V3 Rocket compared to EVO? I like the EVO but thinking about getting a V3 for a little more range.... between quiver.... thoughts,,,, had hypto not a fan... also have a fire wire dom for flatter days....

Love my Evo, got the 5'7" 35L timbertek model (I'm 46yo, 88kg)...can charge hard in waves from waist high to up to just over head height then it starts to slide a bit much once overhead (might get a better fin set for control though). Took a few blasts on it to get used to the short length and the incredible speed. This thing turns on a dime, can do hard/tight re entries on it and it sticks to my feet like glue, no wobbles, full control every single time. I ride it as a quad and every now and then when it's cranking at head high I'll put on the small nubster fin in the middle.

Even thinking of retiring my CI Fred Rubble as the Evo has become my go to for almost all the waves I like to ride.

Do you reckon the evo could work as a twin fin or even with keels or controlers?

Hi Thank you for the awesome reviews. I had an evo FST 5'3 for 2 years
and loved it until it clean snapped under the lip of a Oaxaca barrell.
Living in Texas I travel to surf so I need a versatile board that works
in waves ranging from windswells in the Gulf Coast, to California and
perfect barrels back home in Mexico. Now I am shopping for a new board,
not sure whether to go for the SKX or another EVO.. I really like that
it's available in the Timbertek construction too. Thoughts on FST vs
Timbertek?

Benny. Just a question. I am also a lame surfer and find myself surfing in bali and lombok. Catch waves easy. Stand up easy pezy. Gaining heaps confidence in going down the line. I am fit 165cm 65kg. Heres the thing. I want a board that looks good has plenty enough volume will allow me to grow progress and develop new skills, a board that i can lug around easy and carry around especially on the plane. A board that is an all rounder. What would you recommend i terms of size for the evo or omni? I love both the shape of the evo and nano, no sharp points to poke an eye out. Will 5'6 evo be too small? Cheer. Looking for some ideas. Tx

Swee Yong - hey man. I have the omni and it is fucking magical. It's such an easy board to surf - it paddles really easily and has a very wide sweet spot. I went larger in volume and i'm making waves and drops i never would on more traditional shortboards just because i'm paddling in so early. It has so much natural speed, especially with performers in smaller surf (the foils give them heaps of speed) it just takes off. But the round tail combined with the concaves just gives it this super smooth feeling. Its not explosive but it loves doing big arcing carves and cutbacks. I've surfed it to 2 - 3 feet overhead and its now my go to board. I'm seriously thinking about selling all my other stuff and just going to firewire/slater designs.

That board has made me a better surfer. I don't have an EVO (looking at buying one because i love the Omni so much) but from what I can tell the EVO will go better in surf under head high - I live in the south coast of Australia and we usually get waves shoulder high and above. When its at waste high the Omni, well it doesn't struggle but its probably not the best board - it takes a little more work to paddle in. So depending on teh waves you surf maybe teh EVO would be better?

Dude, this may sound obvious but have you thought of a Hypto Krypto? They are light, stable, small, fast and fun. Just don't buy the global surf industries ones they are fucking garbage. Also if you are looking for a higher volume board that has epic performance try the DHD black diamond. I had one and I loved it - amazingly explosively responsive board. It really is just a high volume performance shortboard. Not as easy to paddle as the others though.

BIG BACONLOVAH - dude try a 6'6 OMNI @ 47lt. I'm 6'1 230lbs and I love the thing. I only ride it as a thruster with large performers in under head high (the foils generate speed) and accelerators over head. Fucking magical board.

I had this board and hated it. Took it back after 4 surfs. Heard so many good things about it, wanted to love it. Just couldn't. One thing reviewers of this board need to mention is the material is very different. It's SUPER floaty and corky, and feels a bit slippery under the feet. If you're accustomed to PU boards, and primarily surf PU boards (like me) this will take awhile to get used to. I didn't have the patience for this board, got frustrated with it, took it back. Also, the shape felt weird under my chest. Maybe I'm a creature of habit and like more traditional boards. My 2 cents.

how does this compare to the puddle jumper in 1-3 ft which would u grab for small beach brreak

Hey there, thanks for the good question! They are quite different. The Tomo is more of an average wave all rounder - I think the Lost Puddle Jumper definitely has the edge in the smaller stuff

+Rob Wallace Hey Rob, what waves will you be surfing most? I liked the Vader when it was a bit bigger and better whereas the EVO is, to me, more of an small to medium size, average wave all rounder.

I've had my 5'5 Eco since July
Overall, best board I've ridden.
In knee to slightly over head clean conditions the Eco is peerless in wave catching- speed generation and turning.
Down the line it feels fast but as soon as it gets on rail it bites and turns so easily.
Only downside is the deep footwells in the deck. Much deeper than any other board I've owned.
Tim Blizzard
Tim Blizzard - 6 years ago
Hey Glassy, how has it held up over the years? I have an OMNI which i'm in love with and there's a good deal on the EVO locally, but worried about durability.

+Glassy Bouys Awesome GB, yes, it's a pretty special little board. Bummer about the compressions, mine is holding up well!

Thanks for another great review! I picked up a vader about 10 months ago (helped by your review), back then I commented about getting used to it and liking certain aspects of it, mainly speed. Now after riding it for quite a while, I love it even more! I make sections that I wouldn't before and after modifying my stance a little I'm doing some great turns and surfing better than ever (at age 47). It's become my ride in all conditions board. I'm sold on the MPH design. I'm considering adding the Evo to my quiver and while it probably won't give me the performance that my vader gives me it will be something different to "tool" with.
My question is should I stick to the same volume that I ordered my vader for the evo? In your vader review you went with a bigger board, did you do the same with the Evo?
I also went around the top end of my volume range with the vader and love it, but sometimes I think I could have gone smaller. Sounds like I need to by a couple more in different sizes! Lol!
Thanks!
CompareSurfboards.com
CompareSurfboards.com - 8 years ago
+Ricardo Schargel Awesome Ricardo, great to hear you love your Vader, too. Regarding volume, we are in the same frame of mind and I did go a touch smaller with the EVO (5'11 at 41.3L's vs. 6'1 at 43.5L's for the Vader). This size/volume was just fine but I don't think it would have been a drawback to go the next size up, especially given the EVO is designed for more average conditions.
