I have a female betta fish with 12 female guppies , with one female Molly balloon and with one young female swordtail , plus 6 espei rasboras . They all do fine . My girl betta never nip the fins of her tank mates , never bothers the female guppies . Female guppies , using sperm storage they still give birth to fry and she doesn't even eat them . I do remove the fry as soon as I find them as I don't want any male guppy to mature there . Only females in my tank as I don't want breeding to keep going . Hopefully this sperm storage will ends soon .

I have a female betta living with 12 female bettas . She doesn't even kill the fry that some of my female guppies release ( even without a male they keep giving birth because of sperm storage ) , I also have 6 espei rasboras and one balloon Molly female and a female swordtail . My female betta has a nice temper . She never nips .

The reason goldfish can't be kept with Bettas is more for the Bettas sake. Goldfish will do fine at those warm temperatures. They aren't cold water, they are temperate and are highly adaptable. But goldfish need 20 gallons of water alone and also they will often get big enough to eat the Betta. In addition the DIETS are very different so feeding them in the same tank with the appropriate foods is impossible and the fish won't thrive.

It isn't a good idea. Even though she hasn't had issues, many don't have issues until they do. The risk is not worth it. One day she may awaken to find multiple guppies injured or dead.

I've been really enjoying your videos! I just bought my very first 20 gallon hex. It was 106 bucks and it was on sale for 86 something. It is cycling now. :) I'm planning to do a jungle theme and very tall plants. I'm planning to get guppies. How many would you recommend for guppies? I was thinking of putting my male betta "Edward" along with the guppies. He does look like he's a pretty laid back fish.

My former betta grew up in a guppy community tank so he never had a problem with them, never chased them unless they went by his hide which he was highly territorial over, he did eat all the babies which was fine cause i wasnt trying to breed guppies

All right everybody, ive finally found someone that actually know how to take care of a betta!!! Creative pet Keeping, this tank and your knowledge are great. you prouve to us that a betta need a bigger tank and can live with other fish. I belive you know exacly what you are doing and i will immediatly subscribe, like and probably recommende this video for other fish keeper that are asking questions about betta. Your fish is trully happy, i have no dobt about it. if i could like this video ten times, i would like it a thousand time. very, very good job!!! now this is true fish keeping! i have nothing wrong to say about this. even if guppys are uselly not a good choice with betas, im not afraid about the ones living in this tank because your betta is chill. this is legit the best beta video I have seen in an awful lot of time... everybody, THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!!!!!!!! only a few fish keeper have my respect and you are entering this small list of people. good job ;)

Im going to get a Community Tank with 5 female bettas and maybe 2 julii corys. (15 gallon tank) Do you think this would work out,and are these platys good for bettas? I chose them because they are ground fish so they wont meet the bettas too often. I heard that i should put in all the bettas at the same time,so should i put the corys in before the bettas?

I've just tried adding my betta fish to community fist tank that also had a Orange Mikey Mouse type of fish. It seemed ok during the day with the lights on but in the evening it was a totally another story, I think fish become much more active at night & agressive fish such as the Beta becomes a bigger bully towards the Mikey Mouse fish, almost constant stalking in my 20 gallon tank with plenty of plant coverage and rocks to hide. The Betta fish contstantly showing his puffed out side gills. I placed my Betta back into a seperate tank and all is well. He might get along better with Zebra Danio Fish better.

They can if u know what your doing. I have one in my community tank with guppies and he is amazing with them he don't even bother with any of my fish mind u I do have a bigger tank 50 gallons but still as along as u know how to house them together than its not a problem :) some bettas are calmer than others and you need a very docile one. and what I did was found one that was very docile and raised him in that tank from a baby

I have a 37 gallon planted (heavily, but so far not grown much) and 2 male betta in sperate tanks (I'm not going to put them together). In the 37 gallon I have 5 tiger barbs and 2 gouramis that seem to not care to pick on anyone and are pretty easy going... with the set up do you think I would be okay with introducing one of the bettas to the tank? CPK, Most everything you said applied in my case, as well. I had a 30 gallon tank, very heavily planted with many guppies and platy's and one male Betta. As you said, since the tank was large and well planted, everyone had space, hiding places and all was peaceful with the Betta leaving the guppies alone. The only thing that came up was the babies that would show up when I wasn't watching. Since the tank was so heavily planted, I left the babies in the tank which probably meant that Betta was getting some live baby food from time to time but it was a small price to pay for having an otherwise peaceful tank with a constantly growing guppy/platy population.

