I love your tank!!! And hate that myth that keeps having people to acquire those tinny little cups with lonely bettas... i have a community tank with 5 male bettas and 5 female bettas. They all get along just fine! The 5 males grew up together so maybe that makes things a bit easier. And i have other types of fish in it as well. The only thing i wasnt able to do yet is to have my guppies in that community tank along side with my bettas as well.. my male bettas will simply not allow them there so i keep them in a separate tank with guppies only...

Some bettas are more chill than others, but they are a very territorial fish. if housed with a none-aggressive fish, they can get along. it depends on the betta as they are all different.
I have a large sorority in a 55 gallon tank housed with swordtails and guppies and they do just fine :)

I have a wonderful white female Betta who could care less about other fish in the tank, well she actually enjoys the company and thinks she's a neon tetra. I also just added new platies and the Betta is busy checking the gravel for food, lol.

If it is the glo danios (sometimes sold as tetras) then no. They are too nippy. In a tank that small I would probably stay away from it. If it is the tetras that I am thinking of then they will most likely be too big for the tank and the betta may get agitated.

my betta was in a little cup on a self by itself. I put a zebra snail and a tiger snail in there with him ( I have a 10 gallon ) my betta is almost a year old and he never has really bothered the snails besides just going over to them and looking at them. sometimes even when he sees there food he’ll just look, he’s just curious honestly. I mean I heard that some snails aren’t good to put with bettas because some bettas will bite at their “eyes” or whatever but my betta hasn’t so I’m just wondering if that means my betta is actually nice and I can add tank mates easily?

I had extremely good luck so far with my betta, over the past week I've introduced ghost shrimp, small ottocats, and a school of neon tetras so far, and no problems at all. I made sure to put plenty of places for the fish to hide just in case, and the only problem I had at first was he tried chasing the shrimp a bit at first until he figured out he'd never catch them. I think that's mostly due to the way he seems extremely food oriented (like if my dog was a fish :P). He's just been curious to the algae eaters and tetras, but never nipped at them, just investigating them. I want to finally experiment with a small school of guppies (5 or 6) and I think that'll be it for this tank. Seems promising since my betta is so docile, so here's to hoping!

I had a aggressive guppy (it's litteraly called a aggressive guppy) it was bred to be aggressive, but I thought it was just a normal fancy guppy, I put it in with my Betta and other guppys, it injured one guppy so bad. (it healed) then it attacked my betta... i ve never seen a fish get killed by another fish so fast, the guppy was DEAD In 15 seconds, my betta beat the f*** out of it

I have a female Betta in a 10g with 3 make Guppys. I'm gonna get 2 more Guppys and a nerite snail. I had a mystery snail and the Betta was kinda aggressive to it but the snail died because it hid in its shell for a week and the trapdoor was jammed.

Bettas CANNOT go with goldfish!? Goldfish are cold water fish and bettas are tropical!
FlipGaming
FlipGaming - 6 years ago
They can though. It’s a misconception that they are cold water fish. They live in both warm and cold waters.
Jen Jung
Jen Jung - 6 years ago
You lost all your creditability. Never house goldfish with bettas or angelfish. Tropical water fish should never be with goldfish.

+LexisClark depends on the betta you get. I offset with heavy plant load and water changes

How can you tell if it's calm In the store? Or if it's docile?
Britney Price
Britney Price - 7 years ago
What you do is place the cup with the betta you are interested in next to another betta cup. If they start to flare and show their beard they are aggressive. Try doing this a few times before deciding if the betta is really aggressive or stays calm. Eventually you should be able to find one that is calm or run out of fish to test. If that happens try another fish store or find out when they get more bettas in.
FlipGaming
FlipGaming - 7 years ago
I have found that Bettas that don't react to others beside them are more calm then ones that flare up around other bettas.

True stuff. I worked at an aquarium store a few months ago and I was not allowed (still did) to recommend betta community tanks due to their individual behavior. Research and ask questions on forums and stuff opposed to pet stores as there are some fish they have to say no to.

