Breeding Our Betta Fish (Episode 1)

How to breed betta fish and set up their breeding tank. Today we start the process of breeding our betta fish. The breeding tank is a 10 gallon filled up half way. We have our heater set at 82f and a sponge filter running on very low. The parents are a Galaxy Koi black, red and blue male and a Yellow and black marble female both are Plakat bettas. They are first time parents and at this point are doing really well. We conditioned the female before adding her into the tank. She was fed several times a day with high protein foods to help her produce eggs. That's so funny you thought he was eating up the eggs. But these two are really nice together. I have never seen 2 bettas so into each other with absolutely no aggression to start. The thing is that after he has the eggs. He also has to protect them from her. She will eat them. After they are done together she must be removed. But wow! You have done a great job and I'll bet you end up with a hundred babies or more! And one more thing, your tank set up is absolutely beautiful and perfect for bettas.

try bare bottom next time, start off with only 1/4 tank filled with water, it makes it easier for him and the new borns. add an inch of water once a week u will see them grow faster and healthier. I've breaded bettas in my past and started in a 40gal. U don't have to take my word for it but u should try it. No plants makes it safer and easier for the male.

Help my betta fish is sick, he was his perfectly fine active self & when I got home at night he was just laying at the bottom of the tank & I just thought he was sleeping but he's been like that all day yesterday aswell as today and he's not eating. I have him in a 6.5g cycled tank. He has a heater & a filter & his water stays at about 79°F & I do weekly water changes. All my water parameters are fine I constantly check with the master test kit, I only have real plants & nothing sharp in his tank that could cut him but I don't know what's going on with him. I love him so much I don't want him to die please Anyone that can help me figure out what's going on it would be really appreciated

Hello, Lifewithpets. I have a question concerning a female elephant ear betta. I just set her up in a 5 gallon tank alone. I don't have a male at the moment. She is setup with a heater and a sponge filter. I noticed she was hanging around her heater this morning. I just checked up on her, she's laid eggs! Tons of them! She goes behind her heater and looks downward to release the eggs she then swims down picks them up and has formed a nice collection of them along the top left side of her tank. She is caring for them just like a male.
My question is what should I do for her? Should I take the eggs out since I don't have a male to fertilize them? Should I let her keep them? I was going to do a water change today but now I'm afraid to disturb her.
Thank you in advance!

Hi, I am a fish owner.. a beginner i should say haha. Anyways I enjoy animals and fish especially and its sort of my hobby. Right now I have 2 tanks a 5 gal and 10 gal the ten gal has 2 female guppies and 2 baby guppies with one fake plant, a heater (brand new) and filter (brand new), in the 5 gal I have 2 male guppies and one fake plant and a filter (brand new as well) I am looking to get rid of some of my guppies not sure where to yet probably the pet store and giving my tank a new look maybe put in sand instead of the gravel I have if that is good for bettas and get some bettas to breed. Can I do this?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Breeding is a lot of work and expensive. Betta fish are hard to breed and also a lot of work to care for as they grow up. Thry need a 10 gallon breeding tank and then a minimum 20 gallon grow out tank. They need live foods for the fry and lots of daily large water changes. Once they get a few months old the males need to be separated into jars or containers until they can be sold as they can’t continue living with the others as they get so aggressive. We potentially are going to have 15-20 jars with males that have to be cleaned every day plus the main tank still needs to be done everyday. Ours was a small spawn, we could have ended up with 100’s of fry! You then have to have buyers for all the fish. If you’re a beginner fish keeper I would wait a while and gain more experience keeping fish and keeping a tank cycled with no ammonia spikes. During that time start collecting all the supplies needed to breed fish.

Wow, beautiful pair and wonderful spawning. How did you condition them so the male didn't chase and bite the female?
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
A lot depends on the pair and the aggression. To condition them we fed high protein for two weeks. For one of those weeks the male could see the female for several hours a day. They were in separate tanks. When I added her to the tank she was in it for approximately 24-36 hours before I released her.

You don't really need to worry about that in the tank. As long as there is a small amount of water surface movement then it's ok.

