If you are looking at the acrylic CPR boxes, then there is nothing inside of them. It just serves as a sealed place for the water to exit the tank through the bulkhead. :-)

Drill holes ? What do I do with all my fish, corals,stock etc while I spend all day stripping my tank down . If the tanks empty I may as well have started with a sump rather than dicking about drilling holes

I was thinking the same thing. If I saw these dude's at my park I would call the police. LOL... really it seems whenever someone starts out on camera they are always monotone and stiff because they are thinking about it too much. Later on when they get more comfortable they become more natural. This is how everyone does it. Find your favorite youtube personality and go back and look at the first few videos they will always be stiff unless they have had some acting training. These guys do get better.LOL

No, I wouldn't recommend it. On most tanks the rim offers some structural support, and covers the sharp unpolished glass edges to prevent injury.

+logan petty You could use a stand pipe, but they aren't the prettiest thing out there. There is also the option of an external overflow box, but that requires a custom tank generally.

Sorry this may be a question but to I am going to be adding a sump to my already established system. When I add the sump and add more saltwater will it change the salinity in the main display tank or will it stay the same salinity as the display tank?

Hole size will depend entirely on what size plumbing you plan on running, and the bulkheads you choose.

+ReptileBoy98 It will highly depend on the pump you choose to go with. I would pick a pump that meets your head pressure demands, and install a ball valve on it's output so you can control the flow.

+Listat De Lioncourt - For your 57 gallon tank I would recommend around 570 gallons per hour. You should be able to handle that with a 3/4" main drain, a 3/4" emergency drain, and a 3/4" return. Check with your tank manufacturer before you drill into the bottom of the tank since the bottoms are often tempered glass and cannot be drilled.

Question, can't I just use two U-Tube aquarium return with adjustable nozzles, one as an overflow connected to flex tubing straight to my sump and the other as a return to my tank? The u-tube used as the overflow will have a hole drilled with a check valve that connects to a pump in the middle of the u part that hangs over the tank edge to suck out air and allow the water to flow down to sump. To me the purpose of the sump is to remove all eyesore, bulky equipment that takes away from the beauty of the tank, so placing a black box in the tank or a hang on back overflow defeats the purpose of all that work, I just want one small, not too noticeable tube sucking water out to my sump and another small tube returning water to my tank. Please let me know your thoughts on this idea. Thanks. ;)

+YOUSIYC7 It's possible, but I would personally avoid doing so. If the power were ever to go out, or if you had a pump failure the drain would continue to siphon and you might end up overflowing your sump. With that being said I have seen a few freshwater planted tanks if I remember correctly that run off this premise. For safety I would recommend an overflow box however.

+Luis Rodas Yup, it is a 40 gallon breeder. We had Lyretail anthias, some clowns, and a pair of firefish back then. When we transferred everything from this tank to the new 70 gallon, the majority of these fish came with. :)

+george scott Generally matching the return flow to the overflow rating is a best practice, however I have found that going a little above the rating doesn't have much of a negative effect. For plumbing there are various flow calculators you can use that will factor in flow and give you a recommended plumbing size. The easiest way to figure out the rating of your overflow box is to contact the manufacturer of your tank/overflow box. :)

Wow! I've had an interest in aquariums for years and I've always wanted a reef, but a lot of the stuff I read and looked up really just went over my head. After watching these I've got a much, much better understanding of what I'm doing. I'm going to start with a 40 gallon tank too, but from there I'm hoping I can one day have my "Dream tank" which will essentially be a huge wall of nothing but reef.

so as a beginner with little to no experience, i watched all the videos consecutively in one sitting only to realize that starting at this point, might be the higher initial startup cost but it seems that going this route from the start is actually less of a hassle. i mean i really want to get my own saltwater tank one day, and the more i think about it, i just feel it pays off to start with a sump from the start. i also feel keeping things organized and clean and out of the way, is just the most aesthetically pleasing, i mean thats the point of the hobby right? the joy of seeing the beauty of the tank from every angle? as far as costs, starting here with the sump and the reefkeeper and all the gadgets and do dads, what should i look to spend with like a 60 gallon tank? not including livestock as i would prefer to have sand coral aneneme a couple clown and some finding nemo fish.. i mean i would like a realistic number...and one other number, what would be an expected monthly cost of such a setup?

+Dominic Vanacore Absolutely. In my humble opinion starting with a sump if you have room/budget will save you money in the long run. Some beginners will buy a tank with a ton of hang-on equipment only to find out they love the hobby and end up spending more money to upgrade to a sump later on. Cost is very hard to estimate since everyone will have different setups, budgets, and preferences. If I had to guesstimate that setup could cost anywhere from $1000 to upwards of $3000 for that tank, and a monthly cost of around $40-100+.

