Trip Forman reviews the ...Lost RV in the REAL boardloft. Find out more about the ..Lost RV here: http://www.realwatersports.com/news/lost-rv-surfboard-review/ Here's how the RV compares to other boards in the domesticated series: -Couch Potato : Ultimate groveler with wide open sweet spot. Milk the smallest waves with the ability to turn hard or trim. - Bottom Feeder : Power groveler for more performance based surfers who like a locked in stance and snappier turns. This one surfs the most like a performance shortboard or hybrid, with the easiest transition back and forth to it. - LayZboy : The Swiss Army Knife of surfboards with incredible single board range. Wide open sweet spot with great turning, carves and trim. Easily works from thigh high up to overhead surf. - RV : A more maneuverable domesticated shape for those that seek even harder turns and snaps, late drops and warp-9 high speed turns. You loose the rock bottom low end but you gain maneuverability and a touch more control at top speed plus retail the ability to trim when needed.

Love this shape but my RV is so so soft, every time i take it out i pretty much get some ding or something, i have taken it into the shop for fix so many times.

6 years before this i have only ever had to take a board into the shop once .

Anyone else have this problem ???

Matt, even if you are not traveling long distances it is wise to keep your board in a day use bag. Most of my dings definitely happened out of the water.

yeah i dont know if i have just gotten a one off bad egg in the batch, but i haven't even gotten it to the stage i need to get it in the board bag/travel yet. just surfing it, it cracks and dings so easy. never had anything like it before.

Hey Matt, Lost Uses two layers of 4oz cloth on the deck as their standard glassing. This is in an effort to keep the board light weight, and riding as good as possible. You can have Lost boards custom shaped with stronger glassing if you'd like to add durability but also weight. A good board bag goes a long way as well. Best of luck with the repairs, hope you score some great waves soon - Ashlon Durham

Hey Team ( or anyone else)
Just got the RV, liking it - just a bit of a curiosity question here.

It is so incredibly responsive, little pressure on that back foot and this thing just pivots and carves tight (I thought it would be opposite considering its thicker/wider than my last board)

Is this characteristics of this board/model ? or could it be because i'm riding it with quads ?

(not that it's a bad thing at all, its good - I was just surprised is all)

+Matt Duncan - glad you're loving the board. This is exactly what this design is supposed to do, transition from rail-to-rail with ease and surf progressively despite its domesticated outline. This isn't limited to just the quad fin setup so you'll find the board is still nimble using thruster or 2+1. Domesticated bliss at its finest! Stay Stoked! -Chris Stellato +real watersports

Hey, planning on moving from my 8'4 Bic beginner board to something more intermediate. I'm 6'3 200lbs. Definitely a novice, just starting to be able to turn in on bigger waves. What size RV would be best suited for a beginner of my size and the sloppy New England surf. Cheers.

+Derek Kerins thanks for your question. You should be looking in the neighborhood of 46L volume on this board, which would put you on a 6'2" or 6'3" RV. Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato +real watersports

Could you list the lost mahem grovellers from beginner to more advanced?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+Ryan The Rock Thanks for your question. The differences in the surfboards aren't exactly progressions in skill levels... each board's design works in different types of waves and provides a different feel on the wave. Each design is also available in a wide range of sizes and constructions. There are lots of combinations of board/surfer that will produce great results, and in the end it just comes down to finding a good match for your situation. Any groveler board, including the RV, can be sized to match your skill level, from beginner to advanced, with Beginners liking a bit more volume in their boards to make paddling and standing easier. Hope this helps! -Chris Stellato +real watersports

hey I'm gonna start surfing for the first time soon and I want to know what lost board do you recommend for a beginner?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 8 years ago
+Juan Martinez Thanks for your question. Anything that is stable and has enough float for your body weight is a great choice. RV has been very popular with beginners as well as puddle jumper and layzboy.

If you'd like to send your weight and where you'll be surfing most often, we can recommend a specific board.

For your first 1-3 surf sessions, a foam surfboard might be a good idea, but if you're buying a surfboard to own you should purchase a normal "hard" surfboard. Any construction will work for you, including Pu/Poly, LibTech, EPS/Epoxy, C3 and more.

I know this is a bit older now, but just saw this great review.  I'm an intermediate surfer who's primarily looking for a board to surf every day around NYC.  Apart from storm swells, our waves are pretty gutless, choppy, and knee-chest high.  I'm trying to decide between the RV and the couch potato - do you think one would be better than the other?
If the RV would work here, I think I'd go for that over the couch potato, since it sounds like the RV might work in better waves too.  That way I'd be able to bring it on the occasional surf trip to PR or central america too.

Anyway, would appreciate your thoughts.  Thanks!

@skippyleif You're right on the money by saying that the RV has much more range into better waves. The CP is a dedicated groveler so wouldn't give you the versatility you want. Go with the RV to surf anything from ankle-high slop to head high. If you think you'll be spending a lot of time in over-head, barreling waves, you can look at the Stretch RV that has a little more high-end capabilities than the standard RV.

Hi! i'm from Italy, i'm 5'7" for 150 lbs. My surfing level is intermediate, my board now is a minimal 7.6 i never used a shortboard! this is a good board for me? What are the difference between this board and the averege joe or the dwart?
i usually surf in Italy and somtimes in Portugal. Thanks!