Ouinn Ouinn
Ouinn Ouinn - 8 years ago
Betta + guppy community tank is a VERY bad idea. Take a 30L tank (10 gallon) for your betta ALONE and another tank (80L minimum / 20 gallons) for the guppies. You can still take the baby guppies to feed the betta if you don't want your guppy tank overpopulated but don't put them together. This video is the perfect exemple of what you don't have to do. That's why I hate when people put videos like that, if they want to make bullshits with their fishes and tanks that's their problem, but they should not give bad exemples to other people.
Betta is the enemy number 1 of guppies. They can't live together.

Put goldfish in warm water and they grow twice as big twice as fast.

My local Chinese has a tropical tank with 16in catfish and goldfish over 10in I've seen them put small ones in like 5in then a year later they're as big as the rest. it's mental.

But they do look scruffy big nasty scales dislodged ect but still a sight to see. I wouldn't do it and I have told them it's not a good idea but they don't listen.

They had a beautiful shark catfish about 10in I loved watching that as they cooked but one day it was gone. the monster plec is still ther tho.

+Creative Pet Keeping thanks I got some fish already I'll do a video on it soon. I got a Molly and a school of tetras and some dwarf frogs also a snail lol. I also have 4 females Bettas right now but I won't put them in the tank yet ✌️

Creative Pet Keeping - 8 years ago
+Frosty Pet Adventures With Bettas its never 100%that it will work. I would slowly start with the easier fish first..guppies... then add the neons later and see how that works out first. With the female Bettas have a backup plan..so a tank divider or something just in case you need to separate them/they are too aggressive to the other fish.

I guess I got lucky. My betta have been living with guppies since my 5.5 gal. Now I have a 10 gallon. He never chases them or flares at them which is great for me. My guppies are at a point where they don't even care about him and will swim right next to him.

Creative Pet Keeping

+101Iheartmoondancer Any sort of tetras should be ok. I would try just the male with the tetras first to see if it works out before adding the females. Also, get a breeding container so that you can separate the male if he gets too aggressive. Sometimes males tend to relax after a while and keeping them in a breeding container ensures that no fish get stressed out.

I'm new to fish tanks and I have a very serious question. I bought two male Guppies last week. At first I loved them, now I hate them. This is because this week I added 2 Platies and 2 Mollies, which are GREAT, but the guppies keep harassing my cool new fish. They also ate all but one of my brand new Molly fry after just one day and it probably won't last much longer. I do not want more of the fuckers, but I read that you need to put them in groups of five or more. If I get more I'm only getting males, because they breed incessantly if there are females. Unfortunately, I read they they will eventually kill each other off as they get older if you only put males in the tank. Is this true? I don't want anymore guppies unless they're males, but is this safe? Also, will they gang up on other fish when I get 5 total and do they eventually calm down/get more peaceful? Overall I'm very unhappy with the fish categorizations. There should be more than just the 3 peaceful, semi-aggressive, and aggressive distinctions because these things are by no means fully peaceful.

I adore how you did the grass in the background.  I want to try a guppy tank, no betta.  The current is too stressful in there, even with a buffer so I had to take my guy out and give him his own space; his fins were getting shredded but now they're growing back nicely.  Guppies seem like they would enjoy riding the current. I have lots of plants for them to sleep in, just need to clean the tank 100% before putting new fish.

As well, how do I lower a water current? Mine is extremely high unfortunately :(
T-Zay
T-Zay - 9 years ago
+Meghan Eisenhauer You can buffer it by cutting out the curved part of a plastic water bottle in a 'C' shape then tape the C onto the filter and have it curve under where the water falls into the tank. That may slow the flow and reduce water tension. If it's still too powerful, you have to get another filter than has a lower setting you can switch to. I have the best luck with National geographic brand of filter. The quieter the filter the better for both you and the fish.

It's highly recommended to just go with female guppies because they have shorter fins and are less colorful, you'll have a lower chance of the betta being aggressive

My female betta lives with 12 female guppies . They do fine . She never nipped the guppies . She doesn't even eat the fry that they frequently release as some of them are still storing sperm from when they mated last time at the aquatic shop . I do remove the babies right away and raise them in another tank and sell them though .

