I'm not very familiar with many fish.. what are those gorgeous red colored fish with yellow tip fins? Rosy barbs? Rainbow fish? They look like huge cloud minnows with superior coloring.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
They're Dension Barbs, they get large and require a minimum tank of 55 gallons. They also need to be kept in groups of 5 or more otherwise they fight like crazy!!

You could be called the “Fish Whisperer”. I think because your tank is large enough and also plenty of room to hide within all the plants. Plus.., I think the older aggressive Betta is realizing.., other females are not a threat. Very very nice.

Hi! You're tank is lovely! I've always really wanted to have a betta sorority tank but have so so many questions even after doing a ton of research and I was wondering if you'd be willing to answer some of my questions?
I would most likely get a 75 gallon tank and what I want to do is have just female bettas and some small cory catfish. I've gotten so many different answers on how many bettas to put in that size a tank, such as some saying no more than 7 ish and others saying 20-30 is better as well as the more the better, though the amount I'd really love would be around 20 bettas and however many corys I can fit with that many bettas.
Also do all the bettas have to be sisters or can it successfully work with non related ones and even different breeds? I'd really love to have all kinds of different breeds if possible as well as colors.
If I put them all in at once as well would it be better to do that with all baby bettas(a few weeks old, the baby's they sell at petco to be specific) or better to make a sorority out of already grown/matured bettas?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
A 75 gallon would be a great size. Ours is a 75 gallon and I wouldn’t add more than 10-15 bettas and 10-15 corys. The bettas ideally need to be young but they don’t need to be from the same source. I wouldn’t get the baby ones from petco they are often sexed wrong. I got a male baby and it turned out to be female.

Hi! I'm thinking about starting a female betta sorority tank in my 55 gallon! I've been keeping bettas for almost a year now I believe, and I have been fascinating about how betta sororities work. Do you have any tips for a first timer?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Minimum 5 females although in a tank that size 10-12 would be a good number and have the tank very heavily planted all the way to the surface.

Hi, can you help me? Your betta aquarium looks like a real success... I have 1 male and 3 females but I'm confused with how to keep their environment. Most posts says bettas need water changes, once a week they often say, but what about your plants? Posts online says they need the "dirt of the tank"... but shouldn't we keep it clean? Lol pls advise!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Most aquariums need water changes once a week of about 25-30%. If you have live plants then you don't need to vacuum the gravel often if at all but you still need to do the water changes.

How do you keep your tanks so pristine? They look so healthy! Do you preform frequent minor water changes?

I got my first beta in early June, he's beautiful! I adore his colors, but I was wondering if you could give me any tips on taking proper care of him. Currently he is in a half gallon tank alone, I change the water every two weeks when I drain half of my 10 gallon. I feed him twice a day. I am hoping to get a bigger tank for him when I get paid but I just want some tips and what not, thank you!

PS just found your channel and am in love! I adore fish haha

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Congratulations on your new betta. If he's in a half gallon I'm assuming there's no filter. If not his water needs to be changed 100% every 2-3 days otherwise his water will be extremely toxic. Im sure he'll be very happy once you get his bigger tank.

My tank has bottom dwellers and a male betta. Had him in a 20gal for 3+ years, he seemed lonely. Never aggressive. always wanted to say hi to the cory catfish and goes down by them. Got him a female, floated her for maybe 30min (I didnt need too) he just swam up to her, was very eager, and seemed happy.
When i let her out, they immidiately started swimming gracefully side by side, and he showed her his nesting area. it was so cute.

However, my tank is low stress and only had the male betta as a free swimming fish, and he has a nice nature. It all depends.

We do but it's not switched on at the moment. Where we live is hot so our house is kept at a constant 78-79f with air con. We have an aqueon 300w heater which is very reliable although its only used for 2-3 months a year.

how much do you feed an baby betta ? just got an marble female crown tail betta after one crushed pellet in morning she gets bloated so easy! any ideas of how to help her she is 1.2inches long. some days only feed two crushed pellets a day if she doesn't get bloated in the tummy. could she be having issues though?
named her aurora, very small bright marble blue and turquoise and white pink body short body fins are growing temp at 77f with heater and daily water changes in temporary tank until can move her to bigger tank. she is changing colors and no fin clamping, fungus or ich or velvet ect she looks good so far had her so far for an week now.

she does have an egg spot so she has the body type of an girl. if she turns into an guy even with the egg spot i don't think aurora would be good to breed if that condition arises later.
donna Jeter

While I was there I inspected their other fish tanks and they had dead
fish in there filters and three fancy gold fish with dropy fins hanging
in the back of tank scared, huddled together, sad looking. Called people over to section that worked in fish section and electronics to to take an look at them and help them over 1hr later still no one.
* I wanted to take them out of that store and go home with the three! Each one was 6-8 inches long at least.
First big aquarium setup to help others :)

*If i had to label an store for poor health and not taking care of fish it be the walmart chain stores with the lack of caring. Sorry for long
comment guys, thinking back on how we found our bettas and where has made me realize just how bad they are treated compared to some places.

Thank you for your quick response, and advice Lifewithpets! :)

I do have few more questions:
Aurora's tank is 3g with an 25w heater inside submersible with thermostats. would it be safe to raise temp to 80f in an 3g tank for her?

I do plan on getting dividers haven't found an deal yet on cost and shipping. I have looked at your site on dividers not sure on shipping of what it would be? The state i'm in is Florida where i'm at, for location wise.

I need to buy two dividers like the ones you use. since I got one tank cycling currently i'm planning to buy another 10g tank setup so the girls be in divided tank (giving them more space then their 3g tanks). our boy be in his own tank side less stressful i would think for all of them. And if we get another guy betta be divided as well. Each betta would get 5g at very minimum space all heated and filtered and with resting spots and hiding places.

The dividers that you use looks much safer then suction cup dividers and mesh and see through ones I've been seeing online and in store! I have figured out our bettas are smart indeed and planning will be needed to keep each one from jumping over and squeezing through small openings. They love to jump for food and feed from hand when given. i think i started the jumping for tricks, bad me lol.

back ground info on other bettas rescues:
Other two bettas : Rio blue and red on anal fins and front long fins mulit colored veil tail 3 inches long now adult male with black head and chocolate red tinted eyes. *found on an shelf at an walmart where baby bettas and other males were dieing in cups not moving, his cup was a bit messy in clear water pale blue he was. I did talk with the manager of store about the issue going on in her store. acted like nothing was wrong and they will live ect.

Reina : red fined and chocolate copper bodied plakat female. 2.5 in length she has grown some and in her red fins and top of her body she has an medium blue sheen sparkle under some blue lighting looks blue and purple hue with her dark body. *found at an walmart shelf in an blue water, dirty cup with no color other then dark bodied for 2.99. only girl there out of many walmarts rest were boys.

Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
She's a marble crow tail. Very pretty. If you're planning two in the same tank it will need to be divided otherwise they will likely kill each other. I would raise the temperature to 80f.
donna Jeter
donna Jeter - 7 years ago
Thank You, Lifewithpets for your advice and expertise! Aurora is my first baby betta got her from petco. surprisingly her cup was clean and not dirty! but one of the most unique colors I've ever seen. I'm not sure what color name or type exactly she is really other then an crown tail. maybe you guys can help me figure that detail out?

here are some pics of her first night home while in cup while prepping her tank. http://abstractioncreator24.deviantart.com/art/Untitled-695419386

I do got an big 10g tank cycling currently and got one other girl betta but im going to wait until both are about same size ish before putting them in same tank with plants or divided sides. haven't decided yet. the temp in the tank is 78f currently, should i raise the temp to 80?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
If it's so young and small I would feed frozen daphnia and brine shrimp this would be better for her till she gets a bit bigger. I'd also increase the temperature to 80-82F. Babies prefer it warmer it will also promote growth.

Mysmall petshop Depends what kind of divider you have! If you get some kind of mesh material, it should work fine with just one filter and heater. If it's a more solid divider, like glass or plastic, You will need a heater and filter in each.

If it's true swim bladder there isn't much that can be done. However if it's constipation then it sounds like you're doing all that I'd suggest. Have you tried Espom salt baths? I've heard they are supposed to help when they're bloated.

Indian almond leaves also lower your ph level, making your water softer then recommended sometimes if use to much of it. be sure to test the ph after adding it if steeping the leaves and adding to the water, just to be safe.

The fins will heal on their own. As long as the water parameters are kept good. I would add a few extra water change per week to your maintenance schedule. There's no need to remove him from the tank that will only stress him more. You can add a little aquarium salt to the tank if you'd like but the water changes are the biggest healer.

Natalie Ritter I've it in a divided tank..I've separated it from other fishes.. The tank's total volume is 8gallons...Should I let it be there in divided tank or should I separate it?

shri nidhi.u.i Hey! Make sure to continue water changes and keep the tank clean, as well as add aquarium salt and use some "Indian Almond Leaves" You should also consider removing the piece of decor that hurt him. (:

Betta fish fins, when ripped, tend to heal on their own. When my betta's fin was torn, I removed any sharp decor in the tank that could have possibly been the cause of the rip. I then added a few extra drops of water conditioner to help keep the water clear so that there is less risk of infection. If your betta is kept with other fish, I would quarantine him in a small tank away from other fish so that he can be more closely monitored. I'm sure your betta will be perfectly fine, the fin should heal nicely :)

I love your videos so much❤️I am so happy I came across your videos. Also do you think I should get a air stone for my betta?I haven't gotten the betta yet I am(trying) to cycle my tank right now. I have read about it and many people have different opinions on it. What do you think?Should I get a air stone?

They don't need an air stone as long as you have filtration but you can also add one if you'd like.
