Sailboat Haul Out Tips: 1 BIG Boat,1 SMALL Travel Lift (Patrick Childress Sailing Tips #39)

Sailboat Haul Out Preparations: 1 big Boat; 1 small Travel Lift & 5 Cheeky neighbors in the boat yard, in South Africa! (Patrick Childress Sailing #39) Ep 219 Step 173 Ep. 36 Upon arrival in Richards Bay, South Africa, we prepare our blue water sailboat, SV Brick House for another haulout for boat Maintenance, sailboat upgrades, and of course new bottom paint. We will be doing lots of boat work here. Patrick Childress shows how he cleans the boat, tests the water for drinking, kills the invading ants before they infest our boat, and then gets us ready to fit the boat in to a travel lift that is a little too small to accommodate our rigging. We have to unattached the forestays to fit on the travel lift, and Patrick demonstrates the best way to do this without taking off the sails, or disassembling the entire profurl roller furling drum. Hauling a sailboat out of the water, even on a travel lift that is a bit too small doesn’t have to be chaotic. Here is the ant poison we have carried with us around the world that has worked 99.9% of the time with ants. Hi Patrik, what do you think about coppercoat?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
So far we have been disappointed with nearly every bottom
paint we have put on our boat. Soft ablatives do not self-ablate, medium-hard
paints stay on the boat longer but the good toxins leach away so they eventually require
hand scrubbing. Instructions say to put more paint on for more protection,
especially at the waterline. That is a lot of BS. International 640 is the only
bottom paint which sort of worked…but still needed to be scrubbed. There has
been no getting around having to go over the side and hand scrub the bottom. There
is nothing left to try but CopperCote. I have just removed about 5 layers of
old bottom paint in preparation for CopperCote and we will see how it works
into the future. I am trying to finish up a video about removing the existing
layers of antifouling, which is part of the preparation for applying
CopperCoat. Should have the new vid up this coming Friday.

Pintle and gudgeon, are my two favorite. For the rest of the boat, we really get back to common English, like "living room" "bath room" "kitchen", which really annoys some new cruisers. I once called it a "salon rather than a saloon" and got severely corrected...so now it will always be "living room". In the upcoming video, I will be sure to point out the clevis pin. Thanks for watching.

Why could you have not sprayed the lines to prevent the ants from crawling on to the boat. Would that contaminate the lines?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
Do you have a suggestion on what to spray the lines with?
Juan S

Can you please explain why you began to unscrew the hoses ?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
The only hose in the video is the yellow water hose. Maybe you mean the turn buckle of the back stay. If so, that is to greatly release the tension and ease the pressure on the clevis pin holding the head stay and staysail-stay, so the pins could be removed and the stays moved away from the bow and off to the sides of the boat. There is a bar going across the travel lift which would hit those stays if left in place. We can't back into the travel lift because of the stern arch and the high elevation of the Radar and wind generator.

Rebecca does not like the new music either. I like the new music. Another viewer likes the new music better than the old music as the old music was too hard...….I would prefer the old music but there is a problem with copyright so I had to discontinue using it. The ocean sailing we do is not always a pleasant Sunday sail so I don't want strumming lullaby music. If you ever hear anything suitable on the YouTube free-to-use music in their Creator Studio, please let me know and I will check it out.

Not seen too often but they do visit now and then... At least they don't get into the galley.

Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
Not a boat owner might be the best way to go... if you can sail on other peoples boats. In Newport, Rhode Island, one can rent a J-22 for $25 an hour;  put it back on the mooring and drive away. Far cheaper and easier than owning a boat. There are plenty of crew networking organizations to match crew with boat owners.

Patrick. It looks like it has been a long sail! When you are tying up to the pier your hair looks so long! Or is it just that we always see you wearing a hat? That fender board idea is terrific. I will have to remember to have one of those on board for just such an occasion.

Curious about your comment to another about how 43 ft might be a better fit. My wife and I are planning on buying a boat in 2 years, and heading for the Caribbean, and I have been looking in the 36-38 foot range. Mostly older sailboats that are considered good for passage making. Currently, I think a Pearson 36 Cutter, also called the 367, checks a lot of boxes for us. But if you would go 43, you must have a 43 footer in mind, what is it?
Thanks for all your videos, they have educated and motivated me, hopefully I can make it 2 more years!

Patrick Childress Sailing I wasnt aware that Tarka was calling it quits. They just posted a video 2 days ago in the San Blas and everything seemed fine. Also a correction: Tarka is a Scandanavian built Albin Vega 27, not a Pearson Triton but a close resemblance.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
+H Rap Brown I lived on a Catalina 27 for 5 years. In Durban, S. Africa, I had run into a couple from the U.S. who were sailing around the world on a Colombia 26. Somehow they completed their circumnavigation and stayed married. The required size of an ocean crossing cruising sailboat has greatly increased since the days of Hiscock and Payson. I can't believe these monster catamarans that are now everywhere. If you watch "The Adventures of Tarka" he said he is ending his sailing and heading back to the U.S.. Total speculation but I would not be surprised if his beautiful girlfriend found camping out on a 26' Triton a bit too challenging.
H Rap Brown
H Rap Brown - 4 years ago
The Pardeys and Hiscocks are some examples of couples who long term cruised on 30 footers. Done it myself and can say its not for everyone. Even the best of relationships will find it hard at times with the lack of privacy.