I'm aware. I used to have a very sweet king betta whom I believe I had housed quite a variety of tank mates with-with no problem. If you have males in there and not enough females for them then they can get pretty aggressive.. Also territory may be a problem. Try moving the decor around and adding dense plants and hiding places. Remember to lay off the plastic plants though cause they'll cut the fins of the betta. Fabric and live plants are great.

+tazia hall While a gallon an inch can be used in some cases, I just want to add that at some ends of the spectrum it gets ridiculous. I mean would you put a single Endler in a 1 gallon tank? While some people actually would which is weird since anything under a 5 gallon really isn't suited for any fish, and the fact that fluctuations will occur with water parameters easier. Also imagine a 3 foot fish in a 36 gallon tank, which is somewhere between 30" and 36" in length normally.
T-Zay

My female betta was given to me because she was killing my friend's guppies (swimming around with their dead bodies clenched in her mouth like a watery pit bull - vicious little thing!).

My friend had 2 male bettas in a 30 gallon with guppies and for the most part, everyone got along (the veil-tail males were too slow to chase and kill guppies I suspect, and too lazy to fight each other much).

I'd like to do a single male with guppies in a 26 gallon but I have a kribensis pair and their mostly grown up fry in there at the moment (the parents don't try to kill their grown up offspring like I thought they would so they've stayed - the grown fry are eating the new batches of fry / eggs which is good or I'd be overrun!).

Depends on the fin type of the betta.
Yes it will shred fins if it's a veil tail, but a moderate to low current will not shred plakat / wildtype fins (no one is going to make a river manifold for a betta tank I hope!!)

Will it work if I put Tetras, Mollies, and guppies together? If I later add a betta to it can it cause harm? It's with a 20 gallon long aquarium. I'm new with this so I'm not sure how to really work it. I had a tank when I was young but really never knew how to handle it and well many of my fish died when I was a kid, this time I want to do it right. Is it recommended to use sand over gravel too? +Luculencia Thank you so much! I'll look more into Cycling in the aquariums
Luculencia
Luculencia - 9 years ago
First allow me to say that if you haven't already done so, look up the nitrogen cycle in aquariums, and learn all about cycling a tank - an uncycled tank is probably what killed all your other fish from ammonia / nitrite poisoning.
Its unfortunate the most lfs do not tell you about the requirement to cycle your tank before you put fish in - or they give incorrect information like "let the tank sit empty for a few days first". Cycling takes 4 - 6 weeks and needs an ammonia source - it won't happen in an empty tank without fish unless you add ammonia to the tank.

Now on to your question:
Tetras and mollies/guppies can work if you chose your tetra species very carefully.

Most tetras require acidic, soft water which is the opposite of what livebearers like mollies and guppies require. Livebearers NEED slightly alkaline, quite hard water to do well. If you keep mollies in soft water they will get the shimmies and die eventually, and they won't be happy or show their best colours before they go. Guppies are slightly more adaptable to soft water but still won't grow as well, be as healthy or live as long as if you kept them in harder water with a higher pH.

Mollies kept in soft water are VERY prone to fungal infections and bacterial diseases. Many people keep them in slightly brackish water to avoid infections but ideally hard, alkaline freshwater is what (short-fin) mollies naturally live in and do best in.

There are some tetras that can live comfortably in harder / more alkaline waters. You can do a search online for these, some that I recall are Pristella / x-ray tetra and blind cave tetra / Mexican tetra.

If you think outside of the tetra family,  glassfish (Parambassis ranga) can live in hard water and they school together and look pretty cool (they're almost completely see through). There are also a lot of rainbowfish species that prefer harder / alkaline water and these are very colourful.

Betta splendens (the common betta) are quite adaptable to most water conditions (except for the wild caught ones). You should be able to keep them in a moderately hard, slightly alkaline tank with mollies. If they've come from soft / acidic water in the shop, make sure you acclimate them to the harder water slowly over a period of weeks.

The only problems you may have is the mollies or guppies nipping the trailing fins of the betta, or the betta eating the smaller guppies and molly fry. Adult mollies should be too large for a betta to threaten. Don't get sailfin mollies are they are much more aggressive and nippy than shortfin mollies, and need a 30 gallon minimum (preferably more) as they grow to around 4-5 inches in length.