You guys should totally do a video/series on "low tech" beginner tank setups. I'm debating doing a sump with a 40 Breeder under my 50G tank. I'm hoping to work out a way to keep from adding baffles to the tank, so that it can be just a 40G tank below the 50G tank, not a traditional sump. This would allow me to only have powerheads and an overflow and return in the display, while moving filters, heaters, etc. all to the lower tank. This lower tank would be basically just a refugium for organisms that don't coexist well in the main tank, or fish that end up needing separated(I hope to not have this problem). I'm working on ideas on how to handle the inlet from the overflow box, and I think that I will place the return pump onto a platform near the top rear corner of the sump tank. If my power ever goes out, or the siphon breaks, there will be sufficient room in either tank for the amount of water that will flow "one-way". This will take a little bit of trial and error, with the height of the platform, and the water level of the display tank, and with a safety hole drilled into the return to prevent siphoning back down through the pump. I may look into putting a check valve into that side of the plumbing as well. I think that I will be able to make this work, without anty baffles or drilling, and so that the 40Breeder could always be used as a normal aquarium in the future. As of right now I'm working on the stand for the two tanks, and they'll just be 2 separate systems for a while. Let me know if you guys think this is workable. Lastly, I hope to be ordering a RO unit from you guys after the new year, so that my water is just that much better to start with. Do you think that by mixing my reef crystals with RO instead of well water, and doing regular water changes, that I will be able to keep a reef tank without a skimmer? I've been using HOB filters, circulation, lots of rock, and water changes with success up to this point, but I'm moving beyond FOWLR now and hope to start keeping mushrooms, zoanthids, xenia, and other hardy specimens. Lighting is 4 bulb T5HO with a single reflector, and I don't plan to get anything better until LED becomes more affordable. Fish I have or are on my list include: 2x Clownfish, Chalk Bass, Royal Gramma, Coral Beauty Angelfish, and a Sapphire Blue Damsel. I may eventually look into a goby or blenny and possibly a firefish, but for now those are the 6 fish I hope to have in the display. Any input would be most welcomed.... Happy Holidays

+Isaiah Furrow Ok, very cool! I'm not too sure on what you mean by putting the pump on a platform, but as far as running the sump without baffles go that is totally fine. Just keep in mind that as your water evaporates, your entire sump level will drop. You will want to use a good ATO to prevent that.

Doing regular weekly water changes may be enough to keep your nitrates and phosphates low, but it is really tough to say since there are so many different factors (what is fed, how often, your clean up crew, general maintenance habits, and amount of fish). You could always start the tank without a skimmer, and then eventually purchase one later on if need be. Happy Holidays to you as well!

If the Sump Pump is mounted at the correct level then there is no risk of overflow of the primary tank if a loss of siphon ever occurs.

Exactly, Always mount your pump almost as high as you can for both overflow protection and decreased head and better efficiency. Better to have to just replace a burnt out pump than have to replace the pump AND your floor ;)

I am planning to purchase a new tank setup using a sump for the first time, I really love a particular aquarium and cabinet but the overflow weir only comes with 1 hole. Should I avoid this as I don't think I'll be able to get this changed, my other option is not nearly as nice but comes with 3 holes (return also), Is there anywhere I can find out about these 2 different methods.

+Elliott Ong Very few things unfortunately. A couple of easy to keep corals would be ok as well as a few invertebrates like a shrimp. If it is your first tank though I would really start with something a bit larger. Something like 15-20g at a minimum. Very small tanks tend to be very hard to manage because the parameters can change very quickly.

+Luis Renee Romera This tank didn't have much more then a pair of clownfish and a couple of anthias. It was on the high side of stocking levels but I wouldn't call it overstocked. It is a standard 40breeder tank which is about 3ft long, 18" tall and 18" deep.

You're videos are awesome. I'm considering doing a 55 gallon tank with a similar set up to this video, but I honestly have no clue what I would need to do for the plumbing. What size Bulk Heads, piping, overflow, and anything else would you recommend me? Are there any kits available where I can purchase everything I would need at once?

+Arrash Darban Thanks for the kind words. Really with a 55g tank you could treat it basically the same as this 40breeder as it won't make much difference. You won't find much in the way of kits because every setup is different, but once you get the hang of it, its pretty easy. Tank that size I would use 3/4" bulkheads would could be as simple as a 3/4" thread x thread bulkhead and a male thread x barb 3/4" fitting screwed into it. From there you would put on a piece of 3/4" vinyl tubing and your done! I personally prefer the slightly more complicated setup like the one in the video though as it will be a lot quieter.

