10 gallon multiple community Betta Aquarium tank with two males same tank!

UPDATE: I ended up giving each of them their own tank, and adding some community fish. Yes, this is a 10 gallon tank that has two male Betta fish in the same tank with the help of a nifty divider so they can't attack each other. Both Betta fish were in poor health when I got them, so I skipped the long tank setup that is usually required and put room temperature spring water in and let the fish in a few hours after. Normally you are supposed to wait a lot longer but Betta fish are very strong. It has been about 3 days now and they both are very active and healthy and I plan to learn more about aquariums and introduce some more fish on both sides. This goes out to all aquarium newbies who get lost in the complex process, or who want to have multiple Bettas in one tank. Video was NOT taken with Kyocera Loft phone from virgin mobile. I wish!!!! It is a Panasonic Lumix GH1.

First it is not true that betas survive in shitty water. They live in heavily planted areas which act as natural filters. As to not testing your water is foolish. There is so much information available free of charge via the internet on how to cycle a tank step by step and how to properly care for your beta. There is no excuse to not using this information unless you don't know how to read.

Thank u so much for this video!!! My bettas need a bigger home because a 5 gallon is just too small. But this is perfect!!!!

Wow your betta came in a tank that huge?
Everywhere I find betta being sold they are in 1 litre glass jars.

Where did you find a 10 gallon tank for $17?

+Kat Adams My betta, frogs, bamboo, etc, are all in my 50 gal now, and I got some more frogs to keep the one company
I came home from work one day and found my betta dehydrated on the floor, it's still alive today
I bought the gourami without knowing how aggressive they become but I am now at peace with their future aggression
So my betta will be eaten one day, oh well, at least they live longer than the average pet store betta.
No petstore will allow me to surrender them, they don't take betta back.
My betta is already smaller, but still flares up and scares away the gourami.
I will probably be trying to surrender the gourami or sell them when they get bigger.
I don't really like them, and don't want them competing with my eels or eating my adorable dwarf frogs that everything else gets along with.
Kat Adams
Kat Adams - 8 years ago
+Babby Babbyson Also keep an eye on your gourami. They are territorial the same as Betta's and since they grow relatively large it may eat your Betta (if they are in the same aquarium).

+Babby Babbyson If you think it works that's up to you. But I've been raising Betta for a long time. They need 5 gallons of water to be properly happy. And the frog needs lots of vegetation :) Good luck with them!

Ps: sounds so cute Omgosh

+Kat Adams The betta was sold in a 1 litre glass jar.
This novelty glass is at least 5 liters if not twice that.
Maybe it won't be happy but it will live longer than it would've at the pet store.
It is only the frog now to keep you happy.
I wanted to buy at least 4 of the frogs but the store only had the one poor guy.
I just wanted to get my betta and frog away from my kissing gourami.
They seem so delicate and the kissing gourami kiss everything.

+Babby Babbyson Thats not nearly enough space for either your Betta or the frog. Also, ADF's should be bought in even groups or they become stressed.

Put a curly bamboo in like a straw, some aquatic grass, an african dwarf frog, and betta
Great new piece in my windowsill :))

I found my male crowntail didn't like the 20 gallon I had him in, but he loved it when I downsized him to a 5 gallon. Male Bettas should be in tanks 3-5 gallons, maybe 2.5. I would not put a male Betta in anything under 2.5. But I find all my male Bettas are really happy in their 5 gallon. So they do like a decent sized tank they can swim around in.

I'm getting a betta in a 10 gal with a few African dwarf frogs and I am going to get a couple gallons for a betta I know it's not good to keep them in small tanks but that's what I can afford :)

I know this isn't recent but how did it work out and why did you end up putting them in their own tanks? I have 1 betta right now in a 2.5 gallon tank. I wanted to upgrade to a 5 gallon but someone gave me two 10s free. I wanted to get a divider and I wasn't sure about the filer. I guess you can get different types of dividers. Ones I saw blocked the water to each side.I was going to put lots of plants on the side so they couldn't see each other. But not sure I want to deal with the cleaning. ?