Add the betta last to the tank so that the other fish have time to grow into their adult sizes and get established. If you put the betta first it may become territorial and attack any future additions to the tank.

Good luck, and well done if you read all the way to the end!

I used to have a male betta with guppies, platies, neon tetras, and cory cats. They all got along awesome, never once did I witness my betta even flaring at anyone else. He lived in there to 3, a decent age.
So, yeah. This is totally safe and possible, but I recommend keeping you betta in a bowl next to the community tank for a week or two before puttin him in so you can observe how he reacts to seeing other fish. If he gets too excited, get him his own nice 5 gallon tank.

But you can keep goldfish and bettas together at 20 degrees (room temperature in Melbourne, Australia) Celsius and make sure they are the same size.
Tom N
Tom N - 8 years ago
+Matthew Calabro Yes, but goldfish will always be much bigger than Bettas at some point. I mean they will get a foot long so you can have it in there for a few months at most, because by 6 months the goldfish should be maybe 4-6 inches, making it bigger than the Betta. Also by adjusting temperature to suit them both you are going to be changing ones metabolism, affecting their lifespan

I dropped a pretty double tail male betta in with 3 colorful guppy males yesterday. The betta only messes with the guppies when they get close to him, and the guppies do that a lot...they bolt over to the betta and bump into him then swim across the tank. Betta just is like "wtf man" and goes and hangs out in the leaves or inside this sunken buddha head I put in there.

Very nice and beautiful. You can add blackwater essence to the water as it helps to create a natural habitat for the fishes and provides an important nutrients for the plant as well. 20ml or 40ml is fine, no harm at all even if you add more.

Tetras and bettas hey... No go! Trust me, once big enough, the Tetras will go after the betta's fins, and they will all go at it pretty recklessly, especially if you feed them live foods like brine shrimp and bloodworms. Lost my betta in a few hours, after living in that tank with the tetras for 2 years. The poor guy got ganked by the whole school. RIP.  And that was in a 40 gallons with 7 fishes total ^^

Vallisneria spiralis is the straight medium sized species from Asia. Spiralis refers to the spiral growth of the flower stalk, not the leaves. "Corkscrew val" is the one you are thinking of - its a selectively bred variant I believe, not a wild species.

I love those too!! I believe its vallisneria, or "jungle val". They come in straight-upright growing sp. like hers, and there's these cool others that grow spirally like. I'm still a "newb", but have been doing soooo much research, months of reading, and trying to see what plants I lwant for my second tank..with live plants this time : )

going along with what PopcornfrenzyYutub said, comets and commons are used as feeder goldfish. My neighborhood PetCo sells them for 25 cents. These fish are so mistreated and abused, and then fed to larger fish and reptiles.
I would recommend getting them and quarantining them because the stress they are in might cause a disease (easily treatable,) because then you will be saving money and rescuing the fish.
Someday, I want a fish pond along the exterior wall of my house with aquarium silicon so I can see into the pond from in my house and I want to put these guys in there.

Honestly I have 6 feeder goldfish in my 20 gallon tank with 1 male betta, 1 female betta, 8 fancy guppies, 5 feeder guppies, 6 neon tetras, 7 ember tetras, 3 cory catfish, 2 dwarf frogs, 1 crawfish, 8 ghost shrimps, 2 micro crabs, and 4 mystery snails. In other words it depends how you put them together, I've had all of them together for about 5 months going and it's still very lively.
AB W
AB W - 10 years ago
I would think with some other fish? They seem pretty docile, and non-agressive. But you would have to see what water temp. both prefer. Betta's and Goldfish would never work, for many reasons, but also because Betta's require warm, "tropical" type climate in tank, and Goldfish need cooler, non-heated tanks. There are some pretty cool Goldfish out there though! I was amazed at the variety of diff. kinds.

Used to have a ten gallon tank all set up with a betta. He would use the filtered water falling back into the tank like a water treadmill. So I got him two neon tetras and a black kuhli loach to have as tank mates. The tetras chased the betta more then the betta bothered them and the betta was very curious as to what the kuhli loach was. Lol. But never had a problem with fights or dead fish. They all ate together, swam together, and the betta still played with the filter water. They were all just fine.

