The minimum is 2.5 gallons. Yes you said it is 1.7 gallons but with all the crap you have in there it is more like half a gallon. Your betta has fin rot and is nipping at his fins as you can see. No heater is made for tanks that small. You don't need to have a fish if you can't take care of it properly

It looks like he might have fin rot. Put freshwater aquarium salt in his tank. I use it for my Bala shark and 2 Pictus catfish. They don't have any health issues, it's just good to use for freshwater fish in general. My fish have been living for 3 years with no illnesses. Anyways just giving ya some tips. You have a cute setup and he's a pretty fish! :)

Kirsten Nash
Kirsten Nash - 8 years ago
Queencool45 AJ I know that it can work to treat fin rot, but betta fish are more sensitive to it than other fish and I've had better results treating fin rot with lots and lots of water changes than with the salt.
Queencool45 AJ
Queencool45 AJ - 8 years ago
Actually Kirsten aquarium salt is a natural remedy for fin rot. It only gets deadly is you use just a little too much. Salt kills the disease bacteria and will leave the tail to do the healing. Medication for fin rot is chemically dangerous because you can overdose the fish and it makes the water dirty.
Kirsten Nash
Kirsten Nash - 8 years ago
Aquarium salt is really bad for betta. They're really sensitive to it and it can actually make it worse.
J Klimek

Ok so I saw a lot of people talking about the tank size, which is to be expected. the truth about the size is really it should be 2.5 gallons or more. As for the food be consistent with it, most recommend morning 3 pellets and night 3. It may seem like a little amount but there stummach is really really small
Owen's Aquariums
Owen's Aquariums - 8 years ago
That's too small. Don't feed your fish just because "he looks hungry enough".
jjsinner

Actually the bigger the better for any species of fish for their comfort, however the tank will just look empty and boring for the owner. So i suppose you have to compromise

We've been taught they live in little pools in the wild, and this is wrong.
Queencool45 AJ
Queencool45 AJ - 8 years ago
They are. But do TONS of research because they need tons of care. To help you as a start get a tank bigger then a 2.5 to give it some room. Get real plants or get fake plants that are not plastic so it won't rip their fins. They can't live with other fish or another Betta because they will kill eachother. They CAN live with some species of different fish but that's for a advanced owner (I have mine in a community tank) :) do research and heed the facts and necessities to keep your Betta fish happy to live longer

Goldfish organs never stop growing but their body and growth gets stunted causing them to slowly die so yet the goldfish seem happy they may only live for 6-8 years of that and their usually life span is 30 years in proper conditions :)

Is it really necessary to have a heater? I've read that it can actually be bad for them....I wasn't sure. I just got mine and was under the misconception that they are supposed to be in a small tank (the 1/2 gallon at the store said "ideal for bettas") so that's what I got and I have it divided with my two bettas right now. Don't worry, it's just for a few days. I bought a 10 gallon tank, which I'm gonna divide in half, and separate them. So, it'll be like 5 gallons for each of them. I also bought a couple of silicone plants. I eventually wanna get something better for them to hide in....but everything is adding up and costing a lot! I didn't realize betta fish were so delicate and I've had to pay extra to get betta safe stuff. Even some of the silk plants cut the fins of bettas (I read the reviews before buying anything). Anyways, just trying to do everything right. I want my fish to live a long time!

I have a good idea. To give him a bigger tank do a cheap large tank. Get a plastic clear container (those tub thingies) and use it as a tank. Then at a Dollar Store but a lei and get straws to to make your own silk plants. You can make your own filter using a water bottle, air pump, gravel, and a brand new unused plastic wool sponge. Create it (find a how to video) and then make silk plants using the flowers of the lei and straws. Then buy a heater for the dollar store tank. It can cost less then $20 and it is way better then getting a tiny tank for the same price. This cheap tank idea is from a video I watched :)

Ikeep my Betta in a 16litre tank with a little neon tetra who has no tail. I took him from my main tank when he had a white spot at his tail> I know it was not Ich and thought it was neon tetra disease( a parasite that seems to only affect tetras -mainly neons) I kept him in a little container with a dose of methylene blue every couple of days when I changed the water. I didn't hold out much hope for the little guy and actually thought about putting him to sleep, but I am so glad I didn't because as time went on the little guy kept going and going. he wouldn't eat for over a week unless he nibbled when I didn't see, but after 6 weeks he was still going so I put him with some other neons and a couple of zebra danio's but they kept chasing him ,so I put him in a bag and floated him in the betta tank. Once I was sure he would not nip at the neon I let him loose. He can't swim the best but he manages to get around and has been in the betta tank for a couple of months now with no drama. I learned a great lesson all over again and that is when keeping fish -Be Patient. things don't always just happen overnight in the fiahworld.
kiina91
kiina91 - 8 years ago
Okay how do i say it.
10 or 20g are waaaay too small for any goldfish.
The absolute minimum size for a betta tank, including Baby bettas, is 2,5g, a 5g tank would be better.
your filter is too strong for the fish, you should baffle it.
and last but not least: your betta is either biting his fins or having Fin rot. You should add indian almond leaves to prevent any further infection and do water changes of about 80% atleast every 3 days for the same reason and to prevent too much ammonia and nitrite building up in that small plastic box.
Good luck with him :)

The filter on the video is similar to mine, and with it on, my betta would often have to chase the flakes down to the bottom. Turning the filter off, allows him to feed at the surface better and reducesl wasted food at the bottom.

