How to Properly Tie a Kayak Anchor Using a Anchor Knot and a Zip Tie

In this video, I show how to tie an anchor so that lost anchors from being snagged are virtually eliminated. This method will save tons of time freeing a stuck anchor and answers that question about why there is a hole on the bottom (or back) of folding anchors and bruce anchors. This is not the only way to rig this up, but it's cheap. You can use anchor trip links with and without chain, but at the cost of a zip tie, this method is hard to beat for lighter gear used in kayaks and a lot of freshwater boats. Thanks for watching and I hope this helps save someone's anchor!

It's a good idea to use another D shackle at the top to prevent the possibility of losing the locking ring.

if you concerned about the zip ties, you can use two of the very small ties hooked together, or substitute twist ties. ( the kind you get on loaves of bread etc) thank you for posting this

Good job of explaining it. Zip ties are new for me, this beats the light line tie off.

I dont like this tecnic,i personally try a 2 lines anchorage sistem and work easy and properly. In a year fishing how many zippties drop off into d water by 20 fishermanw in same river, creeck or 10 scuare miles of sea???. Too mush trash on waters now and is enoght with a lead tackle on oceans botton. That's my point

use a small loop of 20# test, with a tail tied back on the rope. mono breaks, nothing left behind.

Good point....that got me thinking on a way to be able to use this method without leaving anything behind.  Use a LARGE ziptie on the anchor eye and then attach a downrigger line release to that ziptie, then clip the line into the rubber pinchers of the downrigger release....or even use a Prussian knot rig

Only problem I can see with this is that having the fixing point at the base means that the sliding weight/grapple support that can move up or down the shaft of the anchor and it will tend to slip back down if it comes loose and the anchor is being pulled up from the bottom with a chain shackled to the base.......this happened to me (on dry land) when I added my zip tie the first time.
So I've put a large split ring through the top fixing point and attached the zip tie to that. This means that the weight can't slide down the shaft and fall off the anchor when you are retrieving it from the bottom (I hope!). HTH someone not to lose part of their anchor.

I found that my zip ties are strong so I cut part way thru it to weaken it.
SuperBardley
SuperBardley - 7 years ago
Lurechunker Too 35lbs is about the most we can pull from a kayak before we get into tipping trouble, so buy zip ties that are rated for less than 35lbs. and you'll be fine. One key idea is to make the heavy pull with the bow of the boat pointed at the anchor so the pull is along the kayak's length , NOT off to its side or you will go swimming.

I too carry some thin zip ties with me now.

Do not use a very big zip tie. They don't break as easily as he makes people think-especially if you are in a kayak and not able to keep a steep angle which is necessary to make it break. I use as small of a zip tie as I can find-like those used to zip-tie around a jig skirt. I keep them in my tackle box already anyway
AnglerX

Great idea! I'll have to see if my anchor has a hole at the bottom to even do this. BTW there's a Harbor Freight just about in every city and their zip ties are pretty weak and would work perfect versus say a 3M or better quality zip tie.

This is a good technique. To further simplify it, I remove the shackle from the front end of the anchor and tie the line directly to the hole in the anchor.

I'll use the bread twist off a loaf of bread also! They will pull off a little easier!

First, thanks for the excellent instruction for tying an anchor knot!  I like the theory of the zip tie, but I know that zip ties are pretty strong and the amount of pull force you can apply from a floating kayak is pretty weak.  I am not really convinced it is practical to pull a line from a kayak with enough power to snap even a thin zip tie.
Cuivre
Cuivre - 6 years ago
I lost an anchor even when using this method. It was windy and I didn't have enough anchor line to get to the bank wheree I could really pull hard. I had to cut the anchor line. There is little risk in using a very small zip tie-especially if you have spares. Using a too big of one will NOT let you break it-and could be downright dangerous.

+K Carnes OK, Great! Thanks for the cleaver idea and comments.

it's very possible to snap a standard size zip tie. The ones that he is using are very easy to break so it's only serving as a temporary holder for the anchor line. Even a standard size 8"zip tie will snap with ease. Keep in mind a zip tie doesn't snap into, it's only breaking the small tab in the head of the zip tie.
TheManCaveVideo
TheManCaveVideo - 7 years ago
+Explorer Mike the small wire ties break with about 18 pounds of force. I have done it from my kayak and it's pretty easy. Once in position to free the anchor, a quick jerk on the line will snap the wire tie quicker than trying to just pull against it. Hope this helps.