Lindsey M

Bettas don't immediately die from having cold water. What happens is that their metabolism slows down making every metabolic process work twice as hard. Imagine where made you fight harsh winter temperatures your whole life. Not enough to kill you but enough to wreck havoc on your body. You would probably live to see 40 when you were meant to live to see 80. Your betta fish may life a year or 2 without his temperature being at 78F, but he was meant to live 4+ years.

Male bettas can be kept with other fish. From experience, they are aggressive towards fish that are bright in color; it probably triggers a fighting response in them as they are used to fighting other males that are also bright in display color. Platies are an example of fishes that will trigger the betta. They do well with non-nipping fish, especially ones with pale colors such as zebra danios. I kept a group of 9 danios with my male betta with zero fighting and nipping. As for bottom dwellers, you also have to be selective. Bristlenose plecos for example are aggressive feeders and they will attack your betta if their food is threatened. Bettas also rest at the bottom of the tank at night, so it's not good to have aggressive bottom feeders. Cory catfish are great and so are bamboo shrimp, other kinds of shrimps, and snails as well.
MintChocolate
MintChocolate - 7 years ago
SuperLocness I totally disagree. I've had my bristlenose pleco with two separate bettas and he doesn't touch their food at all. bristlenose plecos tend to prefer a mostly vegetarian diet and betta food usually floats at the top of the tank where most plecos don't seem to be very interested in hanging out anyway

I have recently found out that they do not like colorful shrimp such as cherry/fire shrimp or yellow shrimp. I don't know about guppies, especially when they are slow swimmers and can be colorful. I know this as some of my poor guppies tails were ripped when I got them. so I had to start getting them from a breeder

What are you thinking? Especially putting a video up of this! You do NOT keep these fish together, total fin nippage leaving to sick fish and fins all in the water causing ammonia to rise and before you know it they're all seriously ill or dead. Guppies are way too bright and bettas see this as a threat, fighting is caused and all the guppies are dead. THINK! Bettas are NOT calm and you clearly do not know how many guppies you have you WILL have lost some and they all look lose together to me! Would you want to live your life running and hiding, so cruel and NOT big enough!l!

You watch it cos you think it will be a nice fish tank but this is disgusting, poor things! I could play the same if you don't like my comment don't read this video is here to watch they put it there for the world to see, but it shouldn't be and have been reported for cruelty not just by myself but many!

If you do it right, you can have even questionable fish in with your betta. Each fish has its own personality. My community tank has 1 male crowntail betta, 5 glowlight tetras, 3 ember tetras, 3 glofish, 1 cory cat and 5 guppies. My betta has shown little interest in the guppies aside from curiosity and when they have stolen the food he was about to eat. I didnt even have to wait to add my betta til last either. He was already established in the tank before I even bought the other fish. Also, my tank doesnt have NEAR the hiding places available as this one. Yet my fish are perfectly fine. In fact my betta is the one that uses the hiding spots the most. Not all fish are the same. Take my Glofish as another example. I have the zebra danio type Glosish. They are supposed to be extremely social, especially with their own kind. Yet i have 1 Glofish that has taken to bullying the other fish in the tank. I even had problems with it bullying my betta, and he would  run away from the glofish. At least now he has started standing up for himself, but the most he will do is puff up at the glofish or nudge one of the little fish that steals his food. The only fin-nipping that's been going on has been the glofish bullying the other fish and the guppies chasing each other.
geminipinay
geminipinay - 11 years ago
Bettas have their own personalities and they aren't all extremely anti social fish. As someone who's had multiple bettas this video clearly explains the pro's and con's pretty well. In fact, you bring up good points but don't forget that this info is also out on the net that guppies are suitable tank mates regardless of their flashy fins. But it really does depend on your betta and the tank they all share.

My guppies are all ok and my betta fish is too. No dead fish. I understand that under most circumstances it does not work but I have an extremely mellow betta. Maybe its just pure luck on my part. I do mention in the video that it is usually not advised to put guppies with bettas. The reason I attempted this was A. I have a calm betta B. I have extra tanks so if the betta was aggressive I could move it to another tank with different fish C. I have years of experience in the fishkeeping hobby (although I do not know everything and am still learning). I understand your concern.

