So how do you sell off the extra fish? I really want to try breeding, but I can't support the extra fry if they arent' sold. Do you sell them to LFS or online? What is the backup plan? Thank you so much.

I wanna breed my beta fish because it’s a gorgeous red color and I’m saving for a bigger tank and a heating thing so I can get another fish and breed them. I saw a very very pretty purple beta fish that’s a girl since I have a boy already. I was wondering if that would be a good color combination for a dark purple with a tint of red in the tail.
Brieanna Schwab

Lifewithpets ok, ty.
Lifewithpets

If you breed a red betta you will likely got mostly, if not all red babies no matter what the other betta is. Red is the dominant color.

Approximately how much money did you Spend for the entire thing?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 5 years ago
If you don’t have the tanks etc to start with it would be very expensive. You need a breeding tank, growout tank, live foods, brine shrimp hatchery, then lots of frozen or live foods as they get bigger. Lots of suitable jars, that you need to find a way to keep heated. Breeding is both time consuming and expensive. We had a lot of these supplies already.

We did about 2 cups worth of water. The tank was only filled half way so we did a water change twice a week and the rest of the week we added a fresh cup of water to the tank every 2 days till the tank was filled to the top. By then it was about week 3 and we did water changes every other day.

Do you need to separate the fry at a certain point in time? As in, do they become aggressive to each other like bettas do? Also, did you remove the father when they were hatched?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 5 years ago
Yes, once they start to show aggression you need to jar them until they’re ready to go to their new homes.

They need live foods for the first few weeks. This encourages them to eat. Baby brine shrimp are the easiest along with micro and banana worms.

These are gorgeous! Me and my husband have always had fish, we have a 75 gal with peacocks in there. It’s so much fun. And now I want to try something that I’ve always wanted..... betas! I need help deciding which to have, which to breed, which aren’t so aggressive and more questions. Who or where is the best information that I can get to help me figure out what type of betas are for me?

Hey there Sheila! I'm considering setting up a guppy reeder tank for profit. I am absolutely new to the hobby. I have don a lot of reasearch. Do you even think I should do that or should I just keep a simple guppy tank. Any tips?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
I would wait until you have been keeping a tank successfully for a while. Maintaining a balanced tank is what is need for a breeding tank for profit due to all the babies born. It requires more work than a regular tank.

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Unfortunately I’ve only had dropsy once and I was not able to treat it successfully. Dropsy is usually not curable although a few people have been successful. I think it really depends on how early it’s caught.

The Real Tori
The Real Tori - 6 years ago
Jalyn Watson make sure your filter intake has something over it so they don’t get sucked up in the filter. If you have fish in the tank that might be harmful to the newborns you will need to buy a breeder net for your tank or get another tank for the babies so they won’t get eaten. Also to feed them, you can go to any petsmart or petco and they have newborn fish food that’s small enough for them to eat if you want to do it the easy and cheap way. Good luck!

Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Either every day or every other day I do 50-60% water changes. When fish are young they produce a growth hormone inhibitor to stop the fish around them from growing, so you need to water change a lot to dilute it otherwise the fish become stunted.

i noticed that a couple of fry lack ventral fins, it honestly a matter of aesthetics and it doesn't really affect the wellbeing of the fish but this occurrence seems more apparent. But i do like the organic natural setup you have for your spawn tank than your commercial breeder that has everything barren. Heres you breeding your first spawn whilst ive been debating for months whether to get ottos to live with my one betta in a 16 gallon aquarium or not...
