You have done a wonderful aquascape. Now I realize why my 55 gal. looked so boring. My 55 gal. is being emptied and cleaned today and restarting with new fish. I would love to create something similar to this lovely setup. I have to ask though, how do you vacuum the bottom when you do a water change?
Linda Deal
Linda Deal - 9 years ago
+TeamLead.ie Thank you for the information. I use snails and Corys for most of the tank maintenance. I'll work on getting the filter to do like you say. I had large fish in the 55, but this time I'm going with fish which will be 3.5" or less when full grown. Did you cycle this tank before adding the fish? I never did before, but am trying it now. If nothing else, it gives me more time to plan. Again, thanks for your help.
AquariumBros!
AquariumBros! - 9 years ago
+Linda Deal Thanks Linda! Please send us a video or picture of your finished tank. When it comes to cleaning the bottom there are specific tools that can do it for you but to be honest I don't use any. I would not do a full water change ever because there is a whole live culture in the tank once its been set up for a while (vacuuming is your own choice but you will generally be told you need to by those who sell the vacuums!). So I would only drop the water 10% or 20% at a time and refill and not disturb the bottom at all. I have, and would recommend having fish like Pleco's that clean the tank for you in a natural way rather than doing any damage myself. The closer you can get to creating a natural environment the better (and less work) it is. My filter is aimed in a way that creates a flow so it feels more like a river bed, etc. so nothing really hits the bottom and stays there to rot. If you have a smaller tank I would recommend smaller fish like tetras or something similar so that 1) the tank looks bigger & more is going on inside and 2) your fish will have a larger environment to live in.

That`s not a new trick, it`s nearly as old as the aquaristic itself. You can see in many videos or read in many papers, books, instructions, flyers or even on some sand/gravel packages that you should put a small plate, dish or the cover of a plastic bucket (gravel or substrate is available in plastic buckets) onto the sand/gravel or cover the whole ground carefully with several layers of paper towels (no toilet paper, it dissolves!!) and fill in the water quite slowly to avoid the aquarium water from getting murky or ruin the whole scape. Use a hose if possible - maybe with a simple spray nozzle (garden tool). If you can place a bucket or a laundry basket (without holes of course) obove the AQ level you can use a hose as well or use a clean watering can with a spout to fill in the water slowly or just use a new (not the used one from your kitchen) Polypropylene measuring jug with handle (buy a small and a big one, mark them and use them only for AQ water) and let the water flow slowly into your open hand just obove the ground. Sometimes it´s as simple as that ;-) Many videos about how to build an aquascape are showing it all quite well.
 Cheers!

I found mine at my local pet store I've also found driftwood at other pet stores.  If you can't find it where you live or you don't have a petstore near you. I hope you can find a good cheap peace on Amazon. :) ♡

I will give Amazon a go but shipping costs to my country are normally prohibitive for heavy items - plus I will probably have to pay import duty since I live in a VAT free zone (and unfortunately as far as I know Amazon doesn't do VAT free sales?).

Ebay is less trustworthy - I've tried to get things delivered before - sometimes they turn up, sometimes they don't... I suspect some of the stuff ends up sitting in customs for a while and then goes back without ever reaching me :S

Properly cured / treated driftwood is safe and actually recommended with all soft water fish (most tetras, South American Cichlids, West African Cichlids, many "blackwater" Asian rasboras etc.). It helps to keep the water soft and acidic by leaching tannins over time.

You can use it with other freshwater fish that like harder water as long as you maintain the GH and KH at appropriate values - it takes time for the tannins to lower pH so it won't crash overnight the pH of a tank with high KH (such as an African rift lake tank or similar). You just need to do regular (weekly) water changes with the appropriate levels of buffers / salts and it should be fine.