Lovely set up! It is very possible to have a community tank with a Betta! It all depends on his/her personality. I would recommend having another tank ready to go, just in case the Betta can not play nice. I have a very unlikely but happy set up, with two female Bettas, guppies and 2 Danio Glow Fish. Everyone gets along fine. The heavy planting does the trick. I am so lucky to have my two peaceful girls! But I have another tank ready to go in case they ever decide to not play nice!

Not true, you can make it work. I have a ten gallon tank with two guppies, 5 neon tetras, and a female betta and everything works out fine. No aggression or fighting of any sort, and I've had this tank for a while now. Sadly, my betta passed away of sickness, so the time she lived she didn't care about the guppies.

That is insane talk. Guppies are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 5, or they will stress and die. One gallon aquariums are inhumane for Bettas, don't believe the hype of Betta fish being fine living in a 1 gallon bowl, it's a lie and is cruel. They need to be in a minimum of 2.5 gallons, that's a MINIMUM. Bettas are fish and fish love to do what? Swim! Bettas don't come from puddles, they don't live in puddles and should not be kept in puddle sized tanks.

Bettas can coexist with certain other species in a community tank. Make sure that it has space that allow for the fish to hide. I kept a male betta in a tank that held guppies and emperor tetras. One small tetra, angry after being chased, came out from nowhere, nipped the betta and dove for cover. My mom and I were watching when this happened and cont. to remark on that.

Bettas can survive cold water. They /thrive/ in warm. Big difference. I think we get away with the poor betta care that we do simply because the fish are too damn hardy to die off. They will last many years in a big warm tank though :)

Bettas require very little room, and stress out in HUGE tanks. Most betas do great in 5-20g tanks depending on how its setup. The cups are a way to keep them from stressing out while on display as well as no netting them to bag.

Have you seen how they are shipped? In rows and rows of bags tied in knots with pockets of water and single fish in them. It's not stressful for the bettas because they are used to living in puddles that are full of mud and roots with not much space. Pretty basic knowledge.

I had baby guppies a couple months ago and just left them in the tank which was a bad idea. The other adults will try to eat them. Also, the babies need to be kept near the surface of the tank to allow access to air to properly fill their swim bladder and allow correct swimming. Sadly, I was not told this by the pet store when they sold me a pregnant fish and my babies all died :(

Betta spendens are lone wolves, they feel best in a tight planted tank they have on their own. If the Betta won't attack the fishes, it still will be stressed 24/7, which reduces the life span drastically. Even though literature says bettas reach an age of 2 years they can reach an age of 4 when kept well. Get an 20-30l tank, plant a lot of plants in it, reduce the water flow to a minimun and feed your betta with mosquito larva, daphnia or artemia.

People have kept all sorts of fish in the wrong ways, that doesn't make it right. Betta need high temperatures, and goldfish are cold water. It would be impossible for you to keep both fish properly in the same tank. Either one or the other (likely both) will suffer. Betta can live three to seven years, and goldfish can live ten or more-- how long did your fish "survive" in that setup?

Stunning tank! I normally don't like the look of grass in planted tanks but I love how you used it in this one. It almost looks like a kelp bed. What kind of snails do you have in there? I have ramshorn, pond, and Malaysian Trumpet snails in my betta community tank. I keep two flower shrimp and tetras in with the betta. Occasionally he'll try to start a fight. The fish are too fast for him and the snails and shrimp ignore him, lol. Great job on keeping a betta with guppies. That surprised me!

I am not sure about this lass but with my male betta in a community tank I also have 2 female bettas (one is his breeding partner), an angel and 3 guppies. They don't fight however it will entirely depend on your fish. i tried it many times and i saw; the guppies that red orange etc. tail colours are makes betta a bit anger and attacks them. also not eating their tails just hurts guppy and let them go. in planted aquariums other fishes must swim near plants when your betta thinks they are hiding and the area is its own they become uninterested but if u want great community please take just 1 agressive fish like betta and find the number of other fishes buy this formule below ;

Last of all, when you change out water, you are not "gettin rid of amonia." A tank with a properly set up biological filter will convert the ammonia for you. Water changes are helpful because they keep all toxins at bay, not just ammonia.

Nicole :) - 11 years ago
Porterhouse, you are woefully short on research. First off, the betta in this tank has no sign of fish rot, and I don't see any evidence of nipped fins. Secondly, the rule is a gallon of water for one inch of fish. 9 -10 fish is riding the line in a 20 gallon tank, but I'd be willing to bet she changes her tank water more often than you change your underwear. Thirdly, not all aquatic plants need to be "dirted" you fool. My favorite plant actually wraps around driftwood, not dirt.