PetStores Sellers Sometimes have to be more careful and always play safe.I didnt even ask them about the compatibility of fishes bc i already knew what answer they gonna give me.Different fish have different behaviours some might be more peaceful or more agressive so i always do my own research about fish compatibility

It's derived from the Malay word Betah which was used for the classification of the genus. Bet-uh is better than Bae-tah but uh, what chance do we have with the likes of reading in Reading, where you wear the right clothes and write about here whilst you hear planes sounding plain. We're lost to confusion, next to the weir.

My tank was heavily planted with a small ecosystem providing live food constantly which may have stopped aggression. One thing is for sure though - no fish should be in a 4 litre tank!

Birds corner Yup. Its Betta not Beta. Some Bettas are aggressive but Betta Splendens (as seen here) is usually fine. I had 5 males in large one tank with 15 females and all was fine. Its usually the Betta that gets harrassed by fin nippers. Maybe, like humans, they get territorial when a castle is present...

Hi! I just video, your tips are so helpful! I wish I had seen this sooner!

I've had my betta fish for about a little over 3 months and he is very playful and docile. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed that his 2.5 gallon was getting brown algae so I thought he needed to get a tank mate that is a bottom feeder. I did research and I came down to choosing either otto catfish or ghost shrimp. However, the biggest I can go for a tank was 5 gallons. I was able to get in contact with another youtuber that owns more than 5 betta fish so I asked for advice. They suggested to get the shrimp for the 5 gallon because it wouldn't be enough room for the catfish.

A week ago from today, 4/2/17. I bought 2 japanese algae eating shrimp (petstore ran out of ghost shrimp) because I already had the 5 gallon tank and was ready to start the process. I first put the shrimp in the tank before the betta. After a good while of the shrimp calming down and not swimming around so fast, I was able to put my betta in the tank. There was chasing but nothing so aggressive because my betta, Henry. He would chase it for a few seconds then turn away because he was just curious. As if he saw another fish for the first time in his life. (When I bought him, he was only 6 months old so to me he is a baby)

I kept an eye on them. I saw Henry that his fin was nipped but I was pretty sure that had happen because of me cause I was taking too long to pick him up with the fish net and most likely stressed him out. Still, I kept an eye on them, No aggressive fighting and it seemed like everything was fine.

Second day came, Henry got a nipped on his fin again. That was his second one and I was too scared to see another one. So I set up his 2.5 gallon where he was originally in and made sure to separate him from the shrimps.

I have a couple theories why he was getting nipped.

1.) Henry and one of the shrimp are the same size. Could the shrimp size affect the nipping?
2.) Shrimps were not EATING. I gave them cory wafers, pellets and flakes that Henry wouldn't eat. They weren't eating what was being left over so.... Could the shrimps attack my betta because of hunger?
3.) Tank size. Could this mean that 5 gallon tank was not enough room for the 3 of them together?

This is what I thought of.... I'm still glad I had separated them cause when I did. There wasn't anymore nips and Henry started swimming around more actively again.

However, I did notice something today, 4/1/17, Henry's nip has a third but close to his first nip. I'm guessing it's from a plastic plant that I had in the 5 gallon but transfered it to 2.5 with Henry to have more "hiding spots". I immediately took it out. I'm not sure if I ever want to try again with Henry and tank mates but maybe in the far future when his fins heal, I can try again.

I'm fixing the "no eating" event from shrimps cause I bought a marimo ball and algae waffers. I'm super hoping that they will like it. I will be testing it out tonight.

Please, I need advice and some sort of fact of where I went wrong with my betta and my shrimps? Cause I don't want my shrimps to claim the 5 gallon tank, I've been researching cobra gubbies but I won't buy any until I know what went wrong with the betta and shrimps so I won't make the same mistake with the gubbies and shrimp. Please, your advice will be so helpful.

