I bought my betta a ceramic pot decoration that was smooth to prevent tearing his fins and had plenty of space for him to hide in. Does he use it? Noooo. He hides behind the filter and gives me a heart attack.

I'm thinking about selling my used 1 gallon tank to get a new better tank for my Betta. So which types of tanks do you recommend? I'm looking for something that's under 3 gallons because I don't have a lot of space for a 5 or 4 gallon tank.

While I haven't used too many tanks (just the two types I have), I know Topfin has an affordable 2.5 gallon tank, some in kits and some just the tank. My 3 gallon Tetra could work if surface space is the main issue, because it isn't wide (it's taller than wide) so it doesn't take up much surface space. If height is the issue, I'd suggest a wide but short tank, which I've heard is actually the best shape for a betta tank. I'd try to keep it above 2.5 gallons, which is what most betta keepers call the minimum. Hope this helps a little! :)

They are the Tetra 5 gallon tanks. I got them from Walmart for around $40 CAD.

What plants do you recommend? My tank is about 10ft from a window and my room is pretty dark as it is. I tried jungle val but they keep dying. I'm guessing from not enough light.

Victor Jason Yeung My tank plants do well when they get indirect sunlight from an adjacent window. You may get some algae but I notice the plants seem more robust.

+Victor Jason Yeung My tanks are in relatively low light as well, and my wisteria has been growing wonderfully. Java fern has been doing great too. Another great low light plant is Anubias, but I haven't used it personally. My Vallisneria is also struggling in my lowest-lit tank- it tends to want to go brown. Root tabs and fertilizer is also an option, but I haven't tried them myself Hope this helps a little! :)

Unfortunately, I learned about the hard plastic plants the hard way. My Crowntail Betta, Remy, ripped one of his fin sections off. The plant came out immediately!

I have to betta leaf hamock from zoo med. Heartboy loves it. I just recently got a new betta named King. He is a crowntail male. He is so silly I will be making a video on him today. Also, now I know that heartboy laying on the suction cup to the heater is normal even though he has a betta hammock.

Good to know vid! Just from the manufacturing my ornaments always have some kind of sharp spot, luckily I can just chip it off and then its betta safe.

+ShyerLady Thanks! I've even used sandpaper to smooth out overly textured ornaments, it's works to make the insides of caves much smoother (which usually aren't specifically made betta-proof and therefore have some sharp pieces underneath).

+BetterBetta Of course, it makes sense. Recently one of my bettas had a tiny bit of fin rot, I think it was because of a plastic plant I thought would be safe. (this video made me reconsider) Took it out of the tank, added a little salt for a few days and he's now recovering nicely!

+Voeris Thank you! I have read quite a few times and from different places that torn fins can make your betta more susceptible to it. I suppose it is similar to an open wound being at higher risk for infection.

Nice tips, I was wondering how much swimming room a betta prefers? and point #5 kind of helps with that aspect. Having plants helps with the protected feel, like a territory security blanket.

Awesome video:) I agree with you it is very important for bettas to have some resting place close to the surface ( for example when they are sleeping) , maybe people don't have this component in their tanks, which can cause the fish to get stressed fast
