Fluval Edge 12 Gallon Aquarium Review / Filter Mod / Iwagumi Aquascape

Here is a different type of video than what I usually post, but it is about another passion of mine, aquariums! I decided I wanted to delve into live plants and do an iwagumi style aquascape. I decided on a fluval edge 12 gallon since I like the clean edges on this, and did some mods to the filter to increase circulation and flow rate. Enjoy!

Where did you get the tube?

I bought it at a pet store that specializes in salt water fish. You should be able to find one at a place like that

Hello! Nice set up and btw your daughter is ADORABLE! Just wondering where can I buy the tubing you used to lengthen the intake on my current filter and where did you also purchase the larger impeller? Thx...

Sherrie Teller thanks! The upgrade on the filter was necessary in my opinion. My tank gets superb circulation now

Sherrie Teller thanks! The larger impeller was found right on Amazon. Just search the model number you see in this video and you will find it. I think it cost me about $6-7. As far as the tube goes, I usually see them at Fish stores that specialize in Salt Water aquariums. The size that I noted in this video is the perfect size. Good luck!

Cute "scuse me" :). And very nice review. After some months, are you still happy with this tank ? I'm about to buy it, it's just the size of the opening on the top, that bothers me a little. I guess it's easier on the 6 gallons version, right ?

G Bo thanks for watching. For me I love the look of the tank. The clean edges and hidden filter/wires etc. the small opening is a bit of a pain but the trade off is worth it for me. I've been a Fluval edge owner for 8 years. Maintenance is still pretty easy. Because of the plants I don't need to vacuum the gravel. So that helps. For a great video about maintenance for this tank, please search the YouTube user Pecktec "fluval edge maintenance"

nice video! I have the fluval edge 6 gallon and I'm going to redo it and put plants and maybe some driftwood. I have 2 goldfish, a molly, and an African dwarf frog in this tank. Do u have any plant suggestions that don't require that much care? Also, which pet store do you go to?
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
The lighting is not good on the fluval edge tanks. Alot of my plants have died off because of this. I would suggest low light plants like anubias and java fern.

Goldfish can quickly outgrow a small tank like this. So keep an eye out. How is your dwarf frog doing? I never had good luck with dwarf frogs in fluval edges because they can't find to opening up top for air.

Great Video! What plants did you use? Specifically the colored first batch you put in around 11:45?
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
Stephen Cook that would be Alternanthera reineckii 'Mini'. A beautiful plant but it really requires CO2 and powerful lighting to thrive and maintain that beautiful color. I will be posting an update video soon. It has survived but not thrived. The lighting in the fluval edge is quite low and insufficient.

Are you happy with the filter impellar mod? Where did you purchase the impellar? I have the 6 gallon fluval edge and the aquaclear 30 fits it just fine. I purchased the 12 gallon but haven't set it up yet. Thanks for the tube extender idea!

1 question, how do you clean this tank? the opening is so small.
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
Deus Vult it's not terrible. I don't need to vacuum the gravel because I let the live plants suck up all the waste. And I use a magfloat magnet scraper to clean the glass. It takes me about 30 minutes a week to do a cleaning. If you follow Pecktec on YouTube you will find a great fluval edge maintenance video. He employs the same methods as I do

Update video to see how its grown in would be great, i'm considering buying this tank but not sure yet if its too tricky to keep clean from algae/etc.
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
M Lo I already taped footage and am editing it for an update video. As far as maintenance. It does take longer to maintain than traditional tanks. But a magnetic algae scraper will be your best friend. The tank takes me 30 minutes to maintain per week. Not too bad.

Nelsie Rodriguez-Mirabile hmmm. Mine was a 5/8" thin walled tubing. I dunno if that makes a difference. Was a perfect snug fit. This type of tubing is common in saltwater aquarium stores. Let me know if you have any luck. If not I still have some I can send you if you want.

Question: In your media filter you don't add carbon. You don't need it?
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
M.E. Martin when tanks are cycled. Ammonia and nitrite should be ZERO. As they should be in the presence of Nitrate.

Nitrate is safe up to about 40ppm. Mine stays at 10ppm because my live plants eat the nitrate. That's their main source of nutrition. I could probably go several months without water changes if I wanted to. But I do a small 15% change weekly just because.

Thanks for watching!
M.E. Martin
M.E. Martin - 7 years ago
Thanks! I wondered that myself because many add ammonia to speed up the new tank cycling process, but at high levels ammonia is toxic as is Nitrite. Once a tank has cycled the ammonia and nitrite should be minimal, but you should have some nitrate. I was curious on your set up. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
M.E. Martin in my opinion carbon is a waste of money. You have to replace it every 3 weeks. And it actually works against building beneficial bacteria. If you use carbon, it will suck up all the ammonia and the beneficial bacteria will never grow. Read up on the "nitrogen cycle" if you're not familiar with the concept of beneficial bacteria. It's the only way to go. Thanks for watching!!

TDC Nation thanks I appreciate that! I actually already filmed an update video for this fluval edge and will be editing it soon. So subscribe so you can be on the lookout for that. I appreciate the comment, I've been keeping aquariums on and off for most of my life (I'm 33) but live plants were new to me. I've learned a lot in my life but I've also learned a lot about live plants in the last several months. I love new set ups and love making videos about them. But I can't have a house full of fish tanks. Maybe I should set up tanks just for the fun of that and making a video. And then sell the set up to someone. Lol wish I had more time also.

You don't let the water filter for a few days before adding your fish?
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
I didn't show it in this video, but I used some old filter media in the filter that already had a colony of beneficial bacteria from an established tank. So the tank was cycled and ready to go instantly. Plus the plants help and I only added 2 fish. To play it safe I didn't add any more fish until about 30 days after setting this tank up.

You didn't rinse the gravel and you didn't use a tap water conditioner
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
You don't rinse Eco complete gravel because it comes soaked in a liquid that has beneficial bacteria. And yes of course I used water conditioner. I used Seachem Prime.

Hello Incredible..
could u pls suggest which all plants will thrive in this Fluval. i also do have one here in Mumbai India but am struggling with the plantation thing.
also would appreciate if u are adding some fertilzer or CO2 to it.or something else for keeping th3 setup healthy.

+The Incredible Erk ****correction: Problem NOT provoke
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
+Nisar Faroqui my Brazilian pennyworth died because of iron deficient. It's a fast growing plant and those will tell you there's a provoke with ferts quickly. at the time I wasn't adding any fertilizer. I replaced it will cryptocorne retrospiralis which is doing great and started dosing. The alth reineckii mini is usually a high light plant, but it does survive in this set up but is not as red as it used to be but since adding Iron the red is coming back. I think if you want success you have to stick with low light plants: Crypts, Amazon swords, Anubias, Java fern. I took a risk with my plants and they are doing pretty good. But it's not a guarantee. I use Seachem liquid fertilizers: Phosphorus, Potassium, Iron, Excel, and regular flourish and I keep my nitrates steady at around 15ppm.

Do you think the Lilaeopsis mauritiana plants will be survive with this 5 wat light?
The Incredible Erk
The Incredible Erk - 7 years ago
Although this video was just submitted. The footage was recorded over 3 months ago. The Narrow leaf microsword is doing better than just surviving. In fact they have been giving off many runners. My only issue with the plant is that it is difficult to place and keep in the substrate. Especially with the limited access of this aquarium. I made the mistake of trying to plant large clumps instead of smaller portions. Lesson learned.
