I put Bettafix and stress coat. If the filter absorbs the medicine and I'll be using the medicine for 1 or 2 weeks then when do I turn on the filter?

You should be able to use the filter a week after the last dose, or you can just remove the carbon part of the filter, that is the only part that absorbs medication.

I would like to add some of this salt to my 1 gallon that he is in right now. I took him out of his 10 gallon so that he could heel. I keep his water clean by changing it every day. I do 10% to 15% water change. I put in a drop of conditioner that has aloe vera in it it is suppose to help with fin rot. My half moon tore up his top fin pretty good, not sure if it was the plastic plants or the little house decoration. I took all that stuff out now and it has live plants and a very smooth stone with a smooth cave entrance for him to hide. Anyhow, how much of this aquarium salt do I put in it? And when I do the water change do I add anymore salt to the aquarium? Or do I continue to do the water change and after a week add more salt?

+NEB Barnes For healing fin rot go ahead and use 1 teaspoon per gallon and add just enough salt every water change to be enough for how much water you added, not the whole tank.

I got a betta fish less than a month ago, he seemed perfectly healthy aside from spitting food out ( i didnt know that could be a bad sign ), Ive been sick for about a week so i havent cleaned his tank this week or really paid much attention to him aside from dropping food in his tank. But tonight i noticed his color has dramaticly faded, hes moving slowly, almost like he is lethargic, he stays either on the bottom of his tank or near the top in a corner and one of his pectoral fins seems to have dissolved or something, like its almost gone! im completely freaking out! idk whats going on with him but i know it cant be good, and call me crazy but i LOVE this little guy! im a first time betta owner so i have ZERO clues as to what is ailing him. PLEASE HELP ASAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The fins will start to grow back once they recover from the shock of the fin rotting. It can be within the week to never. Some times the damage is too much for the fins to recover, they will never look the same as they did before.

The aquarium salt? First you mix it up in a cup of aquarium water until all the salt is dissolved then poor it into the tank slowly. You dissolve the salt outside of the tank because when it dissolves it could sting the fish as it is being broken up but once it is dissolved it is safe. Just add the salt to any new water being put into the tank because it does not evaporate out or go away once in the water.

Hi im new to bettas and I have been seing pretty bad torn fins on my betta fish infinity.... I started using aquariam salt and then started adding bettafix into his tank but it has been a week and he hasnt been getting any better..if anything hes been getting worse..ive had him for about 2 weeks now I saw he had fin rot the day after purchasing him. I believe I had purchsed him with fin rot. Also he hasnt been eating very much at all I know there stomach is the size of there eye ball but I feel asthough he should be eating more..I love my betta he is one of my best friends I am going to stop the bettafix and try a new medication I am going to be using t.tytrcycle(im not sure thats how you spell it) but I will also purchase the stress coat relief from api he is very active and is also in a 3 gallon tank with 2 plants and a little house.... he doesnt have a filter or a heater but my water never goes beneath 73 f ive been doing water changes weekly I really dont want this to advance can you please help ....@

You can also use rock salt,
In that case you gotta need to use a heater...
Add one teaspoon of salt every one aquarium bowl (dissolved in a cup of water) then pour it,
Keep the temperature from 82 Fahrenheit (28 Celsius) warm water can prevent the wound from infection.
Keep your aquarium in treatment for about 2 to 3 days..
Be patient don't be discourage, be patient, it takes 1 or 5 months to grow it's fins.
Mine was eaten by a baby Bichir, he completely lost his tail, I think it would take 1 year for me to wait :)

If they are half way then start using some medication. To do a partial water change you will need a tubing to suck part of the water out. You can get a siphon hose from the pet store or just go get some plastic tubing from Homedepot or Lowes or such. To start the plastic tubing to pull water out of the tank put one end in and, it may be weird but I do it all the time, on the other end use your mouth to such until the water starts to flow and put the end in a bucked. By doing this you can also use the end of the tubing in the water to such stuff out of the gravel like poop.

I purchsed the ph,strips to see if that is causing it I will aslo test for nitrite,nitrate carbonate and general hardness also I know bad ph levels can cause fim rot but do I need to test the other 4... and thank you so much for your help

You add the salt to the new water being put in during a water change because it will stay in the water. Keep feeding flakes then if that is the only thing he is eating. He is probably sick and sometimes bettas get sick and we don't know why and don't know how to help them. Keep up the care you are giving him and I hope that he gets better.

Thankyou for your help I am going to be using just the salt but my only question is do I add the salt when doing partial water changes and also do I add more conditioner.....for the food he is barely eating 1 flake a day and he wont even touch the pellets ive used over 3 diffrent types of pellet food but I guess he preffers fhe flakes ..does this mean hes sick because ive probably spent like 5 hours doing research soo..

I don't really like going right to medication keep up the salt and use 1 teaspoon per gallon. Try just using the salt for a while it may take a little bit to work, it will rot a little still after putting in the salt then it will start to stop probably a couple days in. While trying to cure the fin rot it would be a good idea to do partial water changes twice a week instead of once a week so there is more fresh water in the tank. Let me know how it goes and feel free to ask any other questions. It should not take to long for the fins to stop rotting but it may take a week or longer for them to start to grow back.

