When this came out, it was during the infancy of viral videos (I was in high school or college at the time) and my friends and I just figured it was real. Why would someone cgi a video like this? To be fair, the version that was going around at the time didn't have the quicksilver logo at the end so we had no idea it was a commercial.

@oyra123 buddy, you don't have to be a genius to know that there is only one key factor in this "myth" which determines if its fake or not, and that's the power of the explosion. In real life three sticks of dynamite barley made a ripple on the surface, so it doesn't matter what the conditions of the experiment were. you are never going to get any kind of significant wave from such a small blast. so next time, why don't you use a little bit of common sense before you start stating such bull shit

Hello, people! Mythbusters is entertainment, not science. Although they don´t succeed in their experiments, does not mean it is impossible. I don´t know whether the dynamite surfing is real or not, but the Mythbusters should at least use the same conditions as the guys in the video. This is another example of typical American inaccuracy.

Is fake. Just Google Fake-surfer-ad-nets-millions-web-hits, explains everything. The plume did not look convincing to me, and there's no way that much TNT or C4 could generate such a blast.

THIS IS NOT FAKE, MYTHBUSTERS IS FAIL. Mythbouthers used a river where the depth is constant. A wave increases its amplitude as the depth decreases and speeds up due to conservation of mass. Hence there is more extractable energy on the surface and the wave can be utilised by the surfer. Furthermore this unstable amplitude from a transition to a shallower region will cause the wave to break. This myth has been poorly tested by not varying the depth of the water as the wave formed.

The explosion is very real (Notice how the cars behind starts their alarms, and the falling water) and the reason the waves appear is beacuse of the low water and unability for the energy to fade)

@thecastman97 Correction: Attempted busted by Mythbuster. Problem is Mythbuster tested it in a 10 metre deep lake - the waters in Copenhagen don't go over your waist. The intense shockwave from the dynamite combined with the small area the water's pressed in and the high sides = waves)

This video is a commercial not an attempt to fake an explosion. My friend made the explosion on computer for the company Reset Film. The video is not from Amsterdam, but in the very centre of Copenhagen in Denmark. The explosion is taken from another place, and then edited to fit into the lake called "Sortedamssø" in Danish. I think it was made for Quicksilver surfing gear. :-)

Uh uh. Not enough dynamite, and the wave at the top doesn't really work at all. Easier to make a wave maybe, but explosives don't make a wave that works like an ocean one. Plus, even 250 pounds of dynamite making an explosion that big cant make waves that high!!

lol very fake just watch the transition between the canal footage and the surf, also the camera does a fake bobble when the explosion goes off, its an old corny post production trick, also the waves appear to break on some sort of shoreline...which would be improbable since this is supposedly some sort of man made canal, the waves in reality would slosh against the walls...besides anyone who's ever gone fishing with dynamite know that anything alive in that water would be killed by the shockwave

You can get delay elements that continue to burn when submerged in water, they bring their own oxidiser so if they're suitably wrapped, that'll work just fine. It's the size of the wave for the explosive mass that's implausible, and that's before I saw the Mythbusters experiment.

And the mythbusters did try this out in a 45f deep lake. This one in copenhagen is 6-9f deep. So the effect of the dynamite is not anything near the same as it would be if the mythbusters tried it in CPH

This is a commercial for Quicksilver, shot in Copenhagen. The police is eager to get to know if this is real or not, but Quicksilver keeps the secret for themselves. If it's real they're going to be fined bigtime and some of the people participating in this stunt will be sentenced to jail for sure. But on the other hand, if it's fake it's very bad publicity. Anyhow - it's a sweet movie, would love to see more of this kind in the future ;-)

Fake. Mythbusters recreated it with 200 lbs of TNT set 12 feet below surface and it created a wave maby 1 foot high and it disipated very fast. Impossible to surf from.

The water going up during the explosion looks a bit computer-animated. And a water-riple from a explosion is like a circle. The wave th guy is on comes from another angle / point. Only thing that makes me wonder are the 2 cars in the back wich the alarm goes off. Just check the lights flashing. So it must be a explosion with lot's of pressure....

No Matt, it's just really nicely done. It's easy to cover seams with low bitrate video-- as long as you get the angles, light, and motion right, you can composite anything and it looks great. Note the "shaky cam" effect when the explosion hits-- it's zoomed in and out, then tilted, all in post.

It's not real... Sorry, but it was in magazines and so on here in Denmark. This was in Copenhagen. They're where doing this on a pond called Blackpond hehe. No reports were even phoned in about this. You can also see some wird effects in the middle of the watercloud ½ sec after it goes off.

Some fuses do burn in water! and the explosion was real, you can see that by looking at the cars in the background, their alarms have been set off due to the shockwave so we at least know that the explosion was real, as for the rest!
