Yes it's a nest. Do you have a female betta nearby? If you do, is she paying attention to him? Does she have vertical stripes on her body? If the answer is yes, they are ready to mate. You could put her in with him but be aware that they will tear each others fins up during their mating ritual. One may actually kill the other. No guarantees. If you don't have a female, you could leave the nest in place, he'll just build another and another until he realizes he's alone.

They might do either. But it will be hard to tell until they either lay eggs or die. I would keep them in the same aquarium separated by a glass partition until the female displays 'tiger stripes'. This means she is interested in mating.

now that people is a healthy strong and good male betta, you can tell because although they arent the most even bubbles they are the quantative and he was able to squeeze out so many eggs at one time. he was well kept and raised.

@subtleserveyor The male made that bubble nest. They like to hang out under something that floats (possibly an instinct to hide from predators in the wild) so I put a small piece of a styrofoam plate in the tank. The male was always under it. It provides a good place for the male to create his bubble nest.

@MsBieberLuver100 This disease is called 'pop eye', of course, & I'm sure it killed your fish by now. It's nearly always fatal, so there is not much you could have done. Before you get another fish, wash your aquarium & all furniture THOROUGHLY & rinse it with a bleach solution (a cup of bleach in a gallon of water) & rinse it well. Let the aquarium dry completely so the bleach evaporates before you put fish back in. Sometimes they're already sick when you buy them (like walmart fish).

@Allenyx It would be highly unusual to have a female lay eggs with no bubble nest present. Part of the courtship is for the female to 'accept' the male's bubble nest as adequate for her eggs. Did your pair do what mine in the video did? Were you able to see the eggs being laid or on the aquarium floor?

I just wanted to comment on the Petco bettas. My two from Petco just had guppies, so it's not that it's not possible. I had 3 females and 1 male. I eventually ended up with 2 females and they both got pregnant at the same time. Maximux (male) did not squeeze the babies out of the one female and she died. But he did squeeze them out of the other (Emerald). But he made his next in a little hut I made out of plastic. is that okay?

@rac94 She probably has Ick which is a short name for a long disease. The spots itch and she's trying to scrape them off. Go to your pet store and get her a wide-spectrum disease treatment. It's not very expensive. Good luck.

@herbabyygirl Answer these questions: Does the fish have long or lacy fins? If yes, it's a male. Does the fish have strong colors red/blue/etc? If yes, it's a male What do the eggs look like? Bubbles on the water? If yes, it's still a male, that's his bubble nest, not the actual eggs. Females have drab colors and short fins.

@katelynh168 Most pet stores carry both male and female bettas. The females have shorter fins and aren't as colorful as the males. I think my female passed out from either the exertion of laying eggs or the ecstacy of laying eggs. She got over it quickly though.

@Morroku3 You don't need to float anything for them to build a nest, he will build it in a corner of the tank for stability. Bettas just like to have a roof over their heads. They like still water so if you have a pump or filter that churns the water, turn it off. It will tear up a bubble nest.

@HbDark I got my bettas from the local pet store. They usually have a lot of both genders. Most people don't buy the females unless they intend to breed them - the females are much less colorful.

@flynironworker No special equipment needed. I used a 10 gallon tank with a clear plastic divider and no filter. They need to see each other to start courtship. No filter needed, they like still water for their bubble nest. The white thing in my video is a piece of a styrofoam plate. They like to build under something that floats.

@Kikyo361 The eggs are very tiny but if you look closely, you can see a white dot hanging at the bottom of the bubble. That dot is an egg. It should hatch in 2 to 3 days into a tiny fish. Make sure the babies have some aquarium grass to hide in, even the plastic stuff is good - better in fact because it doesn't die. Feed the babies small amounts of cooked egg yolk. Good luck.

DJSmoke is right. I think I would clean out his aquarium if I accidentally ruined his nest. Clean out all the old bubbles if there are any left and change out at least 25% of the water. After that, you'll just have to give him time to rebuild. He might not be in the mood to mate for a while. The waxed paper is a good idea but it might get soggy and sink. I use a small piece of a styrofoam plate. Anything that floats will work.

DO NOT move the bubble nest. Take the male fish out of the tank until the babies hatch and are big enough to not be eaten! The eggs hang on the bubbles and will fall off if you try to move them!