I would always try the salt first because it is natural and the medication could have side effects. I always have salt in my tanks I just add more when they are being treated for something.

I let my dad take care of my betta while I was away and it developed fin rot which worsened and turned into body rot he said he didn't notice much and al he did was give it some aquarium salt twice but that was it and he let it get worse.

+Glee4EVA1000 It may tank a couple days to a week for the fins to stop rotting, since it sounds pretty bad I would also get some external bacteria medication to stop the infection, and still use aquarium salt, 1 teaspoon per gallon (3.7 liters) and only add new salt to the water you replace during water changes because the salt stays in the water unlike medications. If you have any other questions feel free to ask and I hope this helps, do get some external bacteria medication.

My Elephant Ear Betta fish is going through fin rotting and I think it's a mild case, at this point. I have been treating him with aquarium salt for the last 7 days now and he's not getting any better. I have him in a one-gallon tank, with nothing else, except the last 2 days, I put a little "house" for him in there. I mixed 1 tsp. aquarium salt with the tank water (already mixed with water conditioner), and added that to the one gallon tank after the salt has been completely dissolved. I do 100% water change everyday and re-dose. According to the thermometer, his tank water is never below 75F. Any thoughts at to why he's not getting any better? I do see a little more ragged fin the last 2 days. Thanks so much!!

I dose aquarium salt in all my tanks all the time, you just add aquarium salt to new water that you put in the tank because it stays in the water, so if you replace a gallon of water then you add a gallon off water add 1 teaspoon, I think that all the water changes may be stressing him out so that he can not recover, leave him in the same water for a couple days, use aquarium salt and betta fix since it is getting bad. I am pretty sure that not doing as many water changes will help so that the salt and medicine can start to work and so that your fish is not so stressed out, hope this helps.

+Got2LoveFish Thanks for your quick response! So I had to be out of town on Friday's evening, and it is now Sunday (just got back). I left him in a 3-gallons tank with aquarium salt ( 3 tsp. mixed in with the tank water of water condition). His fins are not getting any better and yes, they are getting shorter definitely. Before reading your comment/ feedback, I changed the water, clean out the tank a couple of times with hot water, then mixed in water condition and 1+1/2 tsp. of "BettaFix" from API that I bought at the local pet store. I am getting very worried as his condition does not seem to "stop", but more of his fins are getting ragged, and are getting shorter. He seems to be active, eating ok. I read that I should not dose the aquarium salt for no more than 7-10 days so that was why I decided to go with the "BettaFix". So today is day one treating him with "BettaFix". I don't want to over-doing anything to the guy, but seeing that he's not getting any better, I feel like I have to try do something. Thanks again for your thoughts on this!

It actually may help to do less water changes, try just doing it twice a week. I also have some questions, are the fins still getting shorter? or have they been the same length for a couple days? It will take a couple days for the salt to stop the fin rot, once that happens the fins will stay about the same length and then after a couple more days the fins will start to grow back, so right now I just recommend being patient and let the salt keep working it will take a little bit, but if the fins are still rotting then let me know, and any other questions feel free to ask!

The bactirasheild will stop the fin rot, and you should use it if the fin rot is really bad, like half the tail gone, but just use aquarium salt, the salt will help the fins to stop rotting as well as to help them grow back and keep them healthy, it will also improve your bettas over all health, so I highly recommend using aquarium salt instead of a medication, one of because all the good effects and two because it is natural, it is not an actual medication and you can use it all the time to have healthier fish and to help to prevent some diseases!

your video was very helpful and simple I purchased a cute Beta for my toddler Valentina for Christmas, she loves bubbles so we call him bubbles, he was very active and tons of personality for about three weeks as well as nesting a ton, all of a sudden he became very lethargic and just sits at the top or inside his shell, I had the water tested at Petco and it was perfect as well as changing it frequently, do you have any ideas of what may be wrong with him and how to help this little guy "Bubbles"

Is his water temperature cold, it should be above 72 f and make sure you don't over or under feed him, 3-4 pellets a day, you could also start using aquarium salt it helps with gill function and adds electrolytes into the water. A small hole should not be too big of a problem. Make sure you are doing water changes at least once a week to keep the water clean, that would be the first thing to make sure of. You can add some Aquarium salt to the tank as well, 1/2 teaspoon per gallon. This salt will help the environment of the water to have beneficial electrolytes and such as well as encouraging healing and discouraging disease. Feel free to ask other questions as well.

I do not know the specific cause but I would try a water change and adding aquarium salt 1 teaspoon per gallon but I do not know if your fish will make it normally when they go vertical they are to far gone, but try the water change and some salt, if you could give me any additional details like if he has a big or abnormally small stomach and if there was any thing else that he was doing before he went vertical that would help me to try and figure the cause out.

the stripes are because he is stressed, the white dot on his head may be a scale fallen off or something, did you remember water conditioner? the stripes should go away when he gets more familiar with his tank.

It does not look like fin rot, maybe just a little, I don't think it is anything to be worried about, some fish have black naturally around there fins like my plakat betta Circles.
