So understanding the limitations to the repair you describe, is there a way to use a substance like tar and light plywood as a patch? I have never tried tar or duct tape on wet surface.

The second problem would be to heel the boat that far. Then the hole was under the battery box. I had very limited access to the hole. I removed the box and batteries on the hard in about 4 hours. Along with trying to keep ahead of the water intrusion, it seems to be a losing battle. I understand there may be no choice, there are a lot of places on this boat where I would have even less access to a hole.

I just bought a Morgan 416 ketch that had a hole punched in the hull by a pile during Hurricane Sandy. I was thinking about how your example would apply in this situation. The hole was on the aft end of the engine about three feet from keel. My first thought was how to hold a sail or mattress to the hull over the hole. Seems I would have to use rope to hold it in place, but since the area is recessed from a line from the side of the hull to the keel, I don't see it staying in place.
