Collecting Wild Manzanita Wood For Your Aquascape | Aquascaping

In this video I show you how to collect manzanita wood and rocks for your hardscape. If you like in an area with Ponderosa pine trees you may be able to fine some manzanita wood for your aquascape. I am going to be aquascaping the ADA 60P with this wood and rocks. It will be a bucephalandra heavy tank. Will use hygrophila pinnatifida, sawtooth, Belem hair grass, Anubias, bucephalandra etc... Some native plants are protected by California law. Important California laws for native plant protection are the California Endangered Species Act (CESA), the Native Plant Protection Act (NPPA), the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), the Natural Community Conservation Planning Act (NCCPA), the California Desert Native Plants Act (CDNPA), and California Penal Code Section 384a.

ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Christina Holland All true, but you can still get a special use permit from the forest service. Manzanita is not regulated in Utah, and can collect for commercial use. Also, many hobbyists sell Manzanita out of California. Are you an environmental manager or earth sciencist by chance? It sounds like maybe you are. I would assume manzanita isn't much of a concern in California. Just have to call the forest service and find out.

I just find rocks that look good and use them. Unless you are using limestone or something with pyrite, I wouldn't worry about any rocks changing water parameters. Muriatic acid is just a waste of time.
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Pray4Mojo ? How so. People use it to acid wash the rocks. Makes them darker in color if high in carbonate- for aesthetic reasons. You can't always tell the calcite concentration just from looking at it bro

Very very tempting indeed! Yeah, little tanks are mostly what I have room for, got a 55 and a couple of ponds out in the garden. Nothing too extravagant

ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
matthew smith I don't like nano tanks anymore. Haha. 10 gallons is as low as I will go. Dude! I swear we always need teachers. Maybe look into it. Park City starts out at $50K US. And if you are willing to work on an Indigenous reservation in Kanab, Utah they will pay $80K, but is usually in the middle of a rural area. I swear we are having a teacher shortage in Utah. Look into it.

If you ever get desperate for maths teachers over there! Yeah, the evaporation really isnt a myth. Constant water changes to keep uo with it on my little walstad shrimp bowl. I planted a small vase up and had similar issues

matthew smith Thanks man, yeah it is very pretty in Utah, but the culture needs some changes. Come live here to help it out. Haha. Am planning on designing the hardscape today and it will be a part of the setup video. I may do some bog plant vivarium with my ADA 45F. It just has so much evaporation I hate scaping the tank. Really hard to take care of so right now it is just sitting empty.

I don't think we have Manzanita here in Australia. How can you tell what kinds of wood are safe?
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
DMAN D near creeks is a good area. The bank of a creek. Because exposed roots have already been exposed to water and air, so if they are still solid after all that exposure and not rotten than those are the pieces you want to get

Be careful, at least in S. Cal, it's illegal to collect manzanita wood on federal/state land. Check with your local Forestry Office for the exact rules and regulations, lest you get hit with a hefty fine.

I live in northern New Mexico and I was wondering if dead sagebrush would be ok in my aquarium...there are some of the the coolest wood pieces I have ever seen and would look so sweet in my nano tank. Any thoughts would be very appreciated. I have access to the best black lava rock too here, it is all along the Rio Grande River...every size you could image, some wore down really smooth right at the river's edge. My idea for gravel is using ant piles here on the mesa where all the sage is...they make these piles of the perfect size gravel (1-3mm) any where from 1-3 feet tall.
Sean Meister
Sean Meister - 7 years ago
thanks...yeah, that is what I was thinking about the sage too...I may still give it a try...not sure yet...but the ant pile 'gravel' is going to be perfect! I will keep you posted. thanks a bunch.
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Sean Meister haha, funny thing is I have always wanted to try ant sand as well. Ha. Sage brush may not be as good of an option long term because it isn't as dense and more loose fibers. If you find a really fresh dense strong piece I am sure it could work before it rots. Even Manzanita will degrade after a few years of use

Andrew K Yeah Oregon has and is a big part of my life. A bunch of my family lives there and is from Oregon. My great grandfather was one of the earliest Appaloosa breeders, and he dealt directly with the Native Tribes dealing with Appaloosa ponies. And I am closely related to the first mayor of Portland. O'Bryant square in Portland is named after him. That is my last name. O'Bryant square is now where the homeless hangout. Been to Seaside, Astoria, Indian beach, Cannon beach, Portland, Salem, Coos Bay, and others dozens of times throughout my life. I guess I could move there. Maybe Medford or something. Usually go surfing, crabbing, go up the column in Astoria, etc... You know the drill. I remember once going to Powell's bookstore in Portland. Largest bookstore in America, right? I thought it was odd that they had the human mutilation section right next to the Jazz music section. Let alone the fact that they had a real human mutilation section with real authentic mutilation pictures. It was pretty intense. Went to the Omni science center, and also we would always go to Marsha's Museum in Long Beach Washington right over the Astoria bridge. You know Marsha's Museum by chance?
