Aquascaping - Aquarium Ideas from Aquatics Live 2011, part 2

FACEBOOK: http://www.facebook.com/DefiniteAquascapeTV YOUTUBE: http://www.youtube.com/DefiniteAquascapeTV PAGE: http://definiteaquascape.tv Second part of a more detailed report from Aquatics Live 2011 - an aquarium show organized on 19-20th November in the Olympia 2 hall in London. I present aquariums displayed at the booths of pet supplies companies, mostly of aquarium trade. The first one is BiOrb, a manufacturer of plastic aquariums and fishbowls. Each BiOrb tank has air-driven small sponge filter, and LED lighting installed in the hood. However, in my opinion these "aquariums" have nothing to do with real fishkeeping hobby - they are designed mostly for people who think aquarium is just another "furniture", and that it is enough to put some plastic, kitsch-like plants or "hardcorals" inside, and stock it with several tropical fish, the more bizzare the better (albino tiger barbs, glowing danios or other similar "artificial" fish, or, even worse - goldfish, which require far bigger tanks for thir well-being), to make it look good. Luckily, it was only one booth with such "rarities" at the show. The second booth presented in the video is the booth of Aquatic Design Centre. There are two beautiful planted aquariums here, both arranged in "nature aquarium" style. The first planted tank was a large cube aquarium, illuminated by powerful metal-halide HQI lamp. The decoration was a long fragment of driftwood, sticking above the water surface. There were some Bromelias attached to the above-water part. Underwater the driftwood was plantd with numerous clumps of Microsorum pteropus and Lomariopsis fern. The bottom was covered with moss. Tropical fish in this aquarium were Celebes Rainbow fish Marosatherina ladigesi, as well as Oryzias woworae and Crossocheilus siamensis. The second aquarium at the booth of ADC was a conventional shaped tank (I mean, not a cube), with ADA Solar HQI-based aquarium lighting. It was stocked with Paracheirodon simulans and Electric Blue Rams. Layout was of the type "two hills separated by a clear path", the bigger one being on the left side of the aquarium. Both hills were based on stones with interesting texture. Plants in this aquarium were mostly Eleocharis, corkscrew Vallisneria, and Anubias. Of course, in both aquariums CO2 was injected by ceramic diffusers, and large external canister filters were used. The third booth belonged to JBL company, there were two nice planted aquariums displayed there. The first aquarium was a small tank, stocked with colorful, blue variety of fancy guppies, with aquatic plants being mostly Anubias, Mayaca fluviatilis, Hemnianthus sp. and Microsorum attached to the Epaqmat by SonGrow. Aquarium was illuminated by single compact fluorescent lamp, and there was internal filtere here. The second aquarium had an unusual shape, as it was high, long, but narrow. One could look inside the aquarium through circular openings in the cabinet, which was also covering the walls of the aquarium. Main tropical fish were Rummy-Nose Tetras. As for aquatic plants, there were several different species used, like Microsorum narrow and Windelov, Cryptocoryne balansae, large Anubias, Echinodorus, Alternathera reinecki, and some other, smaller plants. No CO2 was added in both JBL's aquariums.

Beautiful tanks indeed. However, I get a feeling that several of those tanks are dangerously overcrowded with fish and may not be viable in the long run. Are they overloaded just for the show or is this intended as a permanent setup?

Biorb?? Sorry but for me this is a freaking waster of money. Imagine they're selling it in australia for 300$?!?! wtf. You can buy wayyy better or build yourself and save you 200 dollars than this gimmicky ad.

+SleightofHand Petkeeping? How taugh you this?I had experiences with almost all type of pets and none aren't expensive as fish.A statement a week ago was that fish were the cheapest pets you can have.Wrong only with swordtails;guppies and danios will work that tag.Build a planted tank and the price is enourmous:800$£.

Agreed, those BiOrbs suck. From down under we don't want that shit, either get yourself a proper tank or dont keep fish. Aquariums arent furniture, its a hobby/petkeeping just like how you would keep and
care for your dog or cat.

It is a sort of bromelia, that's for sure. You can send an email to Aquatic Design Centre and ask them yourself! :)

The song is called "Catcher" and is available from royalty-free.tv . Do you do some aquascaping already? If you want to become a world renown aquascaper then it's better to start ASAP... :)

This is my dream to become a world renown aquascapist and aquarist. Like the magnificent Takashi Amano from Japan and like many others. Hey BTW what is the name of the soundtrack your using on the vid?

Does anyone know what that huge emersed plant that looks like a bromeliad is? And whether that's a viable set up at home?
DefiniteAquascapeTV

Actually, most of these "Biorbs" are indeed too small for fish. But I'm affraid people are keeping fish in them, with all these plastic plants and corals... To provide fish good conditions in such tank one has to be an experienced fishkeeper - but most people who buy Biorbs are total beginners...

You do realize that these are prep for shows right? It is unlikely that the tanks are kept that way permanently, but you can keep on hating since you seem to enjoy trying to find fault with everything. Also fish eat and crap in the same water they live in in nature. Stop trying to apply your affectations to an area where it is unwarranted. If the parameters are good it means that the wastes have been neutralized, or do you think the ware conditions are good magically?

Hehe, I always keep asking the same question - why don't you guys organize an event like this by yourselves? I bet there are numerous fishkeepers in Philadelphia (if I understand the abbreviation correctly :) ), so it's just a matter of finding some guys interested in doing this event, and carry on with it. I can give you advice on this, as I participated in many similar events here in Poland :)

Lots of people, actually :/ It was very surprising for me how low is the awareness in the UK of what is the aquarium, and how it should look like. They don't mind these artificial setups, they don't think about an aquarium as an "ecosystem", a small fragment of nature. But this situation is changing, luckily :) Besides, it's not only UK where people would gladly buy Biorbs...

Heavy over crowding in most of these tanks. People don't realize that these animals need a bit more space. They do eat, swim, and sleep in the same water they shit in.regardless if parameters are good

Hehe, I was exactliy thinking about something like this. Because I really want a nice planted tank, but I have no ideas. And everytime when I arrange my ideas (in case I got some) it looks horrible. So yes, I will try. But it will be in one year or something, because here in Poland I don't have the possibility to get a tank. You will see :) And I'm also looking forward to more inspiration from more vids from you! :)

Wingei's are also cool. I have some raw recordings of nano tanks with them, but still not enough time to edit this stuff :/ Hey, tell you what - how about you arrange your new aquarium basing on some of the tanks I filmed (over 100 videos now, plenty to choose from ;) ), record a short video of this tank, upload it to your channel, and post it here as a video comment? Or maybe post it as a comment to the video you used as inspiration...? Just an idea... :)

Hihi. I had a 54l tank with guppies two years... It was so beautiful, because I had a lot of young fish and so on :) I loved them. But I think I will try now anything else. Or Poecilia wingei, also some species of guppies :)
