their behavior is fine! And are just swimming in the high current. These fish are extremely healthy man and not stressed at all. I don't see what you are talking about? This is an aquatic life halo LED, set at 50% of full power!

Hey Dave,

asking here because you removed a video of yours. The one you created a low tech tank with white sand, a 45 mins video i think. I used to show this to some friends new to the hobby, since it was amazing. Is there a reason you removed it and will it come back? I would really be happy, love the scape you did there.

Have a nice day.
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
yes, I have a better video coming. I just did a rescape of the ADA 45F and used driftwood etc... it is a lot better scape and overall video in my opinion. I made a mistake with the other scape and did not rinse the sand from a previous setup. The tank became septic and released tons of ammonia, so I had to rescape. This time I did a shallow sand bed with driftwood and planted moss and anubias along with Buces onto the driftwood. May still get some shell dwellers, or something else. I did the rescape yesterday, so stay tuned for the video. Just have to wait for all of the driftwood to saturate and sink into its proper place.

Hi! I have a question about something. Do you know anything about using well water for aquariums? I supply my own house with well water (it's very hard water according to my test strips) and I use a water softener for my sinks, showers, etc. For the longest time, I've been afraid to use the softened water so instead I use straight well water. This becomes a very big hassle for water changes. I have to fill up ~20 gallon jugs well before the scheduled water change because I need them to sit in the house to get to a higher temperature (well water is very cold). I then siphon out the water into a large container, manage to dump it in the bathtub, then haul up the jugs to fill the tank back up. Now, I've just seen a 50ft Python siphon and that looks like it would give me a much easier time. But all the examples I've seen show it being used with typical tap water and treating it with Prime. So, would I be able to do the same? Need different treatments to my tap water instead of Prime? Thank you!
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
you would be better off using the well water than the softened house water because of residual sodium in the softened water. Plants don't like the higher sodium. You can treat the well water just the same as tap water. Use the conditioner if you'd like. I usually just use the water without conditioner and have no issues really. But it could help.

It was just my old CO2 line. I am not using it right now and cut it and capped it with super glue. It is connected to my inline CO2 diffuser, but this tank is low-tech, so I am not using CO2 at the moment.

jonnyboy5050 - 7 years ago
do you dose fertilizers into the water column? and do you run Co2? I'm getting good ready to set up a 75gal and still need to decide on substrate and plants. I'll be using either granite (I live in NH) or Dragon stone for hardscape. not sure about driftwood.
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
I am dosing liquid ferts to the water column. Tank is low-tech, so no CO2. Use a bicarbonate buffer for a source of carbon for the plants as well as potassium, and of course for stability.

How do you determine how high to mount that type of light?
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Anything over 50 PAR is considered high light, but on the low end. 100 PAR would be typical high light. PAR measurements are taken from the light source to the lowest point of the substrate- in distance. So 70 PAR at 21" would be high light for example.
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Usually with the PAR charts provided by the manufacturer and type of tank- low tech or high tech, experience with certain plant types, and can also purchase your own PAR meter if you want.

Very nice setup. I am curious where did you get your driftwood twigs from? Also you mentioned the dhg is mini. Is that the sp belem or parvula?
Robert Brown
Robert Brown - 7 years ago
Hey if you get a chance, take a look at the picture of Eleocharis acicularis 'mini' on Tropica's site. I'd be curious to know if you think it might be the same as what you got.
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Robert Brown actually now that I am looking at my mini the new growth is starting to curve downward just like my old Belem, so it probably is Belem.
Robert Brown
Robert Brown - 7 years ago
Yes Belem was discovered by Tom Barr. As the story goes he supposedly
gave a sample to Tropica. The one one they list on their site now as
mini is listed as "Eleocharis acicularis 'mini'. They say it grows to about 1.9 inches max. So I am not sure if it is Belem or not. How tall does the mini get?
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
It seems like there is. At first I thought it was Belem, but my Belem was different from Mini, and other hobbyists seem to think that they are different as well. I think Belem was discovered by Tom Barr, but not Mini.
Robert Brown
Robert Brown - 7 years ago
Nice deal! Didn't realize there where actually 3 different DHG. Learn something new. Thanks.
ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Actually, It isn't either one. Mini is different from Belem. The Belem grass tends to curve downward, and is even smaller than the Mini. I actually got a grab bag kind of thing from my LFS. They just had a box full of old broken branches, so they gave it to me for $5. haha score!

Actually it is good that he kept the hardware in. For a newbie as I am, it is pretty much missleading to see such beautiful aquascape wihtout all that hardware necccessary to maintain its true beauty. When I saw some Greenmashine LTD vids without the hardware I though "oh that's great I can achieve such success without all that pesky expensive hardware if I really know what to do." I was so wrong I know. So I am happy that ADU Aquascaping put's even a newbie into the right line showing that the hardware is sort of neccessary to maintain such beautifuly scaped tank.

ADU Aquascaping
ADU Aquascaping - 7 years ago
Justin Loitz in the video yes, but when taking a photo the proportions match better. Large rocks and wood up front and the skinny scale of trees makes them appear farther away. The illusion works better in a photo than on video if that makes sense.
Justin Loitz
Justin Loitz - 7 years ago
actually think its the scale thats makes them look off like you have driftwood in the creek portion that is much larger then your moss trees which would indicate them as imitating scrub which there just 2 vibrant for