If he built a nest of any size, he's ready to mate. Some bettas like mansions, some are happy with apartments.

he might kill her - or she might kill him. you could put her in the tank with him and watch them for 15 minutes to see how they get along - although I've had fish who seemed to get along kill each other overnight. if they fight, you could put a divider in the tank to keep them apart instead of having them in separate containers. I have clear plastic squares that I use as dividers in my aquarium. that way they can still see each other.

leave them next to each other until he makes a bubble nest. if you have a filter or air stone making the water swirl around, the bubble nest will come apart. they need still water for laying eggs. when the female has vertical stripes on her body, she's ready to mate so put her in the tank with the male. they will fight & tear each others fins but that's normal. when she's ready to lay eggs she'll hang out under the bubble nest until they 'do the dance'. good luck.

because the female is still not ready or willing to mate. Make sure her belly is white and full of eggs before attempting to mate them. If the female is ready and willing, she will exhibit dark vertical bans on her body as in this video and actually approach the nest or the male to signal her intention.

The female will likely try to eat, so remove the female as soon as she's finished laying eggs. The male will likely chase and kill the female if not removed. The male however is a caring father and will help care for the young fries until they're all free swimming.

yes they will try to eat the babies. babies need a lot of plants (real or plastic) to hide in or the parents will eat them. Or put the parents in another tank until the babies grow up

get the female of your choice but don't put her in the tank right away. keep her near the male so they can see each other. when he makes a bubble nest & she has vertical stripes on her body, they are ready to mate. they will still fight & tear up each other's fins but that's their courtship (weird but true). look at how ragged my fish's fins are. after she lays eggs, put her back in her own tank so she won't eat them. take the male out after they hatch & feed the babies cooked egg yolk.

If he has not made a bubble nest, he might not be interested in her yet. I would keep them in separate bowls until he starts making the bubble nest. Even after he makes a nest, they will still rip each other's fins a bit. That's betta courtship.

Yes females can be aggressive towards each other, but for several years now I have had only one female that was like that. There's always one girl who just doesn't like having other girls around! : ) Thanks for the comments.

By over-amorous I mean they are ripping into each other's fins, tearing bits off and eating them. No, Betta's don't usually bother other fish but one of mine just started using my tetras as living snacks. Females can usually live together peacefully but not males. Two males will try to kill each other and occasionally the females will kill the males they don't like. You just have to watch your fishes personality to see how aggressive he/she is.

That was called green myrio but now i have only plastic lants. live plants just disintegrated and caused lots of algae to grow in the tank. Its much easier to keep the tanks clean now.

How big is the fishbowl? I would not put them in anything less than 5 gallons and make sure you can get the female out easily after she lays eggs. Also make sure she has hiding places to protect her from the male in case he's over-amorous.

The eggs should hatch within 3 days of being laid. If they haven't hatched by now, they are probably not going to. If it were me, I would probably replace half the water in the tank, but not clean the entire tank (unless the water smells bad).

If she has tiger stripes and he has a bubble nest, leave them together until she lays eggs. They may fight a bit and tear each other's fins but that's normal. Watch them closely and as soon as she lays eggs, take her out. Eggs should hatch in 2 or 3 days. When they hatch, take him out too and leave the babies by themselves. Feed them boiled egg yolks until they are big enough to eat betta food.

yes he's looking for a ladyfish friend. Don't put them together in the same tank until the ladyfish shows 'tiger stripes' that mean she is interested. If she doesn't, that means she has not accepted him as a daddyfish for her eggs. They will fight and one will probably kill the other. Read the previous posts - other people have asked and offered some good advice.

The eggs are extremely hard to see in the bubble nest. Usually only one egg per bubble can be seen. The egg is a tiny speck hanging on the bottom of the bubble. The size of the bubble doesn't matter.

Yes put the tanks side by side to see how they react to each other. When the female displays 'tiger stripes' and hangs in the water with her head down, it's time to put her in with him. The male should have a bubble nest ready. They will probably fight a bit and tear each other's fins. That's normal. When they are ready to mate, she will stay under the bubble nest while the male continues his courtship.

It would be better to have the bubble nest in the 10 gallon tank. Be sure there are plants for the babies to hide in after hatching or they will be eaten. You can leave the male in the tank with the eggs until they hatch - usually within 2 days. Then put him in a separate tank and leave the babies in the big tank.

phrmrms is right, this is normal, but if she ALWAYS hides, she is not ready to mate or does not like this male. when she is interested in the male, she will display vertical bars on her body - and she will fight back. my female ripped off bits of fin and ate them right in front of the male - as if to say "take that, buster". as you can see in my video, their fins are pretty short and torn up - by each other during the courtship.

