Did you ever get around to riding the Show Pony? I'm just curious how the two compared. Also any fin recommendations/preferences for either board?

Surfed twice in waist high wind swell and had a real blast, went this over the bottom feeder and BP/SP etc etc. For me it turns real well and could do all the standard snaps etc on crappy waves with no dramas. I am about 190lbs and the 5'4 is perfect I recon, if I was in better shape would go slightly smaller.

I currently have a 5'9 CI New Flyer and the thing shreds in all conditions! im about 80kgs and the volume is perfect for me. You should look into it for sure!

These are all great boards but, given your description, the Average Joe is a great call for you. It's easy to surf and fun in tiny waves - I think you will enjoy it!

6'0 must have a volume of 48 liters? i'd have trouble turning that as well. i'm 1,95 m/ 6'4, weigh about 100kg in my wintergear and my 5'9 with 40 liters of volume still goes like a rocket and turns tight as well. even in the weaker wind swells i surf over here in the north sea.
if you are considering this board: it's a cool board for smaller waves but indeed holds suprisingly well in headhigh surf. just get the right size and volume for your weight.(and skills)
Yes, it is probably a touch too big. If available, I would have opted for the 5'10 at 43.2L's but that may have been a touch too small for me for a groveler. I am 105kg's in my birthday suit (on a good day) and, for a groveler style board intended for tiny, weak waves, I need that much beef just to get up and going.
Regardless, I think I would have trouble digging that thick, wide tail into the wave face. I've had other grovelers (5'10 Firewire Sweet Potato, 6'1 CI Average Joe, 6'0 Lost Bottom Feeder) at mid-to-high 40L's of volume and had no trouble turning them hard.

Check this out. JS are bringing out the new Pier Pony - The "Show Pony". The volume has been re-distributed and it is has a thinner diamond tail. Built for speed and peformance. Not sure if the less volume will take away the planing speed of the PP but it will certainly make it more easier to throw around on and above the lip. They say "the Show Pony is a thoroughbred Pier Pony" ..I was looking to get another Tiny Groveller, like a Cab Sav. Probably not now. I reckon this will be the one. I'll wait around.

Good Board for 0.5 - 2 feet. Takes a few surfs to get used to as it was so small length wise. I have the 4'10" and am 5'7 62kg. Good planing speed and easy to turn. It seems to work better in fuller cleaner waves which break out the back then you can cruise and cutback all the way to the shoreline. On suckier or even mushier heavier sections it might struggle to fit in the pocket on take off. You may even slide a bit if the wave is steep and you are using your backfoot too much, This will cause you to lose speed on take off, but you will regain that speed once you are on the face going across the wave. It is flat like a ironing board and sometimes you will bury the nose after a critical manoeuvre. It cutbacks well and can get above the lip when required. I use a quad setup and have rode it up to 5 feet. I give it 4 stars.
I would like to buy a surfboard for small waves, but I want a fast surfboard which could give me an easy paddle. I am between JS - Pier Pony, Rust - TDwart and Lost - Uber Plank. Could you help me?
All three of these boards are intended to paddle well and generate speed in small surf. I class the Pier Pony as a groveler, which is intended for the tiniest, weakest of conditions (~waist high and smaller) while the other two are for a broader wave range (~waist to head high).

How did you find the Pier Pony vs the Dropped Swallow in terms of speed and as a small to tiny wave board. I have the 4'10 PP and like it, but was thinking how it compares the the Drop Swallow which seems to have a heap more nose rocker and looks more like a traditional board.
The Pier Pony, as a groveler, is the go when the surf is tiny and weak; it excels at the catching waves and generating speed in the knee to waist high range but it's extremely wide outline makes it difficult to turn.
As you said, the Dropped Swallow has a more traditional outline and I found it more lively and manoeuvrable but it worked best for me in shoulder to head high, flatter faced beach breaks. Still, it is a small to medium size wave board and doesn't have much rocker.
