Superbrand "Magic Mix" Surfboard review by Noel Salas Ep. 32

The Superbrand "Magic Mix" is a legit everyday driver and I really enjoyed this board. It has the speed in the small waves and felt solid under my feet in waves well over head. I think this board is very versatile and surfs exactly like Superbrand describes on their website. he "Magic Mix" is a mix between The Toy (small wave Groveler) and the Vapors model (Daily Driver) which is the perfect balance between the two for a wave range of 2-6. Here is what the Superbrand website has to say about the Magic Mix; Aptly named, the Magic Mix is a blend of all the magic elements that go into some of our most popular boards. Super versatile, the Magic Mix excels in surf from knee high to overhead and burgers to barrels. Developed in Coolangatta, Australia and tested throughout the world, the Magic Mix is sure to be your day-to-day go to surfboard. • A “magic mix” between the popular Vapors and Toy models • Slight width in the nose makes for increased paddling power • Single to double concave bottom with flat tail for performance in myriad conditions • Medium rocker throughout with a late flip in the nose for tight pocket surfing • Tri fin setup with rounded squash tail • Medium, forgiving rails • 4-ounce bottom, 5-ounce deck lightweight glassing available

Hi there, how do you compare the magic mix and the air17x? Im looking for an everyday board (easier to surf than a very hpsb) to sit right above my sampler for the 3- 6 foot range. thanks!!

Slokie Slok Air17X is hands down better. More HP but takes a little more skill.

Can you give me some info on Superbrand Mad Cat model? I wonder if there is too muck nose rocker...Im looking for a suitable board for a surftrip but that feels forgiving and good as well at my everyday home beachbreak surf (Brazil). Im thinking about CI B&W or maybe even Pyzel's Ghost. Maybe you can do a good review about that board someday! Thanks a lot, love your reviews!

Antonio Zanoli Sorry I don’t know anything about the Mad Cat. I recommend the Phantom by Pyzel. For your trip and home break. The Ghost will go good on your trip but too much for your home break. Cheers

Hi from Spain and congratulation for your interesting surfboard reviews. I've also seen your review about the HS Holy Grail surfboard and now I'd like to know your personal preference and comparison between the MagixMix and HolyGrail in order to purchase the most suitable board for me. Thanks in advance

Gonzalo Galindo Ramírez Yeeew... stoked you like our show!!! These two boards are both built for 2-6’ surf and they are both epic. The Holy Grail for me has a bit more speed and smoother rail to rail in comparison to the MM. the HG really suits my surfing in the pocket and I found it to very versatile. The MM by Super Brand is solid and surfed really well for me too but the HG was one of my favorites for 2017. Cheers

Hamish Dobson I would say get this board in the same liters as the board you ride for waves in the 1-6’ range. It paddles good and has good speed too.

Just bought this board today and can’t wait to get it in the water! I’m 5’11” 190lbs and have been surfing Sharp Eye SB-1’s and Disco’s in the 30 liter range. Decided to change things up with my daily driver by having a little more beef in the board. Went with the 6’1” model which has 32.6 liters. I’m a bit nervous about the 20” width but I a have other boards for those really good days. I surf the reef and beach breaks in La Jolla and plan on using this board on those fatter, bumpier days which we seem to have had so much of lately.

ok so picked my board up on Friday. ive been surfing since 1984 and have had a lot of boards. This magic mix is by far the most responsive and easiest paddling board Ive ever owned. Catching waves are a breeze and after takeoff it almost knows what your planning and sets it up for you. If your older like me, 50, and still want to shred, or if you want volume without losing manuverability. Trust me this is it. Im not a kid anymore but Saturday morning i sure felt like one.

Thinking maybe a Magic mix in custom 5'10 19 1/4 2 3/8... I'm 6 foot and 150lbs... I also think I should drop some width like you suggested and add some length to increase volume (I like around 27 to 28 L).... I've been loving my 5'7 19 1/2 2 5/16 28L neckbeard but I want a smaller tail and tighter turns..... We also surf shitty weak 3-8ft windswell in Texas so do you think this would be best? or would a CI Sampler be better with the flatter rocker in the front (that's the only huge difference I see).. thanks
Trey Wiese
Trey Wiese - 6 years ago
I appreciate the feedback, I am going to go with the (5'9) (19 1/4) (2 3/8) get rid of 1/4 on the width... excited to see what I can do with more rocker and smaller tail in some little steeper days. Thank you for the review Noel
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
trey surf I think the 5'10 is still a little long compared to your 5'7". For the size surf and type of wave I would want the board to be super responsive and still have good float. Maybe go 5'9" and make the volume work but try not to go too wide.

The Sampler is epic but it doesn't have the tail rocker like the Magic Mix for tight pocket surfing. I think the Sampler will be better in 1-3+ but when the waves get 3-8 you are going to want the rocker for traction and performance.

Been really digging all of your videos! Super informative and it's even better when we get to see the board in action. Maybe when the Fall starts, we could see some more reviews of high-performance boards and step-ups for bigger/steeper days? Maybe it can be an excuse for you to fly to some tropical reefs to test out some high performance equipment! Or come up to SF and test out some step-ups at 8' OB

Currently I have the Magic Mix in 5'8" the slimmer stock dims so 25.8L and I weight 142lbs. Probably average skill level with around 5 years surfing exp, been working on connecting my turns and having better flow. I'm really liking this board. I feel like it's pretty much made for someone around my level. A HPSB for newbies of HPSBs. Ride it at blacks beach all the time and have taken it to Trestles before. I pretty much agree with everything Noel says except I don't think I would make it less narrow. The board is meant to be more wide and carvy in my opinion. Or if I did make it more narrow I wouldn't take off so much. After a large handful of sessions I've decided this that it's a bit big for me, I don't need all that volume for width. The volume is really well distributed on it so it almost feels more than 26L. I find myself having to inch forward sometimes like widening my stance in order to have more control of the nose. Gana try out the 5'7" Magic mix tomorrow thanks to a Superbrand demo going on locally... Thinking about the 5'6" model as well, unfortunately no demo version on that, but feel like that might take some of the versatility out... Will report back.... Ain't it great to live SoCal.

Took out the 5'7" magic mix to blacks today, 4 ft set waves non set waves around 3 ft. Had a blast! In terms of float and paddle I didn't notice much of a difference between 25.8L and 25.2L, was still able to catch any wave I wanted. I did notice much better turning. Turns were more quick and at no point did I feel the board was too big. Making me think I could probably get away with the 5'6" at 24.3L, but little worried that will take some versatility out of the board. Overall love the board, had one of my best sessions with it today. I think this board is great for someone trying to progressive, learning to link their turn, etc. And if you size down like for someone 140lbs the 5'6" would totally shred if you have the skills. One of the best if not the best all arounder I've ridden. I like it more than the Lost rocket and Lost Quiver Killer. I think this feel much more like a normal shortboard and to me is pretty much a HPSSB, high performance stubby shortboard.

Will try to compare it to my Super Siamese Palm Viper 5'8" next.

Hi Noel, stoked you are doing superbrand reviews; I love their boards. The Spam is so fun! how would you compare this to a new flyer? I know the concaves are a tad different, but sounds like the outline and rocker profiles are very similar...
Surf n Show Reviews
Surf n Show Reviews - 6 years ago
Johnny Ferreira Stoked you like the show and the Magic Mix felt really good in the waves I got for this review.

The Magic Mix had a bit more speed compared to the NF. This is because of the rocker, like you said they are a little different.

I really like the NF in a swallow tail. I find the NF to be for waves more in the 3-6+ because of the rocker.
