Nice tank. I am currently setting my 40 gallon tank, hoping to add GBR to my community which incidentally also has a betta fish in. How are you finding the two species cohabiting..any issues? By the way I am loving the wood arch thing you got going on, where did you get it from. Thanks

My crown betta is the most peaceful chilled fish in my entire tank lol The lady at the aquarium store where I got him told me they are not normally aggressive towards other fish only other bettas. I don’t know if it’s true or not but it seems he couldn’t care less about other fish he shows more interest in humans than his tank mates. He follows us if we come close hoping for a treat. They’re pretty cute.

Bettas go after other fish that look and act like them (Other Bettas, Guppies, Gouramis, etc.). German rams don't really fit that profile, so yes, bettas are unlikely to go after them. Also, most bettas would be too slow to catch German rams anyway (especially like the one in the video with extra long fins from breeding), so no big deal there either. The German Rams may eventually go after the betta as they get older, more confident in the tank, and especially when that pair of Rams starts breeding...that is where they get really aggressive. The schooling fish and catfish will probably be fine as they are very different and non-threatening. However, the betta may resemble enough of a colorful cichlid to the rams for them to eventually go after him when they establish a nest. But yeah, toss in guppies, gouramis, or possibly a flowy-finned gold fish in there, and the betta will most likely go after any of those.

Thank you for posting your video, and giving follow up information in the comments. If it is of any interest to you, Betta is pronounced "bet-tah", cichlids is "sick-lids", pleco is "pleck-oh", oto cats are "oh-toe" color loss is "lawse" not loose. I was mispronouncing some of those words for years until I met other aquarists face to face and learned the error of my ways.

JUST WATCHED THIS VIDEO AND IS VERY NICE ALL THE FISH GETTING ALONG.. BUT OF COURSE NO ONE HERE TOUCHED THE MAIN TOPIC. YES THE CURRENT IS A BIT MUCH FOR THE BETTA.. BUT WANNA KNOW WHY YOU DON'T HAVE ISSUES WITH THE RAMS FIGHTING OTHER FISH OR FIGHTING WITH THE BETTA?.. THE RAMS YOU HAVE ARE A PAIR SECOND THEY ARE PAIRED OFF AS WELL. MEANING THEIR AGGRESSION IS LESS INVOLVED ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU DON'T HAVE ANOTHER RAM OF THE SAME SPECIES. TRY PUTTING ANOTHER RAM AND YOU WILL SEE WHAT HAPPENS! ALSO BETTA HAS HIS OWN HOME TO HIDE IN WHICH IS ANOTHER THING THAT HELP SINCE THE RAMS HAVE A SIDE THEIR DEFENDING! I LOVE BOTH FISHES RAMS AND BETTAS! OVER ALL BUDDY, GOOD JOB!

How often do you wash your fish or allow them to take showers? Are they allowed to be let outside when it's raining for fresh air? Do you take them to the local LFS to check out new stuff for the tank? Do you take your to your local fresh water ponds in the summer months to be able to get great exercise that no tank smaller than 100 gallons can provide it? Things that make you go Hmmmm LOL

Too, too, too much current for a Betta. They are not good swimmers and like calmer water. He's getting blown around pretty good in your tank. You have to find a way to cut down that current.

Way too much current for a betta. They can be (somewhat) community fish, but the water has to be calm, almost still. Which doesn't lend to good gas/oxygen transfer, etc..

I have beta and his swims and eat a lot with my guppies and tetras . He's happy with my other fish but when he wants to sleep or rest he will go between my plants. They are in 10 g , they are 7 all in there with shrimp and snail, they never fight, in 2 days or so they will move in 32g. With more plants and bogwood.

You have to have some current or you would have a dirty gross tank, but they need a buffer for the current
A betta being with other fish is perfectly happy and fine as long as it is the right types and big enough tank
Hunting Wolf
Hunting Wolf - 8 years ago
Whether aggressive or not, they aren't "happier" with more fish. Oh they LOVE to hunt fry, so in that they would be perfectly happy with guppies having babies all the time. But aggressiveness with bettas, often, get them killed in community tanks. You either have to worry about a betta getting it's fins ripped to shreds and miserable, or if aggressive worry about other fish. And it isn't even a case of aggressive, or non aggressive, they WILL NOT be happy with any current in the water. One reason he is non aggressive in this tank, cause the poor bastard can barely SWIM!

I have kept fish for 40 years. Been keeping marines exclusively for the last 15 years and have come back to temperate and tropicals only to find that apparently now all fish have gone psychopathic and can't be kept with anything! I don't know when fish became so hell bent on murder but if you were to believe what you read these days Bettas want to kill everything with any colour and goldfish have gone mad. What a load of BS. I had bettas and tetras and dwarf cichlids together or decades with no issues. I don't know why suddenly people are saying you can't keep bettas and rams together but considering they generally are both reasonably peaceful and generally reside at opposite ends of the tank ie bettas usually stay on top and rams at the bottom why would there be an issue? Well done for the tank etc looks good but I do agree with others on here your poor betta is being tortured by the water flow hence why he is trying to hide in the caves. The big fins are a problem in tanks with strong flow I would try and see if you can at least redirect your flow so that part of the tank is getting less get rid of the circulation pump you don't need such strong flow in a tropical tank and maybe try putting on a spray bar n your return or house your betta elsewhere.