You are doing amazing with this! Youve had amazing success from this pair. Are they hanging from the bubblenest yet? It's very fortunate for you to have a great pair that have amazing coulors and get along very well. They were the least bit aggesive! Is Bandit formerly Kasia's fish? If it is, it will be fun to watch one generation after another. I cannot wait for you to raise these betta fry. This is a very good setup in a 10 gallon, you really know what youre doing for a beginner, it's my first time breeding too. Good luck with this! Im looking forward to seeing the fry in the future.

I have a 5.5 gallon tank that has been cycling for 6-7 weeks now. i thought that it was cycled, as every time i dosed the ammonia up to 4ppm it would convert into 0 ammonia 0 nitrites and 5 nitrates within 12 - 24 hours. I got a betta today and before adding him i tested the water. I had 0.25 nitrites ? So i did a 50% water change and siphoned the substrate. I then tested again and my nitrates were at 5 !!? and my nitrates were at 20 ? when theyre usually at 5ppm. I noticed that the decor was covered in clear, thick mucus looking slime and i took all the decor out and washed in hot water before adding them again. I also ended up emptying my tank and washing all the gravel before refilling it. I tested it and everything was at 0, apart from nitrates which were around 20 ppm. i added a few drops of ammonia so my bacteria wouldn't starve and tested again after a few hours. 0 ammonia, 0.25 nitrite and 20 nitrates. what has happened ? I've put my betta into a 4 litre bowl for the meantime just until i can get him in his tank. Does anyone have any idea what is going on with my tank and how to fix it ? I really don't want to kill my fish.. :(
Larry's In My Closet
Larry's In My Closet - 6 years ago
Lifewithpets I just tested my water again and I have 0 ammonia and 0.25 nitrites. As for my fish, what can I do to make him happy while I wait for his tank to be alright ? He's currently in a small bowl that I had laying around and he seems to be doing fine but I'm scared to make him sick
Larry's In My Closet
Larry's In My Closet - 6 years ago
Lifewithpets Thanks for replying. I have tested my tap water and it has 0 ammonia, 0 nitrites and 0 nitrates. It seemed to be fully cycled as it would convert 4ppm of ammonia into nitrates overnight and it was at 0 ammonia and 0 nitrite for a week before I got my fish. I thought it was weird since as soon as I did a water change and disturbed the slime stuff and the gravel, my nitrites went up to 5ppm? I bought some prime yesterday, will that help ? I don't think I will be able to get to the pet shop any time this week..
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
It sounds like your tank hasn’t fully cycled yet. Have you tested your tap water for nitrite? Also the white slime is new tank syndrome and completely harmless and is likely to return. If it does you can try siphoning it off or just leave it. Don’t take everything out including gravel and clean it. Whilst most beneficial bacteria does live in the filter some does live on surfaces and in the gravel and by cleaning it you will ruin your cycle. I would try getting something like seachem stability or quick start to help move the tank along.
Germs many
Germs many - 6 years ago
I just got a koi betta might be a giant but it has short fins that make him(i think it's a him) look ugly. But it keeps trying to jump and is not eating. I understand that betta jumps and don't eat at first but i just tested my water and ammonia levels is 0ppm compared to my tap water which is 0.25 but my nitrite is 5ppm. Even after 40% water change it becomes 4ppm. At the next day it becomes 5 again. I feed it only once per day and overfeed it as i have ghost shrimp that steals all the food from the dwarf corydoras. I plan to breed my betta which i call proteus as it is my first betta. Cost me 16 dollars. So i don't want it dying on me. In my 17 gallon with 4 platys,1 guppy,3 corydoras after the rest died,1 cardinal after the rest died,4 red ramshorn snail and alot of shrimp. Way too much shrimp. Tank is planted and the platys are mating. Anyways to lower nitrite levels? other than wait or should i move it to my smaller 2.5 gallon tank temporarily?
Big City Bettas
Big City Bettas - 6 years ago
I would advise caution with breeding that fish. What you've described sounds like a very unbalanced fish which would produce unbalanced offspring and one should always breed as responsibly as possible which means not breeding fish that have health problems or badly balanced finnage or poor confirmation. These things can affect a fishes quality of life greatly.
Lifewithpets
Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Your tank is not cycled so the Betta is jumping to try and get out of the toxic water. I’d suggest if you have another tank take him and out him in there and do daily 100% water changes. As for your other tank you need to keep doing water changes and add something like quick start or stability to help the cycle. You have a lot of fish in there so it may take a while for it to stabilize.

