When bettas hit senior age they should be looked after it more, because they are getting weaker the current(if any) should be toned down a lot. They should be kept in a tiny floating net cage.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
We don’t have any senior bettas at present. The water flow in a Betta tank should always be kept low no matter the age. Not sure I agree with keeping it a net cage but we all have different ways of doing things.

I loved the tour!! Plants, fish, snails, shrimp ect are beautiful!! I have mystery snails that are breeding. I am learning. So far they have laid 4 clutches. The last two were really mushy, they fell apart. But i did see one baby on the glass yaye!! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks! Congratulations on the babies. Once I can lower the water level I think they will breed but I can’t do that at the moment because the goldfish needs all the water I can give him.

Why would keeping water parameters clean be beneficial for the moss balls? Don't you want nitrates and other forms of nitrogen for the plants?

That makes sense! thank you
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
In a normal tank setting yes, but keeping them for resale there is no filter or fish etc so the water can become stagnant.

My most favorite and most special betta is currently doing really bad struggling with dropsy. ): It's been a constant struggle for the past month, but I feel like he's now in the last few weeks or days of his life. I don't want to lose him, but it's hard seeing him like this. I know he's struggling. How do you determine when euthanasia is the best choice? I've never had to deal with a sick fish before.
MoonFeather
MoonFeather - 6 years ago
It really depends on what your comfortable with, I once had a Betta that got the same issue but honestly it's probably best to put him down dropsy can be caused by so many things (bacteria, disorder of the swim bladder, ect) and is next to impossible to cure. P.s I know it's hard.
Hannah Renee
Hannah Renee - 6 years ago
It looks like he's swallowed two marbles and he has pineconing. He doesn't have any swim bladder issues, but he does dart around the tank a lot and sometimes runs into the glass or decor. He still gets interested in food and always comes to me when it's time to eat, but he will only ever eat one or two bites every few days. For the past month I've been treating him as if he was bloated and constipated, but the bloat just got worse and about a week ago he started pineconing all over his body. His colors are fading and he's been a bit lethargic. But other than that he still tries to swim around, still gets excited to see me, and he still looks like he has an effort to live. So even though I know he's suffering and he clearly looks very ill, if he has a will to live should euthanasia still be an option?

Love the update, thanks! I have a question about your frogbit...do you have a lid on that tank? I cannot get it to grow & Justin says it might be because they get wet from condensation from the glass lid? Just wondered how you get it to flourish.
I lost my beautiful Betta boy yesterday too :(
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago

Desert Bloom Bettas
Desert Bloom Bettas - 6 years ago
Sorry to hear Daffy passed, she was gorgeous. Hopefully her babies turn out well and carry on her good looks. <3 Also, for the mystery snails, you might consider dropping their water a little. I've been doing some research on them lately and it seems that they prefer to lay eggs 3+ feet away from water when given the chance in a natural environment (since the babies can drown while still in the clutch), it may be that they're holding back because they don't feel their clutches will be safe so close to the waterline. A lot of people I've talked to seem to have more luck if there's 4-8 inches of dry tank rim above the waterline for them to use.
Desert Bloom Bettas
Desert Bloom Bettas - 6 years ago
yah, that's a tough situation :/ Have you thought about moving the snails to a plastic tub or bucket to breed them separately? I'm considering setting up a deep 15 gallon plastic tote for mine, which'll let me set the water level where I need it. I swear, I've had snails on the brain for the past week!
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Thank you. Yes, I think that is the issue but I can't drop the water any lower otherwise the Goldfish will have even less water to swim in. The breeding of the snails will have to wait.

They have both been sold. We have many females left!
Real Rebellion
Real Rebellion - 6 years ago
Issue with gill coverage = conflict of separation; ...but you said there were other issues as well. Is there a possibility that the female wasn't ready for breeding? And did something seem weird or unusual during breeding? Did you yourself change anything regarding your technique or timing? It would be interesting to know where on her body this issue was appearing, top, sides or bottom, back or front?
It's possible that more fish get ill after the changes you said you are planning to make. By that I'm not intending to say that you shouldn't make changes, but be aware and attentive after any changes and observe your animals and plants. Because something in our way of understanding nature and illnesses just isn't right, we are missing something huge, so we should observe and learn with a mind that isn't just bound to the current understanding of things, because how often has humanity been mistaken already? Hurtful bacteria and viruses are everywhere constantly, the world is completely full of them, it's everywhere, but most organisms are healthy. This applies to us humans as well. An illness only appears after changes, given that these changes trigger a certain conflict in the organism. So far that's my observation.
I wont be offended or anything like that if you think what I say is weird, I don't have to do this and I can stop :) I'm commenting to raise awareness and to find out how things work, but anyone is certainly welcome to disagree or critique.
