The Betta fish fry are a month and a half old and are starting to change color. Some of the fry are now turning cellophane in color. We have moved them into a 20 gallon grow out tank and are doing daily large water changes. We have found that many of the fry don't have ventral fins and have been getting some die off. Don't feed worms,That is the cause of your loss ventrals.

I don't think it's the worms themselves but the bacteria on the bottom of the tank where the worms sit. It cause their fins to rot away. Sadly I didn't use salt and I think that would have made a difference.

No, it's due to bacteria in the tank.

The grow out tank is a 20 gallon long. The sponge filter is an XY380 I think.

Why do you think you had so many deformed fry? That seems unusual. Did something go wrong in the eggs or do the parents have bad genetics?

It’s seems to be common when using micorworms early on. There are many different theories as to why which I will be testing out when I breed again.

That's very interesting about the missing ventral fins. I wonder if that is an external sign of a genetic defect that affects their survivability?

It is interesting to me that there are very few without ventral fins that have made it to the larger size. I wonder if it’s the bacterial infection which slows the growing process down.

I have a tetra waterfall globe 1.8 gallon is that ok for a betta? It would have a sand substrate with a Amazon sword.

Benjamin No.. all 1.8 is really suitable for is shrimp and plants. Bettas need atleast 2.5 gallons. Some argue 5, mine has 9 so the bigger the better. Also the rounded shape isn't good for fish. It can cause eye problems.

Help! My betta didn't poop for almost 2 days now and she has a little lump under her stomach. Should i worry of constipation? Am i feeding her to much?

how much do you feed? I think generally only 2-3 pellets a couple times a day is recommended, they have wee stomachs. Try fasting her for a day or two, and if that doesn't help much feeding a bit of shelled pea can help clean out their digestive system. Since they can't digest plant matter it acts kind of like fibre does for us, it pushes everything through.

Valerie Thomas I would skip feeding for a day (or maybe two depending on how bad it is). I actually fast mine for one day a week so he has a day to digest. I know a lot of other people do as well. How much do you feed her?

Very sorry to hear about the loss of some of the babies. I had the same problem at 5 1/2 weeks. I love to see their full tummies after they eat!

Die offs are common, it sucks! But that's why I don't really have high hopes for the fry the first few months. Hopefully you do get a few babies out of this!

They’re so cute! It’s too bad that some are dying off though. My bettas spawned yesterday and the eggs are starting to hatch just now, it’s so amazing seeing this part of keeping bettas. I can’t wait until my little guys are free swimming as well!

They just now are starting to eat brine shrimp?

I've heard a few places that if they eat off the bottom instead of from in the water column for the most part that can have an effect on the ventral fins development. I wonder if that is why so many breeders use daphnia and brine shrimp as soon as they can.

They have been on baby brine shrimp since a few days old but they have only been on full sized brine shrimp for the last week or so. Yes that does seem to be the cause.

Aren't you suppose to start culling the fish with deformity? Sad but you would end suffering

I'd argue that since so many of the ones with the ventral fin deformity are dying that perhaps they are suffering and you just can't tell.

Yes we have have done some culling. Having no ventral fins does not cause an issue to the fish it is more about aesthetics.

That's too bad some don't have ventral fins. Are you breeding again? You might have more success from the next batch. You've done an amazing job raising them so far. Do you thing that was something to do with the microworms? better luck next time ;) They are amazing fish, happy new Year!