I don't know whether it's safe to use with reef tanks or not - my inclination would be to leave it out of a saltwater tank because it's uncommon to find a lot of driftwood near a reef (correct me if I'm wrong?).
Maybe it could work in a mangrove type set up (brackish?) or a sea-grass / macro-algae saltwater tank? That's something to research I guess :)

+TheGLNProject I don't really know mutch about fish, but is driftwood safe with all fish or gust fresh water or somthing?

You're lucky :)
Its a pain to order things into my country since it's VAT free and a lot of companies won't / don't deliver here... Our fish shops probably don't get a lot of choice with their suppliers. That said, I can ask them to call me if they ever get in something like that piece :)

I wanted to do something similar to you regarding standing a piece on it's end to look like a submerged trunk with roots - when you've finished it remember to upload a video so we can all see how it looks :)
AquariumBros!
AquariumBros! - 9 years ago
+Serene Gaming I'm re-doing the tank soon, I'm gonna stand the piece up, it stands naturally but looks like a tree stump that fish can swim under. The problem is it looks great from any angle so I can't choose which one. My local pet store ordered the piece for me, I sent a pic of something I like to the store and they forwarded it to the wholesaler I guess

I have some bits of driftwood (some from shops, some from the river) but none of them as pretty as that... My shop never gets in rooty twisty pieces like that... I've asked and they've requested them from their supplier but the supplier mostly sends flat pieces of Mopani wood... My best bet is to find some out in the woods by the river - I'll keep looking!

Co2 is not needed unless its a heavy planted tank , this is not . They will get all the firts they need from the fish waste + plants give of oxygen with light and co2 when lights are off , although what they give off will be used quickly when lights go back on , they will still get some co2 . I would of painted the back of the tank black rather than bits of tape , and pre-soaked the root before putting it in . But all in all , not a bad job .

I'm not so sure if it's the right exact plant but I think it's a Frill, or a Egeria Densa. I mostly think it's a Egeria Densa, I have that exact same plant and it's BEAUTIFUL. For some reason the plant keeps disappearing, after every water change, now I only have one stem of it. Hoped that helped.

Well Jack Dempsey's are a South American Cichlid, and while still can be aggressive, are not notorious for being completely incompatible with any other kind of fish like African Cichlids are. As long as the other fish aren't nice and bite sized, you might get away with a Jack Dempsey. But that is not the case with Africans.

You have to do it very fast, the plants will dry up. You can use a spray bottle to keep the plants moist

Nice tank! how do you clean it? I mean the gravel and sand, how do you siphon it? I suppose you don't take everything out or move everything... but I guess the siphon process should damage the image and the design you have created, so you do you clean it without changing anything? Thanks!

how big of a bottle for a 20 gallon aquarium??depends on type/quantity of plants?
AquariumBros!
AquariumBros! - 11 years ago
About a month. to correct myself, the CO2 wont pour out it will begin to generate and be pushed through the hose with the build up of pressure inside the bottle

how long does the wine bottle mixture last?
AquariumBros!
AquariumBros! - 11 years ago
No algae problem, I have a CO2 system. Its cheap n easy. U can make ur own with a wine bottle and air pipe. Just pour sugar into it for a few inches then a third as much yeast. pour in warm water almost to the top, stuff the hose in and seal off so no air gets in. shake it up a bit and the CO2 will come pouring out into the tank.

A little cloudy. The filters are just the usual juwel filters, the pads are at least 4 to 5 years old. Unless your pads are ripped apart there is no need to change them ever. Only advice i can give you is dont disturb the substrate when filling. Maybe the water where you are is quiet cloudy, and only visible when in large volumes.

I think it is savannah and it does in fact float. I tied it to a rock to weigh it down, and its also wedged in by the glass. It hasn't become waterlogged yet either. Thanks, appreciate it

What sort of driftwood have you used in this vid. Looks like savannah but I was told that it would float for months before getting water logged. Lovely tank looks incredible nice work.

Just some hard plastic. Not flexible at all. Try to get longer pieces to get deeper into the substrate for more support
