We used to argue that the mating pair had to have very similar DNA, & an identical number of pairing chromosomes, else conception was impossible or early miscarriage was inevitable.
Some argue viruses are not 'alive' because they cannot produce additional viral (self) particles without the use of host cellular machinery. Whether that defines 'life' is debated.
But one would be hard pressed to argue that a Liger is not alive simply because they are CURRENTLY sterile.
If the geography and personalities allowed for billions of years of relatively frequent "Tiger & lion interaction," and therefore: Ligers breeding in the wild, and if evolution provided a niche where Ligers could sufficiently outcompete tigers & lions, (perhaps becoming better pack elephant hunters), the rate of genetic mutation would have a good chance of creating fertile Ligers that would become their own species.
Now, regarding whale sharks and great whites forming megalodon, such a scenario might be on a scale comparable to the potential of (if not greater than) "Lion X Tiger = Sabre tooth tiger/ puma/ bobcat" etc.
However, the world's oceans provide far more long term, unristricted access (outside of food, climate etc).
I don't know enough about megalodon to know for certain. But IF megalodon is an ancestor of the great white, then it's incredibly likely that they have very similar DNA, and - while the following is nothing more than a random example as I lack any knowledge of the specifics of the genetics of either animal - if such is the case, then (while time has almost certainly granted an enormous opportunity for a plethora of mutations since the time when the species shared a common ancestor and/or diverged etc, we also [infer that we] know that very little has changed in the genetic makeup of the great white over time.
To simplify my point with a very basic example, under the pretences that the above is true, it could very easily be as simple as the large prey of megalodon became insufficient and a "size-limiting" Gene was turned on - resulting in the smaller great white - which was able to outcompete the sharks that lacked, or failed to activate, the size limiting Gene.
An animal like the whale shark, or even the blue whale for that matter - any animal that wasn't reliant on whatever food source happened to depart - could have kept their size and as such, if scientists were able to identify the specifics, it's not even slightly illogical to think that megalodon could be "re-created"
Again, this is an incredibly simplified idea as the reality of the specifics are far beyond the scope of my knowledge.

I don't suppose you have got the original source handy for your claim? You seem to be referring to a dating of two fossilized megalodon teeth from the HMS Challenger Expedition (1872–76) that was undertaken by Tschernezky in 1959. _.I dont accept the philosophy that a monstrous creature exists at the unreachable parts of the ocean that humans cant go to, due to immense pressure that can kill nearly everything...but the monster is an exception and lives there anyways because you cant prove that it doesnt.. The Kraken lives there too and I'm also looking forward to seeing that when its discovered.