Bettas and goldfish shouldn't be in the same tank..... bettas are tropical fish and goldfish aren't, plus goldfish are messy fish...

Lilwill842 fyi bettas do not live and thrive in mud puddles...second they are not originated from japan, most species are native to thailand.
lilwill842
lilwill842 - 10 years ago
the reason betas are in small tanks is because there used to small tanks or small like water ecosystem there from japan or chine idk but they actually live in mud puddles so to a ten gallon tank theyll like it but will be like uh y am i in a huge tank so its could to see them in a good big tank

Wrong, seeing their own reflection is hardly natural, where in the wild could that possibly happen? And did you know a betta can and will damage their gill structure by being allowed to flare for prolonged periods of time? Not to mention the severe psychological damage. Glad to hear you're moving them to their own tank, but please stop spreading such blatant disinformation.

Though bettas breathe air, they are just like any other tropical fish. A filter is not optional; you also need a heater. If you don't have a filter, the tank's water will become filthy very quickly. If you don't have a heater, the betta will be sluggish and more prone to diseases and have less of an appetite.

@TheCarharttBoy I have had males in the same tank before. They even sell betta tanks designed like that. There is NOTHING wrong with the set up and it is even considered good for them. As long as they cannot make physical contact to fight then they are fine. They will not die. I had a male that lived for 10 years in a set up like this. If you want to pity a betta, pity the ones in something the size of a glass of water... or smaller.
Mike Hatch
Mike Hatch - 12 years ago
I'm confused. I thought the nice benefit of having betta fish was that it is okay to put them in a small bowl? Most peeps think they can do this with a goldfish, but it's really not. They die quickly because of all the waste material they produce. Bettas don't produce a lot of waste. I'm no expert, I'm just getting into them now. One thing that also convinced me that it's okay for a small half gallon fish bowl for bettas is that bettas live in rice paddies... often in puddles. What you say?

@TheCarharttBoy @BlackoutDOTcom I got a book on Betta's and yeah it's even suggested that if you have a single Betta to put a small mirror into the water to get him to flare up. It is very good exercise. After keeping the Betta's like that for a little while they actually start to ignore each other.

@TheCarharttBoy i dont know if you know this....but multiple bettas can live in the same tank without dividers......of course they have to be breeded together and never mixed with females.....people that really like the bettas will go the distance

My Betta came in the equivalent of a clear margarine bowl with a hole in the cover. :/ It sucks when people keep them housed in bowls (no bigger than what they came in) or these "Betta condos" I've been seeing. The males really ARE beautiful fish, and they're very graceful swimmers. Mine stayed hidden behind the water filter, then one day I decided to chase him around the tank (he's in a 2.5 gal). Now he stays in the front and swims around. He loves swimming around the plants. :)

How is this tank going? I'm glad to see that you're going with a larger tank for bettas. They really love the extra room. Did you put a filter on that tank? A filter and a heater would really be to the benefit to any fish you put in there. Also live plants would really help give them cover and make them feel more secure. I would do some serious research before adding tankmates. Most fish that go well with them like neon tetras prefer to school. You'll be dividing them up. just consider it

@TheCarharttBoy both living fine.... I don't know what you are talking about... betas, even if by themselves, fight themselves in the corners of the aquarium they sometimes see their reflection, it's perfectly healthy and natural and they feel 'correct' doing it it's like exercise for them. I am moving them each to their own bigger tank with community fish though.

@sassygirl8324 If you have a big enough tank you can put a divider and they will be fine. It is actually goof for them to fight a little bit now and then if you have a soft divider they really can't hurt each other and it can be quite amusing and they get exercise. Also in a 10 gal tank this gives them much more space, much clearer water, and you can introduce a few other fish on each side (just not more bettas)

@lovetheanime26hoe Well I have the tank on top of my home theater amp which stays on all the time and kind of serves as a make shift heater because the vents under the tank warm it up pretty nicely without boiling the fish. I may just get a heater if I move the tank though.
