Betta Fish Planted Community Tank Care

Betta fish planted community tank routine maintenance. The tank is a 20 gallon long with 6 female bettas, 2 twin bar platys, 3 Julii Corys and several types of nerite snails. We do weekly water changes of 25-30% and trim the plants once a month. The plants in this aquarium are Amazon sword, Bacopa and Anubias. We vacuum the sand with a mini python siphon to be sure no gas pockets can build up. How are your female Bettas living together, shouldn't they kill each other and can I put male Bettas together or they are too aggressive?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
You can't put males together they will kill each other. Females can sometimes go together in the right conditions. A large enough tank, minimum group of 5 in a heavily planted tank. There are never any guarantees it will work though and you need to be able to house separately if it fails.

+Sagara Extra well good job but still, it's not fair to them cause it's likely one will end up dead. If you want two males then have two tanks. But that's cool it worked out for you
Sagara Extra
Sagara Extra - 7 years ago
kat tekla ether that which what they do in the wild 2 male fights until one runs away, or flare him with a mirror until he gets board of it. that's how I kept my males together they need to establish who's the Alpha

kat tekla - 7 years ago
Sagara Extra male bettas are not a good idea. if they worked for you and didnt kill eachother you are very lucky. but it shouldnt be done. female bettas (sorority tanks is what they call it ) are safer but males together is very dangerous

will the amazon sword and anubias grow without the fluval stratum in just gravel? Also is it possible to blanche the leave cuttings and feed them to mystery snails?
Lifewithpets

Yes, they will grow in just gravel but you will need to use root tabs to feed the plants. It's not likely your snails will eat the plant leaves.

I only have 2 female and 1 male betta, but they don't get along so I have to separate them. How do you get them to be in 1 tank?
Shokara2
Shokara2 - 7 years ago
Keana Lei it IS possible to get males and females to live togeather but they will tear fins. My ex fiances mom thought it was cruel thay we had male bettas sitting on top of our very heavily planted 100 gal tank..... so while we were gone... she put all 8 of the males in..... there were about a dozen females in it already. by the time we got home.... the males had torn each other up a bit but had established little territories. they lived that way for almost a a year til we had to move.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Ideally male and female shouldn't live in the same tank they will usually kill each other. For females to live together you need 5 or more and a very heavily planted tank. The tank should be minimum 10 gallons but 20 gallon is preferable.

Besides plant dipping, I think I'm still in the apprehensive stage you were once in :) I'll grow out of it...lol.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I've used bleach several times to clean tanks and decorations with no issues. Ive just recently done a new plant video so I took the plunge and bleach dipped the plants. I've not done that before and was a little apprehensive. I did it several weeks ago and the video will go up tomorrow with the process and the results. Thanks for subscribing, Ive subbed to you too.

Glad you found the channel! Don't let that build stop you from the bleach! I do bleach dip plants, absolutely. Great for killing off hitchhiker snails, etc..I had this bad experience using bleach to clean in the past and didn't get it all out, so I've been scared to use it to clean tanks - but I absolutely use diluted bleach dips for plants. Looking forward to watching for video - I subscribed so I'll get more of your great, regal stuff :)

Beautiful tank enjoy your videos new to all !setting up 54 gal will be adding lots of plants first.want to do black sand ,would it be better to put down organic miracle dirt first then sand.? or just add root tabs to sand?just want to do it right as I'd luv a female betta tank.how many bettas and what other types of fish can be added.thinking of corys maybe 1 gourami

Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
We're thinking of doing a 55 gallon and adding dirt then gravel. Having said that we've not done it yet so I can't speak from experience. If you just did sand in that size of a tank you'd need a lot of root tabs especially if it's going to be a betta tank because you'd need loads of plants. You need at least 5 bettas but in that sized tank 6-8 would be good. For it to work you will need a very heavily planted tank. A group of Cory's would be good but I wouldn't add gourami. They typically don't do well with bettas.

I love this tank--how long has it been set up? I am interested in setting up a betta sorority tank in a 20 long, but I've been reading that people have problems with the females becoming egg-bound. Has that happened to any of your bettas?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
It's been set up for about 8 months. We've had no issues with egg bound females. The problem is more likely if the females can see a male. Also giving them a healthy balanced diet keeps them healthy too.

TheReaperMC Yeah, I've heard that labyrinth fish don't do well with each other
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
If it's 48 liters then that's only 12.5 gallons. You would not be able to put many fish in that with a betta. I'd only do the Betta and 3-4 other fish. Bettas don't like to be crowded and will get very territorial over their space.
Yen Xion

Lifewithpets

Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I can't really advise on what to put in a tank. Everyone's preferences are different. However if this was my set up I would add 6 panda Cory's because they prefer to be in groups of 5 or more and I'd add less platys, maybe 6-8.

Thank you. Unfortunately this can happen with females. When we lost one a while back and went down to 4 things started to get a little unsettled but once I added in two more, things are all good again.

Thank you, we only use Flourish root tabs and have now added Fluval stratum into the gravel for substrate. There is a video on the channel on how we set this up and what we used if you want even more information. Thanks for watching!

I love this tank! I am so impressed how you care for your bettas. Your tanks are always so well kept up with and clean. Beautiful! One thing I love about bettas is how curious they are. Always wondering what you are up to! lol :)

has anyone used EcoBio-Block in a freshwater aquarium? if so what are your thoughts on it?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
I've not used them, unless well hidden or covered I think in a betta tank they're likely to damage the fins. They're a rough stone and a betta resting on them would easily tear their fins. Hopefully someone can answer who has used them.

Can you use live plant with gravel or do you need sand
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 7 years ago
Yes, you can use live plants in any substrate as long as you have something to fertilize them. I use Flourish root tabs.