Its a really beautiful community tank, the betta is almost playful with other fish, my betta would constantly attack the other tank mates and stealing their food on the floor even, so I had to isolate him into his own 5 gallon tank, its like a 50/50 chance that your betta cooperate with other fish.

I got a really good florescent light for the tank and I do weekly water changes. Most of my plants are low maintenance and really easy to grow hence why I don't need to do much else. :)

It is indeed better to to have less fish in a tank but fish won't just run out of oxygen if you have plants providing that and a filtration system that aerates the water as well. You can always use an air stone if there are no plants. My tank is still doing fine by the way. I don't add any co2 and my plants are still growing but I do regular water changes.

Very nice tank, Creative. I like the color, white sand and natural pond look. Beta seems very happy and guppies have enough places to hide. The slow, gentle filtration is peaceful and easy on the fish.

Hello! I have been having the hardest time with my planted aquariums. I've been trying to work on a natural 10g betta tank (my betta recently passed away and I am considering making it a community female betta tank). I am absolutely IN LOVE with this tank of yours! I can't seem to get my my plants to grow very tall and they grow so slow! What have you done to get the fullness that you have?

Our betta is so happy in a 25 gallon planted tank with six neon tetras, adding some corys soon. The plants definitely keep the betta so busy playing that he hasn't even taken much notice of the fact that the neons are schooling with him. =) Your tank is beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

Bettas and swords don't go together, but you can't keep a betta in a bowl. The ammonia would be sky high and you can't put in a heater. Remember, bettas are tropical fish.

I had a question on what kinds of plants you used in this tank. I am thinking of starting a betta community tank and I wanted to know what kinds of plants work well. I really like the plants you used in this tank. If you could do a video on plants and filters for betta's that would be awesome. I really like those long stringy grass like plant u have in there. I also have been trouble with filters with betta's that's why I asked if you could do a video on filters for them.

Tanks are better, you need a heater because bettas are tropical fish! you will see them move a lot in optimal temperature conditions! If they are in a bowl they have limited space. I suggest a fish tank and if its big enough add a school of neon tetras or maybe guppy

Yea, this whole "add a betta in my community tank" is a trial for me since its my first time dealing with betta fish and all I heard is that they are aggressive regardless of gender, but the way these fish look made me all "I have to get one"...but the sad part is that the male wont be a good addition because of their aggression. The males would have made my tank more attractive.

I've put my betta fish in my big tank with my other fish , It didn't attack them and they didn't too , but then it discovered a very tiny space near the filter machine and was always hiding in there , I started to worry and put it in the small cup again , any suggestion what shall I do ?
David Johnson
David Johnson - 11 years ago
No such contradiction has been made. Females are less likely to exhibit aggressive bevaviour than males but aggressive nevertheless. The reference was made to having multiple females, it not being recommended to house only a couple. Having one females is no different to having one male. I wouldn't advise adding a male to your tank however, your setup sounds good communally speaking :)
CaptainC0bra

All fish will eat fry, betta's will. If (like this this girl) you dont care about inbreeding guppies, bettas and guppies can be kept together, but 95% of fry will get eaten (depening on size/plants). Also its 50/50 if betta's will get on with livebearers. Ive had many over the last 10 years. Some are fine with male guppies, others will nip huge chunks out of the males. - Not nice with £35/$50 a pair guppies.

A betta would be fine in a 5 gallon, a 3 gallon is small but a betta fish will be happy as can be if you put it in anything bigger than the cup you buy it in, plus they dont really need a filter, water changes would be fine, also they dont really need water movement to oxygenate the water as they have an organ called the labrynth that lets them breath air, and depending on where you live they dont need a heater either if its warm enough
Inannah
Inannah - 12 years ago
All fish need filters, the filter holds beneficial bacteria that eat ammonia and nitrites in the water that will poison and kill your fish. It's not a good idea to put anything in a 3 gallon with a betta, except maybe a snail or two. That would be the absolute smallest size you should keep a betta in. Male betta and guppies are likely to end badly, it may work for this video poster, but it won't for most people, especially in a small tank.
