The small baby sharks are afraid of humans and swim away when you get to close. Even adult Black tip reef sharks are no threat to swimmers. In fact, no shark attacks have been recorded in the Maldives ever.

The bigger sharks are in the deeper part but they dont bite at all dont worry. The big ones are the WHITE TIP sharks. They are harmless and you can freely snorkel without any problem. I Sent you an email!

The title is backwards, it wasn't the sharks attacking, it was the sharks being attacked by a pod of porpoises that were herding (or schooling) towards the shore in order catch and kill them. (Porpoises are a type of miniature Dolphin). Those were baby sharks (with a black tip on their dorsal fins) that will grow up to become a threat to the porpoises; besides that, young shark is a good source of food for sea mammals. And big sharks, like the Great White Shark,, are a good source of food for the biggest dolphin, the killer whale.

My wife and I arrived in Vilamendhoo on the 6th May '17 and had the most amazing 14 days there. We saw these sharks in abundance and the amazing thing is they don't touch humans!! We stood and watched a guy standing in the shallows with approx 15 sharks swimming all around him yet they never touched him. He was braver than I was!! They see another fish though and boooom!! It's dead.

I remember Allison Teal from the show Naked and Afraid show swam to her rescue boat at the end of the 21 day challenge. It looked to me that she covered a distance of one mile in that same water. How in the hell did she not get attacked. Checkout the episode and you'll see what I'm referring to.

There are several lightning fast strikes by them with bait scattering into the air. The sharks aren’t as deep as the Trevally so can get the bait fish in much shallower water. The Heron is not at any real risk and knows it! The sharks are concentrating on the bait fish also. The mouth on a shark is underneath and I doubt in shallow water they could grab the Herons legs even if they tried.

For me it seems as the big fish (snapper?) and the sharks are hunting together the small ones.
The sharks are small enough to get near to the beach and cut off this escape route but a few went trough and the heron was able to catch some while the big fish close the way to escape in deeper water.

Are black tips sharks just comes in these bite size or theres the 14ft version?

Hi Mitt. Most black tip sharks average size is up to 3 to 5 feet. The 13 feet sharks are the white tip and can be found lurking in deep water! Its totally safe to snorkel with the black tip sharks. Its an awesome experience!

I believe the bird saw a productive but risky feeding strategy. Bigger fish ( small sharks) driving each other AND small possibly injured fish within range of the birds striking beak. Just move along quickly & " watch out" for your legs!

Great video. My wife and I went to the Maldives in Nov/ Dec this year. Velassaru . We also saw a lot of these Black Tip Sharks hunting for the small fish/ fry just off the shore. The Maldives are just how you see it, beautiful!... We hope to go back in January or February 19. When the locals say is a good time to go for the weather.

bluefairyuk , you should go to maldives! Its totally safe to swim with the black tip sharks. It may look scary but they dont bite at all. When you snorkel, its an exciting feeling. Its totally safe to snorkel in maldives along with the sharks 100%.