@REAL Watersports Thank you so much! now i have all the information to choose my new board!

@AndryBP1987 The RV is a great "first shortboard" for people transitioning down from longer boards.  At 150lbs and first time shortboard, you should look at boards in the 32-34 liter range for your "daily driver" (board you ride most days).  I recommend a 5'8" RV for your shortboard, or go a little bigger with a 5'10"+ for an even easier transition off the 7'6" board.

RV: http://www.realwatersports.com/surfing/surfboards/lost/rv

The RV, Average Joe, and Dwart are all similar shapes.  They are all designed to do well in small waves but have range into bigger surf.  In my opinion, to see the differences look at the nose and tail: The tighter noses and tails do better when the surf gets bigger and worse when the surf gets smaller.  I would say Average Joe has the widest nose, RV is a bit more pulled in in the nose and tail, and Dwart is most pulled in nose/tail.
Hope this helps!

@Liam McCosh Thanks for the question.  An RV would be a great next-step board for you.  It is an easy board to paddle and surf that can still crank some turns and perform on the wave.  For your weight and skill level, you should look at boards around 40-44 liters.  This puts you on a 6'0" or 6'1" RV in the stock dimensions.  Hope this helps!

Hi, I'm about 6 foot 2 inches and 100 kg. Looking for a 'next step' board to progress from beginner / intermediate skill level upwards. Do you think the Rv would be suitable. I'm surfing anything from just over head height to mush. Thanks :)

Hi, What to do? A lazy Boy or the RV .... I'am surfing the NorthSea in The Netherlands and looking for a responsive weak/ small wave board... I try to compare the boards but I can't make a choice .. my shortboard is a firewire quadraflex 6,4 34ltrs and I'am 186cm 80kg ..

RV will be more "responsive" overall for sure. They both paddle well but the Layzboy glides a little better. Shoot us a message: realpro@realwatersports.com or you can live chat with one of our REAL Pros for more info: realwatersports.com Thanks @Gerhard Messink

G;day Trip, you guys do good reviews, keep up the good work.
Last 8 months or so I have had a 5'6" Bottom Feeder (FYI I am 5'8" and 72kg (160pounds?) for the ankle to chest high waves we get mostly here on the Sunshine coast Qld Aus. After trialling quite a few set ups I use FCS MR Quads.
i love the BFand surf it 80% of the time. I sometimes wish the tail was a little narrower. So I think this RV with the winged tail will be brilliant when its time to trade this one in. As long as they kept a rolled or V bottom for side to side transition it should be fantastic.

What would be the "step up" board in the domesticated series? Something designed for shoulder high waves to a couple feet overhead? I was thinking a customer round tail LazyBoy but would a custom RV be better or just the stock RV? I already have a Couch Potato.

@Kelley Hendrickson - You could go for a custom or choose another board that is designed for just that purpose. Check out the weekend warrior or the V2 shortboard. Lost Weekend Warrior: Exposed!. What fins would you recommend for someone surfing this board who weighs 140 pounds with fcs boxes?
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 9 years ago
@90sideways The RV likes to be ridden with larger fins. Since you are on the lighter side we would recommend a medium sized FCS fin (as opposed to a small size for a normal thruster) with a decent amount of rake (not a vertical fin like the Kelly Slater, or similar). The board also really likes to have a 5-fin set up in bumpy or fast surfing conditions to keep the tail locked in a little better. For this you can use the FCS Nubster.

Hi, would you recommend this board to a front footed surfer? is this a good board for small mushy wavs? I'm actually riding a sub driver 5'10 x 19 x 2 3/8 (27.3 L), which dimensiones would you recommend? thanks!

REAL Watersports - 10 years ago
Hi Bruno - the RV would work well for a front footed surfer and is definitely a good board for small mushy waves. How tall are you, how much do you weigh and where do you surf? Drop us a line at realpro@realwatersports.com if you want the fastest response and best advice!

I don't know which to choose between the r.v. and rnf5, which would you recommend?
I'm looking for a really easy to paddle and take off board on small waves or tricky conditions and at the same times agile board!
Thanks!

REAL Watersports - 10 years ago
Hi @Valerio Maggini , the RV is going to be easier to paddle and the RNF5 is going to be a little more agile. Call us at the shop: 252-987-6000 or live chat at realwatersports.com if you'd like the full low down and a personal recommendation. Thanks!

Cool looking board. Reminds me a lot of my Rusty Dwart. Will be interesting to hear some comparisons of the RV to the Dwart. Can you guys at REALl give us the low down on how the RV compares to other similar models from other shapers? Btw, I've also got a 5'8" Lost Bottom Feeder with the Futures Controllers, super sick board, kind of a magic board for junk to average waves and those fins are amazing.
REAL Watersports
REAL Watersports - 10 years ago
The RV is going to have a lot more of the domesticated series characteristics compared the dwart. That means it's going to have a wider sweet spot and glide better than the dwart. The single concave on the dwart means that it has a certain range that you can use it in and after that it gets too big. With the domesticated series you can ride the RV as big as you want. Hope that helps...

Nice review, Thanks! I love my couch potato and have wondered what the order is from grovel to hp with the Domesticated series. Would it now be Couch Potato>RV>LayZboy? Also how would the Bottom feeder fit in to that order? Thanks!
