Of all the fish I've kept, I never "seriously" kept a Betta fish, the most common of all. I've had 2 in my past, but back then I didn't know what I was doing....so this is like keeping one for the first time! They sure are beautiful! A plant that I think is good for a beginner is the amazon sword...the one with the big leaves to the left of the tank....its a root feeder too so you need a good substrate...but it grows at a good pace with co2 and gets pretty big

Thank you, I have dirt under my gravel, but my tank is high tech because I'm running pressurized co2 for the plants. That plant to the right is crypt spiralis...it can grow without co2 (slower though), but it definitely needs a good substrate. Dirt is full of nutrients for the plants and a bag of organic dirt (without fertilizers) is only $3 at lowes or home depot; but dirt is very dirty, that's why a lot of people don't like to use dirt and instead use other plant substrates like ADA soil, fluorite, eco complete, etc....but the price tag is much higher!

lol Bettas are pretty feisty little fish but it's good there's glass between them. I wouldn't want to see that big boy embarrassed when he got his butt beat lol