Unfortunately, yes it is true. Even the male will sometimes eat the eggs. You are supposed to remove the female from the tank that has the eggs in it right after she lays them, but if you look at my video you can also see the female spitting eggs out at the 2:14 mark so she does not ALWAYS eat them. I just make sure mine are well fed all the time.

I have a cheap 10 gallon aquarium and I divided it with pieces of clear plastic like the kind you can get in picture frames. You could also use nylon window screen as long as the fish can't get around it. My fish could get through even a tiny gap in the acrylic so it had to fit pretty tight.

the only thing you can do to HELP hold the bubbles together is to not have a filter or air stone causing turbulence in the water. the bubbles are stuck together with fish spit (eeeuuuugghhh!) and if the water is being churned up by a filter, the nest will fall apart. bettas like still water.

I don't know about stunning her. After watching them for a while, it looked like he was trying to nudge her into an upside-down position so he can "hug" her, squeezing out her eggs. It kind of looked like two inexperienced beginners trying to figure out how to "do it". It took them several days to quit tearing each other's tails, and several hours to get to the action in this video. Although she certainly looks stunned after laying eggs!

Not enough info to comment. Is the male in with her? Does she hide from him or chase him around? Is she eating enough? She may simply not like the male. Could be lots of reasons.

the bubble nest in my video is typical of most bubble nests. the fish blows the bubbles - yes with fish spit - and they don't pop right away. I've seen other bubble nests that cover the entire top of their tank.

If they aren't roughly the same size, the small one might not be mature enough to breed. Plus the smaller one might not be able to defend him/her self from the rough courtship.

That's not fighting, that's courtship - sort of. I think it's nature's way of making sure only the strongest fish reproduce. In the wild, these fish live in murky, predator infested waters. They gotta be tough to survive. A fish that can't defend itself is lunch.

Pet shops sell screened enclosures for babies. They hang on the side of the aquarium. The babies can stay there until they get bigger, then put them in a separate tank or make sure they have enough hiding places so daddy can't eat them. Before I raised babies, I would scope out the pet shops to see if they wanted them. I hate seeing bettas in tiny, dirty bowls, dying one by one because nobody gives them clean water or food.

If you get a male and put it in with your female, they will tear each other's fins apart and maybe THEN they will breed (if they don't kill each other first). If you don't want eggs, you could get some more colorful females and put them all together. The girls don't fight each other - must be a guy thing.

it feels so good, they faint! the boy AND girl went numb in this one! evolutionarily speaking, the anciant females probably ate thier eggs when they saw them. so, the only children that survied where of the females who eather HELPED the male, or went numb. Aligators and Sea-turtle mothers go into a trance wile laying eggs. you can come right up to them, and they will not EVEN know you're there! so it's probably an even older tacktict than the speices of betta. i've thought about this alot.

No they are not eating them, they gather them in their mouth (look ma, no hands!) and spit them into the bubble nest. You can see my female doing that at the end of the video. The male is also spitting eggs into the bubble nest but it's harder to see the eggs.

Unless the male is present, the eggs won't be fertilized. The male makes the nest and fertilizes the eggs when the female lays them. So unless you get a male in with her quickly the eggs won't hatch in any case. If you put a male in with her now, watch them closely to see if they get along. You may have to put them in a divided tank until you see her showing vertical stripes which indicates that she is ready to mate.

The females have much shorter fins. Only the males grow the long flowing fins. The females usually aren't as brightly colored either.

You take the female out immediately after laying eggs. When the babies hatch, take the male out too. Once they hatch, they don't need any parental care. The adults will eat them if they get a chance. You CAN put two or more females in the same tank. Only the males fight - typical guys : )

I don't know how I can help you. You must be living in a very remove place if you can't find another tank at a local store like Target or KMart. An alternative would be to put a divider in the tank you have to separate your fish. I used squares of clear plastic to keep them apart in the same tank.

Betta courtship is very physical. They will tear each other up (literally) if left together in a small tank. Obviously they will get around to laying eggs together but the female is more likely to eat the eggs than the male. The male will eat the hatchlings later if you don't keep him away from them. The key is to make sure there are plants & aquarium furniture for each fish to "hide" behind.

Yes I have tried frozen brine shrimp, he didn't eat it that much. I feed him flakes specially for Betta, it also comes with some dried worms and larvae.

Sounds like enough - I assume she is eating it all. Is this food specifically for bettas or for generic aquarium fish? Some flake food may not have enough protein for bettas. Some fish are vegetarian and the flakes are fine for them, but bettas are carnivores. Have you tried frozen brine shrimp?