Try looking for fish bowl heaters at your pet store. They dont realy take up that much space as thickness, but they're wide. Usually they heat up to 5 gallons which would be fine for your tank.

The Betta seems fine in it (filter current too high though). Some Bettas do feel nice in a 2.5 gallon tank but most of then like their space. Mine lives in a 10 Gallon tank with 4 Neon Tetras and he is playful. He going in circles around his Betta hammock and plays "hide and seek" with me in his plants. Just because one Betta doesn't like a lot of space means that all of them are like that :) personalities are in them and they very in all of them.
Macho Nacho
Macho Nacho - 8 years ago
A Bettas minimum is 2.5 gallons and just because they can live in small cups doesn't mean they should. When you see the fish in the cups they look sickly and dead, there's a reason they shouldn't be kept in small spaces. Less that 2.5 tanks could lead to fin biting, a result of stress. Please take care of your fish. Just because it looks like there's enough space, doesn't mean there is. Also, weekly water changes.

I'd say nothing smaller than a 10 gallon for any fish species. The volume of water is just so small, the chemistry and water temperature fluctuate like crazy. Maybe you should invest in a heater that you can adjust the temperature with. Probably don't make it for that tiny ass cup you keep the fish in.

I had the same issue with small heaters. I would have to unplug them if the water got too warm, but I finally found a small heater that comes on and goes off automatically, keeping the temperature at a constant 76 degrees. I found this 10 watt heater at petsmart.com. It is by Grreat Choice and it says it is for 1 gallon aquariums, but it works fine for my 1.5 gallon betta bowl. It also comes in blue or purple instead of black which is nice.

hello,   you didn't mention  how often you do  partial water changes   which are important  to be done frequently on a small tank.  might be why is fins are tattered.  even with the filter  I would do at least a30% water change every  4 to 5 days. learned from experience   I have  9 tanks.   a bit much   to clean all the time   but  I do.

I love your tank setup, as it definitely is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. However, it appears your betta's fins are tattered. You may want to check for signs of fin rot (the edges are black and receeding, holes in the fins, etc.). If he doesn't have fin rot, I suggest taking some of the clutter out of yoir tank to provide him with more room to swim, as they do enjoy swimming in wider areas. Wal-Mart carries nice 5 gallong tanks (suggested minimum for bettas) for $30.

2.5 gallons is the minimum tank size  to keep a betta happy
Pristene water conditions , 76 to 82 degree F temperature and a gentle flowing but effective filter . No tankmates in a tank that size!
But lots of human attention
The betta will quickly learn to trust it's caretaker and provide hours of enjoyment for both pet and fishkeeper

To be honest, I'd rather like to see betta fish in at least a 5 gallon. But you are correct for goldfish their stocking rate is 10 gallons per fancy goldfish and an extra 10 gallons to account for the space of decorations, bacteria to form, gravel and fish waste. Comet Goldfish shouldn't be put in tanks. I speak from experience, I learned the hard way. =)

Cookie Dodger
Cookie Dodger - 9 years ago
+Lily Prescott It may seem like that now, but your goldfish will be stunned. They need atleast 10 gallons per fish with 10 gallons extra for tank decorations and stuff. They will outgrow your tank very quickly and considering they like to be with other fish...

If your goldfish is a fancy goldfish anyway. If he is a comet goldfish, I suggest you put him in a pond (if you have one) or return him or upgrade to a HUGE fish tank.

You are feeding him way too much!!!!!
Cookie Dodger
Cookie Dodger - 9 years ago
+Katie Films Stuff Bettas will eat anything. They are terrotorial which is partly why i dislike the saying "I feed him when he looks hungry".
Cookie Dodger
Cookie Dodger - 9 years ago
+Katie Films Stuff To be honest not really. Betta fish in the wild are used to catching small stuff around twice a day. Betta fish are quite small fish and around 2 - 3 pellets a day is better. I would also reccomend feeding him atleast 2 or 3 different types of food. Maybe Pellets every other day and Flakes the rest, they are fine with eating tropical fish food flakes. Overfeeding can result to bloat or swim bladder disease. Theres really no point feeding him at night. Every friday I would feed him live food or tetra dried bloodworms just to mimic natural habitat.

One other thing is you might want to fast him a bit for a day just for his intestinal track to become "clean". Same with most tropical fish, just not reccomended for coldwater goldfish and it passes right through them.
I would also give them atleast a five gallon.

Also, I agree that you need a filter but that doesn't always make up for water changes. In any type of betta habitat I would reccomend 25% water change every week or 50% two weeks. Just try not more than 50% as that could get rid of nitrosomonas and nitrobacter which are very useful.

But your betta is beautiful! Topaz is seriously cool! Hope he lives well! =)
