Aquascaping Time lapse of 33 gal

Hey everyone! As some of you may know I wasn't very happy with the layout of the 33 gallon ever since I changed it from the original layout, so I decided to re-do it. Having looked at various aquascape's and reading articles about them I realised that many of them have similar features. I decided to have an archway in the tank as I liked the look of the bog-wood arch in James Findley's aquascape 'Tributary'. I also noticed that many tanks have a clear structure to the plant-line in the back of the tank which I had not previously taken into account. And finally I split the tank up into thirds having the bog-wood in the left of the tank, an empty-ish centre area and some stem plants in the right of the tank concealing the filter and heater. I think it turned out better than I thought but I want to know what you think! :D **DISCLAIMER** I do not consider myself an expert at this and don't claim to be. This video simply shows How I decorated my tank.

It just goes to show that if you get a bit of knowledge under your belt about scaping that you can increase the quality to reasonable or decent from substandard. If I'm being just a bit picky I would remove the large smooth stone for 1 or 2 smaller stones so part of the focal point i.e the bogwood in the tank isn't obscurred however the production and shots from this video are quality also, nice!.

Your not only giving me hints, (but if you look at my pond you can see it is limited in the area that is viewable). I plan to have a bio tank with limited water changes, so heres hoping hehe. I wish I had a tank some times, but the pond fits more with my townhouse and set up of Malaysian and African art/lighting. I think I will play around with plants a little more with variety, however I can't find fish shops with much variety here close by. Keep up the great work, and I love this tank setup.

I did dirt one but it got messy when moving plants around and I had to load it with plants to take the nitrates down. I changed to sand which benefits the cories and I add root tabs to it to fertilize the plants, the results are just as good as dirt.

Hey the tank has plants from all over the world including africa, north america and plants that appear in many areas such as hornwort. your right the fish all originate from south america but that's just a matter of taste. South american fish do like slightly acidic water so I added a piece of bogwood to lower the PH however I also have otto catfish and amana shrinp that are from asia I believe.
TheRossiboy
TheRossiboy - 11 years ago
hey that's called Anubias Barteri an african plant I believe...it doen't need a substrate as it grows on rocks and wood (preferably wood). If you do bury it in the substrate the rhyzome (root) will rot and the plant will die. Nah anubias is an easy to grow plant and doesn't need co2 injection...just low-medium light and liquid fertilisation every now and then.

Hey, I have a question. I recently bought sand to my aquarium. During all previous years I have used gravel. I restarted my aquarium with sand instead of gravel, used less plants, changed the hours of light and now I have cyano bacteria in the tank which I can't get rid off. I know that the change in light and less plants is factors that contribute to more cyano bacteria but my question is. Does the sand also contribute to the growth of cyano bacteria?

Got a question for ya Ross! I got two albino Cory catfish because you recommended them (they are awesome fish) ,but now im wondering...how do you tell the males from the females? I've looked online, and all they give me is the female is bigger. I was wondering if you could make a video about this topic. From the hints online i think i have two males, but i'm not sure. Thanks you for your time.....and merry Christmas.

Hey Ross, I have a question: So I currently have 2-3 inches of regular flourite in my 29, and it works great and i want to keep it but it doesn't highlight the colors of the fish or the plants very well and I want to cap it with something. I would really like a beige colored sand, but it would eventually sink to the bottom. Another option is just a thin layer of black gravel or maybe even black flourite. Any suggestions? Thanks
TheRossiboy
TheRossiboy - 11 years ago
Thanks a lot :) I just left the camera recording while I was scaping the tank however the battery and card space wouldn't allow for a full recording of the whole process so I filmed in chunks which I then put into windows movie maker and simply increased the speed of the clips. It's really easy as there is a tool for it which speeds up the clips 2x the origional.

Hey, I just use seachem fluorish root tabs and bury them next to clusters of plants. I also dose very cheap liquid ferts every once and a while. I also dose liquid carbon daily which combats algae and gives a little carbon to the plants (so i'm told). It's just my wall in the back haha :)

I really like the tank! The scape looks awesome. I think if I set up a planted tank I want to just use flourish root tabs and sand like you are because ultimately dirt is messy and yes it helps but its so messy and sand is just so easy to plant into. Your sand also looks like its really fine grains. What kind is it? I would really like to know.

TheRossiboy
TheRossiboy - 11 years ago
I'm using regular sand, it's inert (doesn't affect water parameters) and is small grained. I use flourish root tabs for plant fertilization. Nah I wouldn't use fluorite again as I learned it didn't offer much fertilization and the grains were actually quite sharp so its not so good for catfish. If I were you I would go with regular sand, its usually cheaper too
