West Marine has changed their price match policy within the past few weeks, so check it out closely. For instance they wont match another store unless it's within a certain distance of their store. So in my instance the store I always had them match is 70 miles away, so no more matches. I can't understand why they don't try to be more competitive. Often times their prices are higher than the manufactures suggested retail price.

Hydrogen peroxide works well on mold it kills the spores and cleans the stains. You can wash fabric with it as well. It's the oxy in oxyclean. It's also cheeper you can buy it in the grocery store. I have used this in my motor home. I don't generally have a repeat of mold in that spot. Some times it comes back. I've gotten into the habit of washing as winter starts the whole inside of my home. Then spot clean as needed. In the spring I clean everything again. I also run 2 12v dehumidifiers until it stops raining. A pain yes but no mold. No dripping ceilings, windows or anything else either. I hope this helps.

If you have an area that needs a lot of scrubbing buy yourself a 3M-18730 Roloc Bristle Disc, and a disc holder. With the cleaner of your choice, it will clean very well. I actually use them to clean my bathtubs, LOL. They do not hurt the finish, yet still scrub deep.

They don't price match to web sites any longer, it has to be a local competitor. That has just happened in the past week.

Another good product to clean rust stains and general fiberglass stains is Davis FSR. Comes in a 16 ounce jar and is a blue color.

Stainless steel wool. I just looked it up. That should solve the rust issue. There is also brass wool.

Unfortunately West Marine is doing away with the price matching. They will only match Amazon or a local business within 50 miles as of April 15th. Too many of us have taken them up on their price matching. Bummer....

Was there a reason you left a coil of line on deck?
Shaun & Julia Sailing
Shaun & Julia Sailing - 5 years ago
So we would have something to clean the following season! No, it was the coil of line that the boatyard used to control our boat when moving it. They had just left it on deck, lol.

I good cleaning agent found in any hardware store or paint store is TSP read the directions carefully. If you had problems with mold will the boat is stored, here is a link to the solution to that problem. http://sail-delmarva.blogspot.com/2016/12/mildew-treatment-for-pennies.html?m=1 I highly recommend this solution.

The bilge cleaner is great for bilge and engine compartment but i agree the spraybottles are useless i bought the type of spraybottle used for weeds and oil where you build up a pressure instead

Cold enough to keep others out of the marina and for you to put on coats. And yet washing the boat barefoot. Only you guys. ;) More to the point. There is a metal polish that truckers use called Blue Magic. The stuff if phenomenal. You don't need much per application and it shines things up easily and the results are amazing. It also leaves a silicon film behind that protects from tarnish reforming to quickly. It is Only for metal though.

I use Spray Nine, which usually works on the first pass. The product is quite potent, so you need to use latex gloves and rinse with a lot and lots of water. Its removes rust, mould and friends' black "non streak" running shoe soles. It made my 38 year old fiberglas deck look factory new.

Thanks for keeping the episodes going and being entertaining! It's funny how many time I've heard to use "bar keepers friend" for most anything. Because of this I figured I should give it a try and it does work extremely well on stainless, pots and pans, fiberglass and formica. It will work faster than both starbright solutions. Buy it from Home Depot in powder form which will cost about $2 (looks like the common Ajax or Comet container) and maybe the bar keeper's friend spray if you're feeling adventurous.

Great video thank you! I prefer to give my business to companies that give low prices and good service everyday to everyone. But if you have to go to West Marine that's a good way to get a fair price. It's a pain in the neck to have to research everything all the time for a fair price.

If you use a combo of peroxide dawn and baking soda on your deck it comes up amazing ! Cheaper better apply with was broom let sit 20 min. and non toxic but you must rinse well..won’t hurt gel coat won’t require scrubbing just gentle brushing...-1 bottle of hydro peroxide 2 drops of blue dawn detergent 2 tbsp baking soda ...buy it all at the dollar store. I’ve been using this magic on our boat for about 8 yrs now works the best

FYI they JUST changed the price-matching again this month. Now they ONLY match Amazon Prime items sold directly from Amazon and not even partner sellers. So in reality it pretty much sucks.

Time to go back to buying from Defender....

+Shaun & Julia Sailing don't forget Jamestown Distributors too. Ive used them a few times. They have good deals on Vetus exhaust hoses in sizes WestMarine would not even stock or special order in rolls less than 50 feet. And for bronze half-round that was for the rub-rail.

+SV Barry Duckworth That's too bad :(. Defender it is then!

Yeah, I know. I am a huge WestMarine fanboy. I used to stop into whatever store I was nearby and shop and shoot the breeze with the employees. Since this new policy has been in effect I haven't gone into the local store even once, even though I walk right by it a couple of times a week. It is right across the street from the grocery store where we are shopping while we are here in Vero Beach. The bus actually drops off right in front of the WM.

So sorry! Defender is much cheaper now and delivers right to the marina office for a quick & easy pickup. There is even a 15-minute dinghy dock right in front of the office so picking up a package couldn't be easier.

If you're taking rust off of anything plastic, even metal... a very diluted solution of oxalic acid will do it.
If you don't want to figure out how to make that, just buy some barkeepers friend, it's basically the same thing with a slight abrasive in the mix. But you shouldn't need to scrub much to remove the rust, the diluted acid takes care of it. Just don't leave that acid there forever, and don't let it dry on there, rinse thoroughly when done and don't rely just on spraying to remove the acid when you're done, scrub it off to make sure. Also make sure you rinse your boat off thoroughly to get to the places the acid might drain to, just to make sure you're not leaving acid in corners of your boat. Acid is fine to remove rust, but if you leave slight solutions of it in corners or places with dissimilar metals for years and years and years, you can cause problems.

Yeah, oxalic acid is magic for rust. Sold as deck cleaner here. Bad for metal and marine run off. Try bleach for other stains.
SV Barry Duckworth
SV Barry Duckworth - 5 years ago
Barkeeper's Friend is the bomb. They sell a powder and a gel. I like the powder better for most things, but on the boat it tends to get wet and clumpy. So on the boat we keep the gel on hand. It is one of our go-to cleaners and lives under the sink with the rest of the cleaning supplies.
