Betta fish breeding and fry raising

A small look into the reproductive habits of Siamese Fighting Fish (Betta splendens) and how to raise their offspring (called fry). If you're going into the hobby of breeding fish, bettas are an easy and entertaining choice for first timers. Just make sure to have plenty of dividers or alternate tanks. The song used is "Ashitaka to San Jazz Ver. (Mononoke Hime)" = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIAIiryWBvM The video quality is pretty low because it was recorded with a regular camera, I didn't have a higher quality video camera at the time.

James David Ho
James David Ho - 7 years ago
Erik Indalecio don't put the female directly into the male's tank.. Put the female in the bottle n put the bottle inside the male's tank.. After the male make a lot of bubbles, at least 24 hours, you may let the female joining the male, so he won't hit the female

After introducing them together by how many days should I let them stay in one tank?(after when the female has eggs?)
Funny Cece
Funny Cece - 6 years ago
You should keep the female in a breeding container for 2-3 days before putting them together and the breeding process will only take hours not days

We have no female but our male built a nest any way he is in a 0.7 gallon tank can we breed bettas in a 0.7 gallon tank or can we transport the nest some how please reply with any suggestions
A. Cama
A. Cama - 7 years ago
Please get a minimum 2.5 gallon tank for him. It is cruel to keep them in anything less and though he will survive, he will not live his full life span.
InitialVox
InitialVox - 7 years ago
It is possible to breed them in such a small tank, however when they aren't mating I suggest keeping them in separate tanks as that one would be kinda crowded for 2 adult sized fish. You can transport the empty unused bubble nest if you want to move him to a different tank, and even if you don't or some is lost he'll happily make more.

Ok question after the fry have hatched would it be a good idea to take both the parents out and put them into another tank while the fry grow to avoid them getting eaten?

Absolutely, infact removing the egg filled bubble nest after they're all done mating will prevent him from eating the eggs early

I want to Breed to but i don't know what to do with the Fry. i googled en i Know that the female drop around 100 babies. what do i do with the Fry i can't buy 100 filters and heaters
InitialVox

Not all of those eggs will grow into fry, many will simply not be fertilized or will be eaten by the parents during breeding. Out of the ones that live you can keep a few for selective breeding for certain traits, or give them all away.
While raising them you can keep them all together in a decently sized tank until they're about 2-3 months, then you can separate them by sex if you want, though not everyone does. When the fry are raised together they are more likely to get along with each other and other fish than if they are raised alone, so keeping them in one big tank or three can work well with proper cleaning and filters.
It's pretty easy to find new homes for bettas both by flyers/online ads, and sometimes local petstores will accept healthy fish for adoption.

I bought a pregnant betta and do I have to put it with my male? I am totally not sure
InitialVox
InitialVox - 7 years ago
Females do not get pregnant, rather they are full of unfertilized eggs, ready to drop for the male to handle.
I would suggest quarantining the fish for 2-4 weeks to give them time to display any illnesses that they may have come with before exposing them to any other fish you have.
After that you can separate the female and male by a some separation setup (netted box, plastic dividers) within his tank that allows them to see each other but not actually be together to encourage him to make his bubble nest and get her interested in mating without any unnecessary harm.
When you put her in with him depends on the nest progress and her displaying for him.
Make sure to gently take her out once they're done dropping eggs so there's no unneeded bites

At the beginning the male will be aggressive to the female when she gets close to the nest but give it a day or hours and they will eventually accept each other and the whole hugging process begins

InitialVox
InitialVox - 7 years ago
In some cases where the pair isn't actively embracing, there may be some condition distracting them, or they could still be getting ready. If the females egg supply isn't ready, or the pair don't feel comfortable in their tank they won't start until that changes.
Check the waters parameters, have the water be about 80°F/26.5°C, and be wary of distractions like other fish and bright lights near the tank that could make them feel threatened (though this isn't always the case, mine didn't care). If they appear healthy, the nest is big, and she's full of eggs but they aren't starting any action, try separating the female out for a day then putting them back together the next. Good luck!

I love how you comment to each comment with care and information, I have no fish sadly but I do have a hamster. I don't understand why people don't want to buy a female because she could possibly be 'ugly', I'm not saying they are or anything but I don't understand. Also, why do people want to breed them so much, are they going extinct or do they just want little fish babies?

Best regards, Kenzie :)

umm.. because they have a passion for this breed of fish and it's a hobby!
InitialVox

Hamsters are so cute and fluffy, very nice!
Females aren't as good for showing off in a single fish container sadly, and many
people think that male and females are equally aggressive and have to be kept
alone, so since they have to get just one, they pick the flashier one. Really
the females can be good community tank members if there's plenty of cover and
they're introduced right. In my opinion more females should be kept as desk
pets because they're just as curious and sweet as the males, and some are as
shiny and colorful too.
Bettas breed easily and often, so they're the perfect choice for anyone from
the beginner aquarist to a hardcore hobbyist. Many people try to create custom
color patterns/tail shapes too, though often it's just to see the circle of
life in miniature or to get extra fish for cheap (which is why guppies are
fantastic for long term aquariums on a budget).

The holes in the net are small enough where the eggs don't fall through but plenty of water flow still happens. The kind shown is the Penn Plax net breeder, although I did some modifications to it to sit right in the tank.

They were raised in a Tetra 1.5 gallon aquarium cube kit separate from the adult fish. After the adults mate and produce the eggs, move the eggs into the separate tank. As the fry grow you can keep them together (in a larger tank of course following the gallon=inch of fish rule) or separate them at about 2-3 months if some become too aggressive.
I kept them together as they grew older and they didn't display aggression towards each other due to being raised together, but that isn't always the case. If they're being too aggressive during this age they can be separated by netted tank segments/jarring. Eventually they were given away to other aquarium owners in the area and are doing well.

Can you breed two different kinds or they have to be the same kind ?
InitialVox
InitialVox - 7 years ago
You can safely breed different styles of common bettas together as long as both parents are free of noticeable defects, are in good health, and are of the same species (though that term is loose and there's alot of debate on betta species)
Essentially any bettas you get from the pet store are going to be able to breed, because local stores are unlikely to hold the more exotic but less heard of relatives that might not be breedable with the common Siamese fighting fish.

However most females are somewhat slimmer, so be aware of any sudden size changes. She fattened with eggs slowly and behaved in a healthy active manner throughout. If the size growth is fast or the female changes behavior for the worse, it could be a sign of something bad.

She had quite a few eggs in her at the time, that was shortly after starting the mating sessions so she hadn't released many yet. Not to worry, she was fine afterwards

I don't believe she had dropsy, maybe she just had a lot of eggs in her at the time. They mated for several days (with breaks) and afterwards her stomach shrunk considerably.
