of roles, I guess. We sort of generalised it and think about how it relates to our family. No, we don't have a dad like that. No, we didn't have 'the talk', etc.

But this show isn't trying to do that. It's not trying to stereotype or generalise Asians. ( I know the jokes and stuff are stereotyped but it was mixing in with culture. )

Like when you watch a white family on TV, you don't think. Oh my family doesn't do that. Or my friend's mum isn't like that. Why should we think the same when watching an Asian family on TV?

I think you guys are all missing the point.  The show's on ABC!!!!.....NOT HBO or SHOWTIME!!!  If FOB was on HBO or SHOWTIME, it could be as edgy and risque and odd and weird humor as it wants to be.  But it's on ABC!!! ABC is owned by DISNEY!!!!  Meaning, EVERY FAMILY SIT-COM has to be clean cut and safe and non-controverisal.  It doesn't matter if the show is about a black family or a Latino family or an Asian family, if it's on ABC/DISNEY, the show has to be wholesome with GOOD "AMERICAN" FAMILY VALUES.

This is why the Randall Park character is American-style (rather than Asian style parenting where father tells mother he's disappointed in you-the child, and then mother relays the message to you, instead of him talking to you directly).  ABC just wants to show an American family who happens to be Asian with tiny little quirks, that's all, so that any advertiser like Glade cleaning products and Applebee's can sponsor it.  Network family sit-com is all about safe clean cut shows where 9 year old children can watch with their mom and dads.  And the odd character(s) trying to fit in is a normal plot-line for TV, like Malcom in the Middle or The New Adventures of Old Christine. I hope you guys understand why the Fresh off the Boat is the way it is......   :)

P.S.  "The Goldbergs" on ABC is a family sit-com about a Jewish family with a main character as a child living in the 80's and voice-over by the adult version of the child.  Same premise as Everybody Hates Chris.  And Fresh off the Boat.  ABC likes formulaic "safe" shows.  Somebody just need put up the money and make a show on HBO or Showtime or Netflix about the Asian-American or Asian-Australian or Asian-Canadian or Asian-British experience, that's all.

+Enna M You're right.  Sounds like the standard sitcom format.  It's been like that forever.  I remember watching "Leave It To Beaver", and it was the same format back then.  It's been done over and over again.  Nothing new.  If I had cable, I probably watch it just to see how an "Asian" family on TV looks; plus, it would be nice to see other cultures depicted on TV by a major network.

LOL!  I don't remember what commercials were shown but I know McDonald's has done an excellent superb job advertising to Asian folks.  There's a McDonald's commercial in every Asian language in the United States, at least here in California on TV and radio (foreign language stations).  The show Fresh off the Boat is not that funny, tho.  Very middle of road and bland like this:  child goes to school and sees that his classmates has something that he doesn't. So he wants it and does something he's not supposed to do to get it.  But he gets in trouble with the principal or the law, and his parents talk to him and they hug and lesson learned.  Kind of boring and normal, which means no one gets offended, which means every demographic can watch it.  And while everyone from gay republicans to single mothers to Russian immigrants is watching it, Lay's Potato Chips or Taco Bell comes out with a commercial announcing a new flavor.  Then everybody who's been watching the Fresh off the Boat TV show, goes "ooh, that looks good, i want to eat that" and then they buy it.  This is how network family sit-com works.
onyxspirals
onyxspirals - 9 years ago
Good point about the advertising dollars.  I haven't watched the show, but, I'm wondering if the commercials that are shown during that time slot actually have Asian people in them.  If not, McDonald's, Coke, and whoever owns Tide will fill the airtime.
