About 8 months or so. I made a lot of changes, so some plants are closer to a year old, but others are only 6-8 months old. This scape went through a lot of changes.

Dominik Ortiz yeah no worries. You just want to make sure you have consistency with your dosing and husbandry. That video I mentioned can do a better job explaining it, haha. It just takes practice and patience. You may need higher light or lower light depending on plant types and if you are doing low tech or high tech.

The first video is called, " new nature aquarium" showing how I first set it up, and the second video is called, " rescaping your established aquascape" check my video list for both videos. I made adjustments throughout the process of this scape, such as adding in more sand up front. Those two videos should give you some ideas.

HOw to you get that thread leaf java so compact?

needle leaf gets longer. True thread leaf stays compact. This is true thread leaf. Only gets to 5-6" long max. You always want to trim abnormally long leaves on any plant to make it even more compact.

Beginner question: What happens in a beautiful, mature tank like this when some of the plants start to get too big? I'm sure it would be possible to trim some of them, but do you ever end up having to take a plant out? If so, how does that impact the overall design scheme? Thanks again for putting all this info up.

yeah it would. Sometimes tanks can get past their prime for a bit and you may have to trim a certain plant way back to get the scape back on track, or how it used to look in its prime. This would be a second life, or stage for the scape. At this point some people just rescape, or used the same hardscape and soil, so they don't have to move anything around and then add new different types of plants.

+elvisaquarium Thanks, yeah it is thread leaf java, actually different than needle leaf, it doesn't get quite as long. It stays around 5-6" per leaf. Nice and compact. Amano really loved to use it in his tanks.

+edimilson cerino I am using AquaticLife Halo LEDs right now, the tank in the video I was using a T5HO 3x 54 watt retro hanging kit. I do dose liquid fertilizers to the water, and I use a mix of DIY solutions and Seachem AquaVitro bottles. I only dose minimal amounts and do not follow the EI Method dosing. There is really no need to overdose tons of fertilizers to the water column. It is better in my opinion to do a dosing method closer to the PPS-Pro dosing method.

Beautiful tank. I'd love to have my java ferns tight and bushy like that. It seems that almost half of them(the bottom portion) are completely shaded by being next to eachother. This doesn't negatively affect them? I always thought too much shading in the bottom portions of plants caused them to die.

+JClaude Moran I was continually plucking leaves that were either too long, unhealthy, or being shaded, or old. You just have to perform weekly maintenance to get them bushy, and if any have algae get rid of them. Also get rid of any leaves that are sprouting new ferns from the leaf.

+Paul Roadz I am using an API Filstar 2x canister filter. It is cheap, and gets the job done. I have used more expensive filters of all kinds and the best in my opinion is the cheap API Filstar, or even the SunSun canister filters. The hardware was taken out for the video. thanks for watching.

+ApocalypticStorms That is the genre name of the aquascape style. I do have a lot of snails in this tank. Tons of mini ramshorn snails that really keep my tank clean. Sometimes I may get Nematodes too, but haven't for a while. I also have a lot of different kinds of oddball fish, and I love them all!
And I do have algae. All tanks have algae. Actually in nature the less algae a water way has the healthier it is. There are two main things that dictate a water way with low algae growth, low turbidity, and high O2. They are macrophytes (aquatic plants) and a healthy bacteria bed. A lot of algae and snails in a water way is not healthy. It is out of balance. And will usually suffer from low O2 (hypoxia), high turbidity, high algae growth, low bacteria beds and low plant mass because of lower O2 levels, and lower available light because of turbidity. This condition is called Eutrophication.

Having seen is huge 40 meter aquascape in person a month ago i can assure when it comes to lush and healthy plants the man is the best.
All i kept wondering was, so much trouble i get keeping my plants healthy in a small glasa box,this guy does amazing plants in a tank way bigger than my house.
I was amazed and felt theres so much i dont know on how to grow plants.

+Aquamaniac Thanks man, it is so true. The goal is to get good at both. Some guys create these amazing scapes, but often times have poor plant growth. But even Amano said that it is not about the plant growth it is about the design, which I actually DO NOT agree with. To me you have to get the plant growth down in order to create a good design. The IAPLC winner from 2014 had horrible plant growth. LOL

Also IMO, even being a nature tank, a large school of a small fish. 30-35 Celestial Danio comes to mind and wouldn't distract from the plants, which is clearly the main focus. Beautiful tank either way.