Hello BRS, I am a beginner and will set up a 75 gallon aquarium. I want to install the biggest sump possible. A proflex model 4 sump will just fit in the stand with 8.6 inches of length to spare. Will this work, or will I need more free space in the stand? Should I downgrade to the model 3? Thanks!

+cstorvold Generally your logic of the bigger sump the better is what I would suggest. 6" of extra room seems plenty fine unless you know of something particularly large that has to sit outside of it. Usually its just a couple of dosing jugs or similar which should fit fine.

If I have a 110 gallon aquarium that 5 feet long and planning on doing a reef tank with the herbie overflow. I want to do a 2 inch piping all around. Should the emergency or return be smaller piping or stick with 2 inch all around?

+ploopsies 2" is pretty huge, so it would work, but must folks would do a smaller main return and a larger emergency return if they had the room.With a tank that size, you could likely get by just fine with 1" and 1.5" drains (unless your putting some sort of gigantic pump on it).

I have a 150g tall tank 48x24x31. Can the drain holes be drilled lower and utilize a corner full length overflow that goes to the bottom?

+DCshadowdiver You'd have a pretty tough time finding a corner overflow but in theory you could. Make sure to check all the normal concerns, tempered glass, etc., but honestly, there isn't any real benefit to that and it just takes up more space

+Wayne Allen It depends on the bulkhead but the fitting/pipe always goes on the inside of the bulkhead.

The threads on the outside of the bulkheads only exist for the bulkhead nut, you can't attach any plumbing to them. If you get a slip bulkhead, you can glue a pipe right to the inside. If you get a threaded bulkhead, then you can use a threaded fitting (like a male pipe adapter, etc.) but all plumbing connections are on the inside. Threaded female if its a threaded bulkhead, a slip connection on a slip bulkhead - same as really any other plumbing fitting, an elbow, a union, a valve, etc

Check valves can fail, we suggest using them in areas where if they fail its not going to cause major disaster. For example, using them on your return lines for return pump because its more convenient but you should still make sure there is enough room in your sump to handle the water draining should you need it

As for drilling, wherever it is convenient. Keep in mind how you want to lay out your rock and put it where it will be out of the way.

If you have a threaded bulkhead with a threaded fitting going into it, that would need teflon tape. If you're referring to the bulkhead nut that holds the bulkhead to the glass, don't use teflon tape.

The differences are just whether you glue or screw the fitting in. Which one you want will be entirely up to how you plan on plumbing the tank.

Thank you. I also have a follow up question. On your website you have many different size diamond coated drill bits. Since 30mm is an inch I would think For a 1"overflow i would get the 30mm drill bit and a 1" bulkhead, but on your website, it says that for a 30mm drill bit, you use a 1/2" bulkhead. Could you tell me what size drill bit I need to get for a 1" overflow where water is flowing through a 1" pipe like in yours. Also, could you tell me the same for a 3/4" return. Thank you.

I think a sump is a good idea,you can run a more efficient skimmer and it will increase the water volume of your system and that will help keep water params stable which is critical in smaller tanks

They're called Reef Ready Aquariums. A lot more expensive than buying a tank, an overflow box, drill bit, and bulkheads. But of course it's safer because you won't have to risk your tank glass from cracking. If you don't want to spend about 100-200 dollars more, then I'd do some research on how to safely drill glass.

@BulkReefSupplyCom hey guys I've kept a freshwater tank for a while, and my lfs tells me that saltwater tanks can use hang on filters and less water changes. Is this true? he suggested buying the saltwater sand for the ph and he said the water here was naturally hard enough from the tap for the tank. Do I really need the sump? what size of hang on filter would I use for a 55 gallon or 70 gallon aquarium? and just fish or could i have some really hardy coral to?

there's no risk to using a hang on overflow if the pump in the sump is set up so that it loses suction when the water level drops in the sump.

Wouldn't the siphon part drain all of the water to the sump? Say if the pump didn't pump enough water out of the sump would the sump overflow? Or if the pump is too powerful, would it completely drain the sump and the pump would bun out leading to water being drained out of the sump? Please help I have no idea what im doing!

depends on your feeding habits and live stock. Best thing to do is to change them every day so you can get the fish poo and uneaten food out before it breaks down. Not many people do it that often because it is a pain. If you could swap them a couple times a weak you would be be doing better than most.

Stocking levels you see on the net are really just guidelines. It’s really about making sure your live stock selection has the appropriate amount of habitat for its species so they are not constantly fighting over it. While there is a healthy amount of fish in this tank very few of them share the same habitat or natural food sources so they get along very well. After that is just about water quality. More fish means better filtration and maintenance habits.