However, with the smaller boat you also enjoy many advantages such as less costs in moorage, haulouts, and maintainance supplies such as paint. Bigger boats means larger, more expensive parts. Its a trade-off.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
What looks very big to begin with, quickly becomes very small in the course of every day living on a sailboat. You need elbow room and a little privacy at times, and plenty of storage. With each foot in length, that adds a lot of cubic area inside of a boat. Outbound 44 is a nice modern design and a Mason 43 would do fine. As a minimum, I would not suggest anything below 40 feet for a couple who want to cruise long term. Certainly we have plenty of friends who have sailed across many oceans and around the world on the 36-38 foot boats. You have to live with what you leave on. Here is a link which shows some doable boats: https://www.sailboat-cruising.com/cruising-yachts-40.html

When you're on the hard, do you still live on the boat or do you need to find local accommodation?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
We are comfortable living on the boat. Only once, in Cartagena, Colombia, did we not live on the boat, while hauled. But at the haul out facility they had a tiny room to live in just behind the boat. With all the interior sanding of the floors and painting the inside of the water tanks with toxic paint, not even cockroaches wanted to live on the boat.

Thanks again for an excellent video. Are there good websites where a person can get information on marinas/boat yards etc.?
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
From Rebecca, since that is her department:

1. My first reference is http://www.noonsite.com, go to Countries, and then you can double down on the area you are heading to.
I usually make pages and pages of PDFs from those pages so I can reference when I am arriving, before we have internet.

2.Then I google for blogs...and search on YouTube...

3. In Navionics there is Active Captain and Community Edits, and that can often have information and links about many places too. I will often copy and paste info from the above blogs in to specific waypoints right in Navionics.

4.I often use a paper cruising guide, and write many notes in it from the various sources too. Often cruising guides are a little dated by the time you are using them, but they provide a nice way to organize your information from many different sources, and it’s nice to just have it all on paper.
5. And of course there is usually a Facebook group for every area sailors could think about going to, and I join those ahead of time, search them, and keep an eye on postings on there too...

So many ideas of places to gather info ;) I’m sure I have forgotten things if anyone wants to add...

Andrew, For years, I have been wanting to take care of those resin blisters above the water line. From the water line down, 19 years ago, it had been pealed and reglasses. I saw blisters developing there again so wanted to grind in and see what was happening. In the next video, I will explain about this era of boat and how the resin blisters came about. The weather is cool and the labor is reasonable here in Africa so it is a good place to do boat work. All this is to get ready to cross the Atlantic and head far south into South America. Thanks for your tip!!

Hi Mr. Patrick !
Excellent instructional video !
Question for you Sir , what kind of camera do you use for the videos ? They looking so great !!!
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
Van, Thanks for watching, again, and for your newest comment. I have been using a GoPro 5 and 7 plus a Canon 7d mk2. I need new lenses for the Canon as what I have is a "kit" 18-135 and I can see, at times, a bit of distortion. So I try to use the 17-40 whenever possible. As I gain more experience with video editing, I have been taking more time to color correct or enhance the footage. This video editing is very time consuming and it seems, always more to learn.....or try to remember how to do a particular process again.

If we should sell the boat in the next 10 years, I don't want any degradation in the price because of some resin blisters. The biggest reason is the upcoming ocean crossing and adventure we are planning.

Liked the video before the add was over because I know the content will be good.
I'm part time crew on Britican and helped in the haul out last year and will be helping them again this year.
Britican is an Oyster 56 so it's pretty big and before hauling out there is, like you showed in this video, a lot of square meters of space to clean.
They also do full service on everything that needs servicing.

+Patrick Childress Sailing Yes sir your right in the maintenance department, but with a bit of diligence and a good mind set it is manageable.
And the space on the boat makes up for it.

Wow, thats a lot of work to haul out. Glad you had that board to protect the fenders. Its hard to have everything you need in all situations. Even if I had all the stuff, Id prolly loose them in the boat somewhere. Good job yall.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
There are a few places I would do this work. Cartagena, Colombia, Latoka, Fiji, and here in Africa. Labor rates is the big thing. There are a couple haul out places in Malaysia that could also work. At Vuda Point marina, in Latoka Fiji, when we were there, the boat yard set a top limit of $10 a day a boat owner was allowed to pay their unskilled, personally hired, help. they did not want a teen age helper taking home more money than their father from his job in the city. The economy in most foreign countries is far different than California, union wages. However, because of import duties, materials and especially tools can cost double.
Patrick Childress Sailing
Patrick Childress Sailing - 4 years ago
This is Rebecca... More expensive to haul, less expensive to store, overall about the same...Patrick does most of the work himself but if he can get help for a reasonable price, he will hire a helper to help with the dirty work...or to make something go quicker. Thanks for the question...and for watching!