Snowy Wolfgirl I was actually recommended a crown betta as a peaceful fish by my store so long as there are no other bettas in my tank. So far he is the most peaceful little dude I have ever met. My two male guppies who were tank mates in the store however now hate each other’s guts and seem determined to see who can bite who’s tail off first. I think my crown betta is the favourite fish I’ve ever had. I like him more than my gourami’s lol

mine died.. turned out the cherry barb had a parasite that he spread to her :(  I forgot the name but its the one where you see red spikes sticking out the ass.. I was sad, she stopped eating and about 2 weeks after the cherry barb died she died too.. I should have known better then to put a random fish in my tank.. I should have quarantined the cherry and I woulda noticed it had worms sticking out its ass and my beautiful ram would still be alive.. :( face to palm

+Coolnicknameguy Thanks both of you, although my tank is only 15 gallons im running an eheim classic 250 canister filter so water quality is good. I have driftwood and lots of live plants in the tank now. So hopefully it will go well. Whats a good temperature to keep the water at? ive heard tetras don't like anything above 80f and rams like 78f or above so is 78f a good temp? :P

+Jack smith I got a blue ram  alone in a 6.6gallon. She is happy, begs for food like a dog dancing around every time she sees me,  I keep hearing the water must be 7ph but mine comes out the tap at 9 and she is still just fine.. what I found and someone else explained too is that they are supper picky about water quality! so no ammonia, no nitrite and no nitrate.. so that being said keep German blue rams in cycled tanks that you do 30% water change every 72 hours or its not the fish for you. Mine is a messy eater and likes hew water clean so yeah Im doing 30% water changes every 3 days, hence why shes in my 6.6gallon and not my 20 or 40 gallon, its easier to swop 1 or 2 gallons then 5 to 10 gallons every 3 days. Hope that helps, I have only had this one shes my first but I have had her going on 3 months now. She will however pick on other fish during feeding to the point my cherry barb died in a cave of starvation hiding from her. I couldn't put him in my other tank cause there's 6 cherry barbs twice his size they woulda killed him for sure, that tank is like gladiator arena, never get 6 male cherry barbs, they are not a schooling fish like everyone thinks they don't like one another and do nothing but fight all day every day! I could calm this with ugly ass female cherry barbs but who wants ugly fish taking up space fucking and making more fish to take up space. I suggest 2 or 3 cherries at the most

+Jack smith german blue rams are not the easiest to take care as compare to platies and neons from my experience. i've heard many rams die after 1 week or so if they cannot adopt to new water parameters or if they are too stressed etc. but if your tank has room for swim, and live plants to cover them if they become shy, it will help to reduce their stress (they like to stay at the bottom of the tank) and because you introduce them to your aquarium make sure the water is fully cycled and clean, as rams are more sensitive to the change of temperature or status in water than tetras, and other common fish. lastly, i would recommend to get them in pairs, 1 male 1 female (best). from my experience, rams will be fine just by itself in a tank as long as there are other fish in the aquarium, but if only one ram is in the tank, its color will likely to fate-out in a few days. to bring the best of their color it is recommended to have at least a pair. if you are afraid of having fry or aggression when you have a male and a female, than 2 female is fine (never 2 female 1 male or 2 male 1 female). but honestly i wouldn't worry about having a male and a female, because it is not that easy for blue rams to breed, the right atmosphere and condition needs to be met first, then since your tank is 15G, and has other fish in it, there wouldn't be much room for them to lay their eggs without worrying that other fish will end up eating them. even if a few survived and became fry, those fry will most likely be eaten before you noticed. as to aggression in blue ram, from my experience, they are usually peaceful, they should not have any issues with platies and neons at all.
Jack smith
Jack smith - 8 years ago
+David Fitzmaurice Are german blue rams difficult to look after? I have a 15 gallon with 6 neons. Im going to be getting 2 female platies tomorrow, then hopefully 1 ram or a pair of rams. Do you know if they are alright alone or is a pair the way to go? I just dont want to deal with fry or agression.

You have money for all those fish but can't afford a single 9-volt battery for your smoke alarm?  How can you even talk for 12 minutes with that beeping?!!    You and your fishies are going to burn up in a fire when your sleeping.  The nocturnal glass cats will try to warn you but you can't hear them crying out for help:  "It burns us"...   And Bettas hate fire.  It makes them really angry because its so bright and colorful.  CHANGE YOUR BATTERY

Many fish psychologist suggest to use a "White Noise" such as a quiet fire alarm beep sounds to simulate the fishes mother's heartbeat. Keeps the fish calm & disease free states for much longer.

Plus it'll take 20-45 minutes before a firetruck is dispatch to the home location to apply truck loads of water to extinguish the any flames. The fish already are in water, they know the real deal. They'll be safe while the owners have a 50/50 shot at being able to swim another day :) LOL

Hi blue ram are very difficult to keep, I got from a local aquarium store that has been around my area for many years and the place is highly rated by fish hobbies. My male died in June, I think they are kinda of hard to keep for long, but It is my first time owning a pair of Rams, my female is still alive so I guess maybe the male was stressed?

"fishes" is actually correct when talking about more that one kind of fish within the tank.

if a tank only has guppies in it you'd say "he has many fish in his tank." but if he has a community tank with more than one particular kind of fish it's ok to say "he has many fishes in his tank."