@adam1885282 LOL it is true.This tank has go through more changes than any tank I have ever seen.Obviously this is done to help demonstrate a common progression path most reefers go through but this is typically over a period of years rather than months. Honestly I am happy with how will the fish and corals have adapted to the pretty much constant environment changes and I do think it is important to mention I would never recommend anyone implement this many changes this quickly

@2micaveli the water wont go below the overflow box's teeth. Most that will drain back is about a half inch of water which the sump should hold. We siliconed the black overflow box over the drain pipe.

Yet another educational and informative video. My favorite part has to be that quick shot of the "stealth" top off water reservoir. Very cool idea. Now I may be able to sell the wife on a top off system of my own. Thanks BRS!

Good video, that reservoir box looks great! but where's the bean animal overflow? It's quieter than a herbie and has two fail safes.

Great series! I look forward to the up and coming episodes. Even after a handful of years of reef keeping, I can still appreciate the step by step process of building and upgrading a tank. I started out with a 40g myself and it too has undergone some large scale changes of equipment and devices. Keep up the good work. Btw, it may be nice to talk about some of the new livestock additions, such as the Helfrichi and the Anthias.

@stupidgoat It is referred to as a acrylic internal overflow box. I picked this one up from a local fish store and this is probably your best option. this question has been asked a handful of times already so for a more detailed answer you might want to check the other responses out.

@MrToony1 If you put the fuge on the back of the tank the pods won’t have to pass through the pump to get to the tank. Many species of pods will make it through the pump without harm but the long antennae species won’t. That said, I am not sure if it matters what species populates the tank. Best option might depend on the tank placement as well. For instance you might not want a hang on with a light on at night if it is in the bed room, in that case the sump would be better.

@jvin85 I have never done the beananimal but it looks like it uses a third overflow for additional safety and utilizes one for a very small amount of flow to keep things level yet still silent. Looks like it would work great but require additional space for the third hole and relatively good alignment on two of the holes. That said I have had a tremendous amount of success with the herbie which only requires two holes and success speaks for itself. Either way my guess is you would be happy.

Between the Beananimal and the Herbie silent flow methods, which would you suggest for people to use? Are there any particular reasons to use one vs the other? Lastly, I'm at the stage I'm ready to order a drilled aquarium, however I'm concerned about width of the pipe. How do I know how wide I need to have the piping?

Love the vid. Wondered if you could give a little more detail on exactly how this was plumbed, what fittings did you use. There are so many types on your sales site I simply have never plumbed before. I want as many things to be removable as possible but I'm not sure which fittings go where. Also, do you sell the black box used in this video or do you have instructions on how to make it.? 55 gal main 40 breeder seahorse 20 long ats fuge 29 tall for return,skimmer help linking with mimimal glue.

@satchfan1100 Internal overflow boxes like these are often produced and sold directly by acrylic workers, sometimes they have their own websites as well. Off hand I don't know of any because I purchase mine from a friend who owns a local fish store. In most cities one or more fish stores will drill your tank for you and have boxes like these available. We had our own supplier at one point but he stopped doing acrylic work a while ago. We may find a replacement in the future.

Also,make sure the glass sump you drill is not tempered. There are youtube vids showing what happens when trying to drill tempered glass on accident:(

@jwmahin1 I would use normal granules or HC if you need to fit more media in one reactor. For catbon the ROX carbon because it is the hardest. I wouldn't use lignite because it is rather soft and if there was a bit of tumbling going on by accident it could grind up..

@NuttinSpeciaI UV sterilizers are designed to reduce the spread of disease and algae in the tank however most are what I’d call “hobby grade” and almost useless. If you want to use one it needs to be properly sized to your tank which means the proper bulb strength, flow rate and contact time. There are a couple decent brands out there, we recommend the Emperor Aquatics and I trust their tank size recommendations. They are also trusted by zoos, universities and public aquariums.

@tcwinsor Thanks for the kind words. We do plan on coming back to 20 + topics that were touched on in this series but not covered in entirety. I agree it would be very helpful to have complete beginning to end guides on many of these projects. Most of them are 10+ minute demos on their own so it just didn’t make a lot of sense to try and jam it in here.

You guys should do a video on the step by step on the overflow and return set up like on the 40 breeder in this video, and then sell the components and instructions as a DIY kit. Great series by the way. very helpful.

@mrgully95 It is certainly full. Looks more full than it is when people are standing next to it because they all flock to the center to be fed. Normally they are more spread out and it looks much more natural. Nice thing about our two rock aquascape is it is really easy to catch fish and move them to another tank. I am also 90% sure the last episode of this series will be time to upgrade to a larger tank : )
