Is there a reason you don't put your plants into the pond in the pots? What is the advantage/dis-advantage of keeping them in the pots?

How does the filtration work? the plants take nutrients of the water so algae wont have them?

I was reading that ponds needed a deep end of 3ft to keep things alive during winter. I live in MD which is a 7 on the hardiness zone and was wondering your thoughts. Really like your vids btw.

+Cody Kile I think 3' is a good depth for you to consider. A little deeper would be even better!

need quick advice bro,i have moss rock, that was the cheapest rock i could afford, its the red colored rock with well moss growing on it,is this algae ? because i have it in the water and I've got a small pond thats at the end of my property that has tons of tadpoles in it,and i was thinking about getting some and putting them in my pond i built,it still has mosquito larvae in it,and then theres the moss growing on the sides of rocks, will this be a food supply for the tadpoles,my four frogs living in the pond must be gay haha nothing from them yet,at night i turn on a light to attract bugs also.and too the small pond will be drying up soon and don't want those to die at the natural pond.any advice dude, thanks
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 8 years ago
+onewheelup I'm sure the tadpoles will forage in the moss but the moss on the rock that grows above water level will likely die when you put it below water level. We want moss that develops and grows below water level for the tadpoles. Definitely add some mosquito fish! Thanks for watching!

hey bud, update i now have 4 or 5 frogs, yep.im fortunate enough to live in a national forest here in tx,but droughts have taken tolls, thats why the pond to put back ya know,so the mosquitoes i take a net and clean them out daily,i stopped at the lake and got some floating plants with wicked roots,i need to find name to show you,and the frogs are just some chorus frogs I'm after toads, the screech owls ate all mine,so i fixed them, yea haha heres something cool i did too,i have well water so i took a water hose with a adjustable nozzle turned it to a spray mist, got a 16 ft ladder and ran it up a tree, mounted it and waalaa instant rain, they smell it and come running, plus it keeps plants damp.oh and the ole lady bought a tiny fish tank pump its just enough to make ripples to piss off mosquitoes, and i mounted a blue neon light in the trees close by,so dude its rocking and I'm only getting started,i will look up those plants and write back.peace dude

man i need some help,i made mine, its 6 foot by 6 foot i put rocks around the edges and some sand stone hanging over covering the tarp,i haven't got any plants yet,and I'm waiting to see where the sun light is going to be located over my pond when the sun is in its summer setting,i put it in a real low laying area and it does have trees over it that I'm going to cut limbs off to give it more sun light but as of now i have MOSQUITOES dude, now one end is fairly deep,16 inches for the frogs to dive down when snakes are a threat,i have tons of them,so my question is should i get a small pump for the deep end,or try and find some kind of fish like the blue eyes that won't eat the tad poles.please help asap.im going down the rd to the lake to get plants,i already have that iris in my yard, haha guess i will dig it up today.thanks man.

+onewheelup You need to put some mosquito fish in the frog pond to manage the larva! Keep me posted.

Love the series. We are making a family project of building a pond like your as a Christmas present for my 6 year old grandson. Can you tell me the brand of pump you used so I can try and find one? Happy Holidays!

is it just me or does it seem like almost all the pond has been filled with rocks?  this would not work well in TN;  too shallow in summer and it would freeze solid in winter.

Won't the mosquito lay their larva in the pond. Are mosquito dunks safe for frogs?
ThePondDigger
ThePondDigger - 9 years ago
+Matthew Szwagulinski We put mosquito fish in the pond. I am not certain if the mosquito dunks are safe for frogs. I would like to think so but please double check.

Great video, Eric! I've been waiting a while for a wildlife-oriented pond! I would use native plants, because those are the plants that will attract the insects for them to eat.

Enjoy the videos, keep them coming! As a landscaper by trade I always love to see others work. I built a pond in my backyard several years back and really enjoy the fish I have, and especially the frogs that it has attracted.

Hey pondigger i really want to build a small pond in my backyard/garden. Ive been looking at pondkits and they are very expensive so i was curious if i could buy underlayment/liner and the laguna powerjet 960 fountain pump kit. Would the laguna act as a filter. too becuase i do not want to make a waterfall and i dont think i would need a skimmer. Ive done research but need some expert advice thanks!

great, i have a pond working now, and goldfish seems to eat most of toad and frog jungler population, so mayi i build somthing like these, dosent seem so complicated as pond, especialy wisout any cabling and filtration. for flor i presume 0,25mm liner is enought?

I finished rebuilding my pond after something chewed through my liner in 4 spots .I dug it out and it is now 10x20 and almost all 4 feet deep .With a small waterfall pond about 4 ft wide by 2 ft by 8 inches deep .Used 1 of your ideas for that so I could clean the water with lots of plants in it ,so thank you  .No easy task though when it is clay soil .Your welcome and every one on my pond forum sight wait for your new video's to come out .
