Hey Dave - I'm curious what lighting you had on this tank and what the lighting schedule was. I'm trying many of the same plants and trying to get the same colors but have been having issues. I think I have maybe TOO MUCH light for everything else to keep up? 4x24W T5HO (96W total with 2 hour ramp up [48W], 6 hour peak [96W], and 2 hour ramp down [48W]) over a 29g with CO2, EI dosing, etc. I'd love to know what lighting and any other secrets you were using to achieve this awesome tank!

I do have rocks in the scape. They are covered in moss. The one on the right is a rock coming out covered in moss creating that nice overhang. It really is considered a nature aquarium because 2 out of the three depths are nature aquarium style. The foreground carpet and midground-being the rocks. The background is dutch, but only somewhat, it isn't quite as extreme. Overall it is actually a nature/Japanese scape. Amano did scapes like this in the late '80s! lol

thank you so much for this compliment. I am using ahsupply lighting. retro fit fluorescent bulbs. 2-6-10 bulbs are the model. They give off balanced 2000K 6000K and 10000K light. A lot of red and blue.

Once the scape is complete I rip it down! I have to keep being creative and practicing. I don't have time or space for another tank so I just do a new scape. Its good practice and needs to be done. I miss all past scapes, but they will live on through YouTube. lol

haha, thanks! You are probably pissed off that I took it down. I have some never before seen footage of the tank at its full potential that I will upload as a RIP video for the setup. I am already not liking the new scape I just did. I think it is too lame. lol I am seriously considering getting a new 55 gallon with no scratches on it and setting up a Marine aquarium.

No it does fine. Just used dark green thread and eventually the thread just falls apart and you can pull it out from within the moss. Java moss loves to stick to rocks and wood. Just keeping trimming it over and over again and IMO will look just as good as ANY moss. It is probably my favorite moss.

Thanks for the kind words, first off you really want a lot. Somehow, because these two guys have always been about the same size, I lucked out. I had to get rid of all my other rainbows because they were too mean to each other. I had 6. These two were always more mellow. Could be that this species is just more mellow than the others. Honestly I would shoot for at least 7 and only 2 males or maybe even one male. These guys are mean to each other, but they can handle it because of similar size.

Gotta ask, because I'm a fan of this tank and style, how do you find the bosmani rainbows do as just the two males? I'm thinking about doing rainbows of some sort (melitinoma or however you spell it) and orignally wanted to do 6 of a single species, 3:3 ratio or 2:4 ratio, but THEY ARE EXPENSIVE MAN. Do you think it would benefit the fish in terms of behavior keeping them as a group of 6, or do you think just doing 2 or 4 would be fine? Also, congo tetras...so nice....so expensive lol

Thanks man. Wow , thanks for the nice compliment. I should and always want to, but I don't know what I should explain or how to teach it. It is hard for me because I don't really have a method or follow steps I just do it without really thinking about it. What are some Qs you or others would want answered? Or do you have any ideas I could put into the series?

pellets in the substrate while using a good planting substrate like eco-complete I will be able to acheive this goal. I barely do water column dosing as it is...

You don't have to use Aquavitro. You could do it with dry ferts. I just dose so little so it isn't really that expensive and I have gotten better results with Aquavitro combined with slow release pellets in the substrate that I don't want to change it. No sense if it is working, not worth the risk. My plan is to do no liquid dosing even though eventually everyone says you have to even with Aquasoil. I plan on proving them wrong one way or another. I believe with good sustained slow release

I use 100% RO water and dose potassium bicarbonate for my buffer and then light dosing of macros and micros with Aquavitro. I overdose phosphates and underdose nitrogen to get really red growth. I overdose Excel a few times a week and do only 20% weekly water changes (ruffly) which is only 10 gallons. I could do bi-weekly and probably experience no major issues, I don't want to risk it. Slower growth, but more sustained. I don't have to crop like crazy or waste ferts.

They are ahsupply bulbs. Stands for 2000k 6000k 10000k So they give a good amount of red and blues with full spectrum all at once. When you first get them they do put off a pink hue, only for the first 100 hours. All my bulbs are pretty new. Good eye! I don't dose a specific method, I just do what I do. I try to have a lot of nutrients in the substrate through slow release fert pellets and then lightly does Seachem Aquavitro. Not a lot, just enough. I do have a schedule and routine.

It is an F1 wild strain. You can call it a green blotchy, but really it is a wild strain.

Thanks man. Do a rescape if you want. This setup has been a challenge, I kept changing so many things. It is finally balancing out. I don't have any pink bulbs. I think it is from all the red and orange plants and it is reflecting into the lens. I have 2-6-10 bulbs which do give off a good amount of red, so I guess you could say there is more red and blue coming out of the light than a standard T5HO.
