This is NOT the right way to do it.. You won't get 800-1000 fry with this system.. And you will make the female suffer from beating and the males suffer from exhaustion
Julian tho
Julian tho - 7 years ago
+1/4ganoi Things you said is also true.. But not "the most" important.. The most important is water level.. since they are unable to swim in early stage.. Everyone that breed betta know that fact.
1/4ganoi
1/4ganoi - 7 years ago
my friend the most important to keep many fries alive,u need to change water(aged water at the same temperature.1/4 new water).Keep air above warmer than the water if not many fries will die because when the labyrinth is forming the fries will try to breath air.

+David Beck 3 feet of water is diving? Dumb ass.. I told you, prove the world that i'm not a diver.. You CAN'T.. Because i'm a diver..
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho People can dive at 6 just not by them selves and with a parent and its in like 3 feet of water and you have no right to call me a liar after you calling yourself a diver
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck diving at 6?????? Now you switch from inconsistent to liar.. Ok, bye now.. You're not worth debating
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho it kind of is hard to remember cause I was like 6 when my first time was and I'm 32 so that's pretty long and saying "once or twice" isn't inconsistent in America we say that if we aren't sure so it's not like we are lying. The Diver thing for you anyone with a brain could tell that's a lie it was to perfect for you to be a diver with my
Statement before. Nothing is wrong with my statements. Nothing is wrong with Urs we can't say if something is right or wrong if we have never tried it so u have no right once so ever to say I'm wrong
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck I said i am diver to answer your point about me dont know anything about water pressure.. It has nothing to do with the fish at all..

Your statement is the problem, and you hope they were backing up each other.. Bad news, THEY DONT..!!

Fry die in water pressure AND high water level for breeding is correct.. <---------- How in the hell does these two not inconsistent?

You're the master of inconsistent..
You said ".........divers and I've done it once or twice" <---------- make up your mind, once OR twice? It's not hard to remember is it?
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho Just cause I have more Than 1 statement to back me up doesn't make it inconsistent
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho I gave reasons like how they are fragile and couldn't stand it and when you said u were a diver it worked out to well with what I said if it were just I grow up near water that would have been fine but a diver is no. And I know divers and I've done it once or twice.
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck When you make a statement, prove it. How can you said i'm not a diver? When you said deep water is good for fry and continue by saying fry dies from water pressure, this is a very inconsistent, anyone with half a brain can see it
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho lemme just say 2 more things 1 ur not a diver it's pretty obvious and not cause of pressure 2 I didn't know that having more than 1 fact was "flawed" if so you need to check a lot of ur statements
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck By my surprise, you talk about water pressure and assume me dont knwo about it.. Dude, i'm a diver and spearfisherman, i think i know about the water pressure well enough..

Flaws or not will depend on each individual.. Ok. bye now..
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho I'm assuming you didn't grow up near water I did and I'll tell you a story me and my friends were swimming when we were about 12 I'd say and we were going to the bottom at about 10 feet down grabbing rocks and skipping them my friend Fletcher went down to get a rock and opened one eye because our parents said not to open our eyes so he only opened one (I have no idea why) and the eye popped not like popcorn popped but he's bling in his left eye.

I don't have any "flaws" in my argument I just have experience in my water depth I know deeper water works and with your argument I'm assuming shallow does too
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
You choose deep when you think that water pressure can "kill" the fries.. Where's the sense in that? Do you even see in how few the fries that made it to juvenile?
Sorry, but i cant believe your claim for 800-1000. Since your argument from the start has too many flaws..
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho I've never done shallow I would say deep cause that's all I've done but maybe shallow works the same based on the numbers you've said 800-1000 cause that what we usually get
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck When we debate based on facts, i will comply.. But not this nonsense.. I never said there's no water pressure below 15 feet. What i said is it is barely there..

You opposed my opinion on shallow water, but then you bring out your opinion about fries dies on water pressure.. Make up your mind, deep or shallow?
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho and about the rock thing it goes to a slight decline like a pool
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho water pressure doesn't start at 15 feet it's always there it's just weak and gets stronger like if you dropped a chicken egg in the lake it would break before a ostrich egg. Betta babies are very fragile and would die from the pressure before they drown and they will only go to the deep part usually when they have developed gills but still sometimes die but most live. I'm tired of responding and both ways work equally according to the details you've given me so can we just agree like adults and move on
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck Water pressure starts to be problem when it reach 0.5 ATM, and that is 15 feet.. Who in the world would breed betta in 15 feet tank?

I tell you for sure, water pressure isn't a issue for 10 cm water.. It barely have a pressure.

If you know the anatomy of the fries when they hatch, they're not fully developed, including the gills.. So their only breathing organ is labyrinth. That's why they are hanging head up and grab the surface tension to hold on.

Rock like object will not be effective enough if it's distance is more than 2 cm from the water surface.

If you put the rock object within 2cm from the surface, why not conveniently reduce the whole tank's water level
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho some do die from pressure when really young the pressure from the deep parts beats down on them like if you go to a bottom of a lake the water pressure could kill you

And about stamina that's why we have the rock like objects and the male is always gonna lose stamina due to swimming around catching the fries and putting them back at hours old or still as eggs we just try to limit that but the water depth later on makes the fries stronger and when the male gets energy again he can swim somewhat deep and be happier with more space Bettas don't prefer that shallow water unless breeding they don't prefer it this deep but it gives them more options
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck What are you talking about is the fries well being AFTER they can swim.. But what i talked about is the male ability to have a good stamina till the fries can swim on their own.. Fries do not die from water pressure, they die from suffocation..

