Quick tips for catamaran sailors S02 E03 furl the jib, snap the shackle, cut the rope

Jib furling in a strong wind can end up being quite flappy and untidy. Here we look at how we can roll the jib nicely. Jib battens getting caught on the mast can give you the rage. Here's how to address that. Fitting a snap shackle to your mainsheet makes it extremely easy to take the top block off and on. If one of your lines has a separated core, it can be fixed - here we'll take a look how. There you go! Let me know if there's anything else. Just ran out and checked if I could light a cigar with a regular lighter... it is true you can, took me a few tries. However, I would have preferred the hot knife to light it instead.

Selden makes snap shackles that match up well to harken blocks, the 40mm block fits the 50 series, the 57 fits the 60 series and so on

I sail a H16 usually solo and it always was a pain to pop the jib over in light wind. Adding Hobie halyard clips on the mast helped by pulling the halyards back further so they were less likely to get caught by the jib battens.

Recently, I also switched to the Hobie super jib battens and this makes it a lot easier to pop the jib over when backwinding during a tack. I realize that they are not "Class legal for racing" but then I also have a solid aluminum mast and am primarily a recreational sailor who likes to go fast and fly a hull.

I probably wouldn't sail if the wind was so high that I needed to reef, but I see you have reef points in your mainsail. Can you talk about adjustments to the main halyard, and how to properly reef the main sail? Also, should you be caught out in a bad spot, which sail to drop and which one to keep up in order to properly control the boat so you're not floating uncontrollably

Every one of them useful. I don't have a furling jib, but was still willing to learn about it!
Keep it up!

I remember it like yesterday how we were unable to furl the jib of the Fox for ages, until you came, zoomed down to the harbour just under the jib, furled it perfectly, and walked the boat back So embarassingly simple. "Why haven't you thought of that yourself?"

I distinguish between sailing and seamanship. Sailing well is "easy", it is the seamanship that is the hard thing. Like here, how to furl the jib, or, when the stormfront is coming, when is the point not to keep on trying to get in as fast as possible, turn the boat in the direction you can ride out the initial gust and stay upright.
Happened at Wildwind as well. Practically the whole "fleet" capsized, just one guy did the above.

EIther you sail enough to find out what is right first hand (but that also means you might do it wrong a number of times until you find out) or you think about such situations beforehand.

Topics for a new video series? The editorial challenge is not to bore people stiff.

How about assing the snapshackle to you amazon store? Or the GPS logger watches?

Thank you so much for the snap shackle tip! I saw that in a previous video last fall and bought snap shackles for my jib and main sheet. What a difference! I dock at a sea wall and don’t have a beach. Being able to detach the sails quickly have been a life saver. Keep up the good work!!!

What would you do if you were caught in a severe thunderstorm, it happened to me this weekend winds went from 10-15 to 50-60 mph. Weather was already overcast from the time I heard first clap of thunder to the gusty winds and rain was maybe 10 minutes. I abandoned my catamaran and took a ride on the back of a PWC who realize I was going to be in trouble. Pretty scary

been caught out twice like that. Now I keep an eye on whats going on with the clouds and head for the slipway. Or at least get on a tack that will take me to the same shore as the slip. I sail in an enclosed harbour so the worst that can happen is a long walk home. Clear weather isnt so simple but if the wind suddenly drops and starts in little gusts from different directions then chances are a real strong wind is about to kick in. I head to the shore and wait it out. Its frightening when conditions change so fast.
