you seem to have your fair share of Discus knowledge! Poor rainbow fish though

discus are very hard to take care of , if you are used to a goldfish bowl and only change the water when after a couple of months it looks and smells like piss .
this unfortunately is a great deal of fish keepers .

what is a good size tank for discus

I agree man, I honestly don't think any fish that's sold in stores are that hard to take care of. I think the reason why discus get so much hate is probably the same reason any cichlid does and that's the expense of them. in my area I medium size discuss will run 60 to 100$. so when one dies on a beginner they fell less tempted to buy more. unlike say a neon tetra that runs around 1$.

They are pretty much the same to look after as angel fish. I wish people wouldn't try to make out they are super difficult to keep lol.

So then why are Discus not sold in chain pet stores?
mark oates
mark oates - 7 years ago
some do, but they are expensive and just like salt water fish, some pet chains just don't want to deal with them.
Dannys Fishtanks
Dannys Fishtanks - 8 years ago
I've actually seen a couple at petco. I think they're expensive to keep and the mortality rate at a young age is higher than the other fish. Which would give them little profit.

hi i have discus for years, my ph is 4.5, they love it, your right danny it doesn't matter as long as they are not put in different water with a big ph difference.

It's not hard to take care of discus fish, it is however harder than with any other fish.
If you've had an aquarium with guppies or whatever, & the water instability made them die, then you'd just go out & buy more, but if you're spending 30-50$/fish then if one dies, you will be very discouraged to get more.
If you get a disease in your tank & you don't know how to treat it, then the fishes are most likely going to die. The food always needs to be of high quality & protein so the fish can grow & do well (otherwise they will cap up & stop growing) or worse.

I think there can often be confusion when people say how difficult discus are to keep. It's my opinion that they are not difficult to keep as long as the fish keeper understands water parameters and how to create the optimum environment to keep discus, for instance my local tap water is so hard that it is almost impossible to keep any fish other than goldfish in this water. However if you know the parameters and know how much RO water to mix with tap water to get a stable GH, KH and PH then you are half way there. It is also vital that you understand the nitrogen cycle and regularly measure the ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. I personally measure all these parameters weekly, change 40% of the water twice a week and run and external filter and an in tank moving bed filter. So is it difficult no, do you need to be dedicated to ensure your fish are healthy yes. Once when I was viewing a large setup the owner said to me that he didn't keep fish, he actually managed the water in it!

Discus are pretty easy but not for beginners. I keep mine in a planted tank with angel fish, clown loaches, tetras, siamese algae eater, rams, and cory cats. The Angels and discus sorta fought (They both kinda look related and are both cichleds) but 2 paired angel were at one side and the other discus stayed on the other side. My ram occasionally chases my discus but yeah

You shouldnt keep cories without substrate, as its their natural behaviour to forage... At least give them a large shallow bowl and fill it with sand or gravel

7.6 is low, I have a ph of 8.4 with discus. It's not the ph it's those cardinals that will eventually be eaten by the discus if they aren't already now.

+mark oates Yes, as I said in my previous message; Rummy Noses may be a way to go.
mark oates
mark oates - 7 years ago
+Joe Amazon I would honestly recommend a bigger tetra if you are worried about them being eating. Even though I said it work for does not meen it will for for you. Every fish has there own personality. Rummy nose for me always worked out like the neons. Maybe try a blood fin tetra they get alot bigger then neons and rummy nose and are super fast and are always in a tight school. Rainbow are another excellent choice.

My water parameters were on point along with my pH; a well established tank running for over 6 months with solid bio filtration with 5-10 ppm of nitrates. I wish that was true for me, but I actually seen them nip at them and I have a Discus species only tank, other than the neon's. Heck, I've seen Bolivian Rams bite at them. This all happens at night when the tetras are on their sleeping limited movement mode, hence making them vulnerable. Like many people in the hobby say, "If it's small enough to fit in another fishes mouth, they may be eaten. I'll try Rummy Noses since they're bigger of a tetra and less vulnerable in size. In the end, they're so many variables in this hobby, that what works for one tank may not work for someone else's. Thanks for sharing your story.
mark oates
mark oates - 7 years ago
+Joe Amazon honestly iv had lots of different fish with discus including neons. And they where always fine. honestly the reason why yours dies probably wasn't because the discus ate them but maybe died because of water conditions. Not saying your where bad but it seems like neons just suck and die easy compared to other tetras. and the reason why you didn't find the neons was because the where eaten by the other fish after death.
Hawken Valhalla
Hawken Valhalla - 8 years ago
+Joe Amazon cardinals get quite a lot bigger than neons, neons also like colder temperatures than discus whereas cardinals share very similar temps. Most discus videos on youtube have cardinals in the tank or some other tetras.
Joe Amazon
Joe Amazon - 8 years ago
I had 17 neon tetra's in my tank and within 2 weeks they were all gone. I only pulled 5 dead tetra's out the rest disappeared. Maybe cardinals are different, not sure I didn't get them because they're more expensive.
Hawken Valhalla
Hawken Valhalla - 8 years ago
+Joe Amazon cardinals are perfectly fine with discus, infact they are the most popular fish to pair with them alongside rummynose tetras.

I always like Discus can I put them with oscars? My oscars is not the aggressive.
mark oates
mark oates - 7 years ago
your better off not putting them together, not because of aggression but the fact that Oscars get very big and should be kept by themselves or in a very large tank with other south american cichlids.

I agree that domesticated Discus are a lot easier than wild Discus basically they are Cichlids.  I personally do not like the domesticated color varieties.  When I kept Discus I kept the Brown Discus which I still think is the most beautiful Diskus variety, and they were wild caught.  It is hard to find any domesticated Brown Discus today, but even back in the 1970's  once the Discus were acclimated they were simply large Cichlids!  True the  water parameters had to be monitored very carefully, and any hopes of breeding them you had to provide them with warm, soft acidic water but keep in mind that all of today's Discus came from those wild specimens imported , and the pioneering steps of a few great breeders all over the world.

i think its hard to take care of them if u feed them a lot especially a food like protein which makes the water more dirty. which means more water changes. my theory is bigger discus over time, higher risk . beginners should be fine if they just want average size and feed them flakes lol keep it up bro!