They breathe primarily from their labyrinth, not their gills.. That's why if the male stamina depleted and unable to bring the fries back to surface, most of the fries will die from DROWNING..

So shallow water (as high as male's body) ensure the male to have better stamina, since he don't need to travel up and down.. Simply by taking the fries to its mouth and spit them up.. No swimming needed..

Once the fries is swimming by their own, you may add water to 10-15cm.. It will be no problem, since the fries has develop whole body parts including gills
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho we put in a special rock like object with a slant for that the depth of the water allows us to let the frys swim better and stay healthier when older even tho in the wild their water isn't as deep it can make them healthier (most of the time some die from water pressure) and they act more active and curious
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck No water changes needed at all until the fries is 3-4 months old. Going up & down all day long is a very hard job to do for a male. Water level is everything in breeding betta.. If water level isn't a problem, why dont you try breed them in one meter water? I can guarantee you, the male will surrender in one day..

In their natural habitat, you can see the male always looking for the edge of the pond with less steeper contour..

Do you know why betta is so aggressive and become so fierce enhanced the name fighting fish?

It's because in natural habitat, they will fight for the best breeding location and defend it with their life to ensure their fries will have the best living chance
David Beck
David Beck - 8 years ago
+Julian tho we use the big above ground pools to get 800-1000 I guess it's either deep or shallow but we prob have to change the water less we just stir it around and change it about 3 times a year
Julian tho
Julian tho - 8 years ago
+David Beck I used to do this for living too.. I didn't say this wont work. It will, but it's not the best method and the fry mortality will high.. Only 400-500 fries tops.. But with shallow water (just as high as the male's body) you will get 800-1000 fries.

VERY interesting, to say the least.....WHEN though, do you remove Lark before she gets attacked???? HOW do you change the water daily when the babies are so teeny yet??? In a hatch, how many ( precentage) make it???? Any idea how large a hatching is, seems they would be very hard to count being so small ............
Sugared Suggies
Sugared Suggies - 8 years ago
you remove the female after the spawning is complete. immediately. you don't do water changes with betta frym they will die instantly. they are very sensitive to temperature changes. and the amount of hatchlings you get is based in how well you take care if them once they hatch. though some spawns may result in 50-300 eggs at a time. it all depends on the betta parents and how well the babies are taken care of. it takes a lot of research and practice to raise betta fry.

I got betta eggs ready to hatch in a day or two. I haven't change the water and the bottom seems to be dirty. Should I change it? If yes how to do it without disturbing the nest. And when can I take the male out of the tank?

4 days after bubble nest, I noticed fry were already free swimming.  I totally did not see them vertical "hairs" in the bubble nest.  I checked the nest at least twice a day.

Ammonia will build up from uneaten food and quickly kill fry. I do a 50% water change every other day since mine are in a 10 gal tub. The smaller the container the more frequently you need to do water changes. Also, there is a theory that some of the bigger fry will release a hormone that stunts the other fry's growth, and water changes help remove this hormone

how do you separate them after they mate?
Emily Brown
Emily Brown - 9 years ago
im experimenting. I've noticed with this particular male, he eats a large amount of the eggs if i leave him in, but if i take him out, a bunch of the eggs fall out of the nest. it seems like a lose lose. how can i fix it? ill try leaving him in until they hatch again next time
April R
April R - 9 years ago
+Emily Brown the male fans his fins over the eggs and moves them around which prevents fungus. With out some kind of movement of the eggs I predict a massive dieoff from fungus. You may want to rethink not having the dad in.
Emily Brown
Emily Brown - 9 years ago
right now im trying different methods of breeding. first, i removed the male 20 minutes after removing the female. those eggs are still hanging out in their nest. next, with the same male, i am going to leave him in for three days to see how that goes. i think the first method will work better. it allows the male to put the eggs in and add extra bubbles, but theres not much he can do after that other than eat them.

how old are they when you introduce brine shrimp..? live food.. I can't remember been a few years since I bred Betta, getting back into it in a few weeks, just waiting for my Thailand imports.
April R
April R - 9 years ago
+April R update, at almost 8 weeks old I am feeding twice a day. Brine shrimp in the morning then vinegar eels or microworms in the afternoon/evening.
April R
April R - 9 years ago
I started at 2 weeks. Fed vinegar eels and microworms before that and added brine shrimp at 2 weeks old. I only feed once a day and change water daily. So at 4 weeks old they get brine shrimp 4 days a week and vinegar eels with microworms 3 times a week.

April R
April R - 9 years ago
I don't really agree with that. I keep mine together for up to three days before they spawn. I give the female a betta cave and plants to hide in so she can get away if she needs, because if you keep pulling her and putting her in a bowl or jar you are just going to stress them out and ruin the chance they will mate
Emily Brown
Emily Brown - 9 years ago
they play tag for a bit, but if theyre continueing that behavior for longer than 20 minutes, remove the female and keep her in a bowl inside the tank so he can still see her, check the temp, feed the mates, etc. the next day you can try again.
April R
April R - 9 years ago
You can't avoid it. It's part of the betta mating behavior

Grace
Grace - 7 years ago
runey5: Bettas can get bored. So they like your attention, as long as it does not stress them out. I acknowledge my betta and say hi to him throughout the day. I'll put my face close to the tank when he is looking out at me. Or I'll just wiggle my finger or fingers so he can see me. I change the types of safe things I put in his tank so he does not get bored. Bettas love to explore new things and caves.

no you don't need an air pump but i have noticed a slight scum on the surface of the water and the babies struggle to breath and an airpump that is barely bubbling is enough to break the water tension but wait till they are a week old before you add it
