Kommandant Franz - Yes, zuma back in 1969 was great,,,, it was the 60’s and lots of pretty girls,,,,, as today there often were big heavy sets rolling in after a storm and I remember feeling if I was gliding in slow motion when body surfing , wearing my duck feet fins…… it seemed like several seconds ride…. Would leave the water, lie on my towel and stick my hands into the warm sand and close my eyes…. Back then you could sleep on the beach.... not legal but no one would bother you and would wake up before the crowds and find spare change dredged up by the machine preparing the beach…. Would pay for the hot fogs from the food stand…… there was also no paved road along the beach to point dune so could go down there and spend the night in peace….. often partying with beach babe friends….. damn….. nice being 16and 17!

Ugliest big wave on the planet in freezing water. They should call it nightmare instead of mavericks.

Michael Escamilla Steamers was always too crowded but I scored really good Mitchell’s a few times, and Bridges. I’m a wave pig and don’t like crowds so most of my surfing when I lived there in the early 80’s was north of town at Davenport, Waddell, Scott’s and Ano. I still surf a lot but sure don’t miss the cold water up there.

+867 5309 I am an EASTSIEEDE boy from the 90's! Good times surfing two-six, WindandSea and Sandollar with the crew. I was always the last guy out of the water and the boys would already be downing 40's by the time I got out at 10:am! Ahh... Yeah, Mav's, in my opinion, is messy at anything under 15'. Not worth a paddle out. Thing is.. This place is so compressed. The waves hit this shelf and BAM! Next thing you know, you are getting pushed through the boneyard if you fuck up. That is what makes this wave a force to be reckoned with. No room to screw up. To be clear.. I do NOT surf Mav's. I can report on what I have witnessed. I was surfing big Lane and Mitchell's Cove when I was young. That was just before Mav's broke in terms of media. I just don't surf enough anymore to not be a danger to the serious people out there.

Michael Escamilla I lived in Santa Cruz in the early 80’s before word of Mavs and I never saw anything breaking there when blasting through Half Moon Bay. What’s the minimum size for Mavericks to break? I’m curious because Dans Surf Videos channel uploaded a super cool video recently of guys surfing small Waimea at a size I didn’t know Waimea would even break.

867 5309 not that part of the ledge. A little further around the boneyard to the south/toward the harbor entrance, there is at times a very rideable shoulder that is softer. I have often wondered about surfing it with a stubbier board because it looks very fun. I have seen paddleboarders and kayakers hit it at times and even somebody on a hydrofoil. What is cool is that on a minus tide day, the reef in the lagoon is exposed and one can walk right out to the boneyard barrier. If you ever get a chance to visit, come at a zero or minus tide time. Really beautiful.

A separate section known as “Zone 5” covers a smaller swath of the ocean where the Mavericks surf contest is held and is noted as a “conditional winter zone” meaning Jet Skis and other similar craft are permitted in that zone for a designated time of year.

endwido Why should it matter the contests are run by entirely different groups and it is not like any of the surfers would be surfing both events. And it is not like the swell was epic at Pipe and should of waited for a bigger swell, but Mavericks does not get this big all that often and likely won’t this year, so another year and no Mavericks surf contest.

Lol. They were actually predicting very strong south winds that would've made incontestable conditions. However, the south winds didn't end updeveloping till the late evening hours.