Thank you for takning your time to read my long message. I hope you have a good day or night!
Cyn Drawing
Cyn Drawing - 7 years ago
FlipGaming You are right, I ended up realizing that it was my betta that nipped himself. I had retried having him the 5 gallon because I realize what we're my mistakes and that's why I tried again. There was a little chasing and everything is fine. until an hour later, my betta killed the small shrimp. So now it's just the big one and himself and they are.... or Henry is getting used to the idea of having company in his tank. Thank you so much for replying and taking your time to read my message!

FlipGaming - 7 years ago
The tank size was probably too small, but I never heard of shrimps nipping. Most shrimp pick at algae and plant matter. I have a hard time believing your shrimp are causing you problems. Maybe next time go with a bigger tank just in case. How much are you changing your water and how often?

I have had a male and female with some guppies together in a tank for about two months then my male died. I attempted to get another beta but it was super duper aggressive and even attacked my full grown female who is super mellow. I removed the aggressor immediately. I'm new to betas just getting them for Christmas. My past male was already in a tank with other fish such as barbs angel fish and even a butterfly fish. I'm gonna go get a different male tonight so this video helped me so much.

Most likely yes. I have seen it before, but it is extremely rare. just to be on the safe side always keep bettas alone unless you have a large enough tank to hold many females. They could have also been chill due to fighting and getting tired. I have seen that before too

FlipGaming that's strange. like i said im new to betas but i love the fish. but was I then just lucky with my first male beta? because i had a male and female together and they were completely chill with each other but he was also im a tank with other fish before coming to me with a female I got separately. was i just lucky then I presume?

Never ever ever ever ever house a male betta with any other betta. The male will kill the female. Male bettas can be housed with other fish other then bettas. For female bettas to work you need ~5 or more. Glad this video helped!

I currently have a betta fish in a 1 gal. tomorrow I'm going to get him a bigger 10 gal. he was really aggressive at first but now my betta eats from my fingers, comes to me, jumps for food, and even let's me "pet" it. such a sweetie. I'm going to try to get a tank mate for him. I was leaning more towards ghost shrimp since they are bottom feeders.. but now I'm wondering, maybe my betta would be okay in a community tank :)

I'm learning all the time, about another species of fish. They are very attractive, I guess that is why they sell easily in pet shops but, they never look 'happy' in the shops. I have a spare 40 (litre) I think that is about 10 gal..?? and I would love to have a betta male, maybe a couple of females and a bit of a community tank, just in the family room ( not the 'fish' room, no one wants to go in there but me :) ) Great video, I will keep researching but I am getting a good 'picture' of what I can and cannot do with these fascinating fish! Thanks.

Thanks! I'm in Australia so Aquabid might have trouble with transport :) I have a half moon male now, he is brilliant blue (dark head) with red and purple streaks through his fins. He is in his 10gal (40 litre here) tank with 10 neon tetras, heavily planted tank and the past 24 hours have improved his colour, activity and attitude. I bought him at LFS and I just asked ,"Who has been here the longest?" 'Alpha' was one that had been there for a few weeks in a cup of water in a display tank. I won't get into buying females yet, I need to keep learning and collecting tanks, lol.... thanks for your reply :)
FlipGaming
FlipGaming - 7 years ago
+Holly Samsonator no problem! Bettas are awesome fish and would do great in a living room. For males the rule of thumb is don't house them with any other bettas or long fin fish. For females they need 4+ to get along (figured that out the hard way). Being very hardy you can drop $60 on a fish and not really have to worry about them dropping dead. Go on aquabid and look at the bettas there. You may find some awesome colours you like!! A 10g is perfect for them and they will be incredibly happy

How long have these fish been living together?
I had a pair of (young)yoyo loaches with a betta for awhile(they were going to be moved in with the big fish when they grew up). They were fine, for 4 or 5 months, when one morning I woke up seeing the betta laying on his side on an anubias, with the two loaches nipping at his fins, which were now maybe half what they had been(they grew back even more beautifully, actually. He is a crowntail).
So just curious how long this has lasted?
FlipGaming

+Tyler P a few more months after this and then unfortunately my tank died. They were most likely nipping once he died. All fish will nip at dead fish

I had my Betta (veil-tail male) in a divided tank with two African dwarf frogs on the other side. Somehow (after a few days) the frogs got through the barrier and into Betta's side of the tank. Betta wasn't too happy about that when I discovered it (luckily it was early enough!). So I put Betta back into his original tank. I have the tanks sitting next to each other right now but do you have any tips for getting these guys to be in the same tank? Should I keep them separated for now and just remove the barrier for the frogs and eventually put Betta back? I have noticed the heavy plants and hiding spaces in other videos so I know that I definitely need more plants in my tank.