If the female has turned darker with vertical stripes and is hanging in the water with her head slightly down, she is ready to mate. Especially if she looks a little fatter than usual. Be preapared however, they will shred each other's fins during their "mating dance" which is normal. Be sure she has a place to hide from him occasionally.

As the babies got older, they need to be segregated from the adults or they will get eaten, male or female. When they are grown, the males certainly need to be separated or they will kill each other. You can only have one male betta in an aquarium.

I don't really know why none hatched. I fed Ralph his normal amount of food after egg laying but other breeders recommend not feeding or only feeding them a small amount. I'm still learning Ralph's habits. That's a good idea about the female's territory - well worth investigating.

Sadly, none hatched even though I removed the female after mating. The male might have eaten them even though he was well fed.

It only took a day for him to build the nest - once he decided to build it; deciding took about a month. No heater, the tank is in my office and it's pretty comfortable. No gravel, just a few large glass stones on the bottom for decoration. I didn't want the eggs to fall into gravel where he couldn't retrieve them.

Sounds like the eggs were ready - partner or not. Her tummy was probably just too full. After her first mating, Alice leaked eggs for a few hours. It was wierd. Is Ringo showing any interest in her? Can he see her from his house?

As angelbaby found out, you might want to shut off the filter or block the moving water from the bubble nest. Bettas like still water.

You may not see the mating at all, it happens fast. He wraps himself around her and hugs the eggs out of her. The eggs are hard to see after he puts them in the nest. One egg will cling to each bubble. You might want to take all the gravel out so the bottom of the aquarium is smooth for retrieving eggs. You'll see a few eggs on the bottom that he missed.

Yeah, I have a divider in my aquarium that keeps the filter from blowing the nest apart. It creates pretty rough water. Don't feel guilty. They can try again.

When she hangs kinda "head down" under the nest, it means she has accepted his romantic intentions. They can take HOURS to get into position.

As long as he's happy, that's all that matters. Some fish don't want a "house" at all and simply anchor the bubble nest in the corner of the aquarium.

When the nest is built, put her in the tank with him. They will shred each other's fins but this is normal. Don't leave them together overnight, they may kill each other.

First of all, keep them separated until the female shows vertical bars on her sides and the male blows a bubble nest. Give him a "home" like a floating sytrofoam plate or floating plants to anchor the nest under.

I did remove her as soon as I saw the eggs hanging in the bubblenest. Alas, it was a futile effort. Well, I didn't know what I would actually DO with all those babies. Did you see Alice spitting eggs at the very end of the video? That surprised me.

Daddy was trying to catch the eggs to put them in the bubble nest. He takes care of the babies....mom will eat the eggs and has to be taken out of the tank as soon as breeding is over.

No babyfishes. Either the eggs were not fertile or daddy ate them before they hatched. Ralph and Alice are now in separate apartments while their fins grow back. They watch each other constantly and Alice is bloating up again so maybe it will work this time.

If they were my fish I would separate them while I was gone. They will literally shred each other given the chance. I have mine separated now so he can recuperate from being nearly eaten by her.

For the bubble nest, I cut a piece off the edge of a styrofoam plate (the curved part) and put it in the aquarium upside down so there's a small space under it. Boyfish built his bubble nest under it. The female will display vertical bars-not horizontal-& hang in the water under the bubble nest with her head slightly downward. Horizontal bars might mean something else-aggression, maybe fear. It took mine weeks to "get to know each other", she alternately displayed horizontal & vertical bars.

A 2 gal tank should be big enough for mating, if you have any babies you'll want to remove R & J or they might gobble them up!

The eggs didn't hatch, I suspect they ate them for a snack even though I removed the female from the tank after spawning. It's possible that the eggs were not fertile.

The male will always have brighter colors and larger fins than the female. The male makes the bubble nest; he will more readily make one under something floating on the surface, like a piece of a styrofoam cup or plate (that's what I used). When the female is ready to lay eggs, she will display vertical bars and hang out under the bubble nest with her head down a bit. It took mine several weeks to get to that point and they tore each others fins up a lot in the process.

A female can lay about 500 eggs. This looks like about 150-200.

The male gathers up the eggs as they fall to the bottom and spits them out into the bubble nest where they hang in the bubbles until they hatch 2 days later. Usually the female will eat the eggs, but this female can be seen spitting out some eggs (which float to the top) in the last few seconds of the video.