+NeoMinerva Check out Takashi Amanos nature aquarium in his home. He has tons of different kinds of fish and some are oddballs. He only has a few Rummynose here and there. This is how a home aquarium should be IMO.

At what point can I see the utah native. Also, where is this Rotala Ceylon? I see a plant the resembles Hygrophila Polysprema "Ceylon", but that would be a federal offense of have purchased and for your friend to have sold. Possibly for you to own...if you are in the states. That would explain it's rarity.

The tank go three week with the same problem(white water) and I do the procedure of the 25% water out put the bacteria liquid and right know the filters are dirty and I dont know what to do.

Okay, it could be bacteria from an excess of DOC, basically too many organics and or nutrients in the water or it could be high phosphates. You'll need to get your phosphates checked, and if they are low than you may need to get better or bigger filtration. You can also try adding more media to your filter to help the biofilm grow. And reduce feedings as well.

Hi, I need to know if u can help me with my 125 gl tank because look cloudy and I clean up I take out a 25% of water and next week do the same thing and do all test (amonnia,ph etc..)and everything its ok and I dont know what more to do. Plus I went to petshop to do a test to water and nothing happend with it..

How do your larger fish do with your shrimp and baby shrimp? I am about to get some blue panda shrimp and fantasy shrimp for my tank and would like to add in green neon tetras. On average of a female has a clutch of eggs of let's say 50, how many of the baby's would you say get picked out? My tank is going to be high tech co2 wth medium light around 60par and will be pretty stuffed with plants and a large peace of driftwood with holes all in it.

+Trey L Well my Amanos don't produce in fresh water so no babies, but the green fire tetras are always trying to eat the eggs off of their underside, so I imagine that even small fish would eat the shrimp if given a chance. I do have neon tetras with cherry shrimp and they do not seem to bother the little shrimps. Hope this helped. Peace

It doesnt really look like that in the video anymoere though, I have temple and microsword in it now but id like the microsword to grow good but it hasn't yet cause I left it on the fibery matt it used to be on until recent. I have 3 current usa led lights on my cube but my middle one is 18 to 24 and my others are 36 48 so im thinking of replacing the middle with a kessil AW150E. U think that would be good enough to have decent growth for the microaword in that deep of atank? My d Sag is good

Meaning my moderate foreground plants don't grow as good atm, but adding another strong light fixture will raise the intensity to higherlight and it will start to grow better ?

How do you keep algie under control and what kind of fert dosing do you do?

+theo1965stang As the plants mature the algae will disappear, as long as you are consistent. What matters more than anything is consistency. I actually do very lean dosing to the water column and use a mix of DIY fert solutions that are in EI method concentrations and I have some Seachem Aquavitro bottles as well. You could say it is like PPS-Pro or ADA dosing, but it is really just tailored for this tank. I would recommend, no matter what path you take, to keep doing the same thing every week, which should include pruning and trimming, replanting, etc... Just treat it like a garden, even if you are hesitant tor replant or trim plants, do it anyway and they will grow back healthier. As well you must always have a low KH if you want to have dense lush growth. Also have a clean up crew of shrimp and snails really does make a difference in my experience. I would highly recommend getting some rams horn snails, and maybe one assassin snail once their colony grows, just to keep them in check.

Still doing lower high light, lower CO2, and minimal water column dosing. Still high tech, but not as extreme as some people run their tanks, and the plants are thriving. Peace! Damn, my wrist hurts.

+KrispyAquascape BML will work, I should get some too. Finnex Ray 2s work. Just that T5s have better color and for tanks with dark spots like my scape they will penetrate better. BML at one point was going to let me try some, but I haven't heard back from them.

Have you considered the Build my LED Dutch XB? A 48" is only around $300 or so. I'm planning on switching over to this light when I run out of T5 bulbs. I hope that it can grow plants as well as the T's though. I'm not too sure about it but read upon many great reviews. $1000 could definitely get a decent set up running lol

+KrispyAquascape Yeah man, just for the video. I run only 2x 54 watt T5HO., 2bps CO2, and minimal water column dosing. Still high tech, but not as extreme as others run their high techs. I would switch to LED, but they are all so much and the cheap ones suck ass. The Current and Ecoxotics barely get the job done, Kessil would be great, but I ain't spending a $1,000 on lighting, which is what I would have to spend for my 40 breeder.

+jeremiemcd Thanks man, yes I love the ferns too, it is actually thread leaf java fern, the difference being that thread leaves only get to be around 5" long on average, so it stays compact naturally. Great plant and you can get it from Han's aquatics.