I now have a 5.5 gal guppy tank and I am starting a 10 gal tank with the guppies and I want to stick one of my bettas in there with them. I can't decide which betta. I have one who is absolutely a no go. One who doesn't care if my other betta's tanks are near by but I just put his tank next to the guppy tank to see what he would do and he was following the guppies in his own tank. The other betta is still in the cup because I just got him and I stuck him near both my bettas and he didn't react and near the guppies and no reaction. I just really wanted my other calm one to go in with the guppies because I have had him a lot longer and hes really pretty.

Right now I have one with 5 cherry barbs, three goldfish, 7 neon tetras, 2 black skirt tetras, 1 pleco, and another female betta. Then I have a female betta in a 10 galling guppy tank with 2 catfish, and 3 guppies. Soon to be more guppies because a few months ago they had babies. And I had a male in a community tank. He was fine. I was really young so I don't remember what he looked like or what the other fish were but he was fine. And I put two males together and they were fine. I put a divider in the tank still because I didn't want to take the chance.

FlipGaming Goldfish can be in higher temperatures but they won't be thriving. Yes they can accept a wide range of temperatures but both the tropical and cold water fish will probably be agitated by the temperature (which is probably at the top or bottom of their ranges) I'm also surprised your goldfish didn't eat your other fish. Your tank is also overstocked if you have that many species in one 30 gallon.

I'd say some hardier fish like platys, and all danio species because of what pH guppies like (6.5-7) I have my guppies with 5 giant danios, 5 platys, 3 skirt tetras, 5 scissortail rasboras, 2 bloodfin tetras, one pleco, 4 zebra danios ( two long finned ) and 1 leopard danio and 1 pearl danio. All living happily together.

This would be the video to watch to see how to do it! I personally have never had to do it myself. This guy is really good for stuff like this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Meyb2JYCU

+Some Toad just get some aquarium sealer and seal all corners! let it sit for 24 hours and then fill with water in the garage to check for leaks!

+FlipGaming Sounds good :)

I just looked again today after having the tank sit in a garage for about a week, (with nothing in it), that the sealant is essentially gone on all of the corners. What all do you need to reseal a tank?

+Some Toad I have some panda corys with mine! They are fantastic bottom feeders and will eat any flakes that fall to the bottom! If you don't care to save the fry of the guppies then neon tetras would be good!

I have a five gallon tank and it would be cool to get guppies as well as the betta, depending on the temperament. I kind of want a blue female and a red male, naming them sole and Hancock for reasons...

I have a 5 gallon tank with a peaceful Bettas and was wondering how many fancy guppies can I put with it, it has plenty of cover.

Oscar Hernandez I wouldn't put any. A 5 gallon is not suitable for any more animals other than a snail or shrimp.

+Oscar Hernandez 1-2 years usually. takes about 3 months for the babies to mature.

+FlipGaming Oh, how long do guppies live for. I'm doing some research before I purchase them.

+Oscar Hernandez once a month usually. Most of the babies won`t make it so you don`t have to worry too much about having too many. you could but they don`t live very long hence why they reproduce so fast.

+FlipGaming How often do they reproduce. Could I have just males so I don't have to worry about them having baby's?

I would put 3 max (1 male and 2 female). They reproduce like crazy so while 3 doesn`t seem like a lot the females will be impregnated within the first day (if they aren`t already). Make sure you keep an eye on your betta just to make sure they will get along!