I think introducing the pair of bettas over several days by having the female in a breeder box is a very good idea: it really helps cut down on aggression by giving them time to get used to each other, rather than just throwing them together.

Something I wanted to add was when you are conditioning bettas for breeding you should let them see each other in separate tanks to get used to each other. Like two tanks next ti each other uncarded. And it would allow them to get into the mood even more before doing the breeder box step.

You have such beautiful betta fish, you inspired me to get my own betta tank and i have actually just gotten a betta in my newly cyckled tank today, hes young but a really nice violet blue color, I also got two ballon mollys and a sword tail and they're all doing great. Does anyone know if swordtails need to be more than one? i did ask at the store but they said it didn't interferred with its well being. Also the mollys (a male and female) was in a large group at the store, the male seems to be annoyed whenever the female comes close and sometimes chase it away, (not harmfully really) but should i get another another female for the other? and why is he doing this? any answer appreciated :)

Hi Sheila, great video. It is so beautiful to watch them embrace, especially for such normally aggressive fish.
I'm only used to the rather rambunctious, bordering on violent way my goldfish spawn, which also surprised me for such normally peaceful fish, lol.
A quick question, do you offer food to the male whilst he tends the nest?
Lifewithpets

Thank you. I didn't feed him while he was tending the nest. It's important to feed them well before breeding because he goes several days without feeding afterwards.

I can definitely see the eggs! Excited for you! I myself am trying to be a first time betta breeder as well :3 can't wait to see your progress! I've spawned my 2 betta's twice already but wasn't a success. Both times the male ate his eggs. The second time I knew there was some babies cause I could see their little eye balls. Take a small nap. Wake back up to find he ate them all again! I didn't know about keeping the light on trick though, thank you for that little info there :) I'm hoping to start up a YouTube channel myself for my fish hobby and the fish hobby community! Hopefully I'll be able to get my male to be a good daddy at some point or maybe I should just think about taking him out. I don't want to do that though. Thank you for sharing by the way :) looking forward to your progress <3

Lifewithpets - 6 years ago
Thank you! Egg is eating can be quite common in first time parents. You can take the male out once they're free swimming or you could lower the water level really low and take him out and hope they can make it back to the surface if they fall. I am hoping to be doing a breeding bettas livestream very soon with Amber from big city bettas. .Hopefully we can answer some of the issues people are having.
Shirene Dustin Miller
Shirene Dustin Miller - 6 years ago
Jessie Kinney both times when this happened it was within 24 hours of spawning. Idk if they were free swimmers at that point but maybe. I've read that the male will eat some eggs that were not fertile to prevent funking up the good ones in the nest and that's what I guessed what happened to the first spawning + to be honest I didn't take it to seriously the first time. Mainly wanted to see if they liked each other and could do a spawn which they did. The second spawn surprised me cause I woke up early to check on the nest and saw little eyes in a few of the eggs and was expecting to see them be hatched facing vertically up in the nest maybe but instead there was no eggs to be had. That was disappointing to see. But they are first time parents I'm guessing learning as they go as am I. I know I do need to remove the male eventually to prevent nibbling. I'm just lost with when to at this point with this specific pair I have. Cause I would like him to learn to tend to his nest till they are free swimmers. But I also would like to have some babies not eaten! Lol. Thank you for your advice! :)
Jessie Kinney
Jessie Kinney - 6 years ago
Shirene Dustin Miller once the babies are free swimming the male will eat them, provide lots of hiding places and plant cover and remove him once all the eggs are hatched and hopefully that'll save some babies!

This was so interesting; I didn't realize the nest might need something to help it. Who knew bubble wrap could help?? Excited to see babies!

Thanks! Yes the bubble wrap worked really well. The only issue was when the water evaporated it lifted up but I just kept adding a cup of water and that did the trick.
