While cast netting for fish, I ended up catching this little guy. At first I thought he was a minnow but turns out he is a different species. MasterAquatics it's some kind of darter fish (idk what kind exactly )I have a green sided darter fish in my tank I caught it just like yours it's probably a leopard darter, but for sure it's a darter fish

It's a darter, probably a green breast and and the most difficult part of keeping darters for me is getting them to eat so try to have some tiny live foods

Not a bichir, polypterus means many rays..that only has 1 dorsal not a whole back full.. i dont know alot about american natives, but i looks like a wolf fish just smaller

MasterAquatics darters are not hardy, it may not live unfortunately. And also your fish is indeed a type of darter either a greenbreast or Johnny darter.

Helpful tip for netting fish out of a bucket is to pour all the water out, through your net, and into a second bucket. Can be done really quickly. Best of luck with your new fish!

Some sort of Darter, they live current and don’t get any bigger then what yours is. They like cooler water too. And that one fish definitely is not a Crappie. Looks like a Red Ear Sunfish or Pumpkinseed Hybrid. The darker one with a split tail looks like a Longead Sunfish. Possibly. Shiners don’t need a heater too btw and small rocks and caves will make your darter feel safer

It is against the law to cast net in WI waters at all.

Panfish are not bait fish. The many types of PAnfish can be taken other than by hook and line.
You do not know the type of fish I bet you do not know your regs.
State rules are only in each state. Bait fish here are rough fish and minnow types.
Mostly same as you can buy for bait. With VHS you can not take minnows from one lake to another, once your minnows are in that lakes water they can be used no where else and must be killed not put in the lake.

You can paint the back AND the sites of the tank black. The wild caught fish will feel much more secure and dont hit the glas of the tank.
Is it possible that you can build a pound (outdoor/indoor) for the fish that you catch?

If that is a Long Ear Sunfish, please give it decent size aquarium. Keep it alone if it's that damn 29. A Long Ear can look like a Blue Gill sized Discus.

THe sunfish you caught is not a crappie it is a type of sunfish. A crappie is bigger, has a larger mouth similar to a largemouth bass, crappie has a more pointed nose/mouth, and they can be covered in a lot of black dots or a few

lol definitely not a crappie. It a sunfish 100 percent. Google a crappie and that looks nothing like one. I can't quite tell what kind of sunfish it is now do to the stressed out coloration but buy the shape of it it is definitely a bluegill or sunfish.

Seriously you should get rid of the bass and do a biotope tank with the bluegill and anything else you can pull up out of those drainage ditchs. I mean you can use native plants rocks Driftwood and even dirt if you wanted to. Just a thought
