I thought that you had a dishwasher. Too much hard work!
Also this must be specific to your boat or maybe sail boats in general. I have never ever heard of all these problems on a motor boat.
I have been looking at a certain Nordhavn 120 and I have been through stuff pretty thoroughly and Ok know that dirty water etc is removed by contractor but what you're describing to do, ERM no. And I like my power shower to much to.

So your galley drain goes to the bilge relying on the bilge pump not directly overboard? i can see why you'd not want anything getting in the bilge you don't want that pump blocking up but what a pita the way you have to do dishes. If it cant go directly via a through hull why not install a small Grey water tank with a macerating jabsco pump out.

Why don’t you just pump grey water overboard instead of the bilge. Our sink drains directly overboard with a valve on it to close if a heal allows it to flow back in.

Some Amel owners have made this change.

Ken awesome comment on the bilge pump anti-siphon... but you may want to clarify that the exit pipe needs to be underwater for the siphon function to work. Most boats have it way up on the topsides so no problem unless the boat is very badly heeled over but I still think that you may just have saved a boat an ignominious fate. Goes to show that we need to be very careful when we make modifications to the original design - even inadvertently. I don't think I've seen many other boats with bilge pump anti-siphons and indeed many marine store bilge pump kits don't come with them and don't even suggest it could be a problem (other than saying to mount the exit hole high... but I can see owners thinking they don't want crap staining they topsides and putting it down near the waterline inadvertently.).

One other comment, on a recent Super Maramu I sailed on, they used a 6" deep plastic bin (like the ones kindergarten kids use to store their crafts in) in the sink as it nearly fit the contours of the port side sink and made it sort of impossible to rinse stuff off outside of the bowl accidentally. It was also stiff enough that it was easy to carry up the companionway to throw over. It was still a two stage operation like you do... once to get off the bulk, the second time to use soap and do the final clean (when dishes are very dirty). They used the starboard side sink to rinse off the soap and drip dry. Worked well. I love these videos. Keep them up!

First boat I've seen where the sink and shower drain into the bilge.

@theislandpackrat There is no difference for the ocean at the end of the day... the difference is in the bilge. If you stop any organics going into the bilge, it stays clean and not stinky. Although on the Amel's the bilge is actually in a water tight engine room, it still is no fun to clean out a bilge that has all kinds of food bits. Most Amelians either use paper towels to completely clean the dishes or some system like Ken. It's a bit of a PITA to carry the container up the companionway and then throw it over the side, but once you clean the bilge once the other way, you never complain about it again!

OK so whats the difference if you dump the bowl of dish water overboard or thru a drain? It's still going into the water. And washing the deck down with soapy water or your soapy shower water. So many go the bathroom in a bucket then dump it. Up here Victoria BC the whole city dumps into the ocean. I can see it in a small inlet but not out where it's deep.

It's actually a good feature although it can be a PITA. The reason it is a good feature is that you aren't filling your tiny black water holding compartments with grey water dramatically extending your times between pump outs. Of course while you are well offshore in the ocean it doesn't matter as you could dump over and not use up any holding tank space at all but in anchorages or marinas (or usually within the maritime exclusion zone), there are regulations forbidding the dumping of black water so that means an expensive pump out (if you can even get one). Extending the time between pump outs (or holding tank dumps) is well worth the PITA caused by having to keep your bilges clean (which makes the boat smell better anyway).

it's true that most boats are set up different than an Amel, but the reason for this is to limit the number of holes in the boat.

Thanks for the video. Is that an Amel shower hose/spray gun you used for to fill the head or another brand? If other brand do you know what brand? Seems much nicer than the piece of junk on my boat!

I really like the shower head. I'll have to look at the make, the one in the other shower is different and lower quality

@Sailing Aquarius Around The World I don't think so Ken as none of the SM's I've sailed on or toured (and I've been on probably 15 of them) have that one. Anyway, that stuff is stock standard plumbing stuff so nothing "marine" about it and you can get one to suit your preference.

The shower head was on Aquarius we bought her. But I think it is Amel
