Fishy Bubble Hey! So my sisters betta fish is pregnant. We never mated the fish so I get she mated before we got her. Idk what to do. Like us she able to give birth and put them in a bubble nest on her own? It randomly put in my male. And what do we do after they are born? Please help! We did not over feed her? I have never had this happen and I'm sorry if I sound stupid.

Kayla Smith:3 Females will get larger bellies from time to time just the natural prices of having eggs ready but they never get fertalized, this is normal. I would not put males and females together without significant research because without proper introduction the male will kill the female. The male is the one to take care of the eggs and fry and it is very difficult to breed Betta fish because the babies need live food.

So I want to start breeding my Berta and he already made his bubble nest. Does this mean that I can skip some steps of breeding? If so what steps?
Gamerboy70
Gamerboy70 - 7 years ago
Got2LoveFish ok thank you. If my betta gets aggressive with the bubble nest, that would mean he is a male because his tail isn't too big but yet he also isn't very old. I just want to make sure he is a male.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
Gamerboy70 You should still do all the steps because now the female still needs to be prepared for breeding by seeing the male. You just dont have to wait for the male to get ready as long, but he still needs to see the female.

Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
As explained in this video bubble nests can be built for many different reasons, happy, sad, bored, wanting to mate, its fun, etc. I don't really think anyone truly knows why they are built. I would not worry that your betta is lonely, as long as he has a big enough tank and things to explore, including watching you. Then he should be fine. You can find out more if you check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nx2kr2YNpEY&t=2s

We are new to Betta fish. Is our Betta fish sick if it is lying around at the bottom of the fish tank and doesn't swim a lot? We have a few things in the water for it ( live plant, snail, and a pineapple to swim in an out of).
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
Angie Zoldowski Did you just get him, does the tank have a filter, how big is the tank and how often are water changes done? This will help me see if he may be sick from something or if he is bored or stressed.

my beta makes nest all the time but sometimes when i check on him throughout the day I notice that the nest isn't in a cluster anymore and it looks like her destroys it. is this normal?
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
Madilyn Bagley Thats good, I don't think you should worry, he probably would like a larger tank and the real plants will definentally not hurt his fins like plastic ones tend to do. Also bloodworms are a great source of protein for fish but that is basically all they are so it is best to give them as a treat once or twice a week and feed Betts pellets regularly, 3 or 4 pellets a day, that contain a better balanced diet.
Maddie Bags
Maddie Bags - 7 years ago
my bad I meant gal
Maddie Bags
Maddie Bags - 7 years ago
Yes it's just my one male in the tank. Should I worry? He looks a lot better since I brought him home from the pet store and I feed him bloodworms. He is in a 1.5lb tank right now I'm debating on upgrading him to a 5lb with real plants? I've seen get snagged on a plastic plant and I took it out immediately. Any tips to make him maybe less bored ? (when I do 100% water changes I rearrange the tank so he has variety)
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
Madilyn Bagley Is it just the male in by himself? If so he may destroy it out of boredom or playfulnes or curiosity, it is typically them just doing something to do something because that don't need the bubble nest to stay there. Also if there is a filter or air stone that could mess it up.

I have a community tank. In it I have 4 Danios (GlowLight) 4 Neon Tetras 2 Amano Shrimps and my two Bettas. The female Betta is carrying eggs is there a specific plant leaf I need to buy for the male to make his nest? And hoe to prevent any aggression among the other fishes in the tank? I am fairly new at this hobby. Cheers!
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
The aggression in the tank with those fish should be pretty low. The male Betts will build a bubble nest wear the water does not move, so if you take a plastic or Styrofoam cup and cut it in half and then tape it to the side open side down it creates a place where the male can make it. The problem I see right now is that they may or may not want to breed with other fish around. I am also ki d of surprised they Re getting allowed g right now. If they are not ready to breed the female may just drop the eggs. Make sure you watch plenty of videos and look at plenty of articles and forums to get as much information about needing bettas as possible, that can have a lot of babies, such will eventually become aggressive, and that typically need to be given live food when young, they are not a easy fish to raise.
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 7 years ago
What size tank is it? That is the biggest thing I need to know to help determine what needs to be done to keep down aggression, smaller tanks will cause fish to be aggressive because they are to crowded and larger tanks need lots of hiding places.

I bought a betta 2 days ago and he made a bubble nest on the side of the filter.. now he's aggressive and tries to get there but the streaming of the filter pushes him back... doesn't that stress him out by constantly swimming to the bubble nest but being pushed back? Probably because you tried to destroy his nest. The nest is for holding the eggs.
SmartThrob

He probably doesn't like you invading his territory. Bettas are territorial fish. Another reason could be that you are attempting to destroy a project that takes effort and patience. Destroying it may not go well with your Betta.

Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
A filter is good to have in the tank, it has tons of benefits. What you can do if you would like to you can either move the filter up or down to make it so the top of the water does not have as many waves or block of a corner of the tank with something like a straw so that it kind of blocks the waves. Even if the water is still a betta may not build a bubble nest.

Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 9 years ago
Unlike what most sources say, a bubble nest does not mean they are happy. You can tell they are happy if they are always swimming around and exploring their environment, they should never rest for extended periods of time but a quick little rest then going back to swimming is fine. He should be engaged when you come over to the tank and be curious, even if he is hiding and just looking out from behind a plant. Basically a healthy happy betta is always moving and exploring, that is why they like their tank changed up every once in a while.

so do you need to create a place in the tank for him to build a under  such as a leaf or substitute
Got2LoveFish
Got2LoveFish - 10 years ago
You should no have male and female bettas together, the males are very territorial and may kill the females, and they build bubble nests when they want not always when females are present, I would highly recommend taking the male out, it will be less stressful for all the fish.

no you do not need to they will just make it in the corner if they want, if they feel like making one they will make it but if they don't they wont so it does not really matter if there is a leaf or something to make it under or not, if that all made sense, haha, so no you don't (:
